قَالُوٓا۟

They said

qālū

أَضْغَـٰثُ

Confused

aḍghāthu

أَحْلَـٰمٍۢ ۖ

dreams

aḥlāmin

وَمَا

and not

wamā

نَحْنُ

we

naḥnu

بِتَأْوِيلِ

(are) in the interpretation

bitawīli

ٱلْأَحْلَـٰمِ

(of) the dreams

l-aḥlāmi

بِعَـٰلِمِينَ

learned

biʿālimīna

٤٤

They said, "[It is but] a mixture of false dreams, and we are not learned in the interpretation of dreams."

— Saheeh International

وَقَالَ

But said

waqāla

ٱلَّذِى

the one who

alladhī

نَجَا

was saved

najā

مِنْهُمَا

of the two

min'humā

وَٱدَّكَرَ

and remembered

wa-iddakara

بَعْدَ

after

baʿda

أُمَّةٍ

a period

ummatin

أَنَا۠

I

anā

أُنَبِّئُكُم

[I] will inform you

unabbi-ukum

بِتَأْوِيلِهِۦ

of its interpretation

bitawīlihi

فَأَرْسِلُونِ

so send me forth

fa-arsilūni

٤٥

But the one who was freed and remembered after a time said, "I will inform you of its interpretation, so send me forth."

— Saheeh International

أَيُّهَا

O

ayyuhā

ٱلصِّدِّيقُ

the truthful one

l-ṣidīqu

أَفْتِنَا

Explain to us

(the) seven

بَقَرَٰتٍۢ

cows

baqarātin

سِمَانٍۢ

fat

simānin

يَأْكُلُهُنَّ

eating them

yakuluhunna

سَبْعٌ

seven

sabʿun

عِجَافٌۭ

lean ones

ʿijāfun

وَسَبْعِ

and seven

wasabʿi

سُنۢبُلَـٰتٍ

ears (of corn)

sunbulātin

خُضْرٍۢ

green

khuḍ'rin

وَأُخَرَ

and other

wa-ukhara

يَابِسَـٰتٍۢ

dry

yābisātin

لَّعَلِّىٓ

that I may

laʿallī

أَرْجِعُ

return

arjiʿu

إِلَى

to

ilā

ٱلنَّاسِ

the people

l-nāsi

لَعَلَّهُمْ

so that they may

laʿallahum

يَعْلَمُونَ

know

yaʿlamūna

٤٦

[He said], "Joseph, O man of truth, explain to us about seven fat cows eaten by seven [that were] lean, and seven green spikes [of grain] and others [that were] dry - that I may return to the people [i.e., the king and his court]; perhaps they will know [about you]."

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

تَزْرَعُونَ

You will sow

tazraʿūna

سَبْعَ

(for) seven

sabʿa

سِنِينَ

years

sinīna

دَأَبًۭا

as usual

da-aban

فَمَا

and that which

famā

حَصَدتُّمْ

you reap

ḥaṣadttum

فَذَرُوهُ

so leave it

fadharūhu

فِى

in

سُنۢبُلِهِۦٓ

its ears

sunbulihi

إِلَّا

except

illā

قَلِيلًۭا

a little

qalīlan

مِّمَّا

from which

mimmā

تَأْكُلُونَ

you (will) eat

takulūna

٤٧

[Joseph] said, "You will plant for seven years consecutively; and what you harvest leave in its spikes, except a little from which you will eat.

— Saheeh International

ثُمَّ

Then

thumma

يَأْتِى

will come

yatī

مِنۢ

after

بَعْدِ

after

baʿdi

ذَٰلِكَ

that

dhālika

سَبْعٌۭ

seven

sabʿun

شِدَادٌۭ

hard (years)

يَأْكُلْنَ

(which will) consume

you advanced

qaddamtum

لَهُنَّ

for them

lahunna

إِلَّا

except

illā

قَلِيلًۭا

a little

qalīlan

مِّمَّا

of what

mimmā

تُحْصِنُونَ

you (will) store

tuḥ'ṣinūna

٤٨

Then will come after that seven difficult [years] which will consume what you advanced [i.e., saved] for them, except a little from which you will store.

