وَٱتَّبَعْتُ And I follow wa-ittabaʿtu (the) religion millata (of) my forefathers ābāī Ibrahim ib'rāhīma and Isaac wa-is'ḥāqa and Yaqub wayaʿqūba Not mā was kāna for us lanā that an we associate nush'rika with Allah bil-lahi any min thing shayin That dhālika (is) from min (the) Grace faḍli (of) Allah l-lahi upon us ʿalaynā and upon waʿalā the mankind l-nāsi but walākinna most akthara (of) the men l-nāsi (are) not lā grateful yashkurūna
And I have followed the religion of my fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. And it was not for us to associate anything with Allāh. That is from the favor of Allāh upon us and upon the people, but most of the people are not grateful.
يَـٰصَـٰحِبَىِ O my two companions yāṣāḥibayi (of) the prison l-sij'ni Are lords a-arbābun separate mutafarriqūna better khayrun or ami Allah l-lahu the One l-wāḥidu the Irresistible l-qahāru
O [my] two companions of prison, are separate lords better or Allāh, the One,1 the Prevailing?2
مَا Not mā you worship taʿbudūna besides Him min besides Him dūnihi but illā names asmāan which you have named them sammaytumūhā you antum and your forefathers waābāukum not mā (has) sent down anzala Allah l-lahu for it bihā any min authority sul'ṭānin Not ini (is) the command l-ḥuk'mu but illā for Allah lillahi He has commanded amara that not allā you worship taʿbudū but illā Him Alone iyyāhu That dhālika (is) the religion l-dīnu the right l-qayimu but walākinna most akthara [the] men l-nāsi (do) not lā know yaʿlamūna
You worship not besides Him except [mere] names you have named them,1 you and your fathers, for which Allāh has sent down no evidence. Legislation is not but for Allāh. He has commanded that you worship not except Him. That is the correct religion, but most of the people do not know.
يَـٰصَـٰحِبَىِ O my two companions yāṣāḥibayi (of) the prison l-sij'ni As for ammā one of you aḥadukumā he will give drink fayasqī (to) his master rabbahu wine khamran and as for wa-ammā the other l-ākharu he will be crucified fayuṣ'labu and will eat fatakulu the birds l-ṭayru from min his head rasihi Has been decreed quḍiya the matter l-amru about which alladhī about which fīhi you both inquire tastaftiyāni
O two companions of prison, as for one of you, he will give drink to his master of wine; but as for the other, he will be crucified, and the birds will eat from his head. The matter has been decreed about which you both inquire."
وَقَالَ And he said waqāla to the one whom lilladhī he thought ẓanna that he annahu (would be) saved nājin of both of them min'humā Mention me udh'kur'nī to ʿinda your master rabbika But made him forget fa-ansāhu the Shaitaan l-shayṭānu (the) mention dhik'ra (to) his master rabbihi so he remained falabitha in fī the prison l-sij'ni several biḍ'ʿa years sinīna
And he said to the one whom he knew would go free, "Mention me before your master." But Satan made him forget the mention [to] his master, and he [i.e., Joseph] remained in prison several years.
وَقَالَ And said waqāla the king l-maliku Indeed, I innī [I] have seen arā seven sabʿa cows baqarātin fat simānin eating them yakuluhunna seven sabʿun lean ones ʿijāfun and seven wasabʿa ears (of corn) sunbulātin green khuḍ'rin and others wa-ukhara dry yābisātin O yāayyuhā chiefs l-mala-u Explain to me aftūnī about fī my vision ru'yāya if in you can kuntum of visions lilrru'yā interpret taʿburūna
And [subsequently] the king said, "Indeed, I have seen [in a dream] seven fat cows being eaten by seven [that were] lean, and seven green spikes [of grain] and others [that were] dry. O eminent ones, explain to me my vision, if you should interpret visions."
