فَلَآ But nay falā I swear uq'simu by (the) Lord birabbi (of) the risings l-mashāriqi and the settings wal-maghāribi that We innā (are) surely Able laqādirūna
So I swear by the Lord of [all] risings and settings1 that indeed We are able
عَلَىٰٓ [On] ʿalā to an [We] replace nubaddila (with) better khayran than them min'hum and not wamā We naḥnu (are) to be outrun bimasbūqīna
To replace them with better than them; and We are not to be outdone.
فَذَرْهُمْ So leave them fadharhum (to) converse vainly yakhūḍū and amuse themselves wayalʿabū until ḥattā they meet yulāqū their Day yawmahumu which alladhī they are promised yūʿadūna
So leave them to converse vainly and amuse themselves until they meet their Day which they are promised -
يَوْمَ (The) Day yawma they will come out yakhrujūna from mina the graves l-ajdāthi rapidly sirāʿan as if they (were) ka-annahum to ilā a goal nuṣubin hastening yūfiḍūna
The Day they will emerge from the graves rapidly as if they were, toward an erected idol, hastening.1
خَـٰشِعَةً Humbled khāshiʿatan their eyesights abṣāruhum will cover them tarhaquhum humiliation dhillatun That dhālika (is) the Day l-yawmu which alladhī they were kānū promised yūʿadūna
Their eyes humbled, humiliation will cover them. That is the Day which they had been promised.

نوح
إِنَّآ Indeed, We innā [We] sent arsalnā Nuh nūḥan to ilā his people qawmihi that an Warn andhir your people qawmaka from min before qabli [that] an comes to them yatiyahum a punishment ʿadhābun painful alīmun
Indeed, We sent Noah to his people, [saying], "Warn your people before there comes to them a painful punishment."
قَالَ He said qāla O my people yāqawmi Indeed, I am innī to you lakum a warner nadhīrun clear mubīnun
He said, "O my people, indeed I am to you a clear warner -
أَنِ That ani Worship uʿ'budū Allah l-laha and fear Him wa-ittaqūhu and obey me wa-aṭīʿūni
To worship Allāh, fear Him and obey me.
يَغْفِرْ He will forgive yaghfir for you lakum [of] min your sins dhunūbikum and give you respite wayu-akhir'kum for ilā a term ajalin specified musamman Indeed inna (the) term ajala (of) Allah l-lahi when idhā it comes jāa not lā is delayed yu-akharu if law you kuntum know taʿlamūna
He [i.e., Allāh] will forgive you of your sins and delay you for a specified term. Indeed, the time [set by] Allāh, when it comes, will not be delayed, if you only knew."
قَالَ He said qāla My Lord rabbi Indeed, I innī invited daʿawtu my people qawmī night laylan and day wanahāran
He said, "My Lord, indeed I invited my people [to truth] night and day.
فَلَمْ But not falam increased them yazid'hum my invitation duʿāī except illā (in) flight firāran
But my invitation increased them not except in flight [i.e., aversion].
وَإِنِّى And indeed, I wa-innī every time kullamā I invited them daʿawtuhum that You may forgive litaghfira them lahum they put jaʿalū their fingers aṣābiʿahum in fī their ears ādhānihim and covered themselves wa-is'taghshaw (with) their garments thiyābahum and persisted wa-aṣarrū and were arrogant wa-is'takbarū (with) pride is'tik'bāran
And indeed, every time I invited them that You may forgive them, they put their fingers in their ears, covered themselves with their garments,1 persisted, and were arrogant with [great] arrogance.
ثُمَّ Then thumma indeed, I innī invited them daʿawtuhum publicly jihāran
Then I invited them publicly.
ثُمَّ Then thumma indeed, I innī announced aʿlantu to them lahum and I confided wa-asrartu to them lahum secretly is'rāran
Then I announced to them and [also] confided to them secretly
فَقُلْتُ Then I said faqul'tu Ask forgiveness is'taghfirū (from) your Lord rabbakum Indeed, He innahu is kāna Oft-Forgiving ghaffāran
And said, 'Ask forgiveness of your Lord. Indeed, He is ever a Perpetual Forgiver.
