قَالَ He said qāla Should hal I entrust you āmanukum with him ʿalayhi except illā as kamā I entrusted you amintukum with ʿalā his brother akhīhi before min before qablu But Allah fal-lahu (is) the best khayrun Guardian ḥāfiẓan and He wahuwa (is the) Most Merciful arḥamu (of) the merciful l-rāḥimīna
He said, "Should I entrust you with him except [under coercion] as I entrusted you with his brother before? But Allāh is the best guardian, and He is the most merciful of the merciful."
وَلَمَّا And when walammā they opened fataḥū their baggage matāʿahum they found wajadū their merchandise biḍāʿatahum returned ruddat to them ilayhim They said qālū O our father yāabānā What mā (could) we desire nabghī This hādhihi (is) our merchandise biḍāʿatunā returned ruddat to us ilaynā And we will get provision wanamīru (for) our family ahlanā and we will protect wanaḥfaẓu our brother akhānā and get an increase wanazdādu measure kayla (of) a camel's (load) baʿīrin That dhālika (is) a measurement kaylun easy yasīrun
And when they opened their baggage, they found their merchandise returned to them. They said, "O our father, what [more] could we desire? This is our merchandise returned to us. And we will obtain supplies [i.e., food] for our family and protect our brother and obtain an increase of a camel's load; that is an easy measurement."1
قَالَ He said qāla Never lan will I send him ur'silahu with you maʿakum until ḥattā you give to me tu'tūni a promise mawthiqan by mina Allah l-lahi that surely you will bring him to me latatunnanī that surely you will bring him to me bihi unless illā that an you are surrounded yuḥāṭa you are surrounded bikum And when falammā they had given him ātawhu their promise mawthiqahum he said qāla Allah l-lahu over ʿalā what mā we say naqūlu (is) a Guardian wakīlun
[Jacob] said, "Never will I send him with you until you give me a promise [i.e., oath] by Allāh that you will bring him [back] to me, unless you should be surrounded [i.e., overcome by enemies]." And when they had given their promise, he said, "Allāh, over what we say, is Entrusted."1
وَقَالَ And he said waqāla O my sons yābaniyya (Do) not lā enter tadkhulū from min one gate bābin one gate wāḥidin but enter wa-ud'khulū from min gates abwābin different mutafarriqatin And not wamā I can avail ugh'nī you ʿankum against mina Allah l-lahi any min thing shayin Not ini (is) the decision l-ḥuk'mu except illā with Allah lillahi upon Him ʿalayhi I put my trust tawakkaltu and upon Him waʿalayhi let put (their) trust falyatawakkali the ones who put trust l-mutawakilūna
And he said, "O my sons, do not enter from one gate but enter from different gates; and I cannot avail you against [the decree of] Allāh at all. The decision is only for Allāh; upon Him I have relied, and upon Him let those who would rely [indeed] rely."
وَلَمَّا And when walammā they entered dakhalū from min where ḥaythu ordered them amarahum their father abūhum not mā it kāna avail(ed) yugh'nī them ʿanhum against mina Allah l-lahi any min thing shayin but illā (it was) a need ḥājatan of fī Yaqub's soul nafsi Yaqub's soul yaʿqūba which he carried out qaḍāhā And indeed, he wa-innahu (was) a possessor ladhū (of) knowledge ʿil'min because limā We had taught him ʿallamnāhu but walākinna most akthara (of) the people l-nāsi (do) not lā know yaʿlamūna
And when they entered from where their father had ordered them, it did not avail them against Allāh at all except [it was] a need [i.e., concern] within the soul of Jacob, which he satisfied. And indeed, he was a possessor of knowledge because of what We had taught him, but most of the people do not know.
وَلَمَّا And when walammā they entered dakhalū upon ʿalā Yusuf yūsufa he took āwā to himself ilayhi his brother akhāhu He said qāla Indeed, I innī [I] am anā your brother akhūka so (do) not falā grieve tabta-is for what bimā they used (to) kānū do yaʿmalūna
And when they entered upon Joseph, he took his brother to himself; he said, "Indeed, I am your brother, so do not despair over what they used to do [to me]."
