وَرَٰوَدَتْهُ And sought to seduce him warāwadathu she who allatī he (was) huwa in fī her house baytihā from ʿan his self nafsihi And she closed waghallaqati the doors l-abwāba and she said waqālat Come on hayta you laka He said qāla I seek refuge in Allah maʿādha I seek refuge in Allah l-lahi Indeed, he innahu (is) my lord rabbī (who has) made good aḥsana my stay mathwāya Indeed innahu not lā will succeed yuf'liḥu the wrongdoers l-ẓālimūna
And she, in whose house he was, sought to seduce him. She closed the doors and said, "Come, you." He said, "[I seek] the refuge of Allāh. Indeed, he1 is my master, who has made good my residence. Indeed, wrongdoers will not succeed."
وَلَقَدْ And certainly walaqad she did desire hammat him bihi and he would have desired wahamma her bihā if not lawlā that an he saw raā the proof bur'hāna (of) his Lord rabbihi Thus kadhālika that We might avert linaṣrifa from him ʿanhu the evil l-sūa and the immorality wal-faḥshāa Indeed, he innahu (was) of min Our slaves ʿibādinā the sincere l-mukh'laṣīna
And she certainly determined [to seduce] him, and he would have inclined to her had he not seen the proof [i.e., sign] of his Lord. And thus [it was] that We should avert from him evil and immorality. Indeed, he was of Our chosen servants.
وَٱسْتَبَقَا And they both raced wa-is'tabaqā (to) the door l-bāba and she tore waqaddat his shirt qamīṣahu from min the back duburin and they both found wa-alfayā her husband sayyidahā at ladā the door l-bābi She said qālat What mā (is) the recompense jazāu (of one) who man intended arāda for your wife bi-ahlika evil sūan except illā that an he be imprisoned yus'jana or aw a punishment ʿadhābun painful alīmun
And they both raced to the door, and she tore his shirt from the back, and they found her husband at the door. She said, "What is the recompense of one who intended evil for your wife but that he be imprisoned or a painful punishment?"
قَالَ He said qāla She hiya sought to seduce me rāwadatnī about ʿan myself nafsī And testified washahida a witness shāhidun of min her family ahlihā If in [is] kāna his shirt qamīṣuhu (is) torn qudda from min the front qubulin then she has spoken the truth faṣadaqat and he wahuwa (is) of mina the liars l-kādhibīna
[Joseph] said, "It was she who sought to seduce me." And a witness from her family testified, "If his shirt is torn from the front, then she has told the truth, and he is of the liars.
وَإِن But if wa-in [is] kāna his shirt qamīṣuhu (is) torn qudda from min (the) back duburin then she has lied fakadhabat and he wahuwa (is) of mina the truthful l-ṣādiqīna
But if his shirt is torn from the back, then she has lied, and he is of the truthful."
فَلَمَّا So when falammā he saw raā his shirt qamīṣahu torn qudda from min (the) back duburin he said qāla Indeed, it innahu (is) of min your plot kaydikunna Indeed inna your plot kaydakunna (is) great ʿaẓīmun
So when he [i.e., her husband] saw his shirt torn from the back, he said, "Indeed, it is of your [i.e., women's] plan. Indeed, your plan is great [i.e., vehement].
يُوسُفُ Yusuf yūsufu turn away aʿriḍ from ʿan this hādhā And ask forgiveness wa-is'taghfirī for your sin lidhanbiki Indeed, you innaki are kunti of mina the sinful l-khāṭiīna
Joseph, ignore this.1 And, [my wife], ask forgiveness for your sin. Indeed, you were of the sinful."
۞ وَقَالَ And said waqāla women nis'watun in fī the city l-madīnati The wife of im'ra-atu Aziz l-ʿazīzi (is) seeking to seduce turāwidu her slave boy fatāhā about ʿan himself nafsihi indeed qad he has impassioned her shaghafahā (with) love ḥubban Indeed, we innā [we] surely see her lanarāhā in fī an error ḍalālin clear mubīnin
And women in the city said, "The wife of al-ʿAzeez is seeking to seduce her slave boy; he has impassioned her with love. Indeed, we see her [to be] in clear error."
