وَبَدَا

And will become apparent

wabadā

لَهُمْ

to them

lahum

سَيِّـَٔاتُ

(the) evils

sayyiātu

مَا

(of) what

كَسَبُوا۟

they earned

kasabū

وَحَاقَ

and will surround

waḥāqa

بِهِم

them

bihim

مَّا

what

كَانُوا۟

they used to

kānū

بِهِۦ

[in it]

bihi

يَسْتَهْزِءُونَ

mock

yastahziūna

٤٨

And there will appear to them the evils they had earned, and they will be enveloped by what they used to ridicule.

— Saheeh International

فَإِذَا

So when

fa-idhā

مَسَّ

touches

massa

ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ

[the] man

l-insāna

ضُرٌّۭ

adversity

ḍurrun

دَعَانَا

he calls upon Us

daʿānā

ثُمَّ

then

thumma

إِذَا

when

idhā

خَوَّلْنَـٰهُ

We bestow (on) him

khawwalnāhu

نِعْمَةًۭ

a favor

niʿ'matan

مِّنَّا

from Us

minnā

قَالَ

he says

qāla

إِنَّمَآ

Only

innamā

أُوتِيتُهُۥ

I have been given it

ūtītuhu

عَلَىٰ

for

ʿalā

عِلْمٍۭ ۚ

knowledge

ʿil'min

بَلْ

Nay

bal

هِىَ

it

hiya

فِتْنَةٌۭ

(is) a trial

fit'natun

وَلَـٰكِنَّ

but

walākinna

أَكْثَرَهُمْ

most of them

aktharahum

لَا

(do) not

يَعْلَمُونَ

know

yaʿlamūna

٤٩

And when adversity touches man, he calls upon Us; then when We bestow on him a favor from Us, he says, "I have only been given it because of [my] knowledge." Rather, it is a trial, but most of them do not know.

— Saheeh International

قَدْ

Indeed

qad

قَالَهَا

said it

ٱلَّذِينَ

قَبْلِهِمْ

before them

qablihim

فَمَآ

but (did) not

famā

أَغْنَىٰ

avail

aghnā

عَنْهُم

them

ʿanhum

مَّا

كَانُوا۟

they used to

kānū

يَكْسِبُونَ

earn

yaksibūna

٥٠

Those before them had already said it, but they were not availed by what they used to earn.

— Saheeh International

فَأَصَابَهُمْ

Then struck them

fa-aṣābahum

سَيِّـَٔاتُ

(the) evils

sayyiātu

مَا

(of) what

كَسَبُوا۟ ۚ

they earned

kasabū

وَٱلَّذِينَ

And those who

wa-alladhīna

ظَلَمُوا۟

have wronged

ẓalamū

مِنْ

of

min

هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ

these

hāulāi

سَيُصِيبُهُمْ

will strike them

sayuṣībuhum

سَيِّـَٔاتُ

(the) evils

sayyiātu

مَا

(of) what

كَسَبُوا۟

they earned

kasabū

وَمَا

and not

wamā

هُم

they

hum

بِمُعْجِزِينَ

will be able to escape

bimuʿ'jizīna

٥١

And the evil consequences of what they earned struck them. And those who have wronged of these [people] will be struck [i.e., afflicted] by the evil consequences of what they earned; and they will not cause failure.1

— Saheeh International

أَوَلَمْ

Do not

awalam

يَعْلَمُوٓا۟

they know

yaʿlamū

أَنَّ

that

anna

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

يَبْسُطُ

extends

yabsuṭu

ٱلرِّزْقَ

the provision

l-riz'qa

لِمَن

for whom

liman

يَشَآءُ

He wills

yashāu

وَيَقْدِرُ ۚ

and restricts

wayaqdiru

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

فِى

in

ذَٰلِكَ

that

dhālika

لَـَٔايَـٰتٍۢ

surely (are) signs

laāyātin

لِّقَوْمٍۢ

for a people

liqawmin

يُؤْمِنُونَ

who believe

yu'minūna

٥٢

Do they not know that Allāh extends provision for whom He wills and restricts [it]? Indeed in that are signs for a people who believe.

— Saheeh International

۞ قُلْ

Say

qul

يَـٰعِبَادِىَ

O My slaves

yāʿibādiya

ٱلَّذِينَ

Those who

alladhīna

أَسْرَفُوا۟

have transgressed

asrafū

عَلَىٰٓ

against

ʿalā

أَنفُسِهِمْ

themselves

anfusihim

لَا

(do) not

تَقْنَطُوا۟

despair

taqnaṭū

مِن

of

min

رَّحْمَةِ

(the) Mercy

raḥmati

ٱللَّهِ ۚ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

يَغْفِرُ

forgives

yaghfiru

ٱلذُّنُوبَ

the sins

l-dhunūba

جَمِيعًا ۚ

all

jamīʿan

إِنَّهُۥ

Indeed He

innahu

هُوَ

He

huwa

ٱلْغَفُورُ

(is) the Oft-Forgiving

l-ghafūru

ٱلرَّحِيمُ

the Most Merciful

l-raḥīmu

٥٣

Say, "O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allāh. Indeed, Allāh forgives all sins.1 Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful."

— Saheeh International

وَأَنِيبُوٓا۟

And turn

wa-anībū

إِلَىٰ

to

ilā

رَبِّكُمْ

your Lord

rabbikum

وَأَسْلِمُوا۟

and submit

wa-aslimū

لَهُۥ

to Him

lahu

مِن

before

min

قَبْلِ

before

qabli

أَن

[that]

an

يَأْتِيَكُمُ

comes to you

yatiyakumu

ٱلْعَذَابُ

the punishment

l-ʿadhābu

ثُمَّ

then

thumma

لَا

not

تُنصَرُونَ

you will be helped

tunṣarūna

٥٤

And return [in repentance] to your Lord and submit to Him before the punishment comes upon you; then you will not be helped.

— Saheeh International

وَٱتَّبِعُوٓا۟

And follow

wa-ittabiʿū

أَحْسَنَ

(the) best

aḥsana

مَآ

(of) what

أُنزِلَ

is revealed

unzila

إِلَيْكُم

to you

ilaykum

مِّن

from

min

رَّبِّكُم

your Lord

rabbikum

مِّن

before

min

قَبْلِ

before

qabli

أَن

[that]

an

يَأْتِيَكُمُ

comes to you

yatiyakumu

ٱلْعَذَابُ

the punishment

l-ʿadhābu

بَغْتَةًۭ

suddenly

baghtatan

وَأَنتُمْ

while you

wa-antum

لَا

(do) not

تَشْعُرُونَ

perceive

tashʿurūna

٥٥

And follow the best of what was revealed to you from your Lord [i.e., the Qur’ān] before the punishment comes upon you suddenly while you do not perceive,

— Saheeh International

أَن

Lest

an

تَقُولَ

should say

taqūla

نَفْسٌۭ

a soul

nafsun

يَـٰحَسْرَتَىٰ

Oh! My regret

yāḥasratā

عَلَىٰ

over

ʿalā

مَا

what

فَرَّطتُ

I neglected

farraṭtu

فِى

in

جَنۢبِ

regard (to)

janbi

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

وَإِن

and that

wa-in

كُنتُ

I was

kuntu

لَمِنَ

surely, among

lamina

ٱلسَّـٰخِرِينَ

the mockers

l-sākhirīna

٥٦

Lest a soul should say,1 "Oh, [how great is] my regret over what I neglected in regard to Allāh and that I was among the mockers."

— Saheeh International
