۞ وَمَآ And not wamā I absolve ubarri-u myself nafsī Indeed inna the soul l-nafsa (is) a certain enjoiner la-ammāratun of evil bil-sūi unless illā [that] mā bestows Mercy raḥima my Lord rabbī Indeed inna my Lord rabbī (is) Oft-Forgiving ghafūrun Most Merciful raḥīmun
And I do not acquit myself. Indeed, the soul is a persistent enjoiner of evil, except those upon which my Lord has mercy. Indeed, my Lord is Forgiving and Merciful."1
وَقَالَ And said waqāla the king l-maliku Bring him to me i'tūnī Bring him to me bihi I will select him astakhliṣ'hu for myself linafsī Then when falammā he spoke to him kallamahu he said qāla Indeed, you innaka (are) today l-yawma with us ladaynā firmly established makīnun (and) trusted amīnun
And the king said, "Bring him to me; I will appoint him exclusively for myself." And when he spoke to him, he said, "Indeed, you are today established [in position] and trusted."
قَالَ He said qāla Appoint me ij'ʿalnī over ʿalā (the) treasuries khazāini (of) the land l-arḍi Indeed, I innī (will be) a guardian ḥafīẓun knowing ʿalīmun
[Joseph] said, "Appoint me over the storehouses of the land. Indeed, I will be a knowing guardian."
وَكَذَٰلِكَ And thus wakadhālika We established makkannā [to] Yusuf liyūsufa in fī the land l-arḍi to settle yatabawwa-u therein min'hā where ever ḥaythu he willed yashāu We bestow nuṣību Our Mercy biraḥmatinā (on) whom man We will nashāu And not walā We let go waste nuḍīʿu (the) reward ajra (of) the good-doers l-muḥ'sinīna
And thus We established Joseph in the land to settle therein wherever he willed. We touch with Our mercy whom We will, and We do not allow to be lost the reward of those who do good.
وَلَأَجْرُ And surely (the) reward wala-ajru (of) the Hereafter l-ākhirati (is) better khayrun for those who lilladhīna believe āmanū and are wakānū God conscious yattaqūna
And the reward of the Hereafter is better for those who believed and were fearing Allāh.
وَجَآءَ And came wajāa (the) brothers ikh'watu (of) Yusuf yūsufa and they entered fadakhalū upon him ʿalayhi and he recognized them faʿarafahum but they wahum knew him not lahu knew him not munkirūna
And the brothers of Joseph came [seeking food], and they entered upon him; and he recognized them, but he was to them unknown.1
وَلَمَّا And when walammā he had furnished them jahhazahum with their supplies bijahāzihim he said qāla Bring to me i'tūnī a brother bi-akhin of yours lakum from min your father abīkum Do not alā you see tarawna that I annī [I] give full ūfī [the] measure l-kayla and that I am wa-anā (the) best khayru (of) the hosts l-munzilīna
And when he had furnished them with their supplies, he said, "Bring me a brother of yours from your father.1 Do you not see that I give full measure and that I am the best of accommodators?
فَإِن But if fa-in not lam you bring him to me tatūnī you bring him to me bihi then (there will be) no falā measure kayla for you lakum from me ʿindī and not walā you will come near me taqrabūni
But if you do not bring him to me, no measure will there be [hereafter] for you from me, nor will you approach me."
قَالُوا۟ They said qālū We will try to get permission sanurāwidu for him ʿanhu (from) his father abāhu and indeed we wa-innā surely will do lafāʿilūna
They said, "We will attempt to dissuade his father from [keeping] him, and indeed, we will do [it]."
وَقَالَ And he said waqāla to his servants lifit'yānihi Put ij'ʿalū their merchandise biḍāʿatahum in fī their saddlebags riḥālihim so that they laʿallahum may recognize it yaʿrifūnahā when idhā they go back inqalabū to ilā their people ahlihim so that they may laʿallahum return yarjiʿūna
And [Joseph] said to his servants, "Put their merchandise1 into their saddlebags so they might recognize it when they have gone back to their people that perhaps they will [again] return."
فَلَمَّا So when falammā they returned rajaʿū to ilā their father abīhim they said qālū O our father yāabānā Has been denied muniʿa to us minnā the measure l-kaylu so send fa-arsil with us maʿanā our brother akhānā (that) we will get measure naktal And indeed, we wa-innā for him lahu (will) surely (be) guardians laḥāfiẓūna
So when they returned to their father, they said, "O our father, [further] measure has been denied to us, so send with us our brother [that] we will be given measure. And indeed, we will be his guardians."
