قَالَ

He said

qāla

مَعَاذَ

Allah forbid

maʿādha

ٱللَّهِ

Allah forbid

l-lahi

أَن

that

an

نَّأْخُذَ

we take

nakhudha

إِلَّا

except

illā

مَن

(one) who

man

وَجَدْنَا

we found

wajadnā

مَتَـٰعَنَا

our possession

matāʿanā

عِندَهُۥٓ

with him

ʿindahu

إِنَّآ

Indeed, we

innā

إِذًۭا

then

idhan

لَّظَـٰلِمُونَ

surely (would be) wrongdoers

laẓālimūna

٧٩

He said, "[I seek] the refuge of Allāh [to prevent] that we take except him with whom we found our possession. Indeed, we would then be unjust."

— Saheeh International

فَلَمَّا

So when

falammā

ٱسْتَيْـَٔسُوا۟

they despaired

is'tayasū

مِنْهُ

of him

min'hu

خَلَصُوا۟

they secluded themselves

khalaṣū

نَجِيًّۭا ۖ

(in) private consultation

najiyyan

قَالَ

Said

qāla

كَبِيرُهُمْ

the eldest among them

kabīruhum

أَلَمْ

Do not

alam

تَعْلَمُوٓا۟

you know

taʿlamū

أَنَّ

that

anna

أَبَاكُمْ

your father

abākum

قَدْ

has taken

qad

أَخَذَ

has taken

akhadha

عَلَيْكُم

upon you

ʿalaykum

مَّوْثِقًۭا

a promise

mawthiqan

مِّنَ

by

mina

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

وَمِن

and before

wamin

قَبْلُ

and before

qablu

مَا

that

فَرَّطتُمْ

you failed

farraṭtum

فِى

concerning

يُوسُفَ ۖ

Yusuf

yūsufa

فَلَنْ

So never

falan

أَبْرَحَ

will I leave

abraḥa

ٱلْأَرْضَ

the land

l-arḍa

حَتَّىٰ

until

ḥattā

يَأْذَنَ

permits

yadhana

لِىٓ

me

أَبِىٓ

my father

abī

أَوْ

or

aw

يَحْكُمَ

Allah decides

yaḥkuma

ٱللَّهُ

Allah decides

l-lahu

لِى ۖ

for me

وَهُوَ

and He

wahuwa

خَيْرُ

(is) the Best

khayru

ٱلْحَـٰكِمِينَ

(of) the judges

l-ḥākimīna

٨٠

So when they had despaired of him, they secluded themselves in private consultation. The eldest of them said, "Do you not know that your father has taken upon you an oath by Allāh and [that] before you failed in [your duty to] Joseph? So I will never leave [this] land until my father permits me or Allāh decides for me,1 and He is the best of judges.

— Saheeh International

ٱرْجِعُوٓا۟

Return

ir'jiʿū

إِلَىٰٓ

to

ilā

أَبِيكُمْ

your father

abīkum

فَقُولُوا۟

and say

faqūlū

يَـٰٓأَبَانَآ

'O our father

yāabānā

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱبْنَكَ

your son

ib'naka

سَرَقَ

has stolen

saraqa

وَمَا

and not

wamā

شَهِدْنَآ

we testify

shahid'nā

إِلَّا

except

illā

بِمَا

of what

bimā

عَلِمْنَا

we knew

ʿalim'nā

وَمَا

And not

wamā

كُنَّا

we were

kunnā

لِلْغَيْبِ

of the unseen

lil'ghaybi

حَـٰفِظِينَ

guardians

ḥāfiẓīna

٨١

Return to your father and say, 'O our father, indeed your son has stolen, and we did not testify except to what we knew. And we were not witnesses of the unseen.1

— Saheeh International

وَسْـَٔلِ

And ask

wasali

ٱلْقَرْيَةَ

the town

l-qaryata

ٱلَّتِى

where

allatī

كُنَّا

we were

kunnā

فِيهَا

[in it]

fīhā

وَٱلْعِيرَ

and the caravan

wal-ʿīra

ٱلَّتِىٓ

which

allatī

أَقْبَلْنَا

we returned

aqbalnā

فِيهَا ۖ

[in it]

fīhā

وَإِنَّا

And indeed, we

wa-innā

لَصَـٰدِقُونَ

surely (are) truthful.'

laṣādiqūna

٨٢

And ask the city in which we were and the caravan in which we came - and indeed, we are truthful.'"

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

بَلْ

Nay

bal

سَوَّلَتْ

have enticed

sawwalat

لَكُمْ

you

lakum

أَنفُسُكُمْ

your souls

anfusukum

أَمْرًۭا ۖ

something

amran

فَصَبْرٌۭ

so patience

faṣabrun

جَمِيلٌ ۖ

(is) beautiful

jamīlun

عَسَى

Perhaps

ʿasā

ٱللَّهُ

Allah

l-lahu

أَن

will bring them to me

an

يَأْتِيَنِى

will bring them to me

yatiyanī

بِهِمْ

will bring them to me

bihim

جَمِيعًا ۚ

all

jamīʿan

إِنَّهُۥ

Indeed, He

innahu

هُوَ

He

huwa

ٱلْعَلِيمُ

(is) the All-Knower

l-ʿalīmu

ٱلْحَكِيمُ

All-Wise

l-ḥakīmu

٨٣

[Jacob] said, "Rather, your souls have enticed you to something, so patience is most fitting. Perhaps Allāh will bring them to me all together. Indeed, it is He who is the Knowing, the Wise."

— Saheeh International

وَتَوَلَّىٰ

And he turned away

watawallā

عَنْهُمْ

from them

ʿanhum

وَقَالَ

and said

waqāla

يَـٰٓأَسَفَىٰ

Alas, my grief

yāasafā

عَلَىٰ

over

ʿalā

يُوسُفَ

Yusuf

yūsufa

وَٱبْيَضَّتْ

And became white

wa-ib'yaḍḍat

عَيْنَاهُ

his eyes

ʿaynāhu

مِنَ

from

mina

ٱلْحُزْنِ

the grief

l-ḥuz'ni

فَهُوَ

and he (was)

fahuwa

كَظِيمٌۭ

a suppressor

kaẓīmun

٨٤

And he turned away from them and said, "Oh, my sorrow over Joseph," and his eyes became white1 from grief, for he was [of that] a suppressor.2

— Saheeh International

قَالُوا۟

They said

qālū

تَٱللَّهِ

By Allah

tal-lahi

تَفْتَؤُا۟

you will not cease

tafta-u

تَذْكُرُ

remembering

tadhkuru

يُوسُفَ

Yusuf

yūsufa

حَتَّىٰ

until

ḥattā

تَكُونَ

you become

takūna

حَرَضًا

fatally ill

ḥaraḍan

أَوْ

or

aw

تَكُونَ

become

takūna

مِنَ

of

mina

ٱلْهَـٰلِكِينَ

those who perish

l-hālikīna

٨٥

They said, "By Allāh, you will not cease remembering Joseph until you become fatally ill or become of those who perish."

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

إِنَّمَآ

Only

innamā

أَشْكُوا۟

I complain

ashkū

بَثِّى

(of) my suffering

bathī

وَحُزْنِىٓ

and my grief

waḥuz'nī

إِلَى

to

ilā

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

وَأَعْلَمُ

and I know

wa-aʿlamu

مِنَ

from

mina

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

مَا

what

لَا

not

تَعْلَمُونَ

you know

taʿlamūna

٨٦

He said, "I only complain of my suffering and my grief to Allāh, and I know from Allāh that which you do not know.
