أَلَمْ Have not alam you seen tara [to] ilā those who alladhīna were given ūtū a portion naṣīban of mina the Scripture l-kitābi They are invited yud'ʿawna to ilā (the) Book kitābi (of) Allah l-lahi that (it should) arbitrate liyaḥkuma between them baynahum then thumma turns away yatawallā a party farīqun of them min'hum and they (are) wahum those who are averse muʿ'riḍūna
Do you not consider, [O Muḥammad], those who were given a portion of the Scripture? They are invited to the Scripture of Allāh that it should arbitrate between them;1 then a party of them turns away, and they are refusing.
ذَٰلِكَ That dhālika (is) because they bi-annahum say qālū Never lan will touch us tamassanā the Fire l-nāru except illā (for) days ayyāman numbered maʿdūdātin And deceived them wagharrahum in fī their religion dīnihim what mā they were kānū inventing yaftarūna
That is because they say, "Never will the Fire touch us except for [a few] numbered days," and [because] they were deluded in their religion by what they were inventing.
فَكَيْفَ Then how (will it be) fakayfa when idhā We will gather them jamaʿnāhum on a Day liyawmin no lā doubt rayba in it fīhi And will be paid in full wawuffiyat every kullu soul nafsin what mā it earned kasabat and they wahum (will) not lā be wronged yuẓ'lamūna
So how will it be when We assemble them for a Day about which there is no doubt? And each soul will be compensated [in full for] what it earned, and they will not be wronged.
قُلِ Say quli O Allah l-lahuma Owner mālika (of) the Dominion l-mul'ki You give tu'tī the dominion l-mul'ka (to) whom man You will tashāu and You take away watanziʿu the dominion l-mul'ka from whom mimman You will tashāu and You honor watuʿizzu whom man You will tashāu and You humiliate watudhillu whom man You will tashāu In Your hand biyadika (is all) the good l-khayru Indeed, You innaka (are) on ʿalā every kulli thing shayin All-Powerful qadīrun
Say, "O Allāh, Owner of Sovereignty, You give sovereignty to whom You will and You take sovereignty away from whom You will. You honor whom You will and You humble whom You will. In Your hand1 is [all] good. Indeed, You are over all things competent.
تُولِجُ You cause to enter tūliju the night al-layla in fī the day l-nahāri and You cause to enter watūliju the day l-nahāra in fī the night al-layli and You bring forth watukh'riju the living l-ḥaya from mina the dead l-mayiti and You bring forth watukh'riju the dead l-mayita from mina the living l-ḥayi and You give provision watarzuqu (to) whom man You will tashāu without bighayri measure ḥisābin
You cause the night to enter the day, and You cause the day to enter the night; and You bring the living out of the dead, and You bring the dead out of the living. And You give provision to whom You will without account [i.e., limit or measure]."
لَّا (Let) not lā take yattakhidhi the believers l-mu'minūna the disbelievers l-kāfirīna (as) allies awliyāa from min instead of dūni the believers l-mu'minīna And whoever waman does yafʿal that dhālika then not he (has) falaysa from mina Allah l-lahi in fī anything shayin except illā that an you fear tattaqū from them min'hum (as) a precaution tuqātan And warns you wayuḥadhirukumu Allah l-lahu (of) Himself nafsahu and to wa-ilā Allah l-lahi (is) the final return l-maṣīru
Let not believers take disbelievers as allies [i.e., supporters or protectors] rather than believers. And whoever [of you] does that has nothing [i.e., no association] with Allāh, except when taking precaution against them in prudence.1 And Allāh warns you of Himself, and to Allāh is the [final] destination.
قُلْ Say qul Whether in you conceal tukh'fū what mā (is) in fī your breasts ṣudūrikum or aw you disclose it tub'dūhu knows it yaʿlamhu Allah l-lahu And He knows wayaʿlamu what mā (is) in fī the heavens l-samāwāti and what wamā (is) in fī the earth l-arḍi And Allah wal-lahu (is) on ʿalā every kulli thing shayin All-Powerful qadīrun
Say, "Whether you conceal what is in your breasts or reveal it, Allāh knows it. And He knows that which is in the heavens and that which is on the earth. And Allāh is over all things competent.
