الٓر ۚ Alif Laam Ra alif-lam-ra These til'ka (are) the Verses āyātu (of) the Book l-kitābi and Quran waqur'ānin clear mubīnin
Alif, Lām, Rā.1 These are the verses of the Book and a clear Qur’ān [i.e., recitation].
رُّبَمَا Perhaps rubamā will wish yawaddu those who alladhīna disbelieved kafarū if law they had been kānū Muslims mus'limīna
Perhaps those who disbelieve will wish1 that they had been Muslims.
ذَرْهُمْ Leave them dharhum (to) eat yakulū and enjoy wayatamattaʿū and diverted them wayul'hihimu the hope l-amalu then soon fasawfa they will come to know yaʿlamūna
Let them eat and enjoy themselves and be diverted by [false] hope, for they are going to know.
وَمَآ And not wamā We destroyed ahlaknā any min town qaryatin but illā (there was) for it walahā a decree kitābun known maʿlūmun
And We did not destroy any city but that for it was a known decree.
مَّا Not mā (can) advance tasbiqu any min nation ummatin its term ajalahā and not wamā (can) delay it yastakhirūna
No nation will precede its term, nor will they remain thereafter.
وَقَالُوا۟ And they say waqālū O you yāayyuhā (to) whom alladhī has been sent down nuzzila [on him] ʿalayhi the Reminder l-dhik'ru indeed, you innaka (are) surely mad lamajnūnun
And they say, "O you upon whom the message has been sent down, indeed you are mad.1
لَّوْ Why law not mā you bring to us tatīnā the Angels bil-malāikati if in you are kunta of mina the truthful l-ṣādiqīna
Why do you not bring us the angels, if you should be among the truthful?"
مَا Not mā We send down nunazzilu the Angels l-malāikata except illā with the truth bil-ḥaqi and not wamā they would be kānū then idhan given respite munẓarīna
We do not send down the angels except with truth;1 and they [i.e., the disbelievers] would not then be reprieved.
إِنَّا Indeed, We innā We naḥnu have sent down nazzalnā the Reminder l-dhik'ra and indeed, We wa-innā of it lahu (are) surely Guardians laḥāfiẓūna
Indeed, it is We who sent down the message [i.e., the Qur’ān], and indeed, We will be its guardian.
وَلَقَدْ And certainly walaqad We (had) sent arsalnā before you min before you qablika in fī the sects shiyaʿi (of) the former (people) l-awalīna
And We had certainly sent [messengers] before you, [O Muḥammad], among the sects of the former peoples.
وَمَا And not wamā came to them yatīhim any min Messenger rasūlin but illā they did kānū at him bihi mock yastahziūna
And no messenger would come to them except that they ridiculed him.
كَذَٰلِكَ Thus kadhālika We let it enter naslukuhu in fī (the) hearts qulūbi (of) the criminals l-muj'rimīna
Thus do We insert it [i.e., denial] into the hearts of the criminals.
لَا Not lā they believe yu'minūna in it bihi and verily waqad have passed khalat the way(s) sunnatu (of) the former (people) l-awalīna
They will not believe in it, while there has already occurred the precedent of the former peoples.
وَلَوْ And (even) if walaw We opened fataḥnā to them ʿalayhim a gate bāban from mina the heaven l-samāi and they were to continue faẓallū therein fīhi (to) ascend yaʿrujūna
And [even] if We opened to them a gate from the heaven and they continued therein to ascend,
لَقَالُوٓا۟ They would surely say laqālū Only innamā have been dazzled sukkirat our eyes abṣārunā Nay bal we naḥnu (are) a people qawmun bewitched masḥūrūna
They would say, "Our eyes have only been dazzled. Rather, we are a people affected by magic."
