۞ قَالَ Said qāla the chiefs l-mala-u (of) those who alladhīna were arrogant is'takbarū among min his people qawmihi We will surely drive you out lanukh'rijannaka O Shuaib yāshuʿaybu And those who wa-alladhīna (have) believed āmanū with you maʿaka from min our city qaryatinā or aw you must return lataʿūdunna to fī our religion millatinā He said qāla Even if awalaw we are kunnā (the) ones who hate (it) kārihīna
Said the eminent ones who were arrogant among his people, "We will surely evict you, O Shuʿayb, and those who have believed with you from our city, or you must return to our religion." He said, "Even if we were unwilling?
قَدِ Verily qadi we would have fabricated if'taraynā against ʿalā Allah l-lahi a lie kadhiban if in we returned ʿud'nā in fī your religion millatikum after baʿda [when] idh saved us najjānā Allah l-lahu from it min'hā And not wamā it is yakūnu for us lanā that an we return naʿūda in it fīhā except illā that an wills yashāa Allah l-lahu our Lord rabbunā Encompasses wasiʿa (by) Our Lord rabbunā every kulla thing shayin (in) knowledge ʿil'man Upon ʿalā Allah l-lahi we put our trust tawakkalnā Our Lord rabbanā Decide if'taḥ between us baynanā and between wabayna our people qawminā in truth bil-ḥaqi and You wa-anta (are the) Best khayru (of) those who Decide l-fātiḥīna
We would have invented against Allāh a lie if we returned to your religion after Allāh had saved us from it. And it is not for us to return to it except that Allāh, our Lord, should will. Our Lord has encompassed all things in knowledge. Upon Allāh we have relied. Our Lord, decide between us and our people in truth, and You are the best of those who give decision."
وَقَالَ And said waqāla the chiefs l-mala-u (of) those who alladhīna disbelieved kafarū among min his people qawmihi If la-ini you follow ittabaʿtum Shuaib shuʿayban indeed, you innakum then idhan (will be) certainly losers lakhāsirūna
Said the eminent ones who disbelieved among his people, "If you should follow Shuʿayb, indeed, you would then be losers."
فَأَخَذَتْهُمُ Then seized them fa-akhadhathumu the earthquake l-rajfatu then they became fa-aṣbaḥū in fī their home(s) dārihim fallen prone jāthimīna
So the earthquake seized them, and they became within their home [corpses] fallen prone.
ٱلَّذِينَ Those who alladhīna denied kadhabū Shuaib shuʿayban (became) as if ka-an not lam they (had) lived yaghnaw therein fīhā Those who alladhīna denied kadhabū Shuaib shuʿayban they were kānū them humu the losers l-khāsirīna
Those who denied Shuʿayb - it was as though they had never resided there. Those who denied Shuʿayb - it was they who were the losers.
فَتَوَلَّىٰ So he turned away fatawallā from them ʿanhum and said waqāla O my people yāqawmi Verily laqad I (have) conveyed to you ablaghtukum (the) Messages risālāti (of) my Lord rabbī and advised wanaṣaḥtu [to] you lakum So how could fakayfa I grieve āsā for ʿalā a people qawmin (who are) disbelievers kāfirīna
And he [i.e., Shuʿayb] turned away from them and said, "O my people, I had certainly conveyed to you the messages of my Lord and advised you, so how could I grieve for a disbelieving people?"
وَمَآ And not wamā We sent arsalnā in fī a city qaryatin any min Prophet nabiyyin except illā We seized akhadhnā its people ahlahā with adversity bil-basāi and hardship wal-ḍarāi so that they may laʿallahum (become) humble yaḍḍarraʿūna
And We sent to no city a prophet [who was denied] except that We seized its people with poverty and hardship that they might humble themselves [to Allāh].
ثُمَّ Then thumma We changed baddalnā (in) place makāna (of) the bad l-sayi-ati the good l-ḥasanata until ḥattā they increased ʿafaw and said waqālū Verily qad (had) touched massa our forefathers ābāanā the adversity l-ḍarāu and the ease wal-sarāu So We seized them fa-akhadhnāhum suddenly baghtatan while they wahum (did) not lā perceive yashʿurūna
Then We exchanged in place of the bad [condition], good, until they increased [and prospered] and said, "Our fathers [also] were touched with hardship and ease."1 So We seized them suddenly while they did not perceive.2
