إِذْ

When

idh

دَخَلُوا۟

they entered

dakhalū

عَلَيْهِ

upon him

ʿalayhi

فَقَالُوا۟

and said

faqālū

سَلَـٰمًۭا

Peace

salāman

قَالَ

He said

qāla

إِنَّا

Indeed, we

innā

مِنكُمْ

(are) of you

minkum

وَجِلُونَ

afraid

wajilūna

٥٢

When they entered upon him and said, "Peace." [Abraham] said, "Indeed, we are fearful [i.e., apprehensive] of you."

— Saheeh International

قَالُوا۟

They said

qālū

لَا

(Do) not

تَوْجَلْ

be afraid

tawjal

إِنَّا

indeed, we

innā

نُبَشِّرُكَ

[we] bring glad tidings to you

nubashiruka

بِغُلَـٰمٍ

of a boy

bighulāmin

عَلِيمٍۢ

learned

ʿalīmin

٥٣

[The angels] said, "Fear not. Indeed, we give you good tidings of a learned boy."

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

أَبَشَّرْتُمُونِى

Do you give me glad tidings

abashartumūnī

عَلَىٰٓ

Do you give me glad tidings

ʿalā

أَن

although

an

مَّسَّنِىَ

has overtaken me

massaniya

ٱلْكِبَرُ

old age

l-kibaru

فَبِمَ

Then about what

fabima

تُبَشِّرُونَ

you give glad tidings

tubashirūna

٥٤

He said, "Have you given me good tidings although old age has come upon me? Then of what [wonder] do you inform?"

— Saheeh International

قَالُوا۟

They said

qālū

بَشَّرْنَـٰكَ

We give you glad tidings

basharnāka

بِٱلْحَقِّ

in truth

bil-ḥaqi

فَلَا

so (do) not

falā

تَكُن

be

takun

مِّنَ

of

mina

ٱلْقَـٰنِطِينَ

the despairing

l-qāniṭīna

٥٥

They said, "We have given you good tidings in truth, so do not be of the despairing."

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

وَمَن

And who

waman

يَقْنَطُ

despairs

yaqnaṭu

مِن

of

min

رَّحْمَةِ

(the) Mercy

raḥmati

رَبِّهِۦٓ

(of) his Lord

rabbihi

إِلَّا

except

illā

ٱلضَّآلُّونَ

those who are astray

l-ḍālūna

٥٦

He said, "And who despairs of the mercy of his Lord except for those astray?"

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

فَمَا

Then what

famā

خَطْبُكُمْ

(is) your business

khaṭbukum

أَيُّهَا

O messengers

ayyuhā

ٱلْمُرْسَلُونَ

O messengers

l-mur'salūna

٥٧

[Abraham] said, "Then what is your business [here], O messengers?"

— Saheeh International

قَالُوٓا۟

They said

qālū

إِنَّآ

Indeed, we

innā

أُرْسِلْنَآ

[we] have been sent

ur'sil'nā

إِلَىٰ

to

ilā

قَوْمٍۢ

a people

qawmin

مُّجْرِمِينَ

criminals

muj'rimīna

٥٨

They said, "Indeed, we have been sent to a people of criminals,

— Saheeh International

إِلَّآ

Except

illā

ءَالَ

the family

āla

لُوطٍ

of Lut

lūṭin

إِنَّا

indeed, we

innā

لَمُنَجُّوهُمْ

surely will save them

lamunajjūhum

أَجْمَعِينَ

all

ajmaʿīna

٥٩

Except the family of Lot; indeed, we will save them all

— Saheeh International

إِلَّا

Except

illā

ٱمْرَأَتَهُۥ

his wife

im'ra-atahu

قَدَّرْنَآ ۙ

We have decreed

qaddarnā

إِنَّهَا

that she

innahā

لَمِنَ

(is) surely of

lamina

ٱلْغَـٰبِرِينَ

those who remain behind

l-ghābirīna

٦٠

Except his wife." We [i.e., Allāh] decreed that she is of those who remain behind.1

— Saheeh International

فَلَمَّا

And when

falammā

جَآءَ

came

jāa

ءَالَ

(to the) family

āla

لُوطٍ

(of) Lut

lūṭin

ٱلْمُرْسَلُونَ

the messengers

l-mur'salūna

٦١

And when the messengers came to the family of Lot,

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

إِنَّكُمْ

Indeed, you

innakum

قَوْمٌۭ

(are) a people

qawmun

مُّنكَرُونَ

unknown

munkarūna

٦٢

He said, "Indeed, you are people unknown."

