وَٱلَّذِينَ And those who wa-alladhīna give yu'tūna what mā they give ātaw while their hearts waqulūbuhum (are) fearful wajilatun because they annahum to ilā their Lord rabbihim (will) return rājiʿūna
And they who give what they give while their hearts are fearful1 because they will be returning to their Lord -
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ (It is) those ulāika who hasten yusāriʿūna in fī the good (deeds) l-khayrāti and they wahum in them lahā (are) foremost sābiqūna
It is those who hasten to good deeds, and they outstrip [others] therein.
وَلَا And not walā We burden nukallifu any soul nafsan except illā (to) its capacity wus'ʿahā and with Us waladaynā (is) a Record kitābun (which) speaks yanṭiqu with the truth bil-ḥaqi and they wahum (will) not lā be wronged yuẓ'lamūna
And We charge no soul except [with that within] its capacity, and with Us is a record which speaks with truth; and they will not be wronged.
بَلْ Nay bal their hearts qulūbuhum (are) in fī confusion ghamratin over min this hādhā and for them walahum (are) deeds aʿmālun besides min besides dūni that dhālika they hum for it lahā (are) doers ʿāmilūna
But their hearts are covered with confusion over this, and they have [evil] deeds besides that [i.e., disbelief] which they are doing,
حَتَّىٰٓ Until ḥattā when idhā We seize akhadhnā their affluent ones mut'rafīhim with the punishment bil-ʿadhābi behold idhā They hum cry for help yajarūna
Until when We seize their affluent ones with punishment,1 at once they are crying [to Allāh] for help.
لَا (Do) not lā cry for help tajarū today l-yawma Indeed, you innakum from Us minnā not lā will be helped tunṣarūna
Do not cry out today. Indeed, by Us you will not be helped.
قَدْ Verily qad were kānat My Verses āyātī recited tut'lā to you ʿalaykum but you used fakuntum (to) on ʿalā your heels aʿqābikum turn back tankiṣūna
My verses had already been recited to you, but you were turning back on your heels.
مُسْتَكْبِرِينَ (Being) arrogant mus'takbirīna about it bihi conversing by night sāmiran speaking evil tahjurūna
In arrogance regarding it,1 conversing by night, speaking evil.
أَفَلَمْ Then, do not afalam they ponder yaddabbarū the Word l-qawla or am has come to them jāahum what mā not lam (had) come yati (to) their forefathers ābāahumu (to) their forefathers l-awalīna
Then have they not reflected over the word [i.e., the Qur’ān], or has there come to them that which had not come to their forefathers?
أَمْ Or am (do) not lam they recognize yaʿrifū their Messenger rasūlahum so they fahum (are) rejecting him lahu (are) rejecting him munkirūna
Or did they not know their Messenger, so they are toward him disacknowledging?
أَمْ Or am they say yaqūlūna In him bihi (is) madness jinnatun Nay bal he brought them jāahum the truth bil-ḥaqi but most of them wa-aktharuhum to the truth lil'ḥaqqi (are) averse kārihūna
Or do they say, "In him is madness"? Rather, he brought them the truth, but most of them, to the truth, are averse.
وَلَوِ But if walawi (had) followed ittabaʿa the truth l-ḥaqu their desires ahwāahum surely (would) have been corrupted lafasadati the heavens l-samāwātu and the earth wal-arḍu and whoever waman (is) therein fīhinna Nay bal We have brought them ataynāhum their reminder bidhik'rihim but they fahum from ʿan their reminder dhik'rihim (are) turning away muʿ'riḍūna
But if the Truth [i.e., Allāh] had followed their inclinations, the heavens and the earth and whoever is in them would have been ruined. Rather, We have brought them their message,1 but they, from their message, are turning away.
أَمْ Or am you ask them tasaluhum (for) a payment kharjan But the payment fakharāju (of) your Lord rabbika (is) best khayrun and He wahuwa (is) the Best khayru (of) the Providers l-rāziqīna
Or do you, [O Muḥammad], ask them for payment? But the reward of your Lord is best, and He is the best of providers.
وَإِنَّكَ And indeed, you wa-innaka certainly call them latadʿūhum to ilā (the) Path ṣirāṭin Straight mus'taqīmin
And indeed, you invite them to a straight path.
وَإِنَّ And indeed wa-inna those who alladhīna (do) not lā believe yu'minūna in the Hereafter bil-ākhirati from ʿani the path l-ṣirāṭi surely (are) deviating lanākibūna
But indeed, those who do not believe in the Hereafter are deviating from the path.