— Saheeh International

ثُمَّ

Then

thumma

يَأْتِى

will come

yatī

مِنۢ

after

min

بَعْدِ

after

baʿdi

ذَٰلِكَ

that

dhālika

عَامٌۭ

a year

ʿāmun

فِيهِ

in it

fīhi

يُغَاثُ

will be given abundant rain

yughāthu

ٱلنَّاسُ

the people

l-nāsu

وَفِيهِ

and in it

wafīhi

يَعْصِرُونَ

they will press

yaʿṣirūna

٤٩

Then will come after that a year in which the people will be given rain and in which they will press [olives and grapes]."

— Saheeh International

وَقَالَ

And said

waqāla

ٱلْمَلِكُ

the king

l-maliku

ٱئْتُونِى

Bring him to me

i'tūnī

بِهِۦ ۖ

Bring him to me

bihi

فَلَمَّا

But when

falammā

جَآءَهُ

came to him

jāahu

ٱلرَّسُولُ

the messenger

l-rasūlu

قَالَ

he said

qāla

ٱرْجِعْ

Return

ir'jiʿ

إِلَىٰ

to

ilā

رَبِّكَ

your lord

rabbika

فَسْـَٔلْهُ

and ask him

fasalhu

مَا

what

بَالُ

(is the) case

bālu

ٱلنِّسْوَةِ

(of) the women

l-nis'wati

ٱلَّـٰتِى

who

allātī

قَطَّعْنَ

cut

qaṭṭaʿna

أَيْدِيَهُنَّ ۚ

their hands

aydiyahunna

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

رَبِّى

my Lord

rabbī

بِكَيْدِهِنَّ

of their plot

bikaydihinna

عَلِيمٌۭ

(is) All-Knower

ʿalīmun

٥٠

And the king said, "Bring him to me." But when the messenger came to him, [Joseph] said, "Return to your master and ask him what is the case of the women who cut their hands. Indeed, my Lord is Knowing of their plan."

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

(was) your affair

إِذْ

رَٰوَدتُّنَّ

you sought to seduce

rāwadttunna

يُوسُفَ

Yusuf

عَن

ʿan

نَّفْسِهِۦ ۚ

himself

nafsihi

قُلْنَ

They said

qul'na

حَـٰشَ

Allah forbid

ḥāsha

لِلَّهِ

Allah forbid

lillahi

مَا

Not

عَلِمْنَا

we know

ʿalim'nā

عَلَيْهِ

about him

ʿalayhi

مِن

any

min

سُوٓءٍۢ ۚ

evil

sūin

قَالَتِ

Said

qālati

ٱمْرَأَتُ

(the) wife

im'ra-atu

ٱلْعَزِيزِ

(of) Aziz

l-ʿazīzi

ٱلْـَٔـٰنَ

Now

l-āna

حَصْحَصَ

(is) manifest

ḥaṣḥaṣa

ٱلْحَقُّ

the truth

l-ḥaqu

أَنَا۠

I

anā

رَٰوَدتُّهُۥ

sought to seduce him

rāwadttuhu

عَن

from

ʿan

نَّفْسِهِۦ

himself

nafsihi

وَإِنَّهُۥ

and indeed, he

wa-innahu

لَمِنَ

(is) surely of

lamina

ٱلصَّـٰدِقِينَ

the truthful

l-ṣādiqīna

٥١

Said [the king to the women], "What was your condition when you sought to seduce Joseph?" They said, "Perfect is Allāh!1 We know about him no evil." The wife of al-ʿAzeez said, "Now the truth has become evident. It was I who sought to seduce him, and indeed, he is of the truthful.

— Saheeh International

ذَٰلِكَ

That

dhālika

لِيَعْلَمَ

he may know

liyaʿlama

أَنِّى

that I

annī

لَمْ

not

lam

أَخُنْهُ

[I] betray him

akhun'hu

بِٱلْغَيْبِ

in secret

bil-ghaybi

وَأَنَّ

and that

wa-anna

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

لَا

(does) not

يَهْدِى

guide

yahdī

كَيْدَ

(the) plan

kayda

ٱلْخَآئِنِينَ

(of) the betrayers

l-khāinīna

٥٢

That is so he [i.e., al-ʿAzeez] will know that I did not betray him in [his] absence and that Allāh does not guide the plan of betrayers.

— Saheeh International
