فَلَمَّا So when falammā he had furnished them jahhazahum with their supplies bijahāzihim he put jaʿala the drinking cup l-siqāyata in fī the bag raḥli (of) his brother akhīhi Then thumma called out adhana an announcer mu-adhinun O you ayyatuhā (in) the caravan l-ʿīru Indeed, you innakum surely (are) thieves lasāriqūna
So when he had furnished them with their supplies, he put the [gold measuring] bowl into the bag of his brother. Then an announcer called out, "O caravan, indeed you are thieves."
قَالُوا۟ They said qālū turning towards wa-aqbalū them ʿalayhim What (is it) mādhā you miss tafqidūna
They said while approaching them, "What is it you are missing?"
قَالُوا۟ They said qālū We are missing nafqidu (the) cup ṣuwāʿa (of) the king l-maliki And for (one) who waliman brings jāa it bihi (is) a load ḥim'lu (of) a camel baʿīrin and I wa-anā for it bihi (is) responsible zaʿīmun
They said, "We are missing the measure of the king. And for he who produces it is [the reward of] a camel's load, and I am responsible for it."
قَالُوا۟ They said qālū By Allah tal-lahi certainly laqad you know ʿalim'tum not mā we came ji'nā that we cause corruption linuf'sida in fī the land l-arḍi and not wamā we are kunnā thieves sāriqīna
They said, "By Allāh, you have certainly known that we did not come to cause corruption in the land, and we have not been thieves."
قَالُوا۟ They said qālū Then what famā (will be the) recompense (of) it jazāuhu if in you are kuntum liars kādhibīna
They [the accusers] said, "Then what would be its recompense1 if you should be liars?"
قَالُوا۟ They said qālū Its recompense jazāuhu (is that one) who man it is found wujida in fī his bag raḥlihi then he fahuwa (will be) his recompense jazāuhu Thus kadhālika (do) we recompense najzī the wrongdoers l-ẓālimīna
[The brothers] said, "Its recompense is that he in whose bag it is found - he [himself] will be its recompense.1 Thus do we recompense the wrongdoers."
فَبَدَأَ So he began fabada-a with their bags bi-awʿiyatihim before qabla (the) bag wiʿāi (of) his brother akhīhi then thumma he brought it out is'takhrajahā from min (the) bag wiʿāi (of) his brother akhīhi Thus kadhālika (did) We plan kid'nā for Yusuf liyūsufa He could not mā He could not kāna take liyakhudha his brother akhāhu by fī the law dīni (of) the king l-maliki except illā that an Allah willed yashāa Allah willed l-lahu We raise narfaʿu (in) degrees darajātin whom man We will nashāu but over wafawqa every kulli possessor dhī (of) knowledge ʿil'min (is) the All-Knower ʿalīmun
So he began [the search] with their bags before the bag of his brother; then he extracted it from the bag of his brother. Thus did We plan for Joseph. He could not have taken his brother within the religion [i.e., law] of the king except that Allāh willed. We raise in degrees whom We will, but over every possessor of knowledge is one [more] knowing.1
۞ قَالُوٓا۟ They said qālū If in he steals yasriq then verily faqad stole saraqa a brother akhun of his lahu before min before qablu But Yusuf kept it secret fa-asarrahā But Yusuf kept it secret yūsufu within fī himself nafsihi and (did) not walam reveal it yub'dihā to them lahum He said qāla You antum (are the) worse sharrun (in) position makānan and Allah wal-lahu knows best aʿlamu of what bimā you describe taṣifūna
They said, "If he steals - a brother of his has stolen before." But Joseph kept it within himself and did not reveal it to them.1 He said, "You are worse in position, and Allāh is most knowing of what you describe."
قَالُوا۟ They said qālū O yāayyuhā Aziz l-ʿazīzu Indeed inna he has lahu a father aban old shaykhan [great] kabīran so take fakhudh one of us aḥadanā (in) his place makānahu Indeed, we innā [we] see you narāka of mina the good-doers l-muḥ'sinīna
They said, "O ʿAzeez,1 indeed he has a father [who is] an old man, so take one of us in place of him. Indeed, we see you as a doer of good."
