قَالُوا۟

They said

qālū

يَـٰمُوسَىٰٓ

O Musa

yāmūsā

إِنَّا

Indeed, we

innā

لَن

never

lan

نَّدْخُلَهَآ

will enter it

nadkhulahā

أَبَدًۭا

ever

abadan

مَّا

for

دَامُوا۟

as long as they are

dāmū

فِيهَا ۖ

in it

fīhā

فَٱذْهَبْ

So go

fa-idh'hab

أَنتَ

you

anta

وَرَبُّكَ

and your Lord

warabbuka

فَقَـٰتِلَآ

and you both fight

faqātilā

إِنَّا

Indeed, we

innā

هَـٰهُنَا

are [here]

hāhunā

قَـٰعِدُونَ

sitting

qāʿidūna

٢٤

They said, "O Moses, indeed we will not enter it, ever, as long as they are within it; so go, you and your Lord, and fight. Indeed, we are remaining right here."

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

رَبِّ

O my Lord

rabbi

إِنِّى

Indeed, I

innī

لَآ

(do) not

أَمْلِكُ

(have) power

amliku

إِلَّا

except

illā

نَفْسِى

(over) myself

nafsī

وَأَخِى ۖ

and my brother

wa-akhī

فَٱفْرُقْ

so (make a) separation

fa-uf'ruq

بَيْنَنَا

between us

baynanā

وَبَيْنَ

and between

wabayna

ٱلْقَوْمِ

the people

l-qawmi

ٱلْفَـٰسِقِينَ

(the) defiantly disobedient

l-fāsiqīna

٢٥

[Moses] said, "My Lord, indeed I do not possess [i.e., control] except myself and my brother, so part us1 from the defiantly disobedient people."

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

(Allah) said

qāla

فَإِنَّهَا

Then indeed it

fa-innahā

مُحَرَّمَةٌ

(will be) forbidden

muḥarramatun

عَلَيْهِمْ ۛ

to them

ʿalayhim

أَرْبَعِينَ

(for) forty

arbaʿīna

سَنَةًۭ ۛ

years

sanatan

يَتِيهُونَ

they will wander

yatīhūna

فِى

in

ٱلْأَرْضِ ۚ

the earth

l-arḍi

فَلَا

So (do) not

falā

تَأْسَ

grieve

tasa

عَلَى

over

ʿalā

ٱلْقَوْمِ

the people

l-qawmi

ٱلْفَـٰسِقِينَ

the defiantly disobedient

l-fāsiqīna

٢٦

[Allāh] said, "Then indeed, it is forbidden to them for forty years [in which] they will wander throughout the land. So do not grieve over the defiantly disobedient people."

— Saheeh International

۞ وَٱتْلُ

And recite

wa-ut'lu

عَلَيْهِمْ

to them

ʿalayhim

نَبَأَ

the story

naba-a

ٱبْنَىْ

(of) two sons

ib'nay

ءَادَمَ

(of) Adam

ādama

بِٱلْحَقِّ

in truth

bil-ḥaqi

إِذْ

when

idh

قَرَّبَا

both offered

qarrabā

قُرْبَانًۭا

a sacrifice

qur'bānan

فَتُقُبِّلَ

and it was accepted

fatuqubbila

مِنْ

from

min

أَحَدِهِمَا

one of them

aḥadihimā

وَلَمْ

and not

walam

يُتَقَبَّلْ

was accepted

yutaqabbal

مِنَ

from

mina

ٱلْـَٔاخَرِ

the other

l-ākhari

قَالَ

Said (the latter)

qāla

لَأَقْتُلَنَّكَ ۖ

Surely I will kill you

la-aqtulannaka

قَالَ

Said (the former)

qāla

إِنَّمَا

Only

innamā

يَتَقَبَّلُ

accepts

yataqabbalu

ٱللَّهُ

(does) Allah

l-lahu

مِنَ

from

mina

ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ

the God fearing

l-mutaqīna

٢٧

And recite to them the story of Adam's two sons, in truth, when they both made an offering [to Allāh], and it was accepted from one of them but was not accepted from the other. Said [the latter], "I will surely kill you." Said [the former], "Indeed, Allāh only accepts from the righteous [who fear Him].

