قَالَ

He said

qāla

هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ

These

hāulāi

بَنَاتِىٓ

(are) my daughters

banātī

إِن

if

in

كُنتُمْ

you would be

kuntum

فَـٰعِلِينَ

doers

fāʿilīna

٧١

[Lot] said, "These are my daughters1 - if you would be doers [of lawful marriage]."

— Saheeh International

لَعَمْرُكَ

By your life

laʿamruka

إِنَّهُمْ

indeed, they

innahum

لَفِى

were in

lafī

سَكْرَتِهِمْ

their intoxication

sakratihim

يَعْمَهُونَ

wandering blindly

yaʿmahūna

٧٢

By your life, [O Muḥammad], indeed they were, in their intoxication, wandering blindly.

— Saheeh International

فَأَخَذَتْهُمُ

So, seized them

fa-akhadhathumu

ٱلصَّيْحَةُ

the awful cry

l-ṣayḥatu

مُشْرِقِينَ

at sunrise

mush'riqīna

٧٣

So the shriek1 seized them at sunrise.

— Saheeh International

فَجَعَلْنَا

And We made

fajaʿalnā

عَـٰلِيَهَا

its highest (part)

ʿāliyahā

سَافِلَهَا

its lowest

sāfilahā

وَأَمْطَرْنَا

and We rained

wa-amṭarnā

عَلَيْهِمْ

upon them

ʿalayhim

حِجَارَةًۭ

stones

ḥijāratan

مِّن

of

min

سِجِّيلٍ

baked clay

sijjīlin

٧٤

And We made the highest part [of the city] its lowest and rained upon them stones of hard clay.

— Saheeh International

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

فِى

in

ذَٰلِكَ

that

dhālika

لَـَٔايَـٰتٍۢ

(are) the Signs

laāyātin

لِّلْمُتَوَسِّمِينَ

for those who discern

lil'mutawassimīna

٧٥

Indeed in that are signs for those who discern.

— Saheeh International

وَإِنَّهَا

And indeed, it

wa-innahā

لَبِسَبِيلٍۢ

(is) on a road

labisabīlin

مُّقِيمٍ

established

muqīmin

٧٦

And indeed, they [i.e., those cities] are [situated] on an established road.

— Saheeh International

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

فِى

in

ذَٰلِكَ

that

dhālika

لَـَٔايَةًۭ

surely (is) a Sign

laāyatan

لِّلْمُؤْمِنِينَ

for the believers

lil'mu'minīna

٧٧

Indeed in that is a sign for the believers.

— Saheeh International

وَإِن

And were

wa-in

And were

أَصْحَـٰبُ

aṣḥābu

ٱلْأَيْكَةِ

(of) the wood

l-aykati

لَظَـٰلِمِينَ

surely wrongdoers

laẓālimīna

٧٨

And the companions of the thicket [i.e., the people of Madyan] were [also] wrongdoers,

— Saheeh International

فَٱنتَقَمْنَا

So We took retribution

fa-intaqamnā

مِنْهُمْ

from them

min'hum

وَإِنَّهُمَا

and indeed, they both

wa-innahumā

لَبِإِمَامٍۢ

(were) on a highway

labi-imāmin

مُّبِينٍۢ

clear

mubīnin

٧٩

So We took retribution from them, and indeed, both [cities] are on a clear highway.

— Saheeh International

وَلَقَدْ

And certainly

ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ

the Messengers

l-mur'salīna

٨٠

And certainly did the companions of al-Ḥijr1 [i.e., the Thamūd] deny the messengers.

— Saheeh International

وَءَاتَيْنَـٰهُمْ

And We gave them

waātaynāhum

ءَايَـٰتِنَا

Our Signs

āyātinā

فَكَانُوا۟

but they were

fakānū

عَنْهَا

from them

ʿanhā

مُعْرِضِينَ

turning away

muʿ'riḍīna

٨١

And We gave them Our signs, but from them they were turning away.

— Saheeh International

وَكَانُوا۟

And they used (to)

wakānū

يَنْحِتُونَ

carve

yanḥitūna

مِنَ

ٱلْجِبَالِ

the mountains

l-jibāli

بُيُوتًا

houses

buyūtan

ءَامِنِينَ

secure

āminīna

٨٢

And they used to carve from the mountains, houses, feeling secure.

— Saheeh International

فَأَخَذَتْهُمُ

But seized them

fa-akhadhathumu

ٱلصَّيْحَةُ

the awful cry

l-ṣayḥatu

مُصْبِحِينَ

(at) early morning

muṣ'biḥīna

٨٣

But the shriek seized them at early morning,

— Saheeh International

فَمَآ

And not

they used (to)

earn

yaksibūna

٨٤

So nothing availed them [from] what they used to earn.

— Saheeh International

وَمَا

And not

wamā

So overlook

fa-iṣ'faḥi

gracious

٨٥

And We have not created the heavens and earth and that between them except in truth. And indeed, the Hour is coming; so forgive with gracious forgiveness.

Indeed, your Lord - He is the Knowing Creator.
