قَالُوا۟

They said

qālū

ٱدْعُ

Pray

ud'ʿu

لَنَا

for us

lanā

رَبَّكَ

(to) your Lord

rabbaka

يُبَيِّن

to make clear

yubayyin

لَّنَا

to us

lanā

مَا

what

هِىَ

it (is)

hiya

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱلْبَقَرَ

[the] cows

l-baqara

تَشَـٰبَهَ

look alike

tashābaha

عَلَيْنَا

to us

ʿalaynā

وَإِنَّآ

And indeed we

wa-innā

إِن

if

in

شَآءَ

wills

shāa

ٱللَّهُ

Allah

l-lahu

لَمُهْتَدُونَ

(will) surely be those who are guided

lamuh'tadūna

٧٠

They said, "Call upon your Lord to make clear to us what it is. Indeed, [all] cows look alike to us. And indeed we, if Allāh wills, will be guided."

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

إِنَّهُۥ

Indeed, He

innahu

يَقُولُ

says

yaqūlu

إِنَّهَا

[Indeed] it

innahā

بَقَرَةٌۭ

(is) a cow

baqaratun

لَّا

not

ذَلُولٌۭ

trained

dhalūlun

تُثِيرُ

to plough

tuthīru

ٱلْأَرْضَ

the earth

l-arḍa

وَلَا

and not

walā

تَسْقِى

water

tasqī

ٱلْحَرْثَ

the field

l-ḥartha

مُسَلَّمَةٌۭ

sound

musallamatun

لَّا

no

شِيَةَ

blemish

shiyata

فِيهَا ۚ

in it

fīhā

قَالُوا۟

They said

qālū

ٱلْـَٔـٰنَ

Now

l-āna

جِئْتَ

you have come

ji'ta

بِٱلْحَقِّ ۚ

with the truth

bil-ḥaqi

فَذَبَحُوهَا

So they slaughtered it

fadhabaḥūhā

وَمَا

and not

wamā

كَادُوا۟

they were near

kādū

يَفْعَلُونَ

(to) doing (it)

yafʿalūna

٧١

He said, "He says, 'It is a cow neither trained to plow the earth nor to irrigate the field, one free from fault with no spot upon her.'" They said, "Now you have come with the truth." So they slaughtered her, but they could hardly do it.

— Saheeh International

وَإِذْ

And when

wa-idh

قَتَلْتُمْ

you killed

qataltum

نَفْسًۭا

a man

nafsan

فَٱدَّٰرَْٰٔتُمْ

then you disputed

fa-iddāratum

فِيهَا ۖ

concerning it

fīhā

وَٱللَّهُ

but Allah

wal-lahu

مُخْرِجٌۭ

(is) the One Who brought forth

mukh'rijun

مَّا

what

كُنتُمْ

you were

kuntum

تَكْتُمُونَ

concealing

taktumūna

٧٢

And [recall] when you slew a man and disputed1 over it, but Allāh was to bring out that which you were concealing.

— Saheeh International

فَقُلْنَا

So We said

faqul'nā

ٱضْرِبُوهُ

Strike him

iḍ'ribūhu

بِبَعْضِهَا ۚ

with a part of it

bibaʿḍihā

كَذَٰلِكَ

Like this

kadhālika

يُحْىِ

revives

yuḥ'yī

ٱللَّهُ

Allah

l-lahu

ٱلْمَوْتَىٰ

the dead

l-mawtā

وَيُرِيكُمْ

and shows you

wayurīkum

ءَايَـٰتِهِۦ

His Signs

āyātihi

لَعَلَّكُمْ

perhaps you may

laʿallakum

تَعْقِلُونَ

use your intellect

taʿqilūna

٧٣

So We said, "Strike him [i.e., the slain man] with part of it."1 Thus does Allāh bring the dead to life, and He shows you His signs that you might reason.

