۞ وَمَآ

And not

wamā

أُبَرِّئُ

I absolve

ubarri-u

نَفْسِىٓ ۚ

myself

nafsī

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱلنَّفْسَ

the soul

l-nafsa

لَأَمَّارَةٌۢ

(is) a certain enjoiner

la-ammāratun

بِٱلسُّوٓءِ

of evil

bil-sūi

إِلَّا

unless

illā

مَا

[that]

رَحِمَ

bestows Mercy

raḥima

رَبِّىٓ ۚ

my Lord

rabbī

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

رَبِّى

my Lord

rabbī

غَفُورٌۭ

(is) Oft-Forgiving

ghafūrun

رَّحِيمٌۭ

Most Merciful

raḥīmun

٥٣

And I do not acquit myself. Indeed, the soul is a persistent enjoiner of evil, except those upon which my Lord has mercy. Indeed, my Lord is Forgiving and Merciful."1

— Saheeh International

وَقَالَ

And said

waqāla

ٱلْمَلِكُ

the king

l-maliku

ٱئْتُونِى

Bring him to me

i'tūnī

بِهِۦٓ

Bring him to me

bihi

أَسْتَخْلِصْهُ

I will select him

astakhliṣ'hu

لِنَفْسِى ۖ

for myself

linafsī

فَلَمَّا

Then when

falammā

كَلَّمَهُۥ

he spoke to him

kallamahu

قَالَ

he said

qāla

إِنَّكَ

Indeed, you

innaka

ٱلْيَوْمَ

(are) today

l-yawma

لَدَيْنَا

with us

ladaynā

مَكِينٌ

firmly established

makīnun

أَمِينٌۭ

(and) trusted

amīnun

٥٤

And the king said, "Bring him to me; I will appoint him exclusively for myself." And when he spoke to him, he said, "Indeed, you are today established [in position] and trusted."

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

ٱجْعَلْنِى

Appoint me

ij'ʿalnī

عَلَىٰ

over

ʿalā

خَزَآئِنِ

(the) treasuries

khazāini

ٱلْأَرْضِ ۖ

(of) the land

l-arḍi

إِنِّى

Indeed, I

innī

حَفِيظٌ

(will be) a guardian

ḥafīẓun

عَلِيمٌۭ

knowing

ʿalīmun

٥٥

[Joseph] said, "Appoint me over the storehouses of the land. Indeed, I will be a knowing guardian."

— Saheeh International

وَكَذَٰلِكَ

And thus

wakadhālika

مَكَّنَّا

We established

makkannā

لِيُوسُفَ

[to] Yusuf

liyūsufa

فِى

in

ٱلْأَرْضِ

the land

l-arḍi

يَتَبَوَّأُ

to settle

yatabawwa-u

مِنْهَا

therein

min'hā

حَيْثُ

where ever

ḥaythu

يَشَآءُ ۚ

he willed

yashāu

نُصِيبُ

We bestow

nuṣību

بِرَحْمَتِنَا

Our Mercy

biraḥmatinā

مَن

(on) whom

man

نَّشَآءُ ۖ

We will

nashāu

وَلَا

And not

walā

نُضِيعُ

We let go waste

nuḍīʿu

أَجْرَ

(the) reward

ajra

ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ

(of) the good-doers

l-muḥ'sinīna

٥٦

And thus We established Joseph in the land to settle therein wherever he willed. We touch with Our mercy whom We will, and We do not allow to be lost the reward of those who do good.

— Saheeh International

وَلَأَجْرُ

And surely (the) reward

wala-ajru

ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ

(of) the Hereafter

l-ākhirati

خَيْرٌۭ

(is) better

khayrun

لِّلَّذِينَ

for those who

lilladhīna

ءَامَنُوا۟

believe

āmanū

وَكَانُوا۟

and are

wakānū

يَتَّقُونَ

God conscious

yattaqūna

٥٧

And the reward of the Hereafter is better for those who believed and were fearing Allāh.

