At-Tawbah

The Repentance

التوبة

بَرَآءَةٌۭ

Freedom from obligations

barāatun

مِّنَ

from

mina

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

وَرَسُولِهِۦٓ

and His Messenger

warasūlihi

إِلَى

to

ilā

ٱلَّذِينَ

those (with) whom

alladhīna

عَـٰهَدتُّم

you made a covenant

ʿāhadttum

مِّنَ

from

mina

ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ

the polytheists

l-mush'rikīna

١

[This is a declaration of] disassociation, from Allāh and His Messenger, to those with whom you had made a treaty among the polytheists.1

— Saheeh International

فَسِيحُوا۟

So move about

fasīḥū

فِى

in

ٱلْأَرْضِ

the land

l-arḍi

أَرْبَعَةَ

(during) four

arbaʿata

أَشْهُرٍۢ

months

ashhurin

وَٱعْلَمُوٓا۟

but know

wa-iʿ'lamū

أَنَّكُمْ

that you

annakum

غَيْرُ

(can) not

ghayru

مُعْجِزِى

escape

muʿ'jizī

ٱللَّهِ ۙ

Allah

l-lahi

وَأَنَّ

and that

wa-anna

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

مُخْزِى

(is) the One Who (will) disgrace

mukh'zī

ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ

the disbelievers

l-kāfirīna

٢

So travel freely, [O disbelievers], throughout the land [during] four months but know that you cannot cause failure to Allāh and that Allāh will disgrace the disbelievers.

— Saheeh International

وَأَذَٰنٌۭ

And an announcement

wa-adhānun

مِّنَ

from Allah

mina

ٱللَّهِ

from Allah

l-lahi

وَرَسُولِهِۦٓ

and His Messenger

warasūlihi

إِلَى

to

ilā

ٱلنَّاسِ

the people

l-nāsi

يَوْمَ

(on the) day

yawma

ٱلْحَجِّ

(of) the greater Pilgrimage

l-ḥaji

ٱلْأَكْبَرِ

(of) the greater Pilgrimage

l-akbari

أَنَّ

that

anna

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

بَرِىٓءٌۭ

(is) free from obligations

barīon

مِّنَ

[of]

mina

ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ ۙ

(to) the polytheists

l-mush'rikīna

وَرَسُولُهُۥ ۚ

and (so is) His Messenger

warasūluhu

فَإِن

So if

fa-in

تُبْتُمْ

you repent

tub'tum

فَهُوَ

then, it is

fahuwa

خَيْرٌۭ

best

khayrun

لَّكُمْ ۖ

for you

lakum

وَإِن

But if

wa-in

تَوَلَّيْتُمْ

you turn away

tawallaytum

فَٱعْلَمُوٓا۟

then know

fa-iʿ'lamū

أَنَّكُمْ

that you

annakum

غَيْرُ

(can) not

ghayru

مُعْجِزِى

escape

muʿ'jizī

ٱللَّهِ ۗ

Allah

l-lahi

وَبَشِّرِ

And give glad tidings

wabashiri

ٱلَّذِينَ

(to) those who

alladhīna

كَفَرُوا۟

disbelieve

kafarū

بِعَذَابٍ

of a punishment

biʿadhābin

أَلِيمٍ

painful

alīmin

٣

And [it is] an announcement from Allāh and His Messenger to the people on the day of the greater pilgrimage1 that Allāh is disassociated from the disbelievers, and [so is] His Messenger. So if you repent, that is best for you; but if you turn away - then know that you will not cause failure to Allāh.2 And give tidings to those who disbelieve of a painful punishment.

— Saheeh International

إِلَّا

Except

illā

ٱلَّذِينَ

those (with) whom

alladhīna

عَـٰهَدتُّم

you have a covenant

ʿāhadttum

مِّنَ

among

mina

ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ

the polytheists

l-mush'rikīna

ثُمَّ

then

thumma

لَمْ

not

lam

يَنقُصُوكُمْ

they have failed you

yanquṣūkum

شَيْـًۭٔا

(in any) thing

shayan

وَلَمْ

and not

walam

يُظَـٰهِرُوا۟

they have supported

yuẓāhirū

عَلَيْكُمْ

against you

ʿalaykum

أَحَدًۭا

anyone

aḥadan

فَأَتِمُّوٓا۟

so fulfil

fa-atimmū

إِلَيْهِمْ

to them

ilayhim

عَهْدَهُمْ

their treaty

ʿahdahum

إِلَىٰ

till

ilā

مُدَّتِهِمْ ۚ

their term

muddatihim

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

يُحِبُّ

loves

yuḥibbu

ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ

the righteous

l-mutaqīna

٤

Excepted are those with whom you made a treaty among the polytheists and then they have not been deficient toward you in anything or supported anyone against you; so complete for them their treaty until their term [has ended]. Indeed, Allāh loves the righteous [who fear Him].

