وَمَا And not wamā you ask them tasaluhum for it ʿalayhi any min reward ajrin Not in (is) it huwa but illā a reminder dhik'run to the worlds lil'ʿālamīna
And you do not ask of them for it any payment. It is not except a reminder to the worlds.
وَكَأَيِّن And how many waka-ayyin of min a Sign āyatin in fī the heavens l-samāwāti and the earth wal-arḍi they pass yamurrūna over it ʿalayhā while they wahum (are) from them ʿanhā the ones who turn away muʿ'riḍūna
And how many a sign within the heavens and earth do they pass over while they, therefrom, are turning away.
وَمَا And not wamā believe yu'minu most of them aktharuhum in Allah bil-lahi except illā while they wahum associate partners with Him mush'rikūna
And most of them believe not in Allāh except while they associate others with Him.
أَفَأَمِنُوٓا۟ Do they then feel secure afa-aminū (against) that an comes to them tatiyahum an overwhelming ghāshiyatun [of] min punishment ʿadhābi (of) Allah l-lahi or aw comes to them tatiyahumu the Hour l-sāʿatu suddenly baghtatan while they wahum (do) not lā perceive yashʿurūna
Then do they feel secure that there will not come to them an overwhelming [aspect] of the punishment of Allāh or that the Hour will not come upon them suddenly while they do not perceive?
قُلْ Say qul This hādhihi (is) my way sabīlī I invite adʿū to ilā Allah l-lahi with ʿalā insight baṣīratin I anā and whoever wamani follows me ittabaʿanī And Glory be wasub'ḥāna (to) Allah l-lahi and not wamā I am anā of mina the polytheists l-mush'rikīna
Say, "This is my way; I invite to Allāh with insight, I and those who follow me. And exalted is Allāh; and I am not of those who associate others with Him."
وَمَآ And not wamā We sent arsalnā before you min before you qablika but illā men rijālan We revealed nūḥī to them ilayhim from (among) min (the) people ahli (of) the townships l-qurā So have not afalam they traveled yasīrū in fī the earth l-arḍi and seen fayanẓurū how kayfa was kāna (the) end ʿāqibatu (of) those who alladhīna (were) before them min (were) before them qablihim And surely the home waladāru (of) the Hereafter l-ākhirati (is) best khayrun for those who lilladhīna fear Allah ittaqaw Then will not afalā you use reason taʿqilūna
And We sent not before you [as messengers] except men to whom We revealed from among the people of cities. So have they1 not traveled through the earth and observed how was the end of those before them? And the home of the Hereafter is best for those who fear Allāh; then will you not reason?
حَتَّىٰٓ Until ḥattā when idhā gave up hope is'tayasa the Messengers l-rusulu and thought waẓannū that they annahum certainly qad were denied kudhibū then came to them jāahum Our help naṣrunā and was saved fanujjiya whom man We willed nashāu And not walā (can) be repelled yuraddu Our punishment basunā from ʿani the people l-qawmi (who are) criminals l-muj'rimīna
[They continued] until, when the messengers despaired and were certain that they had been denied, there came to them Our victory, and whoever We willed was saved. And Our punishment cannot be repelled from the people who are criminals.
لَقَدْ Verily laqad (there) is kāna in fī their stories qaṣaṣihim a lesson ʿib'ratun for men li-ulī (of) understanding l-albābi Not mā (it) is kāna a narration ḥadīthan invented yuf'tarā but walākin a confirmation taṣdīqa (of that) which alladhī (was) before it bayna (was) before it yadayhi and a detailed explanation watafṣīla (of) all kulli things shayin and a guidance wahudan and mercy waraḥmatan for a people liqawmin who believe yu'minūna
There was certainly in their stories a lesson for those of understanding. Never was it [i.e., the Qur’ān] a narration invented, but a confirmation of what was before it and a detailed explanation of all things and guidance and mercy for a people who believe.
