وَلَوْ And if walaw that anna (the) People ahla (of) the Book l-kitābi (had) believed āmanū and feared (Allah) wa-ittaqaw surely We (would have) removed lakaffarnā from them ʿanhum their evil (deeds) sayyiātihim and surely We (would have) admitted them wala-adkhalnāhum (to) Gardens jannāti (of) Bliss l-naʿīmi
And if only the People of the Scripture had believed and feared Allāh, We would have removed from them their misdeeds and admitted them to Gardens of Pleasure.
وَلَوْ And if walaw that they annahum had stood firmly aqāmū (by) the Taurat l-tawrāta and the Injeel wal-injīla and what wamā was revealed unzila to them ilayhim from min their Lord rabbihim surely they (would have) eaten la-akalū from min above them fawqihim and from wamin beneath taḥti their feet arjulihim Among them min'hum (is) a community ummatun moderate muq'taṣidatun but many wakathīrun of them min'hum evil sāa (is) what mā they do yaʿmalūna
And if only they had upheld [the law of] the Torah, the Gospel, and what has been revealed to them from their Lord [i.e., the Qur’ān], they would have consumed [provision] from above them and from beneath their feet.1 Among them are a moderate [i.e., acceptable] community, but many of them - evil is that which they do.
۞ يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا O yāayyuhā Messenger l-rasūlu Convey balligh what mā has been revealed unzila to you ilayka from min your Lord rabbika and if wa-in not lam you do tafʿal then not famā you (have) conveyed ballaghta His Message risālatahu And Allah wal-lahu will protect you yaʿṣimuka from mina the people l-nāsi Indeed inna Allah l-laha (does) not lā guide yahdī the people l-qawma the disbelieving l-kāfirīna
O Messenger, announce that which has been revealed to you from your Lord, and if you do not, then you have not conveyed His message. And Allāh will protect you from the people. Indeed, Allāh does not guide the disbelieving people.
قُلْ Say qul O People yāahla (of) the Book l-kitābi You are not lastum on ʿalā anything shayin until ḥattā you stand firmly tuqīmū (by) the Taurat l-tawrāta and the Injeel wal-injīla and what wamā has been revealed unzila to you ilaykum from min your Lord rabbikum And surely increase walayazīdanna many kathīran of them min'hum what mā has been revealed unzila to you ilayka from min your Lord rabbika (in) rebellion ṭugh'yānan and disbelief wakuf'ran So (do) not falā grieve tasa over ʿalā the people l-qawmi the disbelieving l-kāfirīna
Say, "O People of the Scripture, you are [standing] on nothing until you uphold [the law of] the Torah, the Gospel, and what has been revealed to you from your Lord [i.e., the Qur’ān]." And that which has been revealed to you from your Lord will surely increase many of them in transgression and disbelief. So do not grieve over the disbelieving people.
إِنَّ Indeed inna those who alladhīna believed āmanū and those who wa-alladhīna became Jews hādū and the Sabians wal-ṣābiūna and the Christians wal-naṣārā whoever man believed āmana in Allah bil-lahi and the Day wal-yawmi the Last l-ākhiri and did waʿamila good deeds ṣāliḥan then no falā fear khawfun on them ʿalayhim and not walā they hum will grieve yaḥzanūna
Indeed, those who have believed [in Prophet Muḥammad (ﷺ)] and those [before him (ﷺ)] who were Jews or Sabeans or Christians - those [among them] who believed in Allāh and the Last Day and did righteousness - no fear will there be concerning them, nor will they grieve.1
لَقَدْ Certainly laqad We took akhadhnā a Covenant mīthāqa (from the) Children banī (of) Israel is'rāīla and We sent wa-arsalnā to them ilayhim Messengers rusulan Whenever kullamā came to them jāahum any Messenger rasūlun with what bimā not lā desired tahwā their souls anfusuhum a group farīqan they denied kadhabū and a group wafarīqan they kill yaqtulūna
We had already taken the covenant of the Children of Israel and had sent to them messengers. Whenever there came to them a messenger with what their souls did not desire, a party [of messengers] they denied, and another party they killed.
