حَقِيقٌ Obligated ḥaqīqun on ʿalā that an not lā I say aqūla about ʿalā Allah l-lahi except illā the truth l-ḥaqa Verily qad I (have) come to you ji'tukum with a clear Sign bibayyinatin from min your Lord rabbikum so send fa-arsil with me maʿiya (the) Children banī (of) Israel is'rāīla
[Who is] obligated not to say about Allāh except the truth. I have come to you with clear evidence from your Lord, so send with me the Children of Israel."1
قَالَ He said qāla If in you have kunta come ji'ta with a Sign biāyatin then bring fati it bihā if in you are kunta of mina the truthful l-ṣādiqīna
[Pharaoh] said, "If you have come with a sign, then bring it forth, if you should be of the truthful."
فَأَلْقَىٰ So he threw fa-alqā his staff ʿaṣāhu and suddenly fa-idhā it hiya (was) a serpent thuʿ'bānun manifest mubīnun
So he [i.e., Moses] threw his staff, and suddenly it was a serpent, manifest.1
وَنَزَعَ And he drew out wanazaʿa his hand yadahu and suddenly fa-idhā it hiya (was) white bayḍāu for the observers lilnnāẓirīna
And he drew out his hand; thereupon it was white [with radiance] for the observers.
قَالَ Said qāla the chiefs l-mala-u of min (the) people qawmi (of) Firaun fir'ʿawna Indeed inna this hādhā (is) surely a magician lasāḥirun learned ʿalīmun
Said the eminent among the people of Pharaoh, "Indeed, this is a learned magician
يُرِيدُ He wants yurīdu to an drive you out yukh'rijakum from min your land arḍikum so what famādhā (do) you instruct tamurūna
Who wants to expel you from your land [through magic], so what do you instruct?"
قَالُوٓا۟ They said qālū Postpone him arjih and his brother wa-akhāhu and send wa-arsil in fī the cities l-madāini gatherers ḥāshirīna
They said,1 "Postpone [the matter of] him and his brother and send among the cities gatherers
يَأْتُوكَ They (will) bring to you yatūka [with] every bikulli magician sāḥirin learned ʿalīmin
Who will bring you every learned magician."
وَجَآءَ So came wajāa the magicians l-saḥaratu (to) Firaun fir'ʿawna They said qālū Indeed inna for us lanā surely (will be) a reward la-ajran if in we are kunnā [we] naḥnu the victors l-ghālibīna
And the magicians came to Pharaoh. They said, "Indeed for us is a reward if we are the predominant."
قَالَ He said qāla Yes naʿam and indeed you wa-innakum surely (will be) of lamina the ones who are near l-muqarabīna
He said, "Yes, and, [moreover], you will be among those made near [to me]."
قَالُوا۟ They said qālū O Musa yāmūsā Whether immā [that] an you throw tul'qiya or Whether wa-immā [that] an we will be nakūna [we] naḥnu the ones to throw l-mul'qīna
They said, "O Moses, either you throw [your staff], or we will be the ones to throw [first]."
قَالَ He said qāla Throw alqū Then when falammā they threw alqaw they bewitched saḥarū (the) eyes aʿyuna (of) the people l-nāsi and terrified them wa-is'tarhabūhum and came (up) wajāū with a magic bisiḥ'rin great ʿaẓīmin
He said, "Throw," and when they threw, they bewitched the eyes of the people and struck terror into them, and they presented a great [feat of] magic.1
۞ وَأَوْحَيْنَآ And We inspired wa-awḥaynā to ilā Musa mūsā that an Throw alqi your staff ʿaṣāka and suddenly fa-idhā it hiya swallow(ed) talqafu what mā they (were) falsifying yafikūna
And We inspired to Moses, "Throw your staff," and at once it devoured what they were falsifying.
فَوَقَعَ So was established fawaqaʿa the truth l-ḥaqu and became futile wabaṭala what mā they used to kānū do yaʿmalūna
So the truth was established, and abolished was what they were doing.
فَغُلِبُوا۟ So they were defeated faghulibū there hunālika and returned wa-inqalabū humiliated ṣāghirīna
And they [i.e., Pharaoh and his people] were overcome right there and became debased.
وَأُلْقِىَ And fell down wa-ul'qiya the magicians l-saḥaratu prostrate sājidīna
And the magicians fell down in prostration [to Allāh].
