Al-Muzzammil

The Enshrouded One

المزمل

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا

O you

yāayyuhā

ٱلْمُزَّمِّلُ

who wraps himself

l-muzamilu

١

O you who wraps himself [in clothing]1

— Saheeh International

قُمِ

Stand

qumi

ٱلَّيْلَ

(in) the night

al-layla

إِلَّا

except

illā

قَلِيلًۭا

a little

qalīlan

٢

Arise [to pray] the night, except for a little -

— Saheeh International

نِّصْفَهُۥٓ

Half of it

niṣ'fahu

أَوِ

or

awi

ٱنقُصْ

lessen

unquṣ

مِنْهُ

from it

min'hu

قَلِيلًا

a little

qalīlan

٣

Half of it - or subtract from it a little

— Saheeh International

أَوْ

Or

aw

زِدْ

add

zid

عَلَيْهِ

to it

ʿalayhi

وَرَتِّلِ

and recite

warattili

ٱلْقُرْءَانَ

the Quran

l-qur'āna

تَرْتِيلًا

(with) measured rhythmic recitation

tartīlan

٤

Or add to it, and recite the Qur’ān with measured recitation.

— Saheeh International

إِنَّا

Indeed, We

innā

سَنُلْقِى

will cast

sanul'qī

عَلَيْكَ

upon you

ʿalayka

قَوْلًۭا

a Word

qawlan

ثَقِيلًا

heavy

thaqīlan

٥

Indeed, We will cast upon you a heavy word.1

— Saheeh International

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

نَاشِئَةَ

(the) rising

nāshi-ata

ٱلَّيْلِ

(at) the night

al-layli

هِىَ

it

hiya

أَشَدُّ

(is) very hard

ashaddu

وَطْـًۭٔا

and most potent

waṭan

وَأَقْوَمُ

and more suitable

wa-aqwamu

قِيلًا

(for) Word

qīlan

٦

Indeed, the hours of the night are more effective for concurrence [of heart and tongue]1 and more suitable for words.2

— Saheeh International

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

لَكَ

for you

laka

فِى

in

ٱلنَّهَارِ

the day

l-nahāri

سَبْحًۭا

(is) occupation

sabḥan

طَوِيلًۭا

prolonged

ṭawīlan

٧

Indeed, for you by day is prolonged occupation.

— Saheeh International

وَٱذْكُرِ

And remember

wa-udh'kuri

ٱسْمَ

(the) name

is'ma

رَبِّكَ

(of) your Lord

rabbika

وَتَبَتَّلْ

and devote yourself

watabattal

إِلَيْهِ

to Him

ilayhi

تَبْتِيلًۭا

(with) devotion

tabtīlan

٨

And remember the name of your Lord and devote yourself to Him with [complete] devotion.

— Saheeh International

رَّبُّ

(The) Lord

rabbu

ٱلْمَشْرِقِ

(of) the east

l-mashriqi

وَٱلْمَغْرِبِ

and the west

wal-maghribi

لَآ

(there is) no

إِلَـٰهَ

god

ilāha

إِلَّا

except

illā

هُوَ

Him

huwa

فَٱتَّخِذْهُ

so take Him

fa-ittakhidh'hu

وَكِيلًۭا

(as) Disposer of Affairs

wakīlan

٩

[He is] the Lord of the East and the West; there is no deity except Him, so take Him as Disposer of [your] affairs.1

— Saheeh International

وَٱصْبِرْ

And be patient

wa-iṣ'bir

عَلَىٰ

over

ʿalā

مَا

what

يَقُولُونَ

they say

yaqūlūna

وَٱهْجُرْهُمْ

and avoid them

wa-uh'jur'hum

هَجْرًۭا

an avoidance

hajran

جَمِيلًۭا

gracious

jamīlan

١٠

And be patient over what they say and avoid them with gracious avoidance.

— Saheeh International

وَذَرْنِى

And leave Me

wadharnī

وَٱلْمُكَذِّبِينَ

and the deniers

wal-mukadhibīna

أُو۟لِى

possessors

ulī

ٱلنَّعْمَةِ

(of) the ease

l-naʿmati

وَمَهِّلْهُمْ

and allow them respite

wamahhil'hum

قَلِيلًا

a little

qalīlan

١١

And leave Me with [the matter of] the deniers, those of ease [in life], and allow them respite a little.

