أَسْكِنُوهُنَّ Lodge them askinūhunna from min where ḥaythu you dwell sakantum (out) of min your means wuj'dikum and (do) not walā harm them tuḍārrūhunna to distress lituḍayyiqū [on] them ʿalayhinna And if wa-in they are kunna those (who are) ulāti pregnant ḥamlin then spend fa-anfiqū on them ʿalayhinna until ḥattā they deliver yaḍaʿna their burden ḥamlahunna Then if fa-in they suckle arḍaʿna for you lakum then give them faātūhunna their payment ujūrahunna and consult watamirū among yourselves baynakum with kindness bimaʿrūfin but if wa-in you disagree taʿāsartum then may suckle fasatur'ḍiʿu for him lahu another (women) ukh'rā
Lodge them1 [in a section] of where you dwell out of your means and do not harm them in order to oppress them.2 And if they should be pregnant, then spend on them until they give birth. And if they breastfeed for you, then give them their payment and confer among yourselves in the acceptable way; but if you are in discord, then there may breastfeed for him [i.e., the father] another woman.3
لِيُنفِقْ Let spend liyunfiq owner dhū (of) ample means saʿatin from min his ample means saʿatihi and (he) who waman is restricted qudira on him ʿalayhi his provision riz'quhu let him spend falyunfiq from what mimmā he has been given ātāhu (by) Allah l-lahu Does not lā burden yukallifu Allah l-lahu any soul nafsan except illā (with) what mā He has given it ātāhā Will bring about sayajʿalu Allah l-lahu after baʿda hardship ʿus'rin ease yus'ran
Let a man of wealth spend from his wealth, and he whose provision is restricted - let him spend from what Allāh has given him. Allāh does not charge a soul except [according to] what He has given it. Allāh will bring about, after hardship, ease [i.e., relief].
وَكَأَيِّن And how many waka-ayyin of min a town qaryatin rebelled ʿatat against ʿan (the) Command amri (of) its Lord rabbihā and His Messengers warusulihi so We took it to account faḥāsabnāhā an account ḥisāban severe shadīdan and We punished it waʿadhabnāhā a punishment ʿadhāban terrible nuk'ran
And how many a city was insolent toward the command of its Lord and His messengers, so We took it to severe account and punished it with a terrible punishment.
فَذَاقَتْ So it tasted fadhāqat (the bad) consequence wabāla (of) its affair amrihā and was wakāna (the) end ʿāqibatu (of) its affair amrihā loss khus'ran
And it tasted the bad consequence of its affair [i.e., rebellion], and the outcome of its affair was loss.
أَعَدَّ Has prepared aʿadda Allah l-lahu for them lahum a punishment ʿadhāban severe shadīdan So fear fa-ittaqū Allah l-laha O men yāulī (of) understanding l-albābi those who alladhīna have believed āmanū Indeed qad Has sent down anzala Allah l-lahu to you ilaykum a Message dhik'ran
Allāh has prepared for them a severe punishment; so fear Allāh, O you of understanding who have believed. Allāh has sent down to you a message [i.e., the Qur’ān].1
رَّسُولًۭا A Messenger rasūlan reciting yatlū to you ʿalaykum (the) Verses āyāti (of) Allah l-lahi clear mubayyinātin that he may bring out liyukh'rija those who alladhīna believe āmanū and do waʿamilū righteous deeds l-ṣāliḥāti from mina the darkness[es] l-ẓulumāti towards ilā the light l-nūri And whoever waman believes yu'min in Allah bil-lahi and does wayaʿmal righteous deeds ṣāliḥan He will admit him yud'khil'hu (into) Gardens jannātin flow tajrī from min underneath it taḥtihā the rivers l-anhāru abiding khālidīna therein fīhā forever abadan Indeed qad Has been (granted) good aḥsana (by) Allah l-lahu for him lahu provision riz'qan
[He sent] a Messenger [i.e., Muḥammad (ﷺ)] reciting to you the distinct verses of Allāh that He may bring out those who believe and do righteous deeds from darknesses into the light. And whoever believes in Allāh and does righteousness - He will admit him into gardens beneath which rivers flow to abide therein forever. Allāh will have perfected for him a provision.
ٱللَّهُ Allah al-lahu (is) He Who alladhī created khalaqa seven sabʿa heavens samāwātin and of wamina the earth l-arḍi (the) like of them mith'lahunna Descends yatanazzalu the command l-amru between them baynahunna that you may know litaʿlamū that anna Allah l-laha (is) on ʿalā every kulli thing shayin All-Powerful qadīrun And that wa-anna Allah l-laha indeed qad encompasses aḥāṭa all bikulli things shayin (in) knowledge ʿil'man
It is Allāh who has created seven heavens and of the earth, the like of them.1 [His] command descends among them so you may know that Allāh is over all things competent and that Allāh has encompassed all things in knowledge.
