وَلَوْ And if walaw [that] anna people ahla (of) the cities l-qurā (had) believed āmanū and feared Allah wa-ittaqaw surely We (would have) opened lafataḥnā upon them ʿalayhim blessings barakātin from mina the heaven l-samāi and the earth wal-arḍi but walākin they denied kadhabū So We seized them fa-akhadhnāhum for what bimā they used to kānū earn yaksibūna
And if only the people of the cities had believed and feared Allāh, We would have opened [i.e., bestowed] upon them blessings from the heaven and the earth; but they denied [the messengers], so We seized them for what they were earning.1
أَفَأَمِنَ Then did feel secure afa-amina (the) people ahlu (of) the cities l-qurā that an comes to them yatiyahum Our punishment basunā (at) night bayātan while they wahum (were) asleep nāimūna
Then, did the people of the cities feel secure from Our punishment coming to them at night while they were asleep?
أَوَأَمِنَ Or felt secure awa-amina (the) people ahlu (of) the cities l-qurā that an comes to them yatiyahum Our punishment basunā (in) daylight ḍuḥan while they wahum (were) playing yalʿabūna
Or did the people of the cities feel secure from Our punishment coming to them in the morning while they were at play?1
أَفَأَمِنُوا۟ Then did they feel secure afa-aminū (from the) plan makra (of) Allah l-lahi But not falā feel secure yamanu (from the) plan makra (of) Allah l-lahi except illā the people l-qawmu (who are) the losers l-khāsirūna
Then, did they feel secure from the plan of Allāh? But no one feels secure from the plan of Allāh except the losing people.
أَوَلَمْ Would it not awalam guide yahdi [for] those who lilladhīna inherit yarithūna the land l-arḍa from min after baʿdi its people ahlihā that an if law We willed nashāu We (could) afflict them aṣabnāhum for their sins bidhunūbihim and We put a seal wanaṭbaʿu over ʿalā their hearts qulūbihim so they fahum (do) not lā hear yasmaʿūna
Has it not become clear to those who inherited the earth after its [previous] people that if We willed, We could afflict them for their sins? But We seal over their hearts so they do not hear.1
تِلْكَ These til'ka (were) the cities l-qurā We relate naquṣṣu to you ʿalayka of min their news anbāihā And certainly walaqad came to them jāathum their Messengers rusuluhum with clear proofs bil-bayināti but not famā they were kānū to believe liyu'minū in what bimā they (had) denied kadhabū from min before qablu Thus kadhālika (has been) put a seal yaṭbaʿu (by) Allah l-lahu on ʿalā (the) hearts qulūbi (of) the disbelievers l-kāfirīna
Those cities - We relate to you, [O Muḥammad], some of their news. And certainly did their messengers come to them with clear proofs, but they were not to believe in that which they had denied before.1 Thus does Allāh seal over the hearts of the disbelievers.
وَمَا And not wamā We found wajadnā for most of them li-aktharihim any min covenant ʿahdin But wa-in We found wajadnā most of them aktharahum certainly, defiantly disobedient lafāsiqīna
And We did not find for most of them any covenant;1 but indeed, We found most of them defiantly disobedient.
ثُمَّ Then thumma We sent baʿathnā from min after them baʿdihim Musa mūsā with Our Signs biāyātinā to ilā Firaun fir'ʿawna and his chiefs wamala-ihi But they were unjust faẓalamū to them bihā So see fa-unẓur how kayfa was kāna (the) end ʿāqibatu (of) the corrupters l-muf'sidīna
Then We sent after them Moses with Our signs to Pharaoh and his establishment, but they were unjust toward them.1 So see how was the end of the corrupters.
وَقَالَ And said waqāla Musa mūsā O Firaun yāfir'ʿawnu Indeed, I am innī a Messenger rasūlun from min (the) Lord rabbi (of) the worlds l-ʿālamīna
And Moses said, "O Pharaoh, I am a messenger from the Lord of the worlds
