قَالَ He said qāla Allah forbid maʿādha Allah forbid l-lahi that an we take nakhudha except illā (one) who man we found wajadnā our possession matāʿanā with him ʿindahu Indeed, we innā then idhan surely (would be) wrongdoers laẓālimūna
He said, "[I seek] the refuge of Allāh [to prevent] that we take except him with whom we found our possession. Indeed, we would then be unjust."
فَلَمَّا So when falammā they despaired is'tayasū of him min'hu they secluded themselves khalaṣū (in) private consultation najiyyan Said qāla the eldest among them kabīruhum Do not alam you know taʿlamū that anna your father abākum has taken qad has taken akhadha upon you ʿalaykum a promise mawthiqan by mina Allah l-lahi and before wamin and before qablu that mā you failed farraṭtum concerning fī Yusuf yūsufa So never falan will I leave abraḥa the land l-arḍa until ḥattā permits yadhana me lī my father abī or aw Allah decides yaḥkuma Allah decides l-lahu for me lī and He wahuwa (is) the Best khayru (of) the judges l-ḥākimīna
So when they had despaired of him, they secluded themselves in private consultation. The eldest of them said, "Do you not know that your father has taken upon you an oath by Allāh and [that] before you failed in [your duty to] Joseph? So I will never leave [this] land until my father permits me or Allāh decides for me,1 and He is the best of judges.
ٱرْجِعُوٓا۟ Return ir'jiʿū to ilā your father abīkum and say faqūlū 'O our father yāabānā Indeed inna your son ib'naka has stolen saraqa and not wamā we testify shahid'nā except illā of what bimā we knew ʿalim'nā And not wamā we were kunnā of the unseen lil'ghaybi guardians ḥāfiẓīna
Return to your father and say, 'O our father, indeed your son has stolen, and we did not testify except to what we knew. And we were not witnesses of the unseen.1

[Jacob] said, "Rather, your souls have enticed you to something, so patience is most fitting. Perhaps Allāh will bring them to me all together. Indeed, it is He who is the Knowing, the Wise."
وَتَوَلَّىٰ And he turned away watawallā from them ʿanhum and said waqāla Alas, my grief yāasafā over ʿalā Yusuf yūsufa And became white wa-ib'yaḍḍat his eyes ʿaynāhu from mina the grief l-ḥuz'ni and he (was) fahuwa a suppressor kaẓīmun
And he turned away from them and said, "Oh, my sorrow over Joseph," and his eyes became white1 from grief, for he was [of that] a suppressor.2
قَالُوا۟ They said qālū By Allah tal-lahi you will not cease tafta-u remembering tadhkuru Yusuf yūsufa until ḥattā you become takūna fatally ill ḥaraḍan or aw become takūna of mina those who perish l-hālikīna
They said, "By Allāh, you will not cease remembering Joseph until you become fatally ill or become of those who perish."

He said, "I only complain of my suffering and my grief to Allāh, and I know from Allāh that which you do not know.