— Saheeh International

فَإِذَا

Then when

fa-idhā

ٱنسَلَخَ

have passed

insalakha

ٱلْأَشْهُرُ

the sacred months

l-ashhuru

ٱلْحُرُمُ

the sacred months

l-ḥurumu

فَٱقْتُلُوا۟

then kill

fa-uq'tulū

ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ

the polytheists

l-mush'rikīna

حَيْثُ

wherever

ḥaythu

وَجَدتُّمُوهُمْ

you find them

wajadttumūhum

وَخُذُوهُمْ

and seize them

wakhudhūhum

وَٱحْصُرُوهُمْ

and besiege them

wa-uḥ'ṣurūhum

وَٱقْعُدُوا۟

and sit (in wait)

wa-uq'ʿudū

لَهُمْ

for them

lahum

كُلَّ

(at) every

kulla

مَرْصَدٍۢ ۚ

place of ambush

marṣadin

فَإِن

But if

fa-in

تَابُوا۟

they repent

tābū

وَأَقَامُوا۟

and establish

wa-aqāmū

ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ

the prayer

l-ṣalata

وَءَاتَوُا۟

and give

waātawū

ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ

the zakah

l-zakata

فَخَلُّوا۟

then leave

fakhallū

سَبِيلَهُمْ ۚ

their way

sabīlahum

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

غَفُورٌۭ

(is) Oft-Forgiving

ghafūrun

رَّحِيمٌۭ

Most Merciful

raḥīmun

٥

And when the inviolable months1 have passed, then kill the polytheists wherever you find them and capture them and besiege them and sit in wait for them at every place of ambush. But if they should repent, establish prayer, and give zakāh, let them [go] on their way. Indeed, Allāh is Forgiving and Merciful.

— Saheeh International

وَإِنْ

And if

wa-in

أَحَدٌۭ

anyone

aḥadun

مِّنَ

of

mina

ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ

the polytheists

l-mush'rikīna

ٱسْتَجَارَكَ

seek your protection

is'tajāraka

فَأَجِرْهُ

then grant him protection

fa-ajir'hu

حَتَّىٰ

until

ḥattā

يَسْمَعَ

he hears

yasmaʿa

كَلَـٰمَ

(the) Words of Allah

kalāma

ٱللَّهِ

(the) Words of Allah

l-lahi

ثُمَّ

Then

thumma

أَبْلِغْهُ

escort him

abligh'hu

مَأْمَنَهُۥ ۚ

(to) his place of safety

mamanahu

ذَٰلِكَ

That

dhālika

بِأَنَّهُمْ

(is) because they

bi-annahum

قَوْمٌۭ

(are) a people

qawmun

لَّا

(who) do not know

يَعْلَمُونَ

(who) do not know

yaʿlamūna

٦

And if any one of the polytheists seeks your protection, then grant him protection so that he may hear the words of Allāh [i.e., the Qur’ān]. Then deliver him to his place of safety. That is because they are a people who do not know.

