وَٱضْرِبْ And set forth wa-iḍ'rib to them lahum an example mathalan (of the) companions aṣḥāba (of) the city l-qaryati when idh came to it jāahā the Messengers l-mur'salūna
And present to them an example: the people of the city, when the messengers came to it -
إِذْ When idh We sent arsalnā to them ilayhimu two (Messengers) ith'nayni but they denied both of them fakadhabūhumā so We strengthened them faʿazzaznā with a third bithālithin and they said faqālū Indeed, We innā to you ilaykum (are) Messengers mur'salūna
When We sent to them two but they denied them, so We strengthened [them] with a third, and they said, "Indeed, we are messengers to you."
قَالُوا۟ They said qālū Not mā you antum (are) but illā human beings basharun like us mith'lunā and not wamā has revealed anzala the Most Gracious l-raḥmānu any min thing shayin Not in you antum (are) but illā lying takdhibūna
They said, "You are not but human beings like us, and the Most Merciful has not revealed a thing. You are only telling lies."
قَالُوا۟ They said qālū Our Lord rabbunā knows yaʿlamu that we innā to you ilaykum (are) surely Messengers lamur'salūna
They said, "Our Lord knows that we are messengers to you,
وَمَا And not wamā (is) on us ʿalaynā except illā the conveyance l-balāghu clear l-mubīnu
And we are not responsible except for clear notification."
قَالُوٓا۟ They said qālū Indeed, we innā [we] see an evil omen taṭayyarnā from you bikum If la-in not lam you desist tantahū surely, we will stone you lanarjumannakum and surely will touch you walayamassannakum from us minnā a punishment ʿadhābun painful alīmun
They said, "Indeed, we consider you a bad omen. If you do not desist, we will surely stone you, and there will surely touch you, from us, a painful punishment."
قَالُوا۟ They said qālū Your evil omen ṭāirukum (be) with you maʿakum Is it because a-in you are admonished dhukkir'tum Nay bal you antum (are) a people qawmun transgressing mus'rifūna
They said, "Your omen [i.e., fate] is with yourselves. Is it1 because you were reminded? Rather, you are a transgressing people."
وَجَآءَ And came wajāa from min (the) farthest end aqṣā (of) the city l-madīnati a man rajulun running yasʿā He said qāla O my People yāqawmi Follow ittabiʿū the Messengers l-mur'salīna
And there came from the farthest end of the city a man, running. He said, "O my people, follow the messengers.
ٱتَّبِعُوا۟ Follow ittabiʿū (those) who man (do) not lā ask (of) you yasalukum any payment ajran and they wahum (are) rightly guided muh'tadūna
Follow those who do not ask of you [any] payment, and they are [rightly] guided.
وَمَا And what wamā (is) for me liya (that) not lā I worship aʿbudu the One Who alladhī created me faṭaranī and to Whom wa-ilayhi you will be returned tur'jaʿūna
And why should I not worship He who created me and to whom you will be returned?
ءَأَتَّخِذُ Should I take a-attakhidhu besides Him min besides Him dūnihi gods ālihatan If in intends for me yurid'ni the Most Gracious l-raḥmānu any harm biḍurrin not lā will avail tugh'ni [from] me ʿannī their intercession shafāʿatuhum (in) anything shayan and not walā they (can) save me yunqidhūni
Should I take other than Him [false] deities [while], if the Most Merciful intends for me some adversity, their intercession will not avail me at all, nor can they save me?
إِنِّىٓ Indeed, I innī then idhan surely would be in lafī an error ḍalālin clear mubīnin
Indeed, I would then be in manifest error.
إِنِّىٓ Indeed, I innī [I] have believed āmantu in your Lord birabbikum so listen to me fa-is'maʿūni
Indeed, I have believed in your Lord, so listen to me."
قِيلَ It was said qīla Enter ud'khuli Paradise l-janata He said qāla I wish yālayta my people qawmī knew yaʿlamūna
It was said, "Enter Paradise."1 He said, "I wish my people could know
بِمَا Of how bimā has forgiven ghafara me lī my Lord rabbī and placed me wajaʿalanī among mina the honored ones l-muk'ramīna
Of how my Lord has forgiven me and placed me among the honored."
