At-Taĥrīm

The Prohibition

التحريم

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا

O

yāayyuhā

ٱلنَّبِىُّ

Prophet

l-nabiyu

لِمَ

Why (do)

lima

تُحَرِّمُ

you prohibit

tuḥarrimu

مَآ

what

أَحَلَّ

has made lawful

aḥalla

ٱللَّهُ

Allah

l-lahu

لَكَ ۖ

for you

laka

تَبْتَغِى

seeking

tabtaghī

مَرْضَاتَ

(to) please

marḍāta

أَزْوَٰجِكَ ۚ

your wives

azwājika

وَٱللَّهُ

And Allah

wal-lahu

غَفُورٌۭ

(is) Oft-Forgiving

ghafūrun

رَّحِيمٌۭ

Most Merciful

raḥīmun

١

O Prophet, why do you prohibit [yourself from] what Allāh has made lawful for you, seeking the approval of your wives? And Allāh is Forgiving and Merciful.

— Saheeh International

قَدْ

Indeed

qad

فَرَضَ

has ordained

faraḍa

ٱللَّهُ

Allah

l-lahu

لَكُمْ

for you

lakum

تَحِلَّةَ

(the) dissolution

taḥillata

أَيْمَـٰنِكُمْ ۚ

(of) your oaths

aymānikum

وَٱللَّهُ

And Allah

wal-lahu

مَوْلَىٰكُمْ ۖ

(is) your Protector

mawlākum

وَهُوَ

and He

wahuwa

ٱلْعَلِيمُ

(is) the All-Knower

l-ʿalīmu

ٱلْحَكِيمُ

the All-Wise

l-ḥakīmu

٢

Allāh has already ordained for you [Muslims] the dissolution of your oaths.1 And Allāh is your protector, and He is the Knowing, the Wise.

— Saheeh International

وَإِذْ

And when

wa-idh

أَسَرَّ

confided

asarra

ٱلنَّبِىُّ

the Prophet

l-nabiyu

إِلَىٰ

to

ilā

بَعْضِ

one

baʿḍi

أَزْوَٰجِهِۦ

(of) his wives

azwājihi

حَدِيثًۭا

a statement

ḥadīthan

فَلَمَّا

and when

falammā

نَبَّأَتْ

she informed

nabba-at

بِهِۦ

about it

bihi

وَأَظْهَرَهُ

and made it apparent

wa-aẓharahu

ٱللَّهُ

Allah

l-lahu

عَلَيْهِ

to him

ʿalayhi

عَرَّفَ

he made known

ʿarrafa

بَعْضَهُۥ

a part of it

baʿḍahu

وَأَعْرَضَ

and avoided

wa-aʿraḍa

عَنۢ

[of]

ʿan

بَعْضٍۢ ۖ

a part

baʿḍin

فَلَمَّا

Then when

falammā

نَبَّأَهَا

he informed her

nabba-ahā

بِهِۦ

about it

bihi

قَالَتْ

she said

qālat

مَنْ

Who

man

أَنۢبَأَكَ

informed you

anba-aka

هَـٰذَا ۖ

this

hādhā

قَالَ

He said

qāla

نَبَّأَنِىَ

Has informed me

nabba-aniya

ٱلْعَلِيمُ

the All-Knower

l-ʿalīmu

ٱلْخَبِيرُ

the All-Aware

l-khabīru

٣

And [remember] when the Prophet confided to one of his wives a statement; and when she informed [another] of it and Allāh showed it to him, he made known part of it and ignored a part. And when he informed her about it, she said, "Who told you this?" He said, "I was informed by the Knowing, the Aware."

