Al-Mujādila

The Pleading Woman

المجادلة

قَدْ

Indeed

qad

سَمِعَ

Allah has heard

samiʿa

ٱللَّهُ

Allah has heard

l-lahu

قَوْلَ

(the) speech

qawla

ٱلَّتِى

(of one) who

allatī

تُجَـٰدِلُكَ

disputes with you

tujādiluka

فِى

concerning

زَوْجِهَا

her husband

zawjihā

وَتَشْتَكِىٓ

and she directs her complaint

watashtakī

إِلَى

to

ilā

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

وَٱللَّهُ

And Allah

wal-lahu

يَسْمَعُ

hears

yasmaʿu

تَحَاوُرَكُمَآ ۚ

(the) dialogue of both of you

taḥāwurakumā

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

سَمِيعٌۢ

(is) All-Hearer

samīʿun

بَصِيرٌ

All-Seer

baṣīrun

١

Certainly has Allāh heard the speech of the one who argues [i.e., pleads] with you, [O Muḥammad], concerning her husband and directs her complaint to Allāh. And Allāh hears your dialogue; indeed, Allāh is Hearing and Seeing.

— Saheeh International

ٱلَّذِينَ

Those who

alladhīna

يُظَـٰهِرُونَ

pronounce zihar

yuẓāhirūna

مِنكُم

among you

minkum

مِّن

[from]

min

نِّسَآئِهِم

(to) their wives

nisāihim

مَّا

not

هُنَّ

they

hunna

أُمَّهَـٰتِهِمْ ۖ

(are) their mothers

ummahātihim

إِنْ

Not

in

أُمَّهَـٰتُهُمْ

(are) their mothers

ummahātuhum

إِلَّا

except

illā

ٱلَّـٰٓـِٔى

those who

allāī

وَلَدْنَهُمْ ۚ

gave them birth

waladnahum

وَإِنَّهُمْ

And indeed, they

wa-innahum

لَيَقُولُونَ

surely say

layaqūlūna

مُنكَرًۭا

an evil

munkaran

مِّنَ

[of]

mina

ٱلْقَوْلِ

[the] word

l-qawli

وَزُورًۭا ۚ

and a lie

wazūran

وَإِنَّ

But indeed

wa-inna

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

لَعَفُوٌّ

(is) surely, Oft-Pardoning

laʿafuwwun

غَفُورٌۭ

Oft-Forgiving

ghafūrun

٢

Those who pronounce ẓihār1 among you [to separate] from their wives - they are not [consequently] their mothers. Their mothers are none but those who gave birth to them. And indeed, they are saying an objectionable statement and a falsehood. But indeed, Allāh is Pardoning and Forgiving.

— Saheeh International

وَٱلَّذِينَ

And those who

wa-alladhīna

يُظَـٰهِرُونَ

pronounce zihar

yuẓāhirūna

مِن

[from]

min

نِّسَآئِهِمْ

(to) their wives

nisāihim

ثُمَّ

then

thumma

يَعُودُونَ

go back

yaʿūdūna

لِمَا

on what

limā

قَالُوا۟

they said

qālū

فَتَحْرِيرُ

then freeing

fataḥrīru

رَقَبَةٍۢ

(of) a slave

raqabatin

مِّن

before

min

قَبْلِ

before

qabli

أَن

[that]

an

يَتَمَآسَّا ۚ

they touch each other

yatamāssā

ذَٰلِكُمْ

That

dhālikum

تُوعَظُونَ

you are admonished

tūʿaẓūna

بِهِۦ ۚ

to it

bihi

وَٱللَّهُ

And Allah

wal-lahu

بِمَا

of what

bimā

تَعْمَلُونَ

you do

taʿmalūna

خَبِيرٌۭ

(is) All-Aware

khabīrun

٣

And those who pronounce ẓihār from their wives and then [wish to] go back on what they said - then [there must be] the freeing of a slave before they touch one another. That is what you are admonished thereby; and Allāh is Aware of what you do.

