قَالَ

He said

qāla

يَـٰبُنَىَّ

O my son

yābunayya

لَا

(Do) not

تَقْصُصْ

relate

taqṣuṣ

رُءْيَاكَ

your vision

ru'yāka

عَلَىٰٓ

to

ʿalā

إِخْوَتِكَ

your brothers

ikh'watika

فَيَكِيدُوا۟

lest they plan

fayakīdū

لَكَ

against you

laka

كَيْدًا ۖ

a plot

kaydan

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنَ

the Shaitaan

l-shayṭāna

لِلْإِنسَـٰنِ

(is) to man

lil'insāni

عَدُوٌّۭ

an enemy

ʿaduwwun

مُّبِينٌۭ

open

mubīnun

٥

He said, "O my son, do not relate your vision to your brothers or they will contrive against you a plan. Indeed Satan, to man, is a manifest enemy.

— Saheeh International

وَكَذَٰلِكَ

And thus

wakadhālika

يَجْتَبِيكَ

will choose you

yajtabīka

رَبُّكَ

your Lord

rabbuka

وَيُعَلِّمُكَ

and will teach you

wayuʿallimuka

مِن

of

min

تَأْوِيلِ

(the) interpretation

tawīli

ٱلْأَحَادِيثِ

(of) the narratives

l-aḥādīthi

وَيُتِمُّ

and complete

wayutimmu

نِعْمَتَهُۥ

His Favor

niʿ'matahu

عَلَيْكَ

on you

ʿalayka

وَعَلَىٰٓ

and on

waʿalā

ءَالِ

(the) family

āli

يَعْقُوبَ

(of) Yaqub

yaʿqūba

كَمَآ

as

kamā

أَتَمَّهَا

He completed it

atammahā

عَلَىٰٓ

on

ʿalā

أَبَوَيْكَ

your two forefathers

abawayka

مِن

before

min

قَبْلُ

before

qablu

إِبْرَٰهِيمَ

Ibrahim

ib'rāhīma

وَإِسْحَـٰقَ ۚ

and Isaac

wa-is'ḥāqa

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

رَبَّكَ

your Lord

rabbaka

عَلِيمٌ

(is) All-Knower

ʿalīmun

حَكِيمٌۭ

All-Wise

ḥakīmun

٦

And thus will your Lord choose you and teach you the interpretation of narratives [i.e., events or dreams] and complete His favor upon you and upon the family of Jacob, as He completed it upon your fathers before, Abraham and Isaac. Indeed, your Lord is Knowing and Wise."

— Saheeh International

۞ لَّقَدْ

Certainly

laqad

كَانَ

were

kāna

فِى

in

يُوسُفَ

Yusuf

yūsufa

وَإِخْوَتِهِۦٓ

and his brothers

wa-ikh'watihi

ءَايَـٰتٌۭ

signs

āyātun

لِّلسَّآئِلِينَ

for those who ask

lilssāilīna

٧

Certainly were there in Joseph and his brothers signs for those who ask, [such as]

— Saheeh International

إِذْ

When

idh

قَالُوا۟

they said

qālū

لَيُوسُفُ

Surely Yusuf

layūsufu

وَأَخُوهُ

and his brother

wa-akhūhu

أَحَبُّ

(are) more beloved

aḥabbu

إِلَىٰٓ

to

ilā

أَبِينَا

our father

abīnā

مِنَّا

than we

minnā

وَنَحْنُ

while we

wanaḥnu

عُصْبَةٌ

(are) a group

ʿuṣ'batun

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

أَبَانَا

our father

abānā

لَفِى

(is) surely in

lafī

ضَلَـٰلٍۢ

an error

ḍalālin

مُّبِينٍ

clear

mubīnin

٨

When they said, "Joseph and his brother1 are more beloved to our father than we, while we are a clan. Indeed, our father is in clear error.

