قَالَ He said qāla O my son yābunayya (Do) not lā relate taqṣuṣ your vision ru'yāka to ʿalā your brothers ikh'watika lest they plan fayakīdū against you laka a plot kaydan Indeed inna the Shaitaan l-shayṭāna (is) to man lil'insāni an enemy ʿaduwwun open mubīnun
He said, "O my son, do not relate your vision to your brothers or they will contrive against you a plan. Indeed Satan, to man, is a manifest enemy.
وَكَذَٰلِكَ And thus wakadhālika will choose you yajtabīka your Lord rabbuka and will teach you wayuʿallimuka of min (the) interpretation tawīli (of) the narratives l-aḥādīthi and complete wayutimmu His Favor niʿ'matahu on you ʿalayka and on waʿalā (the) family āli (of) Yaqub yaʿqūba as kamā He completed it atammahā on ʿalā your two forefathers abawayka before min before qablu Ibrahim ib'rāhīma and Isaac wa-is'ḥāqa Indeed inna your Lord rabbaka (is) All-Knower ʿalīmun All-Wise ḥakīmun
And thus will your Lord choose you and teach you the interpretation of narratives [i.e., events or dreams] and complete His favor upon you and upon the family of Jacob, as He completed it upon your fathers before, Abraham and Isaac. Indeed, your Lord is Knowing and Wise."
۞ لَّقَدْ Certainly laqad were kāna in fī Yusuf yūsufa and his brothers wa-ikh'watihi signs āyātun for those who ask lilssāilīna
Certainly were there in Joseph and his brothers signs for those who ask, [such as]
إِذْ When idh they said qālū Surely Yusuf layūsufu and his brother wa-akhūhu (are) more beloved aḥabbu to ilā our father abīnā than we minnā while we wanaḥnu (are) a group ʿuṣ'batun Indeed inna our father abānā (is) surely in lafī an error ḍalālin clear mubīnin
When they said, "Joseph and his brother1 are more beloved to our father than we, while we are a clan. Indeed, our father is in clear error.
ٱقْتُلُوا۟ Kill uq'tulū Yusuf yūsufa or awi cast him iṭ'raḥūhu (to) a land arḍan so will be free yakhlu for you lakum (the) face wajhu (of) your father abīkum and you will be watakūnū after that min after that baʿdihi a people qawman righteous ṣāliḥīna
Kill Joseph or cast him out to [another] land; the countenance [i.e., attention] of your father will [then] be only for you, and you will be after that a righteous people."1
قَالَ Said qāla a speaker qāilun among them min'hum (Do) not lā kill taqtulū Yusuf yūsufa but throw him wa-alqūhu in fī the bottom ghayābati (of) the well l-jubi will pick him yaltaqiṭ'hu some baʿḍu [the] caravan l-sayārati if in you are kuntum doing fāʿilīna
Said a speaker among them, "Do not kill Joseph but throw him into the bottom of the well; some travelers will pick him up - if you would do [something]."
قَالُوا۟ They said qālū O our father yāabānā Why mā (do) you laka not lā trust us tamannā with ʿalā Yusuf yūsufa while indeed, we wa-innā (are) for him lahu surely well-wishers lanāṣiḥūna
They said, "O our father, why do you not entrust us with Joseph while indeed, we are to him sincere counselors?
أَرْسِلْهُ Send him arsil'hu with us maʿanā tomorrow ghadan (to) enjoy yartaʿ and play wayalʿab And indeed, we wa-innā for him lahu (will) surely (be) guardians laḥāfiẓūna
Send him with us tomorrow that he may eat well and play. And indeed, we will be his guardians."
قَالَ He said qāla Indeed, [I] innī it surely saddens me layaḥzununī that an you should take him tadhhabū you should take him bihi and I fear wa-akhāfu that an would eat him yakulahu a wolf l-dhi'bu while you wa-antum of him ʿanhu (are) unaware ghāfilūna
[Jacob] said, "Indeed, it saddens me that you should take him, and I fear that a wolf would eat him while you are of him unaware."
قَالُوا۟ They said qālū If la-in eats him akalahu the wolf l-dhi'bu while we wanaḥnu (are) a group ʿuṣ'batun indeed, we innā then idhan surely (would be) losers lakhāsirūna
They said, "If a wolf should eat him while we are a [strong] clan, indeed, we would then be losers."
