Al-Muzzammil
The Enshrouded One

المزمل
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا O you yāayyuhā who wraps himself l-muzamilu
O you who wraps himself [in clothing]1
قُمِ Stand qumi (in) the night al-layla except illā a little qalīlan
Arise [to pray] the night, except for a little -
نِّصْفَهُۥٓ Half of it niṣ'fahu or awi lessen unquṣ from it min'hu a little qalīlan
Half of it - or subtract from it a little
أَوْ Or aw add zid to it ʿalayhi and recite warattili the Quran l-qur'āna (with) measured rhythmic recitation tartīlan
Or add to it, and recite the Qur’ān with measured recitation.
إِنَّا Indeed, We innā will cast sanul'qī upon you ʿalayka a Word qawlan heavy thaqīlan
Indeed, We will cast upon you a heavy word.1
إِنَّ Indeed inna (the) rising nāshi-ata (at) the night al-layli it hiya (is) very hard ashaddu and most potent waṭan and more suitable wa-aqwamu (for) Word qīlan
Indeed, the hours of the night are more effective for concurrence [of heart and tongue]1 and more suitable for words.2
إِنَّ Indeed inna for you laka in fī the day l-nahāri (is) occupation sabḥan prolonged ṭawīlan
Indeed, for you by day is prolonged occupation.
وَٱذْكُرِ And remember wa-udh'kuri (the) name is'ma (of) your Lord rabbika and devote yourself watabattal to Him ilayhi (with) devotion tabtīlan
And remember the name of your Lord and devote yourself to Him with [complete] devotion.
رَّبُّ (The) Lord rabbu (of) the east l-mashriqi and the west wal-maghribi (there is) no lā god ilāha except illā Him huwa so take Him fa-ittakhidh'hu (as) Disposer of Affairs wakīlan
[He is] the Lord of the East and the West; there is no deity except Him, so take Him as Disposer of [your] affairs.1
وَٱصْبِرْ And be patient wa-iṣ'bir over ʿalā what mā they say yaqūlūna and avoid them wa-uh'jur'hum an avoidance hajran gracious jamīlan
And be patient over what they say and avoid them with gracious avoidance.
وَذَرْنِى And leave Me wadharnī and the deniers wal-mukadhibīna possessors ulī (of) the ease l-naʿmati and allow them respite wamahhil'hum a little qalīlan
And leave Me with [the matter of] the deniers, those of ease [in life], and allow them respite a little.
إِنَّ Indeed inna with Us ladaynā (are) shackles ankālan and burning fire wajaḥīman
Indeed, with Us [for them] are shackles and burning fire.
وَطَعَامًۭا And food waṭaʿāman that dhā chokes ghuṣṣatin and a punishment waʿadhāban painful alīman
And food that chokes and a painful punishment -
يَوْمَ (On the) Day yawma will quake tarjufu the earth l-arḍu and the mountains wal-jibālu and will become wakānati the mountains l-jibālu a heap of sand kathīban pouring down mahīlan
On the Day the earth and the mountains will convulse and the mountains will become a heap of sand pouring down.
إِنَّآ Indeed, We innā [We] have sent arsalnā to you ilaykum a Messenger rasūlan (as) a witness shāhidan upon you ʿalaykum as kamā We sent arsalnā to ilā Firaun fir'ʿawna a Messenger rasūlan
Indeed, We have sent to you a Messenger as a witness upon you just as We sent to Pharaoh a messenger.
فَعَصَىٰ But disobeyed faʿaṣā Firaun fir'ʿawnu the Messenger l-rasūla so We seized him fa-akhadhnāhu (with) a seizure akhdhan ruinous wabīlan
But Pharaoh disobeyed the messenger, so We seized him with a ruinous seizure.
فَكَيْفَ Then how fakayfa will you guard yourselves tattaqūna if in you disbelieve kafartum a Day yawman (that) will make yajʿalu the children l-wil'dāna gray-haired shīban
Then how can you fear, if you disbelieve, a Day that will make the children white-haired?1
ٱلسَّمَآءُ The heaven al-samāu (will) break apart munfaṭirun therefrom bihi is kāna His Promise waʿduhu to be fulfilled mafʿūlan
The heaven will break apart therefrom;1 ever is His promise fulfilled.
إِنَّ Indeed inna this hādhihi (is) a Reminder tadhkiratun then whoever faman wills shāa (let him) take ittakhadha to ilā his Lord rabbihi a way sabīlan
Indeed, this is a reminder, so whoever wills may take to his Lord a way.
