يُبَصَّرُونَهُمْ ۚ They will be made to see each other yubaṣṣarūnahum Would wish yawaddu the criminal l-muj'rimu if law he (could be) ransomed yaftadī from min (the) punishment ʿadhābi (of) that Day yawmi-idhin by his children bibanīhi
They will be shown each other. The criminal will wish that he could be ransomed from the punishment of that Day by his children.
وَصَـٰحِبَتِهِۦ And his spouse waṣāḥibatihi and his brother wa-akhīhi
And his wife and his brother
وَفَصِيلَتِهِ And his nearest kindred wafaṣīlatihi who allatī sheltered him tu'wīhi
And his nearest kindred who shelter him.
وَمَن And whoever waman (is) on fī the earth l-arḍi all jamīʿan then thumma it (could) save him yunjīhi
And whoever is on earth entirely [so] then it could save him.
كَلَّآ ۖ By no means kallā Indeed, it (is) innahā surely a Flame of Hell laẓā
No!1 Indeed, it is the Flame [of Hell],
نَزَّاعَةًۭ A remover nazzāʿatan of the skin of the head lilshawā
A remover of exteriors.1
تَدْعُوا۟ Inviting tadʿū (him) who man turned his back adbara and went away watawallā
It invites he who turned his back [on truth] and went away [from obedience]
وَجَمَعَ And collected wajamaʿa and hoarded fa-awʿā
And collected [wealth] and hoarded.
۞ إِنَّ Indeed inna the man l-insāna was created khuliqa anxious halūʿan
Indeed, mankind was created anxious:
إِذَا When idhā touches him massahu the evil l-sharu distressed jazūʿan
When evil touches him, impatient,
وَإِذَا And when wa-idhā touches him massahu the good l-khayru withholding manūʿan
And when good touches him, withholding [of it],
إِلَّا Except illā those who pray l-muṣalīna
Except the observers of prayer -
ٱلَّذِينَ Those who alladhīna [they] hum at ʿalā their prayer ṣalātihim (are) constant dāimūna
Those who are constant in their prayer
وَٱلَّذِينَ And those who wa-alladhīna in fī their wealth amwālihim (is) a right ḥaqqun known maʿlūmun
And those within whose wealth is a known right1
لِّلسَّآئِلِ For the one who asks lilssāili and the deprived wal-maḥrūmi
For the petitioner and the deprived -
وَٱلَّذِينَ And those who wa-alladhīna accept (the) truth yuṣaddiqūna (of the) Day biyawmi (of) the Judgment l-dīni
And those who believe in the Day of Recompense
وَٱلَّذِينَ And those who wa-alladhīna [they] hum of min (the) punishment ʿadhābi (of) their Lord rabbihim (are) fearful mush'fiqūna
And those who are fearful of the punishment of their Lord -
إِنَّ Indeed inna (the) punishment ʿadhāba (of) your Lord rabbihim (is) not ghayru to be felt secure (of) mamūnin
Indeed, the punishment of their Lord is not that from which one is safe -
وَٱلَّذِينَ And those who wa-alladhīna [they] hum their modesty lifurūjihim (are) guardians ḥāfiẓūna
And those who guard their private parts
إِلَّا Except illā from ʿalā their spouses azwājihim or aw what mā they possess malakat rightfully aymānuhum then indeed, they fa-innahum (are) not ghayru blameworthy malūmīna
Except from their wives or those their right hands possess,1 for indeed, they are not to be blamed -
فَمَنِ But whoever famani seeks ib'taghā beyond warāa that dhālika then those fa-ulāika [they] humu (are) the transgressors l-ʿādūna
But whoever seeks beyond that, then they are the transgressors -
وَٱلَّذِينَ And those who wa-alladhīna [they] hum of their trusts li-amānātihim and their promise waʿahdihim (are) observers rāʿūna
And those who are to their trusts and promises attentive.
وَٱلَّذِينَ And those who wa-alladhīna [they] hum in their testimonies bishahādātihim stand firm qāimūna
And those who are in their testimonies upright
وَٱلَّذِينَ And those who wa-alladhīna [they] hum on ʿalā their prayer ṣalātihim keep a guard yuḥāfiẓūna
And those who [carefully] maintain their prayer:
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ Those ulāika (will be) in fī Gardens jannātin honored muk'ramūna
They will be in gardens,1 honored.
فَمَالِ So what is with famāli those who alladhīna disbelieve kafarū before you qibalaka (they) hasten muh'ṭiʿīna
So what is [the matter] with those who disbelieve, hastening [from] before you, [O Muḥammad],
عَنِ On ʿani the right l-yamīni and on waʿani the left l-shimāli (in) separate groups ʿizīna
[To sit] on [your] right and [your] left in separate groups?1
أَيَطْمَعُ Does long ayaṭmaʿu every kullu person im'ri-in among them min'hum that an he enters yud'khala a Garden jannata (of) Delight naʿīmin
Does every person among them aspire to enter a garden of pleasure?
كَلَّآ ۖ By no means kallā Indeed, We innā [We] have created them khalaqnāhum from what mimmā they know yaʿlamūna
No! Indeed, We have created them from that which they know.1