— Saheeh International

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

لَدَيْنَآ

with Us

ladaynā

أَنكَالًۭا

(are) shackles

ankālan

وَجَحِيمًۭا

and burning fire

wajaḥīman

١٢

Indeed, with Us [for them] are shackles and burning fire.

— Saheeh International

وَطَعَامًۭا

And food

waṭaʿāman

ذَا

that

dhā

غُصَّةٍۢ

chokes

ghuṣṣatin

وَعَذَابًا

and a punishment

waʿadhāban

أَلِيمًۭا

painful

alīman

١٣

And food that chokes and a painful punishment -

— Saheeh International

يَوْمَ

(On the) Day

yawma

تَرْجُفُ

will quake

tarjufu

ٱلْأَرْضُ

the earth

l-arḍu

وَٱلْجِبَالُ

and the mountains

wal-jibālu

وَكَانَتِ

and will become

wakānati

ٱلْجِبَالُ

the mountains

l-jibālu

كَثِيبًۭا

a heap of sand

kathīban

مَّهِيلًا

pouring down

mahīlan

١٤

On the Day the earth and the mountains will convulse and the mountains will become a heap of sand pouring down.

— Saheeh International

إِنَّآ

Indeed, We

innā

أَرْسَلْنَآ

[We] have sent

arsalnā

إِلَيْكُمْ

to you

ilaykum

رَسُولًۭا

a Messenger

rasūlan

شَـٰهِدًا

(as) a witness

shāhidan

عَلَيْكُمْ

upon you

ʿalaykum

كَمَآ

as

kamā

أَرْسَلْنَآ

We sent

arsalnā

إِلَىٰ

to

ilā

فِرْعَوْنَ

Firaun

fir'ʿawna

رَسُولًۭا

a Messenger

rasūlan

١٥

Indeed, We have sent to you a Messenger as a witness upon you just as We sent to Pharaoh a messenger.

— Saheeh International

فَعَصَىٰ

But disobeyed

faʿaṣā

فِرْعَوْنُ

Firaun

fir'ʿawnu

ٱلرَّسُولَ

the Messenger

l-rasūla

فَأَخَذْنَـٰهُ

so We seized him

fa-akhadhnāhu

أَخْذًۭا

(with) a seizure

akhdhan

وَبِيلًۭا

ruinous

wabīlan

١٦

But Pharaoh disobeyed the messenger, so We seized him with a ruinous seizure.

— Saheeh International

فَكَيْفَ

Then how

fakayfa

تَتَّقُونَ

will you guard yourselves

tattaqūna

إِن

if

in

كَفَرْتُمْ

you disbelieve

kafartum

يَوْمًۭا

a Day

yawman

يَجْعَلُ

(that) will make

yajʿalu

ٱلْوِلْدَٰنَ

the children

l-wil'dāna

شِيبًا

gray-haired

shīban

١٧

Then how can you fear, if you disbelieve, a Day that will make the children white-haired?1

— Saheeh International

ٱلسَّمَآءُ

The heaven

al-samāu

مُنفَطِرٌۢ

(will) break apart

munfaṭirun

بِهِۦ ۚ

therefrom

bihi

كَانَ

is

kāna

وَعْدُهُۥ

His Promise

waʿduhu

مَفْعُولًا

to be fulfilled

mafʿūlan

١٨

The heaven will break apart therefrom;1 ever is His promise fulfilled.

— Saheeh International

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

هَـٰذِهِۦ

this

hādhihi

تَذْكِرَةٌۭ ۖ

(is) a Reminder

tadhkiratun

فَمَن

then whoever

faman

شَآءَ

wills

shāa

ٱتَّخَذَ

(let him) take

ittakhadha

إِلَىٰ

to

ilā

رَبِّهِۦ

his Lord

rabbihi

سَبِيلًا

a way

sabīlan

١٩

Indeed, this is a reminder, so whoever wills may take to his Lord a way.

— Saheeh International
