وَٱتَّبَعْتُ

And I follow

wa-ittabaʿtu

مِلَّةَ

(the) religion

millata

ءَابَآءِىٓ

(of) my forefathers

ābāī

إِبْرَٰهِيمَ

Ibrahim

ib'rāhīma

وَإِسْحَـٰقَ

and Isaac

wa-is'ḥāqa

وَيَعْقُوبَ ۚ

and Yaqub

wayaʿqūba

مَا

Not

كَانَ

was

kāna

لَنَآ

for us

lanā

أَن

that

an

نُّشْرِكَ

we associate

nush'rika

بِٱللَّهِ

with Allah

bil-lahi

مِن

any

min

شَىْءٍۢ ۚ

thing

shayin

ذَٰلِكَ

That

dhālika

مِن

(is) from

min

فَضْلِ

(the) Grace

faḍli

ٱللَّهِ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

عَلَيْنَا

upon us

ʿalaynā

وَعَلَى

and upon

waʿalā

ٱلنَّاسِ

the mankind

l-nāsi

وَلَـٰكِنَّ

but

walākinna

أَكْثَرَ

most

akthara

ٱلنَّاسِ

(of) the men

l-nāsi

لَا

(are) not

يَشْكُرُونَ

grateful

yashkurūna

٣٨

And I have followed the religion of my fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. And it was not for us to associate anything with Allāh. That is from the favor of Allāh upon us and upon the people, but most of the people are not grateful.

— Saheeh International

يَـٰصَـٰحِبَىِ

O my two companions

yāṣāḥibayi

ٱلسِّجْنِ

(of) the prison

l-sij'ni

ءَأَرْبَابٌۭ

Are lords

a-arbābun

مُّتَفَرِّقُونَ

separate

mutafarriqūna

خَيْرٌ

better

khayrun

أَمِ

or

ami

ٱللَّهُ

Allah

l-lahu

ٱلْوَٰحِدُ

the One

l-wāḥidu

ٱلْقَهَّارُ

the Irresistible

l-qahāru

٣٩

O [my] two companions of prison, are separate lords better or Allāh, the One,1 the Prevailing?2

— Saheeh International

مَا

Not

تَعْبُدُونَ

you worship

taʿbudūna

مِن

besides Him

min

دُونِهِۦٓ

besides Him

dūnihi

إِلَّآ

but

illā

أَسْمَآءًۭ

names

asmāan

سَمَّيْتُمُوهَآ

which you have named them

sammaytumūhā

أَنتُمْ

you

antum

وَءَابَآؤُكُم

and your forefathers

waābāukum

مَّآ

not

أَنزَلَ

(has) sent down

anzala

ٱللَّهُ

Allah

l-lahu

بِهَا

for it

bihā

مِن

any

min

سُلْطَـٰنٍ ۚ

authority

sul'ṭānin

إِنِ

Not

ini

ٱلْحُكْمُ

(is) the command

l-ḥuk'mu

إِلَّا

but

illā

لِلَّهِ ۚ

for Allah

lillahi

أَمَرَ

He has commanded

amara

أَلَّا

that not

allā

تَعْبُدُوٓا۟

you worship

taʿbudū

إِلَّآ

but

illā

إِيَّاهُ ۚ

Him Alone

iyyāhu

ذَٰلِكَ

That

dhālika

ٱلدِّينُ

(is) the religion

l-dīnu

ٱلْقَيِّمُ

the right

l-qayimu

وَلَـٰكِنَّ

but

walākinna

أَكْثَرَ

most

akthara

ٱلنَّاسِ

[the] men

l-nāsi

لَا

(do) not

يَعْلَمُونَ

know

yaʿlamūna

٤٠

You worship not besides Him except [mere] names you have named them,1 you and your fathers, for which Allāh has sent down no evidence. Legislation is not but for Allāh. He has commanded that you worship not except Him. That is the correct religion, but most of the people do not know.

