١

Alif, Lām, Rā.1 These are the verses of the Book and a clear Qur’ān [i.e., recitation].

— Saheeh International

رُّبَمَا

Perhaps

rubamā

يَوَدُّ

will wish

yawaddu

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

كَفَرُوا۟

disbelieved

kafarū

لَوْ

if

law

كَانُوا۟

they had been

kānū

مُسْلِمِينَ

Muslims

mus'limīna

٢

Perhaps those who disbelieve will wish1 that they had been Muslims.

— Saheeh International

ذَرْهُمْ

Leave them

dharhum

يَأْكُلُوا۟

(to) eat

yakulū

وَيَتَمَتَّعُوا۟

and enjoy

wayatamattaʿū

وَيُلْهِهِمُ

and diverted them

wayul'hihimu

ٱلْأَمَلُ ۖ

the hope

l-amalu

فَسَوْفَ

then soon

fasawfa

يَعْلَمُونَ

they will come to know

yaʿlamūna

٣

Let them eat and enjoy themselves and be diverted by [false] hope, for they are going to know.

— Saheeh International

وَمَآ

And not

wamā

أَهْلَكْنَا

We destroyed

ahlaknā

مِن

any

but

illā

وَلَهَا

(there was) for it

walahā

كِتَابٌۭ

a decree

kitābun

مَّعْلُومٌۭ

known

maʿlūmun

٤

And We did not destroy any city but that for it was a known decree.

— Saheeh International

مَّا

Not

تَسْبِقُ

أَجَلَهَا

ajalahā

وَمَا

and not

wamā

يَسْتَـْٔخِرُونَ

(can) delay it

yastakhirūna

٥

No nation will precede its term, nor will they remain thereafter.

— Saheeh International

وَقَالُوا۟

And they say

waqālū

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا

O you

yāayyuhā

ٱلَّذِى

(to) whom

alladhī

نُزِّلَ

has been sent down

nuzzila

عَلَيْهِ

[on him]

ʿalayhi

ٱلذِّكْرُ

the Reminder

l-dhik'ru

إِنَّكَ

indeed, you

innaka

لَمَجْنُونٌۭ

(are) surely mad

lamajnūnun

٦

And they say, "O you upon whom the message has been sent down, indeed you are mad.1

— Saheeh International

لَّوْ

Why

law

مَا

not

تَأْتِينَا

you bring to us

tatīnā

٧

Why do you not bring us the angels, if you should be among the truthful?"

— Saheeh International

مَا

Not

نُنَزِّلُ

We send down

nunazzilu

ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةَ

the Angels

l-malāikata

إِلَّا

except

illā

بِٱلْحَقِّ

with the truth

bil-ḥaqi

وَمَا

and not

wamā

كَانُوٓا۟

they would be

kānū

إِذًۭا

then

idhan

مُّنظَرِينَ

given respite

munẓarīna

٨

We do not send down the angels except with truth;1 and they [i.e., the disbelievers] would not then be reprieved.

— Saheeh International

إِنَّا

Indeed, We

innā

نَحْنُ

We

naḥnu

نَزَّلْنَا

have sent down

nazzalnā

ٱلذِّكْرَ

the Reminder

l-dhik'ra

وَإِنَّا

and indeed, We

wa-innā

لَهُۥ

of it

lahu

لَحَـٰفِظُونَ

(are) surely Guardians

laḥāfiẓūna

٩

Indeed, it is We who sent down the message [i.e., the Qur’ān], and indeed, We will be its guardian.

— Saheeh International

وَلَقَدْ

And certainly

walaqad

أَرْسَلْنَا

We (had) sent

arsalnā

مِن

before you

min

قَبْلِكَ

before you

qablika

فِى

in

شِيَعِ

the sects

shiyaʿi

ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ

(of) the former (people)

l-awalīna

١٠

And We had certainly sent [messengers] before you, [O Muḥammad], among the sects of the former peoples.

— Saheeh International

وَمَا

And not

wamā

يَأْتِيهِم

came to them

yatīhim

مِّن

Messenger

but

illā

كَانُوا۟

they did

kānū

بِهِۦ

bihi

يَسْتَهْزِءُونَ

mock

yastahziūna

١١

And no messenger would come to them except that they ridiculed him.

— Saheeh International

كَذَٰلِكَ

Thus

kadhālika

نَسْلُكُهُۥ

We let it enter

naslukuhu

فِى

in

قُلُوبِ

(the) hearts

qulūbi

ٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ

(of) the criminals

l-muj'rimīna

١٢

Thus do We insert it [i.e., denial] into the hearts of the criminals.

— Saheeh International

لَا

Not

١٣

They will not believe in it, while there has already occurred the precedent of the former peoples.

— Saheeh International

وَلَوْ

And (even) if

walaw

فَتَحْنَا

We opened

fataḥnā

عَلَيْهِم

to them

ʿalayhim

بَابًۭا

فَظَلُّوا۟

and they were to continue

faẓallū

فِيهِ

therein

fīhi

يَعْرُجُونَ

(to) ascend

yaʿrujūna

١٤

And [even] if We opened to them a gate from the heaven and they continued therein to ascend,

— Saheeh International

لَقَالُوٓا۟

They would surely say

laqālū

إِنَّمَا

Only

They would say, "Our eyes have only been dazzled. Rather, we are a people affected by magic."

— Saheeh International