— Saheeh International

ٱقْتُلُوا۟

Kill

uq'tulū

يُوسُفَ

Yusuf

yūsufa

أَوِ

or

awi

ٱطْرَحُوهُ

cast him

iṭ'raḥūhu

أَرْضًۭا

(to) a land

arḍan

يَخْلُ

so will be free

yakhlu

لَكُمْ

for you

lakum

وَجْهُ

(the) face

wajhu

أَبِيكُمْ

(of) your father

abīkum

وَتَكُونُوا۟

and you will be

watakūnū

مِنۢ

after that

min

بَعْدِهِۦ

after that

baʿdihi

قَوْمًۭا

a people

qawman

صَـٰلِحِينَ

righteous

ṣāliḥīna

٩

Kill Joseph or cast him out to [another] land; the countenance [i.e., attention] of your father will [then] be only for you, and you will be after that a righteous people."1

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

Said

قَآئِلٌۭ

a speaker

qāilun

مِّنْهُمْ

among them

min'hum

لَا

(Do) not

تَقْتُلُوا۟

kill

taqtulū

يُوسُفَ

Yusuf

yūsufa

وَأَلْقُوهُ

but throw him

wa-alqūhu

فِى

in

غَيَـٰبَتِ

the bottom

ghayābati

ٱلْجُبِّ

(of) the well

l-jubi

يَلْتَقِطْهُ

will pick him

yaltaqiṭ'hu

بَعْضُ

some

baʿḍu

ٱلسَّيَّارَةِ

[the] caravan

l-sayārati

إِن

if

in

كُنتُمْ

you are

kuntum

فَـٰعِلِينَ

doing

fāʿilīna

١٠

Said a speaker among them, "Do not kill Joseph but throw him into the bottom of the well; some travelers will pick him up - if you would do [something]."

— Saheeh International

قَالُوا۟

They said

qālū

يَـٰٓأَبَانَا

O our father

yāabānā

مَا

Why

لَكَ

(do) you

laka

لَا

not

تَأْمَ۫نَّا

trust us

tamannā

عَلَىٰ

with

ʿalā

يُوسُفَ

Yusuf

yūsufa

وَإِنَّا

while indeed, we

wa-innā

لَهُۥ

(are) for him

lahu

لَنَـٰصِحُونَ

surely well-wishers

lanāṣiḥūna

١١

They said, "O our father, why do you not entrust us with Joseph while indeed, we are to him sincere counselors?

— Saheeh International

أَرْسِلْهُ

Send him

arsil'hu

مَعَنَا

with us

maʿanā

غَدًۭا

tomorrow

ghadan

يَرْتَعْ

(to) enjoy

yartaʿ

وَيَلْعَبْ

and play

wayalʿab

وَإِنَّا

And indeed, we

wa-innā

لَهُۥ

for him

lahu

لَحَـٰفِظُونَ

(will) surely (be) guardians

laḥāfiẓūna

١٢

Send him with us tomorrow that he may eat well and play. And indeed, we will be his guardians."

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

إِنِّى

Indeed, [I]

innī

لَيَحْزُنُنِىٓ

it surely saddens me

layaḥzununī

أَن

that

an

تَذْهَبُوا۟

you should take him

tadhhabū

بِهِۦ

you should take him

bihi

وَأَخَافُ

and I fear

wa-akhāfu

أَن

that

an

يَأْكُلَهُ

would eat him

yakulahu

ٱلذِّئْبُ

a wolf

l-dhi'bu

وَأَنتُمْ

while you

wa-antum

عَنْهُ

of him

ʿanhu

غَـٰفِلُونَ

(are) unaware

ghāfilūna

١٣

[Jacob] said, "Indeed, it saddens me that you should take him, and I fear that a wolf would eat him while you are of him unaware."

— Saheeh International

قَالُوا۟

They said

qālū

لَئِنْ

If

la-in

أَكَلَهُ

eats him

akalahu

ٱلذِّئْبُ

the wolf

l-dhi'bu

وَنَحْنُ

while we

wanaḥnu

عُصْبَةٌ

(are) a group

ʿuṣ'batun

إِنَّآ

indeed, we

innā

إِذًۭا

then

idhan

لَّخَـٰسِرُونَ

surely (would be) losers

lakhāsirūna

١٤

They said, "If a wolf should eat him while we are a [strong] clan, indeed, we would then be losers."

— Saheeh International
