فَلَمَّا

So when

falammā

سَمِعَتْ

she heard

samiʿat

بِمَكْرِهِنَّ

of their scheming

bimakrihinna

أَرْسَلَتْ

she sent

arsalat

إِلَيْهِنَّ

for them

ilayhinna

وَأَعْتَدَتْ

and she prepared

wa-aʿtadat

لَهُنَّ

for them

lahunna

مُتَّكَـًۭٔا

a banquet

muttaka-an

وَءَاتَتْ

and she gave

waātat

كُلَّ

each

kulla

وَٰحِدَةٍۢ

one

wāḥidatin

مِّنْهُنَّ

of them

min'hunna

سِكِّينًۭا

a knife

sikkīnan

وَقَالَتِ

and she said

waqālati

ٱخْرُجْ

Come out

ukh'ruj

عَلَيْهِنَّ ۖ

before them

ʿalayhinna

فَلَمَّا

Then when

falammā

رَأَيْنَهُۥٓ

they saw him

ra-aynahu

أَكْبَرْنَهُۥ

they greatly admired him

akbarnahu

وَقَطَّعْنَ

and cut

waqaṭṭaʿna

أَيْدِيَهُنَّ

their hands

aydiyahunna

وَقُلْنَ

they said

waqul'na

حَـٰشَ

Forbid

ḥāsha

لِلَّهِ

Allah

lillahi

مَا

not

هَـٰذَا

(is) this

hādhā

بَشَرًا

a man

basharan

إِنْ

not

in

هَـٰذَآ

(is) this

hādhā

إِلَّا

but

illā

مَلَكٌۭ

an angel

malakun

كَرِيمٌۭ

noble

karīmun

٣١

So when she heard of their scheming, she sent for them and prepared for them a banquet and gave each one of them a knife and said [to Joseph], "Come out before them." And when they saw him, they greatly admired him and cut their hands1 and said, "Perfect is Allāh!2 This is not a man; this is none but a noble angel."

— Saheeh International

قَالَتْ

She said

qālat

فَذَٰلِكُنَّ

That

fadhālikunna

ٱلَّذِى

(is) the one

alladhī

لُمْتُنَّنِى

you blamed me

lum'tunnanī

فِيهِ ۖ

about him

fīhi

وَلَقَدْ

And certainly

walaqad

رَٰوَدتُّهُۥ

I sought to seduce him

rāwadttuhu

عَن

[from]

ʿan

نَّفْسِهِۦ

[himself]

nafsihi

فَٱسْتَعْصَمَ ۖ

but he saved himself

fa-is'taʿṣama

وَلَئِن

and if

wala-in

لَّمْ

not

lam

يَفْعَلْ

he does

yafʿal

مَآ

what

ءَامُرُهُۥ

I order him

āmuruhu

لَيُسْجَنَنَّ

surely, he will be imprisoned

layus'jananna

وَلَيَكُونًۭا

and certainly will be

walayakūnan

مِّنَ

of

mina

ٱلصَّـٰغِرِينَ

those who are disgraced

l-ṣāghirīna

٣٢

She said, "That is the one about whom you blamed me. And I certainly sought to seduce him, but he firmly refused; and if he will not do what I order him, he will surely be imprisoned and will be of those debased."

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

رَبِّ

My Lord

rabbi

ٱلسِّجْنُ

the prison

l-sij'nu

أَحَبُّ

(is) dearer

aḥabbu

إِلَىَّ

to me

ilayya

مِمَّا

than what

mimmā

يَدْعُونَنِىٓ

they invite me

yadʿūnanī

إِلَيْهِ ۖ

to it

ilayhi

وَإِلَّا

And unless

wa-illā

تَصْرِفْ

You turn away

taṣrif

عَنِّى

from me

ʿannī

كَيْدَهُنَّ

their plot

kaydahunna

أَصْبُ

I might incline

aṣbu

إِلَيْهِنَّ

towards them

ilayhinna

وَأَكُن

and [I] be

wa-akun

مِّنَ

of

mina

ٱلْجَـٰهِلِينَ

the ignorant

l-jāhilīna

٣٣

He said, "My Lord, prison is more to my liking than that to which they invite me. And if You do not avert from me their plan, I might incline toward them and [thus] be of the ignorant."

