الدخان
إِنَّآ Indeed, We innā revealed it anzalnāhu in fī a Night laylatin Blessed mubārakatin Indeed, We innā [We] are kunnā (ever) warning mundhirīna
Indeed, We sent it down during a blessed night.1 Indeed, We were to warn [mankind].
فِيهَا Therein fīhā is made distinct yuf'raqu every kullu affair amrin wise ḥakīmin
Therein [i.e., on that night] is made distinct1 every precise matter -
أَمْرًۭا A command amran from min Us ʿindinā Indeed, We innā [We] are kunnā (ever) sending mur'silīna
[Every] matter [proceeding] from Us. Indeed, We were to send [a messenger]
رَحْمَةًۭ As Mercy raḥmatan from min your Lord rabbika Indeed, He innahu [He] huwa (is) the All-Hearer l-samīʿu the All-Knower l-ʿalīmu
As mercy from your Lord. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Knowing,
رَبِّ Lord rabbi (of) the heavens l-samāwāti and the earth wal-arḍi and whatever wamā (is) between both of them baynahumā if in you are kuntum certain mūqinīna
Lord of the heavens and the earth and that between them, if you would be certain.
لَآ (There is) no lā god ilāha except illā Him huwa He gives life yuḥ'yī and causes death wayumītu your Lord rabbukum and (the) Lord warabbu (of) your fathers ābāikumu the former l-awalīna
There is no deity except Him; He gives life and causes death. [He is] your Lord and the Lord of your first forefathers.
بَلْ Nay bal they hum (are) in fī doubt shakkin playing yalʿabūna
But they are in doubt, amusing themselves.
فَٱرْتَقِبْ Then watch fa-ir'taqib (for the) Day yawma (when) will bring tatī the sky l-samāu smoke bidukhānin visible mubīnin
Then watch for the Day when the sky will bring a visible smoke
يَغْشَى Enveloping yaghshā the people l-nāsa This hādhā (will be) a punishment ʿadhābun painful alīmun
Covering the people; this is a painful torment.
رَّبَّنَا Our Lord rabbanā Remove ik'shif from us ʿannā the punishment l-ʿadhāba indeed, we innā (are) believers mu'minūna
[They will say], "Our Lord, remove from us the torment; indeed, we are believers."
أَنَّىٰ How can annā (there be) for them lahumu the reminder l-dhik'rā when verily waqad had come to them jāahum a Messenger rasūlun clear mubīnun
How will there be for them a reminder [at that time]? And there had come to them a clear Messenger.
ثُمَّ Then thumma they turned away tawallaw from him ʿanhu and said waqālū One taught muʿallamun a mad man majnūnun
Then they turned away from him and said, "[He was] taught [and is] a madman."
إِنَّا Indeed, We innā (will) remove kāshifū the punishment l-ʿadhābi a little qalīlan indeed, you innakum (will) return ʿāidūna
Indeed, We will remove the torment for a little. Indeed, you [disbelievers] will return [to disbelief].
يَوْمَ (The) Day yawma We will seize nabṭishu (with) the seizure l-baṭshata the greatest l-kub'rā indeed, We innā (will) take retribution muntaqimūna
The Day We will strike with the greatest assault, indeed, We will take retribution.
۞ وَلَقَدْ And certainly walaqad We tried fatannā before them qablahum (the) people qawma (of) Firaun fir'ʿawna and came to them wajāahum a Messenger rasūlun noble karīmun
And We had already tried before them the people of Pharaoh, and there came to them a noble messenger [i.e., Moses],
أَنْ That an Deliver addū to me ilayya (the) servants ʿibāda (of) Allah l-lahi Indeed, I am innī to you lakum a Messenger rasūlun trustworthy amīnun
[Saying], "Render to me the servants of Allāh.1 Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger,"