— Saheeh International

يَـٰصَـٰحِبَىِ

O my two companions

yāṣāḥibayi

ٱلسِّجْنِ

(of) the prison

l-sij'ni

أَمَّآ

As for

ammā

أَحَدُكُمَا

one of you

aḥadukumā

فَيَسْقِى

he will give drink

fayasqī

رَبَّهُۥ

(to) his master

rabbahu

خَمْرًۭا ۖ

wine

khamran

وَأَمَّا

and as for

wa-ammā

ٱلْـَٔاخَرُ

the other

l-ākharu

فَيُصْلَبُ

he will be crucified

fayuṣ'labu

فَتَأْكُلُ

and will eat

fatakulu

ٱلطَّيْرُ

the birds

l-ṭayru

مِن

from

min

رَّأْسِهِۦ ۚ

his head

rasihi

قُضِىَ

Has been decreed

quḍiya

ٱلْأَمْرُ

the matter

l-amru

ٱلَّذِى

about which

alladhī

فِيهِ

about which

fīhi

تَسْتَفْتِيَانِ

you both inquire

tastaftiyāni

٤١

O two companions of prison, as for one of you, he will give drink to his master of wine; but as for the other, he will be crucified, and the birds will eat from his head. The matter has been decreed about which you both inquire."

— Saheeh International

وَقَالَ

And he said

waqāla

لِلَّذِى

to the one whom

lilladhī

ظَنَّ

he thought

ẓanna

أَنَّهُۥ

that he

annahu

نَاجٍۢ

(would be) saved

nājin

مِّنْهُمَا

of both of them

min'humā

ٱذْكُرْنِى

Mention me

udh'kur'nī

عِندَ

to

ʿinda

رَبِّكَ

your master

rabbika

فَأَنسَىٰهُ

But made him forget

fa-ansāhu

ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنُ

the Shaitaan

l-shayṭānu

ذِكْرَ

(the) mention

dhik'ra

رَبِّهِۦ

(to) his master

rabbihi

فَلَبِثَ

so he remained

falabitha

فِى

in

ٱلسِّجْنِ

the prison

l-sij'ni

بِضْعَ

several

biḍ'ʿa

سِنِينَ

years

sinīna

٤٢

And he said to the one whom he knew would go free, "Mention me before your master." But Satan made him forget the mention [to] his master, and he [i.e., Joseph] remained in prison several years.

— Saheeh International

وَقَالَ

And said

waqāla

ٱلْمَلِكُ

the king

l-maliku

إِنِّىٓ

Indeed, I

أَرَىٰ

[I] have seen

arā

سَبْعَ

seven

sabʿa

بَقَرَٰتٍۢ

cows

baqarātin

سِمَانٍۢ

fat

simānin

يَأْكُلُهُنَّ

eating them

yakuluhunna

سَبْعٌ

seven

sabʿun

عِجَافٌۭ

lean ones

ʿijāfun

وَسَبْعَ

and seven

wasabʿa

سُنۢبُلَـٰتٍ

ears (of corn)

sunbulātin

خُضْرٍۢ

green

khuḍ'rin

وَأُخَرَ

and others

wa-ukhara

يَابِسَـٰتٍۢ ۖ

dry

yābisātin

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا

O

yāayyuhā

ٱلْمَلَأُ

chiefs

l-mala-u

أَفْتُونِى

Explain to me

aftūnī

فِى

about

رُءْيَـٰىَ

my vision

ru'yāya

إِن

if

in

كُنتُمْ

you can

kuntum

لِلرُّءْيَا

of visions

lilrru'yā

تَعْبُرُونَ

interpret

taʿburūna

٤٣

And [subsequently] the king said, "Indeed, I have seen [in a dream] seven fat cows being eaten by seven [that were] lean, and seven green spikes [of grain] and others [that were] dry. O eminent ones, explain to me my vision, if you should interpret visions."

— Saheeh International