— Saheeh International

قَالُوا۟

They said

qālū

بَلْ

Nay

bal

جِئْنَـٰكَ

we have come to you

ji'nāka

بِمَا

with what

bimā

كَانُوا۟

they were

kānū

فِيهِ

in it

fīhi

يَمْتَرُونَ

disputing

yamtarūna

٦٣

They said, "But we have come to you with that about which they were disputing,

— Saheeh International

وَأَتَيْنَـٰكَ

And we have come to you

wa-ataynāka

بِٱلْحَقِّ

with the truth

bil-ḥaqi

وَإِنَّا

and indeed, we

wa-innā

لَصَـٰدِقُونَ

surely (are) truthful

laṣādiqūna

٦٤

And we have come to you with truth, and indeed, we are truthful.

— Saheeh International

فَأَسْرِ

So travel

fa-asri

بِأَهْلِكَ

with your family

bi-ahlika

بِقِطْعٍۢ

in a portion

biqiṭ'ʿin

مِّنَ

of

mina

ٱلَّيْلِ

the night

al-layli

وَٱتَّبِعْ

and follow

wa-ittabiʿ

أَدْبَـٰرَهُمْ

their backs

adbārahum

وَلَا

and not

walā

يَلْتَفِتْ

let look back

yaltafit

مِنكُمْ

among you

minkum

أَحَدٌۭ

anyone

aḥadun

وَٱمْضُوا۟

and go on

wa-im'ḍū

حَيْثُ

where

ḥaythu

تُؤْمَرُونَ

you are ordered

tu'marūna

٦٥

So set out with your family during a portion of the night and follow behind them and let not anyone among you look back and continue on to where you are commanded."

— Saheeh International

وَقَضَيْنَآ

And We conveyed

waqaḍaynā

إِلَيْهِ

to him

ilayhi

ذَٰلِكَ

[that]

dhālika

ٱلْأَمْرَ

the matter

l-amra

أَنَّ

that

anna

دَابِرَ

(the) root

dābira

هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ

(of) these

hāulāi

مَقْطُوعٌۭ

would be cut off

maqṭūʿun

مُّصْبِحِينَ

(by) early morning

muṣ'biḥīna

٦٦

And We conveyed to him [the decree] of that matter: that those [sinners] would be eliminated by early morning.

— Saheeh International

وَجَآءَ

And came

wajāa

أَهْلُ

(the) people

ahlu

ٱلْمَدِينَةِ

(of) the city

l-madīnati

يَسْتَبْشِرُونَ

rejoicing

yastabshirūna

٦٧

And the people of the city came rejoicing.1

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ

these

hāulāi

ضَيْفِى

(are) my guests

ḍayfī

فَلَا

so (do) not

falā

تَفْضَحُونِ

shame me

tafḍaḥūni

٦٨

[Lot] said, "Indeed, these are my guests, so do not shame me.

— Saheeh International

وَٱتَّقُوا۟

And fear

wa-ittaqū

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

وَلَا

and (do) not

walā

تُخْزُونِ

disgrace me

tukh'zūni

٦٩

And fear Allāh and do not disgrace me."

— Saheeh International

قَالُوٓا۟

They said

qālū

أَوَلَمْ

Did not

awalam

نَنْهَكَ

we forbid you

nanhaka

عَنِ

from

ʿani

ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ

the world

l-ʿālamīna

٧٠

They said, "Have we not forbidden you from [protecting] people?"

— Saheeh International
