An-Najm

The Star

النجم

وَٱلنَّجْمِ

By the star

wal-najmi

إِذَا

when

idhā

هَوَىٰ

it goes down

hawā

١

By the star when it descends,

— Saheeh International

مَا

Not

ضَلَّ

has strayed

ḍalla

صَاحِبُكُمْ

your companion

ṣāḥibukum

وَمَا

and not

wamā

غَوَىٰ

has he erred

ghawā

٢

Your companion [i.e., Muḥammad] has not strayed, nor has he erred,

— Saheeh International

وَمَا

And not

wamā

يَنطِقُ

he speaks

yanṭiqu

عَنِ

from

ʿani

ٱلْهَوَىٰٓ

the desire

l-hawā

٣

Nor does he speak from [his own] inclination.

— Saheeh International

إِنْ

Not

in

هُوَ

it

huwa

إِلَّا

(is) except

illā

وَحْىٌۭ

a revelation

waḥyun

يُوحَىٰ

revealed

yūḥā

٤

It is not but a revelation revealed,

— Saheeh International

عَلَّمَهُۥ

Has taught him

ʿallamahu

شَدِيدُ

the (one) mighty

shadīdu

ٱلْقُوَىٰ

(in) power

l-quwā

٥

Taught to him by one intense in strength [i.e., Gabriel] -

— Saheeh International

ذُو

Possessor of soundness

dhū

مِرَّةٍۢ

Possessor of soundness

mirratin

فَٱسْتَوَىٰ

And he rose

fa-is'tawā

٦

One of soundness.1 And he rose to [his] true form2

— Saheeh International

وَهُوَ

While he

wahuwa

بِٱلْأُفُقِ

(was) in the horizon

bil-ufuqi

ٱلْأَعْلَىٰ

the highest

l-aʿlā

٧

While he was in the higher [part of the] horizon.1

— Saheeh International

ثُمَّ

Then

thumma

دَنَا

he approached

danā

فَتَدَلَّىٰ

and came down

fatadallā

٨

Then he approached and descended

— Saheeh International

فَكَانَ

And was

fakāna

قَابَ

(at) a distance

qāba

قَوْسَيْنِ

(of) two bow-(lengths)

qawsayni

أَوْ

or

aw

أَدْنَىٰ

nearer

adnā

٩

And was at a distance of two bow lengths or nearer.

— Saheeh International

فَأَوْحَىٰٓ

So he revealed

fa-awḥā

إِلَىٰ

to

ilā

عَبْدِهِۦ

His slave

ʿabdihi

مَآ

what

أَوْحَىٰ

he revealed

awḥā

١٠

And he revealed to His Servant1 what he revealed [i.e., conveyed].

— Saheeh International

مَا

Not

كَذَبَ

lied

kadhaba

ٱلْفُؤَادُ

the heart

l-fuādu

مَا

what

رَأَىٰٓ

it saw

raā

١١

The heart1 did not lie [about] what it saw.

— Saheeh International

أَفَتُمَـٰرُونَهُۥ

Then will you dispute with him

afatumārūnahu

عَلَىٰ

about

ʿalā

مَا

what

يَرَىٰ

he saw

yarā

١٢

So will you dispute with him over what he saw?

— Saheeh International

وَلَقَدْ

And certainly

walaqad

رَءَاهُ

he saw him

raāhu

نَزْلَةً

(in) descent

nazlatan

أُخْرَىٰ

another

ukh'rā

١٣

And he certainly saw him in another descent1

— Saheeh International

عِندَ

Near

ʿinda

سِدْرَةِ

(the) Lote Tree

sid'rati

ٱلْمُنتَهَىٰ

(of) the utmost boundary

l-muntahā

١٤

At the Lote Tree of the Utmost Boundary -

— Saheeh International

عِندَهَا

Near it

ʿindahā

جَنَّةُ

(is the) Garden

jannatu

ٱلْمَأْوَىٰٓ

(of) Abode

l-mawā

١٥

Near it is the Garden of Refuge [i.e., Paradise] -

— Saheeh International

إِذْ

When

idh

يَغْشَى

covered

yaghshā

ٱلسِّدْرَةَ

the Lote Tree

l-sid'rata

مَا

what

يَغْشَىٰ

covers

yaghshā

١٦

When there covered the Lote Tree that which covered [it].1

— Saheeh International

مَا

Not

زَاغَ

swerved

zāgha

ٱلْبَصَرُ

the sight

l-baṣaru

وَمَا

and not

wamā

طَغَىٰ

it transgressed

ṭaghā

١٧

The sight [of the Prophet (ﷺ)] did not swerve, nor did it transgress [its limit].

