وَجَـٰوَزْنَا And We led across wajāwaznā (the) Children bibanī (of) Israel is'rāīla the sea l-baḥra Then they came fa-ataw upon ʿalā a people qawmin devoted yaʿkufūna to ʿalā idols aṣnāmin of theirs lahum They said qālū O Musa yāmūsā Make ij'ʿal for us lanā a god ilāhan like what kamā they have lahum gods ālihatun He said qāla Indeed, you innakum (are) a people qawmun ignorant tajhalūna
And We took the Children of Israel across the sea; then they came upon a people intent in devotion to [some] idols of theirs. They [the Children of Israel] said, "O Moses, make for us a god just as they have gods." He said, "Indeed, you are a people behaving ignorantly.
إِنَّ Indeed inna these hāulāi destroyed mutabbarun (is) what mā they hum (are) in it fīhi and vain wabāṭilun (is) what mā they used to kānū do yaʿmalūna
Indeed, those [worshippers] - destroyed is that in which they are [engaged], and worthless is whatever they were doing."
قَالَ He said qāla Should other than aghayra Allah l-lahi I seek for you abghīkum a god ilāhan while He wahuwa has preferred you faḍḍalakum over ʿalā the worlds l-ʿālamīna
He said, "Is it other than Allāh I should desire for you as a god1 while He has preferred you over the worlds?"
وَإِذْ And when wa-idh We saved you anjaynākum from min (the) people āli (of) Firaun fir'ʿawna who were afflicting you yasūmūnakum (with) worst sūa (of) torment l-ʿadhābi they were killing yuqattilūna your sons abnāakum and letting live wayastaḥyūna your women nisāakum And in wafī that dhālikum (was) a trial balāon from min your Lord rabbikum great ʿaẓīmun
And [recall, O Children of Israel], when We saved you from the people of Pharaoh, [who were] afflicting you with the worst torment - killing your sons and keeping your women alive. And in that was a great trial from your Lord.
۞ وَوَٰعَدْنَا And We appointed wawāʿadnā (for) Musa mūsā thirty thalāthīna nights laylatan and We completed them wa-atmamnāhā with ten (more) biʿashrin so was completed fatamma (the) set term mīqātu (of) his Lord rabbihi (of) forty arbaʿīna night(s) laylatan And said waqāla Musa mūsā to his brother li-akhīhi Harun hārūna Take my place ukh'luf'nī in fī my people qawmī and do right wa-aṣliḥ and (do) not walā follow tattabiʿ (the) way sabīla (of) the corrupters l-muf'sidīna
And We made an appointment with Moses for thirty nights and perfected them by [the addition of] ten; so the term of his Lord was completed as forty nights. And Moses said to his brother Aaron, "Take my place among my people, do right [by them],1 and do not follow the way of the corrupters."
وَلَمَّا And when walammā came jāa Musa mūsā to Our appointed place limīqātinā and spoke to him wakallamahu his Lord rabbuhu he said qāla O my Lord rabbi Show me arinī (that) I may look anẓur at You ilayka He said qāla Never lan you (can) see Me tarānī but walākini look unẓur at ilā the mountain l-jabali [then] if fa-ini it remains is'taqarra in its place makānahu then fasawfa you (will) see Me tarānī But when falammā revealed (His) Glory tajallā his Lord rabbuhu to the mountain lil'jabali He made it jaʿalahu crumbled to dust dakkan and fell down wakharra Musa mūsā unconscious ṣaʿiqan And when falammā he recovered afāqa he said qāla Glory be to You sub'ḥānaka I turn (in repentance) tub'tu to you ilayka and I am wa-anā (the) first awwalu (of) the believers l-mu'minīna
And when Moses arrived at Our appointed time and his Lord spoke to him, he said, "My Lord, show me [Yourself] that I may look at You." [Allāh] said, "You will not see Me,1 but look at the mountain; if it should remain in place, then you will see Me." But when his Lord appeared to the mountain, He rendered it level,2 and Moses fell unconscious. And when he awoke, he said, "Exalted are You! I have repented to You, and I am the first [among my people] of the believers."3
