وَإِذْ

And when

wa-idh

قَالَ

said

qāla

رَبُّكَ

your Lord

rabbuka

لِلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةِ

to the angels

lil'malāikati

إِنِّى

Indeed, I (am)

innī

جَاعِلٌۭ

going to place

jāʿilun

فِى

in

ٱلْأَرْضِ

the earth

l-arḍi

خَلِيفَةًۭ ۖ

a vicegerent

khalīfatan

قَالُوٓا۟

they said

qālū

أَتَجْعَلُ

Will You place

atajʿalu

فِيهَا

in it

fīhā

مَن

(one) who

man

يُفْسِدُ

will spread corruption

yuf'sidu

فِيهَا

in it

fīhā

وَيَسْفِكُ

and will shed

wayasfiku

ٱلدِّمَآءَ

[the] blood[s]

l-dimāa

وَنَحْنُ

while we

wanaḥnu

نُسَبِّحُ

[we] glorify (You)

nusabbiḥu

بِحَمْدِكَ

with Your praises

biḥamdika

وَنُقَدِّسُ

and we sanctify

wanuqaddisu

لَكَ ۖ

[to] You

laka

قَالَ

He said

qāla

إِنِّىٓ

Indeed, I

innī

أَعْلَمُ

[I] know

aʿlamu

مَا

what

لَا

not

تَعْلَمُونَ

you know

taʿlamūna

٣٠

And [mention, O Muḥammad], when your Lord said to the angels, "Indeed, I will make upon the earth a successive authority."1 They said, "Will You place upon it one who causes corruption therein and sheds blood, while we exalt You with praise and declare Your perfection?"2 He [Allāh] said, "Indeed, I know that which you do not know."

— Saheeh International

وَعَلَّمَ

And He taught

waʿallama

ءَادَمَ

Adam

ādama

ٱلْأَسْمَآءَ

the names

l-asmāa

كُلَّهَا

all of them

kullahā

ثُمَّ

Then

thumma

عَرَضَهُمْ

He displayed them

ʿaraḍahum

عَلَى

to

ʿalā

ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةِ

the angels

l-malāikati

فَقَالَ

then He said

faqāla

أَنۢبِـُٔونِى

Inform Me

anbiūnī

بِأَسْمَآءِ

of (the) names

bi-asmāi

هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ

(of) these

hāulāi

إِن

if

in

كُنتُمْ

you are

kuntum

صَـٰدِقِينَ

truthful

ṣādiqīna

٣١

And He taught Adam the names - all of them. Then He showed them to the angels and said, "Inform Me of the names of these, if you are truthful."

— Saheeh International

قَالُوا۟

They said

qālū

سُبْحَـٰنَكَ

Glory be to You

sub'ḥānaka

لَا

No

عِلْمَ

knowledge

ʿil'ma

لَنَآ

(is) for us

lanā

إِلَّا

except

illā

مَا

what

عَلَّمْتَنَآ ۖ

You have taught us

ʿallamtanā

إِنَّكَ

Indeed You

innaka

أَنتَ

You

anta

ٱلْعَلِيمُ

(are) the All-Knowing

l-ʿalīmu

ٱلْحَكِيمُ

the All-Wise

l-ḥakīmu

٣٢

They said, "Exalted are You; we have no knowledge except what You have taught us. Indeed, it is You who is the Knowing,1 the Wise."2

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

يَـٰٓـَٔادَمُ

O Adam

yāādamu

أَنۢبِئْهُم

Inform them

anbi'hum

بِأَسْمَآئِهِمْ ۖ

of their names

bi-asmāihim

فَلَمَّآ

And when

falammā

أَنۢبَأَهُم

he had informed them

anba-ahum

بِأَسْمَآئِهِمْ

of their names

bi-asmāihim

قَالَ

He said

qāla

أَلَمْ

Did not

alam

أَقُل

I say

aqul

لَّكُمْ

to you

lakum

إِنِّىٓ

Indeed, I

innī

أَعْلَمُ

[I] know

aʿlamu

غَيْبَ

(the) unseen

ghayba

ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ

(of) the heavens

l-samāwāti

وَٱلْأَرْضِ

and the earth

wal-arḍi

وَأَعْلَمُ

and I know

wa-aʿlamu

مَا

what

تُبْدُونَ

you reveal

tub'dūna

وَمَا

and what

wamā

كُنتُمْ

you [were]

kuntum

تَكْتُمُونَ

conceal

taktumūna

٣٣

He said, "O Adam, inform them of their names." And when he had informed them of their names, He said, "Did I not tell you that I know the unseen [aspects] of the heavens and the earth? And I know what you reveal and what you have concealed."