— Saheeh International

لَقَدْ

Certainly

laqad

رَأَىٰ

he saw

raā

مِنْ

of

min

ءَايَـٰتِ

(the) Signs

āyāti

رَبِّهِ

(of) his Lord

rabbihi

ٱلْكُبْرَىٰٓ

the Greatest

l-kub'rā

١٨

He certainly saw of the greatest signs of his Lord.

— Saheeh International

أَفَرَءَيْتُمُ

So have you seen

afara-aytumu

ٱللَّـٰتَ

the Lat

l-lāta

وَٱلْعُزَّىٰ

and the Uzza

wal-ʿuzā

١٩

So have you considered al-Lāt and al-ʿUzzā?

— Saheeh International

وَمَنَوٰةَ

And Manat

wamanata

ٱلثَّالِثَةَ

the third

l-thālithata

ٱلْأُخْرَىٰٓ

the other

l-ukh'rā

٢٠

And Manāt, the third - the other one?1

— Saheeh International

أَلَكُمُ

Is for you

alakumu

ٱلذَّكَرُ

the male

l-dhakaru

وَلَهُ

and for Him

walahu

ٱلْأُنثَىٰ

the female

l-unthā

٢١

Is the male for you and for Him the female?

— Saheeh International

تِلْكَ

This

til'ka

إِذًۭا

then

idhan

قِسْمَةٌۭ

(is) a division

qis'matun

ضِيزَىٰٓ

unfair

ḍīzā

٢٢

That, then, is an unjust division.1

— Saheeh International

إِنْ

Not

in

هِىَ

they

hiya

إِلَّآ

(are) except

illā

أَسْمَآءٌۭ

names

asmāon

سَمَّيْتُمُوهَآ

you have named them

sammaytumūhā

أَنتُمْ

you

antum

وَءَابَآؤُكُم

and your forefathers

waābāukum

مَّآ

not

أَنزَلَ

has Allah sent down

anzala

ٱللَّهُ

has Allah sent down

l-lahu

بِهَا

for it

bihā

مِن

any

min

سُلْطَـٰنٍ ۚ

authority

sul'ṭānin

إِن

Not

in

يَتَّبِعُونَ

they follow

yattabiʿūna

إِلَّا

except

illā

ٱلظَّنَّ

assumption

l-ẓana

وَمَا

and what

wamā

تَهْوَى

desire

tahwā

ٱلْأَنفُسُ ۖ

the(ir) souls

l-anfusu

وَلَقَدْ

And certainly

walaqad

جَآءَهُم

has come to them

jāahum

مِّن

from

min

رَّبِّهِمُ

their Lord

rabbihimu

ٱلْهُدَىٰٓ

the guidance

l-hudā

٢٣

They are not but [mere] names you have named them - you and your forefathers - for which Allāh has sent down no authority. They follow not except assumption and what [their] souls desire, and there has already come to them from their Lord guidance.

— Saheeh International

أَمْ

Or

am

لِلْإِنسَـٰنِ

(is) for man

lil'insāni

مَا

what

تَمَنَّىٰ

he wishes

tamannā

٢٤

Or is there for man whatever he wishes?

— Saheeh International

فَلِلَّهِ

But for Allah

falillahi

ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةُ

(is) the last

l-ākhiratu

وَٱلْأُولَىٰ

and the first

wal-ūlā

٢٥

Rather, to Allāh belongs the Hereafter and the first [life].

— Saheeh International

۞ وَكَم

And how many

wakam

مِّن

of

min

مَّلَكٍۢ

(the) Angels

malakin

فِى

in

ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ

the heavens

l-samāwāti

لَا

not

تُغْنِى

will avail

tugh'nī

شَفَـٰعَتُهُمْ

their intercession

shafāʿatuhum

شَيْـًٔا

anything

shayan

إِلَّا

except

illā

مِنۢ

after

min

بَعْدِ

after

baʿdi

أَن

[that]

an

يَأْذَنَ

Allah has given permission

yadhana

ٱللَّهُ

Allah has given permission

l-lahu

لِمَن

for whom

liman

يَشَآءُ

He wills

yashāu

وَيَرْضَىٰٓ

and approves

wayarḍā

٢٦

And how many angels there are in the heavens whose intercession will not avail at all except [only] after Allāh has permitted [it] to whom He wills and approves.

— Saheeh International
