The Morning Hours
﷽
الضحى
وَٱلَّيْلِ And the night wa-al-layli when idhā it covers with darkness sajā
And [by] the night when it covers with darkness,1
مَا Not mā has forsaken you waddaʿaka your Lord rabbuka and not wamā He is displeased qalā
Your Lord has not taken leave of you, [O Muḥammad], nor has He detested [you].
وَلَلْـَٔاخِرَةُ And surely the Hereafter walalākhiratu (is) better khayrun for you laka than mina the first l-ūlā
And the Hereafter is better for you than the first [life].
وَلَسَوْفَ And soon walasawfa will give you yuʿ'ṭīka your Lord rabbuka then you will be satisfied fatarḍā
And your Lord is going to give you, and you will be satisfied.
أَلَمْ Did not alam He find you yajid'ka an orphan yatīman and give shelter faāwā
Did He not find you an orphan and give [you] refuge?
وَوَجَدَكَ And He found you wawajadaka lost ḍāllan so He guided fahadā
And He found you lost and guided [you],
وَوَجَدَكَ And He found you wawajadaka in need ʿāilan so He made self-sufficient fa-aghnā
And He found you poor and made [you] self-sufficient.
فَأَمَّا So as for fa-ammā the orphan l-yatīma then (do) not falā oppress taqhar
So as for the orphan, do not oppress [him].
وَأَمَّا And as for wa-ammā one who asks l-sāila then (do) not falā repel tanhar
And as for the petitioner,1 do not repel [him].
وَأَمَّا But as for wa-ammā (the) Favor biniʿ'mati (of) your Lord rabbika narrate faḥaddith
But as for the favor of your Lord, report [it].
