لِـَٔابَآئِهِمْ ۚ

their forefathers

liābāihim

كَبُرَتْ

Grave (is)

kaburat

كَلِمَةًۭ

the word

kalimatan

تَخْرُجُ

(that) comes out

takhruju

مِنْ

of

min

أَفْوَٰهِهِمْ ۚ

their mouths

afwāhihim

إِن

Not

in

يَقُولُونَ

they say

yaqūlūna

إِلَّا

except

illā

كَذِبًۭا

a lie

kadhiban

٥

They have no knowledge of it,1 nor had their fathers. Grave is the word that comes out of their mouths; they speak not except a lie.

— Saheeh International

فَلَعَلَّكَ

Then perhaps you would (be)

falaʿallaka

بَـٰخِعٌۭ

the one who kills

bākhiʿun

نَّفْسَكَ

yourself

nafsaka

عَلَىٰٓ

over

ʿalā

ءَاثَـٰرِهِمْ

their footsteps

āthārihim

إِن

if

in

لَّمْ

not

lam

يُؤْمِنُوا۟

they believe

yu'minū

بِهَـٰذَا

in this

bihādhā

ٱلْحَدِيثِ

[the] narration

l-ḥadīthi

أَسَفًا

(in) grief

asafan

٦

Then perhaps you would kill yourself through grief over them, [O Muḥammad], if they do not believe in this message, [and] out of sorrow.

— Saheeh International

إِنَّا

Indeed, We

innā

جَعَلْنَا

We have made

jaʿalnā

مَا

what

عَلَى

(is) on

ʿalā

ٱلْأَرْضِ

the earth

l-arḍi

زِينَةًۭ

adornment

zīnatan

لَّهَا

for it

lahā

لِنَبْلُوَهُمْ

that We may test [them]

linabluwahum

أَيُّهُمْ

which of them

ayyuhum

أَحْسَنُ

(is) best

aḥsanu

عَمَلًۭا

(in) deed

ʿamalan

٧

Indeed, We have made that which is on the earth adornment for it that We may test them [as to] which of them is best in deed.

— Saheeh International

وَإِنَّا

And indeed, We

wa-innā

لَجَـٰعِلُونَ

(will) surely make

lajāʿilūna

مَا

what

عَلَيْهَا

(is) on it

ʿalayhā

صَعِيدًۭا

soil

ṣaʿīdan

جُرُزًا

barren

juruzan

٨

And indeed, We will make that which is upon it [into] a barren ground.

— Saheeh International

أَمْ

Or

am

حَسِبْتَ

have you thought

ḥasib'ta

أَنَّ

that

anna

أَصْحَـٰبَ

(the) companions

aṣḥāba

ٱلْكَهْفِ

(of) the cave

l-kahfi

وَٱلرَّقِيمِ

and the inscription

wal-raqīmi

كَانُوا۟

were

kānū

مِنْ

among

min

ءَايَـٰتِنَا

Our Signs

āyātinā

عَجَبًا

a wonder

ʿajaban

٩

Or have you thought that the companions of the cave and the inscription were, among Our signs, a wonder?1

— Saheeh International

إِذْ

When

idh

أَوَى

retreated

awā

ٱلْفِتْيَةُ

the youths

l-fit'yatu

إِلَى

to

ilā

ٱلْكَهْفِ

the cave

l-kahfi

فَقَالُوا۟

and they said

faqālū

رَبَّنَآ

Our Lord

rabbanā

ءَاتِنَا

Grant us

ātinā

مِن

from

min

لَّدُنكَ

Yourself

ladunka

رَحْمَةًۭ

Mercy

raḥmatan

وَهَيِّئْ

and facilitate

wahayyi

لَنَا

for us

lanā

مِنْ

[from]

min

أَمْرِنَا

our affair

amrinā

رَشَدًۭا

(in the) right way

rashadan

١٠

[Mention] when the youths retreated to the cave and said, "Our Lord, grant us from Yourself mercy and prepare for us from our affair right guidance."