— Saheeh International

إِن

If

in

تَتُوبَآ

you both turn

tatūbā

إِلَى

to

ilā

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

فَقَدْ

so indeed

faqad

صَغَتْ

(are) inclined

ṣaghat

قُلُوبُكُمَا ۖ

your hearts

qulūbukumā

وَإِن

but if

wa-in

تَظَـٰهَرَا

you backup each other

taẓāharā

عَلَيْهِ

against him

ʿalayhi

فَإِنَّ

then indeed

fa-inna

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

هُوَ

He

huwa

مَوْلَىٰهُ

(is) his Protector

mawlāhu

وَجِبْرِيلُ

and Jibreel

wajib'rīlu

وَصَـٰلِحُ

and (the) righteous

waṣāliḥu

ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ ۖ

believers

l-mu'minīna

وَٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةُ

and the Angels

wal-malāikatu

بَعْدَ

after

baʿda

ذَٰلِكَ

that

dhālika

ظَهِيرٌ

(are his) assistants

ẓahīrun

٤

If you two [wives] repent to Allāh, [it is best], for your hearts have deviated. But if you cooperate against him - then indeed Allāh is his protector, and Gabriel and the righteous of the believers and the angels, moreover, are [his] assistants.

— Saheeh International

عَسَىٰ

Perhaps

ʿasā

رَبُّهُۥٓ

his Lord

rabbuhu

إِن

if

in

طَلَّقَكُنَّ

he divorced you

ṭallaqakunna

أَن

[that]

an

يُبْدِلَهُۥٓ

He will substitute for him

yub'dilahu

أَزْوَٰجًا

wives

azwājan

خَيْرًۭا

better

khayran

مِّنكُنَّ

than you

minkunna

مُسْلِمَـٰتٍۢ

submissive

mus'limātin

مُّؤْمِنَـٰتٍۢ

faithful

mu'minātin

قَـٰنِتَـٰتٍۢ

obedient

qānitātin

تَـٰٓئِبَـٰتٍ

repentant

tāibātin

عَـٰبِدَٰتٍۢ

who worship

ʿābidātin

سَـٰٓئِحَـٰتٍۢ

who fast

sāiḥātin

ثَيِّبَـٰتٍۢ

previously married

thayyibātin

وَأَبْكَارًۭا

and virgins

wa-abkāran

٥

Perhaps his Lord, if he divorced you [all], would substitute for him wives better than you - submitting [to Allāh], believing, devoutly obedient, repentant, worshipping, and traveling1 - [ones] previously married and virgins.

— Saheeh International

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا

O

yāayyuhā

ٱلَّذِينَ

(you) who

alladhīna

ءَامَنُوا۟

believe

āmanū

قُوٓا۟

Protect

أَنفُسَكُمْ

yourselves

anfusakum

وَأَهْلِيكُمْ

and your families

wa-ahlīkum

نَارًۭا

(from) a Fire

nāran

وَقُودُهَا

whose fuel

waqūduhā

ٱلنَّاسُ

(is) people

l-nāsu

وَٱلْحِجَارَةُ

and stones

wal-ḥijāratu

عَلَيْهَا

over it

ʿalayhā

مَلَـٰٓئِكَةٌ

(are) Angels

malāikatun

غِلَاظٌۭ

stern

ghilāẓun

شِدَادٌۭ

severe

shidādun

لَّا

not

يَعْصُونَ

they disobey

yaʿṣūna

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

مَآ

(in) what

أَمَرَهُمْ

He Commands them

amarahum

وَيَفْعَلُونَ

but they do

wayafʿalūna

مَا

what

يُؤْمَرُونَ

they are commanded

yu'marūna

٦

O you who have believed, protect yourselves and your families from a Fire whose fuel is people and stones, over which are [appointed] angels, harsh and severe; they do not disobey Allāh in what He commands them but do what they are commanded.

— Saheeh International

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا

O

yāayyuhā

ٱلَّذِينَ

(you) who

alladhīna

كَفَرُوا۟

disbelieve

kafarū

لَا

(Do) not

تَعْتَذِرُوا۟

make excuses

taʿtadhirū

ٱلْيَوْمَ ۖ

today

l-yawma

إِنَّمَا

Only

innamā

تُجْزَوْنَ

you will be recompensed

tuj'zawna

مَا

(for) what

كُنتُمْ

you used to

kuntum

تَعْمَلُونَ

do

taʿmalūna

٧

O you who have disbelieved, make no excuses that Day. You will only be recompensed for what you used to do.

— Saheeh International
