فَلَمَّا

So when

falammā

جَهَّزَهُم

he had furnished them

jahhazahum

بِجَهَازِهِمْ

with their supplies

bijahāzihim

جَعَلَ

he put

jaʿala

ٱلسِّقَايَةَ

the drinking cup

l-siqāyata

فِى

in

رَحْلِ

the bag

raḥli

أَخِيهِ

(of) his brother

akhīhi

ثُمَّ

Then

thumma

أَذَّنَ

called out

adhana

مُؤَذِّنٌ

an announcer

mu-adhinun

أَيَّتُهَا

O you

ayyatuhā

ٱلْعِيرُ

(in) the caravan

l-ʿīru

إِنَّكُمْ

Indeed, you

innakum

لَسَـٰرِقُونَ

surely (are) thieves

lasāriqūna

٧٠

So when he had furnished them with their supplies, he put the [gold measuring] bowl into the bag of his brother. Then an announcer called out, "O caravan, indeed you are thieves."

— Saheeh International

قَالُوا۟

They said

qālū

وَأَقْبَلُوا۟

turning towards

wa-aqbalū

عَلَيْهِم

them

ʿalayhim

مَّاذَا

What (is it)

mādhā

تَفْقِدُونَ

you miss

tafqidūna

٧١

They said while approaching them, "What is it you are missing?"

— Saheeh International

قَالُوا۟

They said

qālū

نَفْقِدُ

We are missing

nafqidu

صُوَاعَ

(the) cup

ṣuwāʿa

ٱلْمَلِكِ

(of) the king

l-maliki

وَلِمَن

And for (one) who

waliman

جَآءَ

brings

jāa

بِهِۦ

it

bihi

حِمْلُ

(is) a load

ḥim'lu

بَعِيرٍۢ

(of) a camel

baʿīrin

وَأَنَا۠

and I

wa-anā

بِهِۦ

for it

bihi

زَعِيمٌۭ

(is) responsible

zaʿīmun

٧٢

They said, "We are missing the measure of the king. And for he who produces it is [the reward of] a camel's load, and I am responsible for it."

— Saheeh International

قَالُوا۟

They said

qālū

تَٱللَّهِ

By Allah

tal-lahi

لَقَدْ

certainly

laqad

عَلِمْتُم

you know

ʿalim'tum

مَّا

not

جِئْنَا

we came

ji'nā

لِنُفْسِدَ

that we cause corruption

linuf'sida

فِى

in

ٱلْأَرْضِ

the land

l-arḍi

وَمَا

and not

wamā

كُنَّا

we are

kunnā

سَـٰرِقِينَ

thieves

sāriqīna

٧٣

They said, "By Allāh, you have certainly known that we did not come to cause corruption in the land, and we have not been thieves."

— Saheeh International

قَالُوا۟

They said

qālū

فَمَا

Then what

famā

جَزَٰٓؤُهُۥٓ

(will be the) recompense (of) it

jazāuhu

إِن

if

in

كُنتُمْ

you are

kuntum

كَـٰذِبِينَ

liars

kādhibīna

٧٤

They [the accusers] said, "Then what would be its recompense1 if you should be liars?"

— Saheeh International

قَالُوا۟

They said

qālū

جَزَٰٓؤُهُۥ

Its recompense

jazāuhu

مَن

(is that one) who

man

وُجِدَ

it is found

wujida

فِى

in

رَحْلِهِۦ

his bag

raḥlihi

فَهُوَ

then he

fahuwa

جَزَٰٓؤُهُۥ ۚ

(will be) his recompense

jazāuhu

كَذَٰلِكَ

Thus

kadhālika

نَجْزِى

(do) we recompense

najzī

ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ

the wrongdoers

l-ẓālimīna

٧٥

[The brothers] said, "Its recompense is that he in whose bag it is found - he [himself] will be its recompense.1 Thus do we recompense the wrongdoers."