— Saheeh International

كَيْفَ

How

kayfa

يَكُونُ

can (there) be

yakūnu

لِلْمُشْرِكِينَ

for the polytheists

lil'mush'rikīna

عَهْدٌ

a covenant

ʿahdun

عِندَ

with

ʿinda

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

وَعِندَ

and with

waʿinda

رَسُولِهِۦٓ

His Messenger

rasūlihi

إِلَّا

except

illā

ٱلَّذِينَ

those (with) whom

alladhīna

عَـٰهَدتُّمْ

you made a covenant

ʿāhadttum

عِندَ

near

ʿinda

ٱلْمَسْجِدِ

Al-Masjid

l-masjidi

ٱلْحَرَامِ ۖ

Al-Haraam

l-ḥarāmi

فَمَا

So long as

famā

ٱسْتَقَـٰمُوا۟

they are upright

is'taqāmū

لَكُمْ

to you

lakum

فَٱسْتَقِيمُوا۟

then you be upright

fa-is'taqīmū

لَهُمْ ۚ

to them

lahum

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

يُحِبُّ

loves

yuḥibbu

ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ

the righteous

l-mutaqīna

٧

How can there be for the polytheists a treaty in the sight of Allāh and with His Messenger, except for those with whom you made a treaty at al-Masjid al-Ḥarām? So as long as they are upright toward you,1 be upright toward them. Indeed, Allāh loves the righteous [who fear Him].

— Saheeh International

كَيْفَ

How

kayfa

وَإِن

while, if

wa-in

يَظْهَرُوا۟

they gain dominance

yaẓharū

عَلَيْكُمْ

over you

ʿalaykum

لَا

they do not regard (the ties)

يَرْقُبُوا۟

they do not regard (the ties)

yarqubū

فِيكُمْ

with you

fīkum

إِلًّۭا

(of) kinship

illan

وَلَا

and not

walā

ذِمَّةًۭ ۚ

covenant of protection

dhimmatan

يُرْضُونَكُم

They satisfy you

yur'ḍūnakum

بِأَفْوَٰهِهِمْ

with their mouths

bi-afwāhihim

وَتَأْبَىٰ

but refuse

watabā

قُلُوبُهُمْ

their hearts

qulūbuhum

وَأَكْثَرُهُمْ

and most of them

wa-aktharuhum

فَـٰسِقُونَ

(are) defiantly disobedient

fāsiqūna

٨

How [can there be a treaty] while, if they gain dominance over you, they do not observe concerning you any pact of kinship or covenant of protection? They satisfy you with their mouths, but their hearts refuse [compliance], and most of them are defiantly disobedient.

— Saheeh International

ٱشْتَرَوْا۟

They exchange

ish'taraw

بِـَٔايَـٰتِ

[with] the Verses of Allah

biāyāti

ٱللَّهِ

[with] the Verses of Allah

l-lahi

ثَمَنًۭا

(for) a little price

thamanan

قَلِيلًۭا

(for) a little price

qalīlan

فَصَدُّوا۟

and they hinder (people)

faṣaddū

عَن

from

ʿan

سَبِيلِهِۦٓ ۚ

His way

sabīlihi

إِنَّهُمْ

Indeed

innahum

سَآءَ

evil

sāa

مَا

(is) what

كَانُوا۟

they used to

kānū

يَعْمَلُونَ

do

yaʿmalūna

٩

They have exchanged the signs of Allāh for a small price and averted [people] from His way. Indeed, it was evil that they were doing.

— Saheeh International

لَا

Not

يَرْقُبُونَ

they respect (the ties)

yarqubūna

فِى

towards

مُؤْمِنٍ

a believer

mu'minin

إِلًّۭا

(of) kinship

illan

وَلَا

and not

walā

ذِمَّةًۭ ۚ

covenant of protection

dhimmatan

وَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ

And those

wa-ulāika

هُمُ

[they]

humu

ٱلْمُعْتَدُونَ

(are) the transgressors

l-muʿ'tadūna

١٠

They do not observe toward a believer any pact of kinship or covenant of protection. And it is they who are the transgressors.

— Saheeh International

فَإِن

But if

fa-in

تَابُوا۟

they repent

tābū

وَأَقَامُوا۟

and establish

wa-aqāmū

ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ

the prayer

l-ṣalata

وَءَاتَوُا۟

and give

waātawū

ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ

the zakah

l-zakata

فَإِخْوَٰنُكُمْ

then (they are) your brothers

fa-ikh'wānukum

فِى

in

ٱلدِّينِ ۗ

[the] religion

l-dīni

وَنُفَصِّلُ

And We explain in detail

wanufaṣṣilu

ٱلْـَٔايَـٰتِ

the Verses

l-āyāti

لِقَوْمٍۢ

for a people

liqawmin

يَعْلَمُونَ

(who) know

yaʿlamūna

١١

But if they repent, establish prayer, and give zakāh, then they are your brothers in religion; and We detail the verses for a people who know.

