۞ وَمَآ And not wamā We sent down anzalnā upon ʿalā his people qawmihi after him min after him baʿdihi any min host jundin from mina the heaven l-samāi and not wamā were We kunnā (to) send down munzilīna
And We did not send down upon his people after him any soldiers from the heaven, nor would We have done so.
إِن Not in it was kānat but illā a shout ṣayḥatan one wāḥidatan then behold fa-idhā They hum (were) extinguished khāmidūna
It was not but one shout,1 and immediately they were extinguished.
يَـٰحَسْرَةً Alas yāḥasratan for ʿalā the servants l-ʿibādi Not mā came to them yatīhim any min Messenger rasūlin but illā they did kānū mock at him bihi mock at him yastahziūna
How regretful for the servants. There did not come to them any messenger except that they used to ridicule him.
أَلَمْ Do not alam they see yaraw how many kam We destroyed ahlaknā before them qablahum of mina the generations l-qurūni That they annahum to them ilayhim will not return lā will not return yarjiʿūna
Have they not considered how many generations We destroyed before them - that they to them1 will not return?
وَإِن And surely wa-in all kullun then lammā together jamīʿun before Us ladaynā (will be) brought muḥ'ḍarūna
And indeed, all of them will yet be brought present before Us.
وَءَايَةٌۭ And a Sign waāyatun for them lahumu (is) the earth l-arḍu dead l-maytatu We give it life aḥyaynāhā and We bring forth wa-akhrajnā from it min'hā grain ḥabban and from it famin'hu they eat yakulūna
And a sign for them is the dead earth. We have brought it to life and brought forth from it grain, and from it they eat.
وَجَعَلْنَا And We placed wajaʿalnā therein fīhā gardens jannātin of min date-palms nakhīlin and grapevines wa-aʿnābin and We caused to gush forth wafajjarnā in it fīhā of mina the springs l-ʿuyūni
And We placed therein gardens of palm trees and grapevines and caused to burst forth therefrom some springs -
لِيَأْكُلُوا۟ That they may eat liyakulū of min its fruit thamarihi And not wamā made it ʿamilathu their hands aydīhim So will not afalā they be grateful yashkurūna
That they may eat of His fruit.1 And their hands have not produced it,2 so will they not be grateful?
سُبْحَـٰنَ Glory be sub'ḥāna (to) the One Who alladhī created khalaqa (in) pairs l-azwāja all kullahā of what mimmā grows tunbitu the earth l-arḍu and of wamin themselves anfusihim and of what wamimmā not lā they know yaʿlamūna
Exalted is He who created all pairs1 - from what the earth grows and from themselves and from that which they do not know.
وَءَايَةٌۭ And a Sign waāyatun for them lahumu (is) the night al-laylu We withdraw naslakhu from it min'hu the day l-nahāra Then behold fa-idhā They hum (are) those in darkness muẓ'limūna
And a sign for them is the night. We remove1 from it the [light of] day, so they are [left] in darkness.
وَٱلشَّمْسُ And the sun wal-shamsu runs tajrī to a term appointed limus'taqarrin for it lahā That dhālika (is the) Decree taqdīru (of) the All-Mighty l-ʿazīzi the All-Knowing l-ʿalīmi
And the sun runs [on course] toward its stopping point. That is the determination of the Exalted in Might, the Knowing.
وَٱلْقَمَرَ And the moon wal-qamara We have ordained for it qaddarnāhu phases manāzila until ḥattā it returns ʿāda like the date stalk kal-ʿur'jūni the old l-qadīmi
And the moon - We have determined for it phases, until it returns [appearing] like the old date stalk.
لَا Not lā the sun l-shamsu is permitted yanbaghī for it lahā that an it overtakes tud'rika the moon l-qamara and not walā the night al-laylu (can) outstrip sābiqu the day l-nahāri but all wakullun in fī an orbit falakin they are floating yasbaḥūna
It is not allowable [i.e., possible] for the sun to reach the moon, nor does the night overtake the day, but each, in an orbit, is swimming.