— Saheeh International

فَٱسْتَجَابَ

So responded

fa-is'tajāba

لَهُۥ

to him

lahu

رَبُّهُۥ

his Lord

rabbuhu

فَصَرَفَ

and turned away

faṣarafa

عَنْهُ

from him

ʿanhu

كَيْدَهُنَّ ۚ

their plot

kaydahunna

إِنَّهُۥ

Indeed, [He]

innahu

هُوَ

He

huwa

ٱلسَّمِيعُ

(is) All-Hearer

l-samīʿu

ٱلْعَلِيمُ

All-Knower

l-ʿalīmu

٣٤

So his Lord responded to him and averted from him their plan. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Knowing.

— Saheeh International

ثُمَّ

Then

thumma

بَدَا

(it) appeared

badā

لَهُم

to them

lahum

مِّنۢ

after

min

بَعْدِ

after

baʿdi

مَا

[what]

رَأَوُا۟

they had seen

ra-awū

ٱلْـَٔايَـٰتِ

the signs

l-āyāti

لَيَسْجُنُنَّهُۥ

surely they should imprison him

layasjununnahu

حَتَّىٰ

until

ḥattā

حِينٍۢ

a time

ḥīnin

٣٥

Then it appeared to them after they had seen the signs1 that he [i.e., al-ʿAzeez] should surely imprison him for a time.2

— Saheeh International

وَدَخَلَ

And entered

wadakhala

مَعَهُ

with him

maʿahu

ٱلسِّجْنَ

(in) the prison

l-sij'na

فَتَيَانِ ۖ

two young men

fatayāni

قَالَ

Said

qāla

أَحَدُهُمَآ

one of them

aḥaduhumā

إِنِّىٓ

Indeed, I

innī

أَرَىٰنِىٓ

[I] see myself

arānī

أَعْصِرُ

pressing

aʿṣiru

خَمْرًۭا ۖ

wine

khamran

وَقَالَ

And said

waqāla

ٱلْـَٔاخَرُ

the other

l-ākharu

إِنِّىٓ

Indeed, I

innī

أَرَىٰنِىٓ

[I] see myself

arānī

أَحْمِلُ

[I am] carrying

aḥmilu

فَوْقَ

over

fawqa

رَأْسِى

my head

rasī

خُبْزًۭا

bread

khub'zan

تَأْكُلُ

(were) eating

takulu

ٱلطَّيْرُ

the birds

l-ṭayru

مِنْهُ ۖ

from it

min'hu

نَبِّئْنَا

Inform us

nabbi'nā

بِتَأْوِيلِهِۦٓ ۖ

of its interpretation

bitawīlihi

إِنَّا

indeed, we

innā

نَرَىٰكَ

[we] see you

narāka

مِنَ

of

mina

ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ

the good-doers

l-muḥ'sinīna

٣٦

And there entered the prison with him two young men. One of them said, "Indeed, I have seen myself [in a dream] pressing [grapes for] wine." The other said, "Indeed, I have seen myself carrying upon my head [some] bread, from which the birds were eating. Inform us of its interpretation; indeed, we see you to be of those who do good."

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

لَا

Not

يَأْتِيكُمَا

(will) come to both of you

yatīkumā

طَعَامٌۭ

food

ṭaʿāmun

تُرْزَقَانِهِۦٓ

you are provided with

tur'zaqānihi

إِلَّا

but

illā

نَبَّأْتُكُمَا

I will inform both of you

nabbatukumā

بِتَأْوِيلِهِۦ

of its interpretation

bitawīlihi

قَبْلَ

before

qabla

أَن

[that]

an

يَأْتِيَكُمَا ۚ

[it] comes to both of you

yatiyakumā

ذَٰلِكُمَا

That

dhālikumā

مِمَّا

(is) of what

mimmā

عَلَّمَنِى

has taught me

ʿallamanī

رَبِّىٓ ۚ

my Lord

rabbī

إِنِّى

Indeed, I

innī

تَرَكْتُ

[I] abandon

taraktu

مِلَّةَ

(the) religion

millata

قَوْمٍۢ

(of) a people

qawmin

لَّا

not

يُؤْمِنُونَ

they believe

yu'minūna

بِٱللَّهِ

in Allah

bil-lahi

وَهُم

and they

wahum

بِٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ

in the Hereafter

bil-ākhirati

هُمْ

[they]

hum

كَـٰفِرُونَ

(are) disbelievers

kāfirūna

٣٧

He said, "You will not receive food that is provided to you except that I will inform you of its interpretation before it comes to you. That is from what my Lord has taught me. Indeed, I have left the religion of a people who do not believe in Allāh, and they, in the Hereafter, are disbelievers.

— Saheeh International
