وَإِذَا And when wa-idhā are recited tut'lā to them ʿalayhim Our Verses āyātunā (as) clear proofs bayyinātin said qāla those who alladhīna (do) not lā hope yarjūna (for the) meeting (with) Us liqāanā Bring us i'ti a Quran biqur'ānin other (than) ghayri this hādhā or aw change it baddil'hu Say qul Not mā (it) is yakūnu for me lī that an I change it ubaddilahu of min my own accord til'qāi my own accord nafsī Not in I follow attabiʿu except illā what mā is revealed yūḥā to me ilayya Indeed, I innī [I] fear akhāfu if in I were to disobey ʿaṣaytu my Lord rabbī (the) punishment ʿadhāba (of) a Day yawmin Great ʿaẓīmin
And when Our verses are recited to them as clear evidences, those who do not expect the meeting with Us say, "Bring us a Qur’ān other than this or change it." Say, [O Muḥammad], "It is not for me to change it on my own accord. I only follow what is revealed to me. Indeed I fear, if I should disobey my Lord, the punishment of a tremendous Day."
قُل Say qul If law (had) willed shāa Allah l-lahu not mā I (would) have recited it talawtuhu to you ʿalaykum and not walā He (would) have made it known to you adrākum He (would) have made it known to you bihi Verily faqad I have stayed labith'tu among you fīkum a lifetime ʿumuran before it min before it qablihi Then will not afalā you use reason taʿqilūna
Say, "If Allāh had willed, I would not have recited it to you, nor would He have made it known to you, for I had remained among you a lifetime before it.1 Then will you not reason?"
فَمَنْ So who faman (is) more wrong aẓlamu than he who mimmani invents if'tarā against ʿalā Allah l-lahi a lie kadhiban or aw denies kadhaba His Signs biāyātihi Indeed innahu not lā will succeed yuf'liḥu the criminals l-muj'rimūna
So who is more unjust than he who invents a lie about Allāh or denies His signs? Indeed, the criminals will not succeed.
وَيَعْبُدُونَ And they worship wayaʿbudūna from min other than dūni Allah l-lahi that (which) mā (does) not lā harm them yaḍurruhum and not walā benefit them yanfaʿuhum and they say wayaqūlūna These hāulāi (are) our intercessors shufaʿāunā with ʿinda Allah l-lahi Say qul Do you inform atunabbiūna Allah l-laha of what bimā not lā he knows yaʿlamu in fī the heavens l-samāwāti and not walā in fī the earth l-arḍi Glorified is He sub'ḥānahu and Exalted wataʿālā above what ʿammā they associate (with Him) yush'rikūna
And they worship other than Allāh that which neither harms them nor benefits them, and they say, "These are our intercessors with Allāh." Say, "Do you inform Allāh of something He does not know in the heavens or on the earth?" Exalted is He and high above what they associate with Him.
وَمَا And not wamā was kāna the mankind l-nāsu but illā a community ummatan one wāḥidatan then they differed fa-ikh'talafū And had (it) not been walawlā a word kalimatun (that) preceded sabaqat from min your Lord rabbika surely, it (would) have been judged laquḍiya between them baynahum concerning what fīmā [therein] fīhi they differ yakhtalifūna
And mankind was not but one community [united in religion], but [then] they differed. And if not for a word1 that preceded from your Lord, it would have been judged between them [immediately] concerning that over which they differ.
وَيَقُولُونَ And they say wayaqūlūna Why not lawlā is sent down unzila to him ʿalayhi a Sign āyatun from min his Lord rabbihi So say faqul Only innamā the unseen l-ghaybu (is) for Allah lillahi so wait fa-intaẓirū indeed, I am innī with you maʿakum among mina the ones who wait l-muntaẓirīna
And they say, "Why is a sign not sent down to him from his Lord?" So say, "The unseen is only for Allāh [to administer], so wait; indeed, I am with you among those who wait."