— Saheeh International

فَمَن

Then whoever

faman

لَّمْ

(does) not

lam

يَجِدْ

find

yajid

فَصِيَامُ

then fasting

faṣiyāmu

شَهْرَيْنِ

(for) two months

shahrayni

مُتَتَابِعَيْنِ

consecutively

mutatābiʿayni

مِن

before

min

قَبْلِ

before

qabli

أَن

[that]

an

يَتَمَآسَّا ۖ

they both touch each other

yatamāssā

فَمَن

But (he) who

faman

لَّمْ

not

lam

يَسْتَطِعْ

is able

yastaṭiʿ

فَإِطْعَامُ

then (the) feeding

fa-iṭ'ʿāmu

سِتِّينَ

(of) sixty

sittīna

مِسْكِينًۭا ۚ

needy one(s)

mis'kīnan

ذَٰلِكَ

That

dhālika

لِتُؤْمِنُوا۟

so that you may believe

litu'minū

بِٱللَّهِ

in Allah

bil-lahi

وَرَسُولِهِۦ ۚ

and His Messenger

warasūlihi

وَتِلْكَ

and these

watil'ka

حُدُودُ

(are the) limits

ḥudūdu

ٱللَّهِ ۗ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

وَلِلْكَـٰفِرِينَ

and for the disbelievers

walil'kāfirīna

عَذَابٌ

(is) a punishment

ʿadhābun

أَلِيمٌ

painful

alīmun

٤

And he who does not find [a slave] - then a fast for two months consecutively1 before they touch one another; and he who is unable - then the feeding of sixty poor persons. That is for you to believe [completely] in Allāh and His Messenger; and those are the limits [set by] Allāh. And for the disbelievers is a painful punishment.

— Saheeh International

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

يُحَآدُّونَ

oppose

yuḥāddūna

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

وَرَسُولَهُۥ

and His Messenger

warasūlahu

كُبِتُوا۟

(will) be disgraced

kubitū

كَمَا

as

kamā

كُبِتَ

were disgraced

kubita

ٱلَّذِينَ

those

alladhīna

مِن

before them

min

قَبْلِهِمْ ۚ

before them

qablihim

وَقَدْ

And certainly

waqad

أَنزَلْنَآ

We have sent down

anzalnā

ءَايَـٰتٍۭ

Verses

āyātin

بَيِّنَـٰتٍۢ ۚ

clear

bayyinātin

وَلِلْكَـٰفِرِينَ

And for the disbelievers

walil'kāfirīna

عَذَابٌۭ

(is) a punishment

ʿadhābun

مُّهِينٌۭ

humiliating

muhīnun

٥

Indeed, those who oppose Allāh and His Messenger are abased as those before them were abased. And We have certainly sent down verses of clear evidence. And for the disbelievers is a humiliating punishment

— Saheeh International

يَوْمَ

(On the) Day

yawma

يَبْعَثُهُمُ

(when) Allah will raise them

yabʿathuhumu

ٱللَّهُ

(when) Allah will raise them

l-lahu

جَمِيعًۭا

all

jamīʿan

فَيُنَبِّئُهُم

and inform them

fayunabbi-uhum

بِمَا

of what

bimā

عَمِلُوٓا۟ ۚ

they did

ʿamilū

أَحْصَىٰهُ

Allah has recorded it

aḥṣāhu

ٱللَّهُ

Allah has recorded it

l-lahu

وَنَسُوهُ ۚ

while they forgot it

wanasūhu

وَٱللَّهُ

And Allah

wal-lahu

عَلَىٰ

(is) over

ʿalā

كُلِّ

all

kulli

شَىْءٍۢ

things

shayin

شَهِيدٌ

a Witness

shahīdun

٦

On the Day when Allāh will resurrect them all and inform them of what they did. Allāh had enumerated it, while they forgot it; and Allāh is, over all things, Witness.1

— Saheeh International
