فَلَوْلَا So why not falawlā was kānat any town qaryatun that believed āmanat and benefited it fanafaʿahā its faith īmānuhā except illā the people qawma (of) Yunus yūnusa When lammā they believed āmanū We removed kashafnā from them ʿanhum (the) punishment ʿadhāba (of) the disgrace l-khiz'yi in fī the life l-ḥayati of the world l-dun'yā and We granted them enjoyment wamattaʿnāhum for ilā a time ḥīnin
Then has there not been a [single] city that believed so its faith benefited it except the people of Jonah? When they believed, We removed from them the punishment of disgrace in worldly life and gave them enjoyment [i.e., provision] for a time.
وَلَوْ And if walaw (had) willed shāa your Lord rabbuka surely, (would) have believed laāmana who man (are) in fī the earth l-arḍi all of them kulluhum together jamīʿan Then, will you afa-anta compel tuk'rihu the mankind l-nāsa until ḥattā they become yakūnū believers mu'minīna
And had your Lord willed, those on earth would have believed - all of them entirely. Then, [O Muḥammad], would you compel the people in order that they become believers?
وَمَا And not wamā is kāna for a soul linafsin to an believe tu'mina except illā by (the) permission bi-idh'ni (of) Allah l-lahi And He will place wayajʿalu the wrath l-rij'sa on ʿalā those who alladhīna (do) not lā use reason yaʿqilūna
And it is not for a soul [i.e., anyone] to believe except by permission of Allāh, and He will place defilement1 upon those who will not use reason.
قُلِ Say quli See unẓurū what mādhā (is) in fī the heavens l-samāwāti and the earth wal-arḍi But not wamā will avail tugh'nī the Signs l-āyātu and the warners wal-nudhuru to ʿan a people qawmin (who do) not lā believe yu'minūna
Say, "Observe what is in the heavens and the earth." But of no avail will be signs or warners to a people who do not believe.
فَهَلْ Then do fahal they wait yantaẓirūna except illā like mith'la the days ayyāmi (of) those who alladhīna passed away khalaw before them min before them qablihim Say qul Then wait fa-intaẓirū indeed, I (am) innī with you maʿakum among mina the ones who wait l-muntaẓirīna
So do they wait except for like [what occurred in] the days of those who passed on before them? Say, "Then wait; indeed, I am with you among those who wait."
ثُمَّ Then thumma We will save nunajjī Our Messengers rusulanā and those who wa-alladhīna believe āmanū Thus kadhālika (it is) an obligation ḥaqqan upon Us ʿalaynā (that) We save nunji the believers l-mu'minīna
Then We will save Our messengers and those who have believed. Thus, it is an obligation upon Us that We save the believers.1
قُلْ Say qul O mankind yāayyuhā O mankind l-nāsu If in you are kuntum in fī doubt shakkin of min my religion dīnī then not falā I worship aʿbudu those whom alladhīna you worship taʿbudūna besides Allah min besides Allah dūni besides Allah l-lahi but walākin I worship aʿbudu Allah l-laha the One Who alladhī causes you to die yatawaffākum And I am commanded wa-umir'tu that an I be akūna of mina the believers l-mu'minīna
Say, [O Muḥammad], "O people, if you are in doubt as to my religion - then I do not worship those which you worship besides Allāh; but I worship Allāh, who causes your death. And I have been commanded to be of the believers
وَأَنْ And that wa-an Direct aqim your face wajhaka to the religion lilddīni upright ḥanīfan and (do) not walā be takūnanna of mina the polytheists l-mush'rikīna
And [commanded], 'Direct your face [i.e., self] toward the religion, inclining to truth, and never be of those who associate others with Allāh;
وَلَا And (do) not walā invoke tadʿu besides Allah min besides Allah dūni besides Allah l-lahi what mā (will) not lā benefit you yanfaʿuka and not walā harm you yaḍurruka But if fa-in you did so faʿalta indeed, you fa-innaka then (will be) idhan of mina the wrongdoers l-ẓālimīna
And do not invoke1 besides Allāh that which neither benefits you nor harms you, for if you did, then indeed you would be of the wrongdoers.'"2