— Saheeh International

فَبَدَأَ

So he began

fabada-a

بِأَوْعِيَتِهِمْ

with their bags

bi-awʿiyatihim

قَبْلَ

before

qabla

وِعَآءِ

(the) bag

wiʿāi

أَخِيهِ

(of) his brother

akhīhi

ثُمَّ

then

thumma

ٱسْتَخْرَجَهَا

he brought it out

is'takhrajahā

مِن

from

min

وِعَآءِ

(the) bag

wiʿāi

أَخِيهِ ۚ

(of) his brother

akhīhi

كَذَٰلِكَ

Thus

kadhālika

كِدْنَا

(did) We plan

kid'nā

لِيُوسُفَ ۖ

for Yusuf

liyūsufa

مَا

He could not

كَانَ

He could not

kāna

لِيَأْخُذَ

take

liyakhudha

أَخَاهُ

his brother

akhāhu

فِى

by

دِينِ

the law

dīni

ٱلْمَلِكِ

(of) the king

l-maliki

إِلَّآ

except

illā

أَن

that

an

يَشَآءَ

Allah willed

yashāa

ٱللَّهُ ۚ

Allah willed

l-lahu

نَرْفَعُ

We raise

narfaʿu

دَرَجَـٰتٍۢ

(in) degrees

darajātin

مَّن

whom

man

نَّشَآءُ ۗ

We will

nashāu

وَفَوْقَ

but over

wafawqa

كُلِّ

every

kulli

ذِى

possessor

dhī

عِلْمٍ

(of) knowledge

ʿil'min

عَلِيمٌۭ

(is) the All-Knower

ʿalīmun

٧٦

So he began [the search] with their bags before the bag of his brother; then he extracted it from the bag of his brother. Thus did We plan for Joseph. He could not have taken his brother within the religion [i.e., law] of the king except that Allāh willed. We raise in degrees whom We will, but over every possessor of knowledge is one [more] knowing.1

— Saheeh International

۞ قَالُوٓا۟

They said

qālū

إِن

If

يَسْرِقْ

فَقَدْ

then verily

faqad

سَرَقَ

stole

saraqa

أَخٌۭ

a brother

akhun

لَّهُۥ

of his

lahu

مِن

before

قَبْلُ ۚ

فَأَسَرَّهَا

But Yusuf kept it secret

fa-asarrahā

يُوسُفُ

But Yusuf kept it secret

yūsufu

فِى

within

نَفْسِهِۦ

himself

nafsihi

وَلَمْ

and (did) not

walam

يُبْدِهَا

reveal it

yub'dihā

لَهُمْ ۚ

to them

lahum

قَالَ

He said

qāla

أَنتُمْ

You

antum

شَرٌّۭ

(are the) worse

sharrun

مَّكَانًۭا ۖ

(in) position

makānan

وَٱللَّهُ

and Allah

wal-lahu

أَعْلَمُ

knows best

aʿlamu

بِمَا

of what

bimā

تَصِفُونَ

you describe

taṣifūna

٧٧

They said, "If he steals - a brother of his has stolen before." But Joseph kept it within himself and did not reveal it to them.1 He said, "You are worse in position, and Allāh is most knowing of what you describe."

— Saheeh International

قَالُوا۟

They said

qālū

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا

O

yāayyuhā

ٱلْعَزِيزُ

Aziz

l-ʿazīzu

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

لَهُۥٓ

he has

lahu

أَبًۭا

a father

aban

شَيْخًۭا

old

shaykhan

كَبِيرًۭا

[great]

kabīran

فَخُذْ

so take

fakhudh

أَحَدَنَا

one of us

aḥadanā

مَكَانَهُۥٓ ۖ

(in) his place

makānahu

إِنَّا

Indeed, we

innā

نَرَىٰكَ

[we] see you

narāka

مِنَ

of

mina

ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ

the good-doers

l-muḥ'sinīna

٧٨

They said, "O ʿAzeez,1 indeed he has a father [who is] an old man, so take one of us in place of him. Indeed, we see you as a doer of good."

— Saheeh International
