ٱصْبِرْ Be patient iṣ'bir over ʿalā what mā they say yaqūlūna and remember wa-udh'kur Our slave ʿabdanā Dawood dāwūda the possessor of strength dhā the possessor of strength l-aydi Indeed, he (was) innahu repeatedly turning awwābun
Be patient over what they say and remember Our servant, David, the possessor of strength; indeed, he was one who repeatedly turned back [to Allāh].
إِنَّا Indeed, We innā subjected sakharnā the mountains l-jibāla with him maʿahu glorifying yusabbiḥ'na in the evening bil-ʿashiyi and [the] sunrise wal-ish'rāqi
Indeed, We subjected the mountains [to praise] with him, exalting [Allāh] in the [late] afternoon and [after] sunrise.
وَٱلطَّيْرَ And the birds wal-ṭayra assembled maḥshūratan all kullun with him lahu repeatedly turning awwābun
And the birds were assembled, all with him repeating [praises].
وَشَدَدْنَا And We strengthened washadadnā his kingdom mul'kahu and We gave him waātaynāhu [the] wisdom l-ḥik'mata and decisive wafaṣla speech l-khiṭābi
And We strengthened his kingdom and gave him wisdom and discernment in speech.
۞ وَهَلْ And has (there) wahal come to you atāka (the) news naba-u (of) the litigants l-khaṣmi when idh they climbed over the wall tasawwarū (of) the chamber l-miḥ'rāba
And has there come to you the news of the adversaries, when they climbed over the wall of [his] prayer chamber -
إِذْ When idh they entered dakhalū upon ʿalā Dawood dāwūda and he was afraid fafaziʿa of them min'hum they said qālū (Do) not lā fear takhaf (We are) two litigants khaṣmāni has wronged baghā one of us baʿḍunā to ʿalā another baʿḍin so judge fa-uḥ'kum between us baynanā in truth bil-ḥaqi and (do) not walā be unjust tush'ṭiṭ and guide us wa-ih'dinā to ilā an even sawāi [the] path l-ṣirāṭi
When they entered upon David and he was alarmed by them? They said, "Fear not. [We are] two adversaries, one of whom has wronged the other, so judge between us with truth and do not exceed [it] and guide us to the sound path.
إِنَّ Indeed inna this hādhā (is) my brother akhī he has lahu ninety-nine tis'ʿun ninety-nine watis'ʿūna ewe(s) naʿjatan while I have waliya ewe naʿjatun one wāḥidatun so he said faqāla Entrust her to me akfil'nīhā and he overpowered me waʿazzanī in fī [the] speech l-khiṭābi
Indeed this, my brother, has ninety-nine ewes, and I have one ewe; so he said, 'Entrust her to me,' and he overpowered me in speech."
قَالَ He said qāla Certainly laqad he has wronged you ẓalamaka by demanding bisuāli your ewe naʿjatika to ilā his ewes niʿājihi And indeed wa-inna many kathīran of mina the partners l-khulaṭāi certainly oppress layabghī some of them baʿḍuhum [on] ʿalā another baʿḍin except illā those who alladhīna believe āmanū and do waʿamilū righteous deeds l-ṣāliḥāti and few waqalīlun (are) they mā (are) they hum And became certain waẓanna Dawood dāwūdu that annamā We (had) tried him fatannāhu and he asked forgiveness fa-is'taghfara (of) his Lord rabbahu and fell down wakharra bowing rākiʿan and turned in repentance wa-anāba
[David] said, "He has certainly wronged you in demanding your ewe [in addition] to his ewes. And indeed, many associates oppress one another, except for those who believe and do righteous deeds - and few are they." And David became certain that We had tried him, and he asked forgiveness of his Lord1 and fell down bowing [in prostration] and turned in repentance [to Allāh].
فَغَفَرْنَا So We forgave faghafarnā for him lahu that dhālika And indeed wa-inna for him lahu with Us ʿindanā surely is a near access lazul'fā and a good waḥus'na place of return maābin
So We forgave him that; and indeed, for him is nearness to Us and a good place of return.
يَـٰدَاوُۥدُ O Dawood yādāwūdu Indeed, We innā [We] have made you jaʿalnāka a vicegerent khalīfatan in fī the earth l-arḍi so judge fa-uḥ'kum between bayna [the] men l-nāsi in truth bil-ḥaqi and (do) not walā follow tattabiʿi the desire l-hawā for it will lead you astray fayuḍillaka from ʿan (the) way sabīli (of) Allah l-lahi Indeed inna those who alladhīna go astray yaḍillūna from ʿan (the) way sabīli (of) Allah l-lahi for them lahum (is) a punishment ʿadhābun severe shadīdun because bimā they forgot nasū (the) Day yawma (of) Account l-ḥisābi
[We said], "O David, indeed We have made you a successor upon the earth, so judge between the people in truth and do not follow [your own] desire, as it will lead you astray from the way of Allāh." Indeed, those who go astray from the way of Allāh will have a severe punishment for having forgotten the Day of Account.