— Saheeh International

فَضَرَبْنَا

So We cast

faḍarabnā

عَلَىٰٓ

over

ʿalā

ءَاذَانِهِمْ

their ears

ādhānihim

فِى

in

ٱلْكَهْفِ

the cave

l-kahfi

سِنِينَ

years

sinīna

عَدَدًۭا

a number

ʿadadan

١١

So We cast [a cover of sleep] over their ears within the cave for a number of years.

— Saheeh International

ثُمَّ

Then

thumma

بَعَثْنَـٰهُمْ

We raised them up

baʿathnāhum

لِنَعْلَمَ

that We make evident

linaʿlama

أَىُّ

which

ayyu

ٱلْحِزْبَيْنِ

(of) the two parties

l-ḥiz'bayni

أَحْصَىٰ

best calculated

aḥṣā

لِمَا

for what

limā

لَبِثُوٓا۟

(they had) remained

labithū

أَمَدًۭا

(in) time

amadan

١٢

Then We awakened them that We might show which of the two factions was most precise in calculating what [extent] they had remained in time.

— Saheeh International

نَّحْنُ

We

naḥnu

نَقُصُّ

narrate

naquṣṣu

عَلَيْكَ

to you

ʿalayka

نَبَأَهُم

their story

naba-ahum

بِٱلْحَقِّ ۚ

in truth

bil-ḥaqi

إِنَّهُمْ

Indeed, they (were)

innahum

فِتْيَةٌ

youths

fit'yatun

ءَامَنُوا۟

who believed

āmanū

بِرَبِّهِمْ

in their Lord

birabbihim

وَزِدْنَـٰهُمْ

and We increased them

wazid'nāhum

هُدًۭى

(in) guidance

hudan

١٣

It is We who relate to you, [O Muḥammad], their story in truth. Indeed, they were youths who believed in their Lord, and We increased them in guidance.

— Saheeh International

وَرَبَطْنَا

And We made firm

warabaṭnā

عَلَىٰ

[on]

ʿalā

قُلُوبِهِمْ

their hearts

qulūbihim

إِذْ

when

idh

قَامُوا۟

they stood up

qāmū

فَقَالُوا۟

and said

faqālū

رَبُّنَا

Our Lord

rabbunā

رَبُّ

(is) the Lord

rabbu

ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ

(of) the heavens

l-samāwāti

وَٱلْأَرْضِ

and the earth

wal-arḍi

لَن

Never

lan

نَّدْعُوَا۟

we will invoke

nadʿuwā

مِن

besides Him

min

دُونِهِۦٓ

besides Him

dūnihi

إِلَـٰهًۭا ۖ

any god

ilāhan

لَّقَدْ

Certainly

laqad

قُلْنَآ

we would have said

qul'nā

إِذًۭا

then

idhan

شَطَطًا

an enormity

shaṭaṭan

١٤

And We bound [i.e., made firm] their hearts when they stood up and said, "Our Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth. Never will we invoke besides Him any deity. We would have certainly spoken, then, an excessive transgression.

— Saheeh International

هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ

These

hāulāi

قَوْمُنَا

our people

qawmunā

ٱتَّخَذُوا۟

have taken

ittakhadhū

مِن

besides Him

min

دُونِهِۦٓ

besides Him

dūnihi

ءَالِهَةًۭ ۖ

gods

ālihatan

لَّوْلَا

Why not

lawlā

يَأْتُونَ

they come

yatūna

عَلَيْهِم

to them

ʿalayhim

بِسُلْطَـٰنٍۭ

with an authority

bisul'ṭānin

بَيِّنٍۢ ۖ

clear

bayyinin

فَمَنْ

And who

faman

أَظْلَمُ

(is) more wrong

aẓlamu

مِمَّنِ

than (one) who

mimmani

ٱفْتَرَىٰ

invents

if'tarā

عَلَى

against

ʿalā

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

كَذِبًۭا

a lie

kadhiban

١٥

These, our people, have taken besides Him deities. Why do they not bring for [worship of] them a clear evidence? And who is more unjust than one who invents about Allāh a lie?"

— Saheeh International
