وَقَطَّعْنَـٰهُمُ And We divided them waqaṭṭaʿnāhumu (into) two ith'natay (and) ten [i.e. twelve] ʿashrata tribes asbāṭan (as) communities umaman And We inspired wa-awḥaynā to ilā Musa mūsā when idhi asked him for water is'tasqāhu his people qawmuhu [that] ani Strike iḍ'rib with your staff biʿaṣāka the stone l-ḥajara Then gushed forth fa-inbajasat from it min'hu two ith'natā (and) ten [i.e. twelve] ʿashrata springs ʿaynan Certainly qad knew ʿalima each kullu people unāsin their drinking place mashrabahum And We shaded waẓallalnā [on] them ʿalayhimu (with) the clouds l-ghamāma and We sent down wa-anzalnā upon them ʿalayhimu the manna l-mana and the quails wal-salwā Eat kulū from min (the) good things ṭayyibāti which mā We have provided you razaqnākum And not wamā they wronged Us ẓalamūnā but walākin they were kānū (to) themselves anfusahum doing wrong yaẓlimūna
And We divided them into twelve descendant tribes1 [as distinct] nations. And We inspired to Moses when his people implored him for water, "Strike with your staff the stone," and there gushed forth from it twelve springs. Every people [i.e., tribe] knew its watering place. And We shaded them with clouds and sent down upon them manna and quails, [saying], "Eat from the good things with which We have provided you." And they wronged Us not, but they were [only] wronging themselves.
وَإِذْ And when wa-idh it was said qīla to them lahumu Live us'kunū (in) this hādhihi city l-qaryata and eat wakulū from it min'hā wherever ḥaythu you wish shi'tum and say waqūlū Repentance ḥiṭṭatun and enter wa-ud'khulū the gate l-bāba prostrating sujjadan We will forgive naghfir for you lakum your sins khaṭīātikum We will increase (reward) sanazīdu (of) the good-doers l-muḥ'sinīna
And [mention, O Muḥammad], when it was said to them, "Dwell in this city [i.e., Jerusalem] and eat from it wherever you will and say, 'Relieve us of our burdens [i.e., sins],' and enter the gate bowing humbly; We will [then] forgive you your sins. We will increase the doers of good [in goodness and reward]."
فَبَدَّلَ But changed fabaddala those who alladhīna wronged ẓalamū among them min'hum word qawlan other than ghayra (that) which alladhī was said qīla to them lahum So We sent fa-arsalnā upon them ʿalayhim torment rij'zan from mina the sky l-samāi because bimā they were kānū doing wrong yaẓlimūna
But those who wronged among them changed [the words] to a statement other than that which had been said to them. So We sent upon them a punishment from the sky for the wrong that they were doing.
وَسْـَٔلْهُمْ And ask them wasalhum about ʿani the town l-qaryati which allatī was kānat situated ḥāḍirata (by) the sea l-baḥri when idh they transgressed yaʿdūna in fī the (matter of) Sabbath l-sabti when idh came to them tatīhim their fish ḥītānuhum (on the) day yawma (of) their Sabbath sabtihim visibly shurraʿan and (on the) day wayawma not lā they had Sabbath yasbitūna (they did) not lā come to them tatīhim Thus kadhālika We test them nablūhum because bimā they were kānū defiantly disobeying yafsuqūna
And ask them about the town that was by the sea - when they transgressed in [the matter of] the sabbath - when their fish came to them openly on their sabbath day, and the day they had no sabbath they did not come to them. Thus did We give them trial because they were defiantly disobedient.
