۞ وَإِذْ And when wa-idh We raised nataqnā the mountain l-jabala above them fawqahum as if it was ka-annahu a canopy ẓullatun and they thought waẓannū that it annahu (would) fall wāqiʿun upon them bihim (We said), "Take khudhū what mā We have given you ātaynākum with strength biquwwatin and remember wa-udh'kurū what mā (is) in it fīhi so that you may laʿallakum fear Allah tattaqūna
And [mention] when We raised the mountain above them as if it was a dark cloud and they were certain that it would fall upon them,1 [and Allāh said], "Take what We have given you with determination and remember what is in it that you might fear Allāh."
وَإِذْ And when wa-idh (was) taken akhadha (by) your Lord rabbuka from min (the) Children banī (of) Adam ādama from min their loins ẓuhūrihim their descendants dhurriyyatahum and made them testify wa-ashhadahum over ʿalā themselves anfusihim Am I not alastu your Lord birabbikum They said qālū Yes balā we have testified shahid'nā Lest an you say taqūlū (on the) Day yawma (of) the Resurrection l-qiyāmati Indeed innā we were kunnā about ʿan this hādhā unaware ghāfilīna
And [mention] when your Lord took from the children of Adam - from their loins - their descendants and made them testify of themselves, [saying to them], "Am I not your Lord?" They said, "Yes, we have testified." [This] - lest you should say on the Day of Resurrection, "Indeed, we were of this unaware."
أَوْ Or aw you say taqūlū Only innamā partners (were) associated (with Allah) ashraka (by) our forefathers ābāunā from min before (us) qablu and we are wakunnā descendants dhurriyyatan from min after them baʿdihim So will You destroy us afatuh'likunā for what bimā did faʿala the falsifiers l-mub'ṭilūna
Or [lest] you say, "It was only that our fathers associated [others in worship] with Allāh before, and we were but descendants after them. Then would You destroy us for what the falsifiers have done?"
وَكَذَٰلِكَ And thus wakadhālika We explain nufaṣṣilu the Verses l-āyāti so that they may walaʿallahum return yarjiʿūna
And thus do We [explain in] detail the verses, and perhaps they will return.1
وَٱتْلُ And recite wa-ut'lu to them ʿalayhim (the) story naba-a (of the) one whom alladhī We gave [him] ātaynāhu Our Verses āyātinā but he detached fa-insalakha [from] them min'hā so followed him fa-atbaʿahu the Shaitaan l-shayṭānu and he became fakāna of mina those gone astray l-ghāwīna
And recite to them, [O Muḥammad], the news of him1 to whom We gave [knowledge of] Our signs, but he detached himself from them; so Satan pursued him, and he became of the deviators.2
وَلَوْ And if walaw We willed shi'nā surely, We (could) have raised him larafaʿnāhu with these bihā [and] but he walākinnahu adhered akhlada to ilā the earth l-arḍi and followed wa-ittabaʿa his (vain) desires hawāhu So his example famathaluhu (is) like (the) example kamathali (of) the dog l-kalbi if in you attack taḥmil [on] him ʿalayhi he lolls out his tongue yalhath or aw if you leave him tatruk'hu he lolls out his tongue yalhath That dhālika (is the) example mathalu (of) the people l-qawmi who alladhīna denied kadhabū [in] Our Signs biāyātinā So relate fa-uq'ṣuṣi the story l-qaṣaṣa so that they may laʿallahum reflect yatafakkarūna
And if We had willed, We could have elevated him thereby,1 but he adhered [instead] to the earth2 and followed his own desire. So his example is like that of the dog: if you chase him, he pants, or if you leave him, he [still] pants. That is the example of the people who denied Our signs.3 So relate the stories that perhaps they will give thought.
سَآءَ Evil sāa (as) an example mathalan (are) the people l-qawmu those who alladhīna denied kadhabū Our Signs biāyātinā and themselves wa-anfusahum they used to kānū wrong yaẓlimūna
How evil an example [is that of] the people who denied Our signs and used to wrong themselves.
مَن Whoever man (is) guided yahdi (by) Allah l-lahu then he fahuwa (is) the guided one l-muh'tadī while whoever waman He lets go astray yuḍ'lil then those fa-ulāika [they] humu (are) the losers l-khāsirūna
Whoever Allāh guides - he is the [rightly] guided; and whoever He sends astray1 - it is those who are the losers.
