ص
صٓ ۚ Saad sad By the Quran wal-qur'āni full (of) reminder dhī full (of) reminder l-dhik'ri
Ṣād.1 By the Qur’ān containing reminder...2
بَلِ Nay bali those who alladhīna disbelieve kafarū (are) in fī self-glory ʿizzatin and opposition washiqāqin
But those who disbelieve are in pride and dissension.
كَمْ How many kam We destroyed ahlaknā before them min before them qablihim of min a generation qarnin then they called out fanādaw when there (was) no longer walāta time ḥīna (for) escape manāṣin
How many a generation have We destroyed before them, and they [then] called out; but it was not a time for escape.
وَعَجِبُوٓا۟ And they wonder waʿajibū that an has come to them jāahum a warner mundhirun from themselves min'hum And said waqāla the disbelievers l-kāfirūna This hādhā (is) a magician sāḥirun a liar kadhābun
And they wonder that there has come to them a warner [i.e., Prophet Muḥammad (ﷺ)] from among themselves. And the disbelievers say, "This is a magician and a liar.
أَجَعَلَ Has he made ajaʿala the gods l-ālihata (into) one god ilāhan (into) one god wāḥidan Indeed inna this hādhā (is) certainly a thing lashayon curious ʿujābun
Has he made the gods [only] one God? Indeed, this is a curious thing."
وَٱنطَلَقَ And went forth wa-inṭalaqa the chiefs l-mala-u among them min'hum that ani Continue im'shū and be patient wa-iṣ'birū over ʿalā your gods ālihatikum Indeed inna this hādhā (is) certainly a thing lashayon intended yurādu
And the eminent among them went forth, [saying], "Continue, and be patient over [the defense of] your gods. Indeed, this is a thing intended.1
مَا Not mā we heard samiʿ'nā of this bihādhā in fī the religion l-milati the last l-ākhirati Not in (is) this hādhā but illā a fabrication ikh'tilāqun
We have not heard of this in the latest religion.1 This is not but a fabrication.
أَءُنزِلَ Has been revealed a-unzila to him ʿalayhi the Message l-dhik'ru from min among us bayninā Nay bal They hum (are) in fī doubt shakkin about min My Message dhik'rī Nay bal not yet lammā they have tasted yadhūqū My punishment ʿadhābi
Has the message been revealed to him out of [all of] us?" Rather, they are in doubt about My message. Rather, they have not yet tasted My punishment.
أَمْ Or am have they ʿindahum (the) treasures khazāinu (of the) Mercy raḥmati (of) your Lord rabbika the All-Mighty l-ʿazīzi the Bestower l-wahābi
Or do they have the depositories of the mercy of your Lord, the Exalted in Might, the Bestower?1
أَمْ Or am for them lahum (is the) dominion mul'ku (of) the heavens l-samāwāti and the earth wal-arḍi and whatever wamā (is) between them baynahumā Then let them ascend falyartaqū by fī the means l-asbābi
Or is theirs the dominion of the heavens and the earth and what is between them? Then let them ascend through [any] ways of access.1
جُندٌۭ Soldiers jundun there mā there hunālika (they will be) defeated mahzūmun among mina the companies l-aḥzābi
[They are but] soldiers [who will be] defeated there among the companies [of disbelievers].
كَذَّبَتْ Denied kadhabat before them qablahum (the) people qawmu (of) Nuh nūḥin and Aad waʿādun and Firaun wafir'ʿawnu (the) owner dhū (of) the stakes l-awtādi
The people of Noah denied before them, and [the tribe of] ʿAad and Pharaoh, the owner of stakes,1
وَثَمُودُ And Thamud wathamūdu and (the) people waqawmu (of) Lut lūṭin and (the) companions wa-aṣḥābu (of) the wood al'aykati Those ulāika (were) the companies l-aḥzābu
And [the tribe of] Thamūd and the people of Lot and the companions of the thicket [i.e., people of Madyan]. Those are the companies.1
إِن Not in all (of them) kullun but illā denied kadhaba the Messengers l-rusula so (was) just faḥaqqa My penalty ʿiqābi
Each of them denied the messengers, so My penalty was justified.
وَمَا And not wamā await yanẓuru these hāulāi but illā a shout ṣayḥatan one wāḥidatan not mā for it lahā any min delay fawāqin
And these [disbelievers] await not but one blast [of the Horn]; for it there will be no delay.1
وَقَالُوا۟ And they say waqālū Our Lord rabbanā Hasten ʿajjil for us lanā our share qiṭṭanā before qabla (the) Day yawmi (of) the Account l-ḥisābi
And they say, "Our Lord, hasten for us our share [of the punishment] before the Day of Account."
