قُلْ Say qul O People yāahla (of) the Book l-kitābi (Do) not lā exceed taghlū in fī your religion dīnikum other than ghayra the truth l-ḥaqi and (do) not walā follow tattabiʿū (vain) desires ahwāa (of) a people qawmin certainly qad who went astray ḍallū from min before qablu and they misled wa-aḍallū many kathīran and they have strayed waḍallū from ʿan (the) right sawāi [the] way l-sabīli
Say, "O People of the Scripture, do not exceed limits in your religion beyond the truth and do not follow the inclinations of a people who had gone astray before and misled many and have strayed from the soundness of the way."
لُعِنَ Were cursed luʿina those who alladhīna disbelieved kafarū from min (the) Children banī (of) Israel is'rāīla by ʿalā (the) tongue lisāni (of) Dawood dāwūda and Isa waʿīsā son ib'ni (of) Maryam maryama that (was) dhālika because bimā they disobeyed ʿaṣaw and they were wakānū transgressing yaʿtadūna
Cursed were those who disbelieved among the Children of Israel by the tongue of David and of Jesus, the son of Mary. That was because they disobeyed and [habitually] transgressed.
كَانُوا۟ They had been kānū not lā forbidding each other yatanāhawna from ʿan wrongdoing munkarin they did [it] faʿalūhu Surely, evil labi'sa (was) what mā they were kānū doing yafʿalūna
They used not to prevent one another from wrongdoing that they did. How wretched was that which they were doing.
تَرَىٰ You see tarā many kathīran of them min'hum taking as allies yatawallawna those who alladhīna disbelieved kafarū Surely evil labi'sa (is) what mā sent forth qaddamat for them lahum their souls anfusuhum that an became angry sakhiṭa Allah l-lahu with them ʿalayhim and in wafī the punishment l-ʿadhābi they hum (will) abide forever khālidūna
You see many of them becoming allies of those who disbelieved [i.e., the polytheists]. How wretched is that which they have put forth for themselves in that Allāh has become angry with them, and in the punishment they will abide eternally.
وَلَوْ And if walaw they had kānū believed yu'minūna in Allah bil-lahi and the Prophet wal-nabiyi and what wamā has been revealed unzila to him ilayhi not mā they (would have) taken them ittakhadhūhum (as) allies awliyāa [and] but walākinna many kathīran of them min'hum (are) defiantly disobedient fāsiqūna
And if they had believed in Allāh and the Prophet and in what was revealed to him, they would not have taken them as allies; but many of them are defiantly disobedient.
۞ لَتَجِدَنَّ Surely you will find latajidanna strongest ashadda (of) the people l-nāsi (in) enmity ʿadāwatan to those who lilladhīna believe āmanū the Jews l-yahūda and those who wa-alladhīna (are) polytheists ashrakū and surely you will find walatajidanna nearest of them aqrabahum (in) affection mawaddatan to those who lilladhīna believe āmanū those who alladhīna say qālū We innā (are) Christians naṣārā That (is) dhālika because bi-anna among them min'hum (are) priests qissīsīna and monks waruh'bānan and that they wa-annahum (are) not lā arrogant yastakbirūna
You will surely find the most intense of the people in animosity toward the believers [to be] the Jews and those who associate others with Allāh; and you will find the nearest of them in affection to the believers those who say, "We are Christians." That is because among them are priests and monks and because they are not arrogant.