— Saheeh International

ثُمَّ

Then

thumma

قَسَتْ

hardened

qasat

قُلُوبُكُم

your hearts

qulūbukum

مِّنۢ

from

min

بَعْدِ

after

baʿdi

ذَٰلِكَ

that

dhālika

فَهِىَ

so they

fahiya

كَٱلْحِجَارَةِ

(became) like [the] stones

kal-ḥijārati

أَوْ

or

aw

أَشَدُّ

stronger

ashaddu

قَسْوَةًۭ ۚ

(in) hardness

qaswatan

وَإِنَّ

And indeed

wa-inna

مِنَ

from

mina

ٱلْحِجَارَةِ

the stones

l-ḥijārati

لَمَا

certainly (there are some) which

lamā

يَتَفَجَّرُ

gush forth

yatafajjaru

مِنْهُ

from it

min'hu

ٱلْأَنْهَـٰرُ ۚ

[the] rivers

l-anhāru

وَإِنَّ

and indeed

wa-inna

مِنْهَا

from them

min'hā

لَمَا

certainly (there are some) which

lamā

يَشَّقَّقُ

split

yashaqqaqu

فَيَخْرُجُ

so comes out

fayakhruju

مِنْهُ

from it

min'hu

ٱلْمَآءُ ۚ

[the] water

l-māu

وَإِنَّ

and indeed

wa-inna

مِنْهَا

from them

min'hā

لَمَا

certainly (there are some) which

lamā

يَهْبِطُ

fall down

yahbiṭu

مِنْ

from

min

خَشْيَةِ

fear

khashyati

ٱللَّهِ ۗ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

وَمَا

And not

wamā

ٱللَّهُ

(is) Allah

l-lahu

بِغَـٰفِلٍ

unaware

bighāfilin

عَمَّا

of what

ʿammā

تَعْمَلُونَ

you do

taʿmalūna

٧٤

Then your hearts became hardened after that, being like stones or even harder. For indeed, there are stones from which rivers burst forth, and there are some of them that split open and water comes out, and there are some of them that fall down for fear of Allāh. And Allāh is not unaware of what you do.

— Saheeh International

۞ أَفَتَطْمَعُونَ

Do you hope

afataṭmaʿūna

أَن

that

an

يُؤْمِنُوا۟

they will believe

yu'minū

لَكُمْ

[for] you

lakum

وَقَدْ

while indeed

waqad

كَانَ

(there) has been

kāna

فَرِيقٌۭ

a party

farīqun

مِّنْهُمْ

of them

min'hum

يَسْمَعُونَ

(who used to) hear

yasmaʿūna

كَلَـٰمَ

(the) words

kalāma

ٱللَّهِ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

ثُمَّ

then

thumma

يُحَرِّفُونَهُۥ

they distort it

yuḥarrifūnahu

مِنۢ

from

min

بَعْدِ

after

baʿdi

مَا

[what]

عَقَلُوهُ

they understood it

ʿaqalūhu

وَهُمْ

while they

wahum

يَعْلَمُونَ

know

yaʿlamūna

٧٥

Do you covet [the hope, O believers], that they would believe for you while a party of them used to hear the words of Allāh and then distort it [i.e., the Torah] after they had understood it while they were knowing?

— Saheeh International

وَإِذَا

And when

wa-idhā

لَقُوا۟

they meet

laqū

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

ءَامَنُوا۟

believe[d]

āmanū

قَالُوٓا۟

they say

qālū

ءَامَنَّا

We have believed

āmannā

وَإِذَا

But when

wa-idhā

خَلَا

meet in private

khalā

بَعْضُهُمْ

some of them

baʿḍuhum

إِلَىٰ

with

ilā

بَعْضٍۢ

some (others)

baʿḍin

قَالُوٓا۟

they say

qālū

أَتُحَدِّثُونَهُم

Do you tell them

atuḥaddithūnahum

بِمَا

what

bimā

فَتَحَ

has

fataḥa

ٱللَّهُ

Allah

l-lahu

عَلَيْكُمْ

to you

ʿalaykum

لِيُحَآجُّوكُم

so that they argue with you

liyuḥājjūkum

بِهِۦ

therewith

bihi

عِندَ

before

ʿinda

رَبِّكُمْ ۚ

your Lord

rabbikum

أَفَلَا

Then do (you) not

afalā

تَعْقِلُونَ

understand

taʿqilūna

٧٦

And when they meet those who believe, they say, "We have believed"; but when they are alone with one another, they say, "Do you talk to them about what Allāh has revealed to you so they can argue with you about it before your Lord?" Then will you not reason?

— Saheeh International