— Saheeh International

وَإِذْ

And when

wa-idh

قُلْنَا

We said

qul'nā

لِلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةِ

to the angels

lil'malāikati

ٱسْجُدُوا۟

Prostrate

us'judū

لِـَٔادَمَ

to Adam

liādama

فَسَجَدُوٓا۟

[so] they prostrated

fasajadū

إِلَّآ

except

illā

إِبْلِيسَ

Iblis

ib'līsa

أَبَىٰ

He refused

abā

وَٱسْتَكْبَرَ

and was arrogant

wa-is'takbara

وَكَانَ

and became

wakāna

مِنَ

of

mina

ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ

the disbelievers

l-kāfirīna

٣٤

And [mention] when We said to the angels, "Prostrate before Adam"; so they prostrated, except for Iblees.1 He refused and was arrogant and became of the disbelievers.

— Saheeh International

وَقُلْنَا

And We said

waqul'nā

يَـٰٓـَٔادَمُ

O Adam

yāādamu

ٱسْكُنْ

Dwell

us'kun

أَنتَ

you

anta

وَزَوْجُكَ

and your spouse

wazawjuka

ٱلْجَنَّةَ

(in) Paradise

l-janata

وَكُلَا

and [you both] eat

wakulā

مِنْهَا

from it

min'hā

رَغَدًا

freely

raghadan

حَيْثُ

(from) wherever

ḥaythu

شِئْتُمَا

you [both] wish

shi'tumā

وَلَا

But do not

walā

تَقْرَبَا

[you two] approach

taqrabā

هَـٰذِهِ

this

hādhihi

ٱلشَّجَرَةَ

[the] tree

l-shajarata

فَتَكُونَا

lest you [both] be

fatakūnā

مِنَ

of

mina

ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ

the wrongdoers

l-ẓālimīna

٣٥

And We said, "O Adam, dwell, you and your wife, in Paradise and eat therefrom in [ease and] abundance from wherever you will. But do not approach this tree, lest you be among the wrongdoers."

— Saheeh International

فَأَزَلَّهُمَا

Then made [both of] them slip

fa-azallahumā

ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنُ

the Shaitaan

l-shayṭānu

عَنْهَا

from it

ʿanhā

فَأَخْرَجَهُمَا

and he got [both of] them out

fa-akhrajahumā

مِمَّا

from what

mimmā

كَانَا

they [both] were

kānā

فِيهِ ۖ

in [it]

fīhi

وَقُلْنَا

And We said

waqul'nā

ٱهْبِطُوا۟

Go down (all of you)

ih'biṭū

بَعْضُكُمْ

some of you

baʿḍukum

لِبَعْضٍ

to others

libaʿḍin

عَدُوٌّۭ ۖ

(as) enemy

ʿaduwwun

وَلَكُمْ

and for you

walakum

فِى

in

ٱلْأَرْضِ

the earth

l-arḍi

مُسْتَقَرٌّۭ

(is) a dwelling place

mus'taqarrun

وَمَتَـٰعٌ

and a provision

wamatāʿun

إِلَىٰ

for

ilā

حِينٍۢ

a period

ḥīnin

٣٦

But Satan caused them to slip out of it and removed them from that [condition] in which they had been. And We said, "Go down, [all of you], as enemies to one another, and you will have upon the earth a place of settlement and provision for a time."

— Saheeh International

فَتَلَقَّىٰٓ

Then received

fatalaqqā

ءَادَمُ

Adam

ādamu

مِن

from

min

رَّبِّهِۦ

his Lord

rabbihi

كَلِمَـٰتٍۢ

words

kalimātin

فَتَابَ

So (his Lord) turned

fatāba

عَلَيْهِ ۚ

towards him

ʿalayhi

إِنَّهُۥ

Indeed He

innahu

هُوَ

He

huwa

ٱلتَّوَّابُ

(is) the Oft-returning (to mercy)

l-tawābu

ٱلرَّحِيمُ

the Most Merciful

l-raḥīmu

٣٧

Then Adam received from his Lord [some] words,1 and He accepted his repentance. Indeed, it is He who is the Accepting of Repentance,2 the Merciful.

— Saheeh International