— Saheeh International

لَئِنۢ

If

la-in

بَسَطتَ

you stretch

basaṭta

إِلَىَّ

towards me

ilayya

يَدَكَ

your hand

yadaka

لِتَقْتُلَنِى

to kill me

litaqtulanī

مَآ

not

أَنَا۠

will I

anā

بِبَاسِطٍۢ

stretch

bibāsiṭin

يَدِىَ

my hand

yadiya

إِلَيْكَ

towards you

ilayka

لِأَقْتُلَكَ ۖ

to kill you

li-aqtulaka

إِنِّىٓ

indeed I

innī

أَخَافُ

fear

akhāfu

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

رَبَّ

(the) Lord

rabba

ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ

(of) the worlds

l-ʿālamīna

٢٨

If you should raise your hand toward me to kill me - I shall not raise my hand toward you to kill you. Indeed, I fear Allāh, Lord of the worlds.

— Saheeh International

إِنِّىٓ

Indeed, I

innī

أُرِيدُ

wish

urīdu

أَن

that

an

تَبُوٓأَ

you be laden

tabūa

بِإِثْمِى

with my sin

bi-ith'mī

وَإِثْمِكَ

and your sin

wa-ith'mika

فَتَكُونَ

so you will be

fatakūna

مِنْ

among

min

أَصْحَـٰبِ

(the) companions

aṣḥābi

ٱلنَّارِ ۚ

(of) the Fire

l-nāri

وَذَٰلِكَ

and that

wadhālika

جَزَٰٓؤُا۟

(is the) recompense

jazāu

ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ

(of) the wrong-doers

l-ẓālimīna

٢٩

Indeed, I want you to obtain [thereby] my sin and your sin so you will be among the companions of the Fire. And that is the recompense of wrongdoers."

— Saheeh International

فَطَوَّعَتْ

Then prompted

faṭawwaʿat

لَهُۥ

to him

lahu

نَفْسُهُۥ

his soul

nafsuhu

قَتْلَ

(to) kill

qatla

أَخِيهِ

his brother

akhīhi

فَقَتَلَهُۥ

so he killed him

faqatalahu

فَأَصْبَحَ

and became

fa-aṣbaḥa

مِنَ

of

mina

ٱلْخَـٰسِرِينَ

the losers

l-khāsirīna

٣٠

And his soul permitted to him1 the murder of his brother, so he killed him and became among the losers.

— Saheeh International

فَبَعَثَ

Then (was) sent

fabaʿatha

ٱللَّهُ

(by) Allah

l-lahu

غُرَابًۭا

a crow

ghurāban

يَبْحَثُ

it (was) scratching

yabḥathu

فِى

in

ٱلْأَرْضِ

the earth

l-arḍi

لِيُرِيَهُۥ

to show him

liyuriyahu

كَيْفَ

how

kayfa

يُوَٰرِى

to hide

yuwārī

سَوْءَةَ

(the) dead body

sawata

أَخِيهِ ۚ

(of) his brother

akhīhi

قَالَ

He said

qāla

يَـٰوَيْلَتَىٰٓ

Woe to me

yāwaylatā

أَعَجَزْتُ

Am I unable

aʿajaztu

أَنْ

that

an

أَكُونَ

I can be

akūna

مِثْلَ

like

mith'la

هَـٰذَا

this

hādhā

ٱلْغُرَابِ

[the] crow

l-ghurābi

فَأُوَٰرِىَ

and hide

fa-uwāriya

سَوْءَةَ

(the) dead body

sawata

أَخِى ۖ

(of) my brother

akhī

فَأَصْبَحَ

Then he became

fa-aṣbaḥa

مِنَ

of

mina

ٱلنَّـٰدِمِينَ

the regretful

l-nādimīna

٣١

Then Allāh sent a crow searching [i.e., scratching] in the ground to show him how to hide the disgrace1 of his brother. He said, "O woe to me! Have I failed to be like this crow and hide the disgrace [i.e., body] of my brother?" And he became of the regretful.

— Saheeh International
