قَالَا Both of them said qālā Our Lord rabbanā we have wronged ẓalamnā ourselves anfusanā and if wa-in not lam You forgive taghfir [for] us lanā and have mercy (on) us watarḥamnā surely, we will be lanakūnanna among mina the losers l-khāsirīna
They said, "Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves, and if You do not forgive us and have mercy upon us, we will surely be among the losers."
قَالَ (Allah) said qāla Get down ih'biṭū some of you baʿḍukum to some others libaʿḍin (as) enemy ʿaduwwun And for you walakum in fī the earth l-arḍi (is) a dwelling place mus'taqarrun and livelihood wamatāʿun for ilā a time ḥīnin
[Allāh] said, "Descend, being to one another enemies. And for you on the earth is a place of settlement and enjoyment [i.e., provision] for a time."
قَالَ He said qāla In it fīhā you will live taḥyawna and in it wafīhā you will die tamūtūna and from it wamin'hā you will be brought forth tukh'rajūna
He said, "Therein you will live, and therein you will die, and from it you will be brought forth."
يَـٰبَنِىٓ O Children yābanī (of) Adam ādama Verily qad We have sent down anzalnā to you ʿalaykum clothing libāsan it covers yuwārī your shame sawātikum and (as) an adornment warīshan But the clothing walibāsu (of) [the] righteousness l-taqwā that dhālika (is) best khayrun That dhālika (is) from min (the) Signs āyāti (of) Allah l-lahi so that they may laʿallahum remember yadhakkarūna
O children of Adam, We have bestowed upon you clothing to conceal your private parts and as adornment. But the clothing of righteousness - that is best. That is from the signs of Allāh that perhaps they will remember.
يَـٰبَنِىٓ O Children yābanī (of) Adam ādama (Let) not lā tempt you yaftinannakumu [the] Shaitaan l-shayṭānu as kamā he drove out akhraja your parents abawaykum from mina Paradise l-janati stripping yanziʿu from both of them ʿanhumā their clothing libāsahumā to show both of them liyuriyahumā their shame sawātihimā Indeed, he innahu sees you yarākum he huwa and his tribe waqabīluhu from min where ḥaythu not lā you see them tarawnahum Indeed innā We have made jaʿalnā the devils l-shayāṭīna friends awliyāa of those who lilladhīna (do) not lā believe yu'minūna
O children of Adam, let not Satan tempt you as he removed your parents from Paradise, stripping them of their clothing1 to show them their private parts. Indeed, he sees you, he and his tribe, from where you do not see them. Indeed, We have made the devils allies to those who do not believe.
وَإِذَا And when wa-idhā they do faʿalū immorality fāḥishatan they say qālū We found wajadnā on it ʿalayhā our forefathers ābāanā and Allah wal-lahu (has) ordered us amaranā of it bihā Say qul Indeed inna Allah l-laha (does) not lā order yamuru immorality bil-faḥshāi Do you say ataqūlūna about ʿalā Allah l-lahi what mā not lā you know taʿlamūna
And when they commit an immorality, they say, "We found our fathers doing it, and Allāh has ordered us to do it." Say, "Indeed, Allāh does not order immorality. Do you say about Allāh that which you do not know?"
قُلْ Say qul (Has been) ordered amara (by) my Lord rabbī justice bil-qis'ṭi and set wa-aqīmū your faces wujūhakum at ʿinda every kulli masjid masjidin and invoke Him wa-id'ʿūhu (being) sincere mukh'liṣīna to Him lahu (in) the religion l-dīna As kamā He originated you bada-akum (so) will you return taʿūdūna
Say, [O Muḥammad], "My Lord has ordered justice and that you direct yourselves [to the Qiblah] at every place [or time] of prostration, and invoke Him, sincere to Him in religion." Just as He originated you, you will return [to life] -
فَرِيقًا A group farīqan He guided hadā and a group wafarīqan deserved ḥaqqa [on] they ʿalayhimu the astraying l-ḍalālatu Indeed, they innahumu take ittakhadhū the devils l-shayāṭīna (as) allies awliyāa from min besides dūni Allah l-lahi while they think wayaḥsabūna that they annahum (are the) guided-ones muh'tadūna
A group [of you] He guided, and a group deserved [to be in] error. Indeed, they [i.e., the latter] had taken the devils as allies instead of Allāh while they thought that they were guided.