— Saheeh International

وَجَآءَ

And came

wajāa

إِخْوَةُ

(the) brothers

ikh'watu

يُوسُفَ

(of) Yusuf

yūsufa

فَدَخَلُوا۟

and they entered

fadakhalū

عَلَيْهِ

upon him

ʿalayhi

فَعَرَفَهُمْ

and he recognized them

faʿarafahum

وَهُمْ

but they

wahum

لَهُۥ

knew him not

lahu

مُنكِرُونَ

knew him not

munkirūna

٥٨

And the brothers of Joseph came [seeking food], and they entered upon him; and he recognized them, but he was to them unknown.1

— Saheeh International

وَلَمَّا

And when

walammā

جَهَّزَهُم

he had furnished them

jahhazahum

بِجَهَازِهِمْ

with their supplies

bijahāzihim

قَالَ

he said

qāla

ٱئْتُونِى

Bring to me

i'tūnī

بِأَخٍۢ

a brother

bi-akhin

لَّكُم

of yours

lakum

مِّنْ

from

min

أَبِيكُمْ ۚ

your father

abīkum

أَلَا

Do not

alā

تَرَوْنَ

you see

tarawna

أَنِّىٓ

that I

annī

أُوفِى

[I] give full

ūfī

ٱلْكَيْلَ

[the] measure

l-kayla

وَأَنَا۠

and that I am

wa-anā

خَيْرُ

(the) best

khayru

ٱلْمُنزِلِينَ

(of) the hosts

l-munzilīna

٥٩

And when he had furnished them with their supplies, he said, "Bring me a brother of yours from your father.1 Do you not see that I give full measure and that I am the best of accommodators?

— Saheeh International

فَإِن

But if

fa-in

لَّمْ

not

lam

تَأْتُونِى

you bring him to me

tatūnī

بِهِۦ

you bring him to me

bihi

فَلَا

then (there will be) no

falā

كَيْلَ

measure

kayla

لَكُمْ

for you

lakum

عِندِى

from me

ʿindī

وَلَا

and not

walā

تَقْرَبُونِ

you will come near me

taqrabūni

٦٠

But if you do not bring him to me, no measure will there be [hereafter] for you from me, nor will you approach me."

— Saheeh International

قَالُوا۟

They said

qālū

سَنُرَٰوِدُ

We will try to get permission

sanurāwidu

عَنْهُ

for him

ʿanhu

أَبَاهُ

(from) his father

abāhu

وَإِنَّا

and indeed we

wa-innā

لَفَـٰعِلُونَ

surely will do

lafāʿilūna

٦١

They said, "We will attempt to dissuade his father from [keeping] him, and indeed, we will do [it]."

— Saheeh International

وَقَالَ

And he said

waqāla

لِفِتْيَـٰنِهِ

to his servants

lifit'yānihi

ٱجْعَلُوا۟

Put

ij'ʿalū

بِضَـٰعَتَهُمْ

their merchandise

biḍāʿatahum

فِى

in

رِحَالِهِمْ

their saddlebags

riḥālihim

لَعَلَّهُمْ

so that they

laʿallahum

يَعْرِفُونَهَآ

may recognize it

yaʿrifūnahā

إِذَا

when

idhā

ٱنقَلَبُوٓا۟

they go back

inqalabū

إِلَىٰٓ

to

ilā

أَهْلِهِمْ

their people

ahlihim

لَعَلَّهُمْ

so that they may

laʿallahum

يَرْجِعُونَ

return

yarjiʿūna

٦٢

And [Joseph] said to his servants, "Put their merchandise1 into their saddlebags so they might recognize it when they have gone back to their people that perhaps they will [again] return."

— Saheeh International

فَلَمَّا

So when

falammā

رَجَعُوٓا۟

they returned

rajaʿū

إِلَىٰٓ

to

ilā

أَبِيهِمْ

their father

abīhim

قَالُوا۟

they said

qālū

يَـٰٓأَبَانَا

O our father

yāabānā

مُنِعَ

Has been denied

muniʿa

مِنَّا

to us

minnā

ٱلْكَيْلُ

the measure

l-kaylu

فَأَرْسِلْ

so send

fa-arsil

مَعَنَآ

with us

maʿanā

أَخَانَا

our brother

akhānā

نَكْتَلْ

(that) we will get measure

naktal

وَإِنَّا

And indeed, we

wa-innā

لَهُۥ

for him

lahu

لَحَـٰفِظُونَ

(will) surely (be) guardians

laḥāfiẓūna

٦٣

So when they returned to their father, they said, "O our father, [further] measure has been denied to us, so send with us our brother [that] we will be given measure. And indeed, we will be his guardians."

— Saheeh International
