إِذْ When idh they entered dakhalū upon him ʿalayhi and said faqālū Peace salāman He said qāla Indeed, we innā (are) of you minkum afraid wajilūna
When they entered upon him and said, "Peace." [Abraham] said, "Indeed, we are fearful [i.e., apprehensive] of you."
قَالُوا۟ They said qālū (Do) not lā be afraid tawjal indeed, we innā [we] bring glad tidings to you nubashiruka of a boy bighulāmin learned ʿalīmin
[The angels] said, "Fear not. Indeed, we give you good tidings of a learned boy."
قَالَ He said qāla Do you give me glad tidings abashartumūnī Do you give me glad tidings ʿalā although an has overtaken me massaniya old age l-kibaru Then about what fabima you give glad tidings tubashirūna
He said, "Have you given me good tidings although old age has come upon me? Then of what [wonder] do you inform?"
قَالُوا۟ They said qālū We give you glad tidings basharnāka in truth bil-ḥaqi so (do) not falā be takun of mina the despairing l-qāniṭīna
They said, "We have given you good tidings in truth, so do not be of the despairing."
قَالَ He said qāla And who waman despairs yaqnaṭu of min (the) Mercy raḥmati (of) his Lord rabbihi except illā those who are astray l-ḍālūna
He said, "And who despairs of the mercy of his Lord except for those astray?"
قَالَ He said qāla Then what famā (is) your business khaṭbukum O messengers ayyuhā O messengers l-mur'salūna
[Abraham] said, "Then what is your business [here], O messengers?"
قَالُوٓا۟ They said qālū Indeed, we innā [we] have been sent ur'sil'nā to ilā a people qawmin criminals muj'rimīna
They said, "Indeed, we have been sent to a people of criminals,
إِلَّآ Except illā the family āla of Lut lūṭin indeed, we innā surely will save them lamunajjūhum all ajmaʿīna
Except the family of Lot; indeed, we will save them all
إِلَّا Except illā his wife im'ra-atahu We have decreed qaddarnā that she innahā (is) surely of lamina those who remain behind l-ghābirīna
Except his wife." We [i.e., Allāh] decreed that she is of those who remain behind.1
فَلَمَّا And when falammā came jāa (to the) family āla (of) Lut lūṭin the messengers l-mur'salūna
And when the messengers came to the family of Lot,
قَالَ He said qāla Indeed, you innakum (are) a people qawmun unknown munkarūna
He said, "Indeed, you are people unknown."
قَالُوا۟ They said qālū Nay bal we have come to you ji'nāka with what bimā they were kānū in it fīhi disputing yamtarūna
They said, "But we have come to you with that about which they were disputing,
وَأَتَيْنَـٰكَ And we have come to you wa-ataynāka with the truth bil-ḥaqi and indeed, we wa-innā surely (are) truthful laṣādiqūna
And we have come to you with truth, and indeed, we are truthful.
فَأَسْرِ So travel fa-asri with your family bi-ahlika in a portion biqiṭ'ʿin of mina the night al-layli and follow wa-ittabiʿ their backs adbārahum and not walā let look back yaltafit among you minkum anyone aḥadun and go on wa-im'ḍū where ḥaythu you are ordered tu'marūna
So set out with your family during a portion of the night and follow behind them and let not anyone among you look back and continue on to where you are commanded."
وَقَضَيْنَآ And We conveyed waqaḍaynā to him ilayhi [that] dhālika the matter l-amra that anna (the) root dābira (of) these hāulāi would be cut off maqṭūʿun (by) early morning muṣ'biḥīna
And We conveyed to him [the decree] of that matter: that those [sinners] would be eliminated by early morning.
وَجَآءَ And came wajāa (the) people ahlu (of) the city l-madīnati rejoicing yastabshirūna
And the people of the city came rejoicing.1
قَالَ He said qāla Indeed inna these hāulāi (are) my guests ḍayfī so (do) not falā shame me tafḍaḥūni
[Lot] said, "Indeed, these are my guests, so do not shame me.
وَٱتَّقُوا۟ And fear wa-ittaqū Allah l-laha and (do) not walā disgrace me tukh'zūni
And fear Allāh and do not disgrace me."
قَالُوٓا۟ They said qālū Did not awalam we forbid you nanhaka from ʿani the world l-ʿālamīna
They said, "Have we not forbidden you from [protecting] people?"
