وَلَقَدْ And certainly walaqad We created khalaqnā man l-insāna and We know wanaʿlamu what mā whispers tuwaswisu to him bihi his soul nafsuhu and We wanaḥnu (are) nearer aqrabu to him ilayhi than min (his) jugular vein ḥabli (his) jugular vein l-warīdi
And We have already created man and know what his soul whispers to him, and We are closer1 to him than [his] jugular vein.
إِذْ When idh receive yatalaqqā the two receivers l-mutalaqiyāni on ʿani the right l-yamīni and on waʿani the left l-shimāli seated qaʿīdun
When the two receivers [i.e., recording angels] receive,1 seated on the right and on the left.
مَّا Not mā he utters yalfiẓu any min word qawlin but illā with him ladayhi (is) an observer raqībun ready ʿatīdun
He [i.e., man] utters no word except that with him is an observer prepared [to record].
وَجَآءَتْ And will come wajāat (the) stupor sakratu (of) death l-mawti in truth bil-ḥaqi That dhālika (is) what mā you were kunta [from it] min'hu avoiding taḥīdu
And the intoxication of death will bring the truth; that is what you were trying to avoid.
وَنُفِخَ And will be blown wanufikha [in] fī the trumpet l-ṣūri That dhālika (is the) Day yawmu (of) the Warning l-waʿīdi
And the Horn will be blown. That is the Day of [carrying out] the threat.
وَجَآءَتْ And will come wajāat every kullu soul nafsin with it maʿahā a driver sāiqun and a witness washahīdun
And every soul will come, with it a driver and a witness.1
لَّقَدْ Certainly laqad you were kunta in fī heedlessness ghaflatin of min this hādhā So We have removed fakashafnā from you ʿanka your cover ghiṭāaka so your sight fabaṣaruka today l-yawma (is) sharp ḥadīdun
[It will be said], "You were certainly in unmindfulness of this, and We have removed from you your cover,1 so your sight, this Day, is sharp."
وَقَالَ And (will) say waqāla his companion qarīnuhu This hādhā (is) what mā (is) with me ladayya ready ʿatīdun
And his companion, [the angel], will say, "This [record] is what is with me, prepared."
أَلْقِيَا Throw alqiyā in (to) fī Hell jahannama every kulla disbeliever kaffārin stubborn ʿanīdin
[Allāh will say], "Throw into Hell every obstinate disbeliever,
مَّنَّاعٍۢ Forbidder mannāʿin of good lil'khayri transgressor muʿ'tadin doubter murībin
Preventer of good, aggressor, and doubter,
ٱلَّذِى Who alladhī made jaʿala with maʿa Allah l-lahi a god ilāhan another ākhara so throw him fa-alqiyāhu in(to) fī the punishment l-ʿadhābi the severe l-shadīdi
Who made [as equal] with Allāh another deity; then throw him into the severe punishment."
۞ قَالَ Will say qāla his companion qarīnuhu Our Lord rabbanā not mā I made him transgress aṭghaytuhu but walākin he was kāna in fī error ḍalālin far baʿīdin
His [devil] companion will say, "Our Lord, I did not make him transgress, but he [himself] was in extreme error."
قَالَ He will say qāla (Do) not lā dispute takhtaṣimū (in) My presence ladayya and indeed waqad I sent forth qaddamtu to you ilaykum the Warning bil-waʿīdi
[Allāh] will say, "Do not dispute before Me, while I had already presented to you the threat [i.e., warning].
مَا Not mā will be changed yubaddalu the word l-qawlu with Me ladayya and not wamā I Am anā unjust biẓallāmin to My slaves lil'ʿabīdi
The word [i.e., decree] will not be changed with Me, and never will I be unjust to the servants."
يَوْمَ (The) Day yawma We will say naqūlu to Hell lijahannama Are hali you filled im'talati And it will say wataqūlu Are hal (there) any min more mazīdin
On the Day We will say to Hell, "Have you been filled?" and it will say, "Are there some more,"
وَأُزْلِفَتِ And will be brought near wa-uz'lifati the Paradise l-janatu to the righteous lil'muttaqīna not ghayra far baʿīdin
And Paradise will be brought near to the righteous, not far,
هَـٰذَا This hādhā (is) what mā you were promised tūʿadūna for everyone likulli who turns awwābin (and) who keeps ḥafīẓin
[It will be said], "This is what you were promised - for every returner [to Allāh] and keeper [of His covenant].
مَّنْ Who man feared khashiya the Most Gracious l-raḥmāna in the unseen bil-ghaybi and came wajāa with a heart biqalbin returning munībin
Who feared the Most Merciful in the unseen and came with a heart returning [in repentance].
ٱدْخُلُوهَا Enter it ud'khulūhā in peace bisalāmin That dhālika (is) a Day yawmu (of) Eternity l-khulūdi
Enter it in peace. This is the Day of Eternity."
لَهُم For them lahum whatever mā they wish yashāūna therein fīhā and with Us waladaynā (is) more mazīdun
They will have whatever they wish therein, and with Us is more.
