قَالُوٓا۟ They said qālū Confused aḍghāthu dreams aḥlāmin and not wamā we naḥnu (are) in the interpretation bitawīli (of) the dreams l-aḥlāmi learned biʿālimīna
They said, "[It is but] a mixture of false dreams, and we are not learned in the interpretation of dreams."
وَقَالَ But said waqāla the one who alladhī was saved najā of the two min'humā and remembered wa-iddakara after baʿda a period ummatin I anā [I] will inform you unabbi-ukum of its interpretation bitawīlihi so send me forth fa-arsilūni
But the one who was freed and remembered after a time said, "I will inform you of its interpretation, so send me forth."
يُوسُفُ Yusuf yūsufu O ayyuhā the truthful one l-ṣidīqu Explain to us aftinā about fī (the) seven sabʿi cows baqarātin fat simānin eating them yakuluhunna seven sabʿun lean ones ʿijāfun and seven wasabʿi ears (of corn) sunbulātin green khuḍ'rin and other wa-ukhara dry yābisātin that I may laʿallī return arjiʿu to ilā the people l-nāsi so that they may laʿallahum know yaʿlamūna
[He said], "Joseph, O man of truth, explain to us about seven fat cows eaten by seven [that were] lean, and seven green spikes [of grain] and others [that were] dry - that I may return to the people [i.e., the king and his court]; perhaps they will know [about you]."
قَالَ He said qāla You will sow tazraʿūna (for) seven sabʿa years sinīna as usual da-aban and that which famā you reap ḥaṣadttum so leave it fadharūhu in fī its ears sunbulihi except illā a little qalīlan from which mimmā you (will) eat takulūna
[Joseph] said, "You will plant for seven years consecutively; and what you harvest leave in its spikes, except a little from which you will eat.
ثُمَّ Then thumma will come yatī after min after baʿdi that dhālika seven sabʿun hard (years) shidādun (which will) consume yakul'na what mā you advanced qaddamtum for them lahunna except illā a little qalīlan of what mimmā you (will) store tuḥ'ṣinūna
Then will come after that seven difficult [years] which will consume what you advanced [i.e., saved] for them, except a little from which you will store.
ثُمَّ Then thumma will come yatī after min after baʿdi that dhālika a year ʿāmun in it fīhi will be given abundant rain yughāthu the people l-nāsu and in it wafīhi they will press yaʿṣirūna
Then will come after that a year in which the people will be given rain and in which they will press [olives and grapes]."
وَقَالَ And said waqāla the king l-maliku Bring him to me i'tūnī Bring him to me bihi But when falammā came to him jāahu the messenger l-rasūlu he said qāla Return ir'jiʿ to ilā your lord rabbika and ask him fasalhu what mā (is the) case bālu (of) the women l-nis'wati who allātī cut qaṭṭaʿna their hands aydiyahunna Indeed inna my Lord rabbī of their plot bikaydihinna (is) All-Knower ʿalīmun
And the king said, "Bring him to me." But when the messenger came to him, [Joseph] said, "Return to your master and ask him what is the case of the women who cut their hands. Indeed, my Lord is Knowing of their plan."
قَالَ He said qāla What mā (was) your affair khaṭbukunna when idh you sought to seduce rāwadttunna Yusuf yūsufa from ʿan himself nafsihi They said qul'na Allah forbid ḥāsha Allah forbid lillahi Not mā we know ʿalim'nā about him ʿalayhi any min evil sūin Said qālati (the) wife im'ra-atu (of) Aziz l-ʿazīzi Now l-āna (is) manifest ḥaṣḥaṣa the truth l-ḥaqu I anā sought to seduce him rāwadttuhu from ʿan himself nafsihi and indeed, he wa-innahu (is) surely of lamina the truthful l-ṣādiqīna
Said [the king to the women], "What was your condition when you sought to seduce Joseph?" They said, "Perfect is Allāh!1 We know about him no evil." The wife of al-ʿAzeez said, "Now the truth has become evident. It was I who sought to seduce him, and indeed, he is of the truthful.
ذَٰلِكَ That dhālika he may know liyaʿlama that I annī not lam [I] betray him akhun'hu in secret bil-ghaybi and that wa-anna Allah l-laha (does) not lā guide yahdī (the) plan kayda (of) the betrayers l-khāinīna
That is so he [i.e., al-ʿAzeez] will know that I did not betray him in [his] absence and that Allāh does not guide the plan of betrayers.
