مِنْ From min time ajli that dhālika We ordained katabnā on ʿalā (the) Children banī (of) Israel is'rāīla that he annahu who man kills qatala a soul nafsan other than bighayri (for) a soul nafsin or aw (for) spreading corruption fasādin in fī the earth l-arḍi then (it) is as if faka-annamā he has killed qatala mankind l-nāsa all jamīʿan and whoever waman saves it aḥyāhā then (it) is as if faka-annamā he has saved aḥyā mankind l-nāsa all jamīʿan And surely walaqad came to them jāathum Our Messengers rusulunā with clear Signs bil-bayināti yet thumma indeed inna many kathīran of them min'hum after baʿda that dhālika in fī the earth l-arḍi (are) surely those who commit excesses lamus'rifūna
Because of that, We decreed upon the Children of Israel that whoever kills a soul unless for a soul1 or for corruption [done] in the land2 - it is as if he had slain mankind entirely. And whoever saves one3 - it is as if he had saved mankind entirely. And Our messengers had certainly come to them with clear proofs. Then indeed many of them, [even] after that, throughout the land, were transgressors.4
إِنَّمَا Only innamā (the) recompense jazāu (for) those who alladhīna wage war yuḥāribūna (against) Allah l-laha and His Messenger warasūlahu and strive wayasʿawna in fī the earth l-arḍi spreading corruption fasādan (is) that an they be killed yuqattalū or aw they be crucified yuṣallabū or aw be cut off tuqaṭṭaʿa their hands aydīhim and their feet wa-arjuluhum of min opposite sides khilāfin or aw they be exiled yunfaw from mina the land l-arḍi That dhālika (is) for them lahum disgrace khiz'yun in fī the world l-dun'yā and for them walahum in fī the Hereafter l-ākhirati (is) a punishment ʿadhābun great ʿaẓīmun
Indeed, the penalty1 for those who wage war2 against Allāh and His Messenger and strive upon earth [to cause] corruption is none but that they be killed or crucified or that their hands and feet be cut off from opposite sides or that they be exiled from the land. That is for them a disgrace in this world; and for them in the Hereafter is a great punishment,
إِلَّا Except illā those who alladhīna repent tābū from min before qabli that an you overpower taqdirū [over] them ʿalayhim then know fa-iʿ'lamū that anna Allah l-laha (is) Oft-Forgiving ghafūrun Most Merciful raḥīmun
Except for those who return [repenting] before you overcome [i.e., apprehend] them. And know that Allāh is Forgiving and Merciful.
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا O you yāayyuhā who alladhīna believe āmanū Fear ittaqū Allah l-laha and seek wa-ib'taghū towards Him ilayhi the means l-wasīlata and strive hard wajāhidū in fī His way sabīlihi so that you may laʿallakum succeed tuf'liḥūna
O you who have believed, fear Allāh and seek the means [of nearness] to Him and strive in His cause that you may succeed.
إِنَّ Indeed inna those who alladhīna disbelieve kafarū if law that anna for them lahum (is) what mā (is) in fī the earth l-arḍi all jamīʿan and the like of it wamith'lahu with it maʿahu to ransom themselves liyaftadū with it bihi from min (the) punishment ʿadhābi (of the) Day yawmi (of) the Resurrection l-qiyāmati not mā will be accepted tuqubbila from them min'hum and for them walahum (is) a punishment ʿadhābun painful alīmun
Indeed, those who disbelieve - if they should have all that is in the earth and the like of it with it by which to ransom themselves from the punishment of the Day of Resurrection, it will not be accepted from them, and for them is a painful punishment.
