سَمَّـٰعُونَ Listeners sammāʿūna to [the] falsehood lil'kadhibi devourers akkālūna of the forbidden lilssuḥ'ti So if fa-in they come to you jāūka then judge fa-uḥ'kum between them baynahum or aw turn away aʿriḍ from them ʿanhum And if wa-in you turn away tuʿ'riḍ from them ʿanhum then never falan will they harm you yaḍurrūka (in) anything shayan And if wa-in you judge ḥakamta then judge fa-uḥ'kum between them baynahum with [the] justice bil-qis'ṭi Indeed inna Allah l-laha loves yuḥibbu the ones who are just l-muq'siṭīna
[They are] avid listeners to falsehood, devourers of [what is] unlawful. So if they come to you, [O Muḥammad], judge between them or turn away from them. And if you turn away from them - never will they harm you at all. And if you judge, judge between them with justice. Indeed, Allāh loves those who act justly.
وَكَيْفَ But how can wakayfa they appoint you a judge yuḥakkimūnaka while they (have) with them waʿindahumu the Taurat l-tawrātu in it fīhā (is the) Command ḥuk'mu (of) Allah l-lahi Then thumma they turn away yatawallawna from min after baʿdi that dhālika and not wamā those ulāika (are) the believers bil-mu'minīna
But how is it that they come to you for judgement while they have the Torah, in which is the judgement of Allāh? Then they turn away, [even] after that; but those are not [in fact] believers.
إِنَّآ Indeed innā We revealed anzalnā the Taurat l-tawrāta in it fīhā (was) Guidance hudan and light wanūrun judged yaḥkumu by it bihā the Prophets l-nabiyūna those who alladhīna had submitted (to Allah) aslamū for those who lilladhīna were Jews hādū and the Rabbis wal-rabāniyūna and the scholars wal-aḥbāru with what bimā they were entrusted us'tuḥ'fiẓū of min (the) Book kitābi (of) Allah l-lahi and they were wakānū to it ʿalayhi witnesses shuhadāa So (do) not falā fear takhshawū the people l-nāsa but fear Me wa-ikh'shawni and (do) not walā sell tashtarū My Verses biāyātī (for) a price thamanan little qalīlan And whoever waman (does) not lam judge yaḥkum by what bimā has revealed anzala Allah l-lahu then those fa-ulāika [they] humu (are) the disbelievers l-kāfirūna
Indeed, We sent down the Torah, in which was guidance and light. The prophets who submitted [to Allāh] judged by it for the Jews, as did the rabbis and scholars by that with which they were entrusted of the Scripture of Allāh, and they were witnesses thereto. So do not fear the people but fear Me, and do not exchange My verses for a small price [i.e., worldly gain]. And whoever does not judge by what Allāh has revealed - then it is those who are the disbelievers.
وَكَتَبْنَا And We ordained wakatabnā for them ʿalayhim in it fīhā that anna the life l-nafsa for the life bil-nafsi and the eye wal-ʿayna for the eye bil-ʿayni and the nose wal-anfa for the nose bil-anfi and the ear wal-udhuna for the ear bil-udhuni and the tooth wal-sina for the tooth bil-sini and (for) wounds wal-jurūḥa (is) retribution qiṣāṣun But whoever faman gives charity taṣaddaqa with it bihi then it is fahuwa an expiation kaffāratun for him lahu And whoever waman (does) not lam judge yaḥkum by what bimā has revealed anzala Allah l-lahu then those fa-ulāika [they] humu (are) the wrongdoers l-ẓālimūna
And We ordained for them therein a life for a life, an eye for an eye, a nose for a nose, an ear for an ear, a tooth for a tooth, and for wounds is legal retribution. But whoever gives [up his right as] charity, it is an expiation for him. And whoever does not judge by what Allāh has revealed - then it is those who are the wrongdoers [i.e., the unjust].