— Saheeh International

وَإِن

And if

wa-in

نَّكَثُوٓا۟

they break

nakathū

أَيْمَـٰنَهُم

their oaths

aymānahum

مِّنۢ

after

min

بَعْدِ

after

baʿdi

عَهْدِهِمْ

their treaty

ʿahdihim

وَطَعَنُوا۟

and defame

waṭaʿanū

فِى

[in]

دِينِكُمْ

your religion

dīnikum

فَقَـٰتِلُوٓا۟

then fight

faqātilū

أَئِمَّةَ

the leaders

a-immata

ٱلْكُفْرِ ۙ

(of) [the] disbelief

l-kuf'ri

إِنَّهُمْ

indeed, they

innahum

لَآ

no

أَيْمَـٰنَ

oaths

aymāna

لَهُمْ

for them

lahum

لَعَلَّهُمْ

so that they may

laʿallahum

يَنتَهُونَ

cease

yantahūna

١٢

And if they break their oaths after their treaty and defame your religion, then combat the leaders of disbelief, for indeed, there are no oaths [sacred] to them; [fight them that] they might cease.

— Saheeh International

أَلَا

Will not

alā

تُقَـٰتِلُونَ

you fight

tuqātilūna

قَوْمًۭا

a people

qawman

نَّكَثُوٓا۟

who broke

nakathū

أَيْمَـٰنَهُمْ

their oaths

aymānahum

وَهَمُّوا۟

and determined

wahammū

بِإِخْرَاجِ

to drive out

bi-ikh'rāji

ٱلرَّسُولِ

the Messenger

l-rasūli

وَهُم

and they

wahum

بَدَءُوكُمْ

began (to attack) you

badaūkum

أَوَّلَ

first

awwala

مَرَّةٍ ۚ

time

marratin

أَتَخْشَوْنَهُمْ ۚ

Do you fear them

atakhshawnahum

فَٱللَّهُ

But Allah

fal-lahu

أَحَقُّ

(has) more right

aḥaqqu

أَن

that

an

تَخْشَوْهُ

you should fear Him

takhshawhu

إِن

if

in

كُنتُم

you are

kuntum

مُّؤْمِنِينَ

believers

mu'minīna

١٣

Would you not fight against a people who broke their oaths and determined to expel the Messenger, and they had begun [the attack upon] you the first time? Do you fear them? But Allāh has more right that you should fear Him, if you are [truly] believers.

— Saheeh International

قَـٰتِلُوهُمْ

Fight them

qātilūhum

يُعَذِّبْهُمُ

Allah will punish them

yuʿadhib'humu

ٱللَّهُ

Allah will punish them

l-lahu

بِأَيْدِيكُمْ

by your hands

bi-aydīkum

وَيُخْزِهِمْ

and disgrace them

wayukh'zihim

وَيَنصُرْكُمْ

and give you victory

wayanṣur'kum

عَلَيْهِمْ

over them

ʿalayhim

وَيَشْفِ

and will heal

wayashfi

صُدُورَ

(the) breasts

ṣudūra

قَوْمٍۢ

(of) a people

qawmin

مُّؤْمِنِينَ

(who are) believers

mu'minīna

١٤

Fight them; Allāh will punish them by your hands and will disgrace them and give you victory over them and satisfy the breasts [i.e., desires] of a believing people

— Saheeh International

وَيُذْهِبْ

And remove

wayudh'hib

غَيْظَ

(the) anger

ghayẓa

قُلُوبِهِمْ ۗ

(of) their hearts

qulūbihim

وَيَتُوبُ

And Allah accepts repentance

wayatūbu

ٱللَّهُ

And Allah accepts repentance

l-lahu

عَلَىٰ

of

ʿalā

مَن

whom

man

يَشَآءُ ۗ

He wills

yashāu

وَٱللَّهُ

And Allah

wal-lahu

عَلِيمٌ

(is) All-Knower

ʿalīmun

حَكِيمٌ

All-Wise

ḥakīmun

١٥

And remove the fury in their [i.e., the believers'] hearts. And Allāh turns in forgiveness to whom He wills; and Allāh is Knowing and Wise.

— Saheeh International

أَمْ

Or

am

حَسِبْتُمْ

(do) you think

ḥasib'tum

أَن

that

an

تُتْرَكُوا۟

you would be left

tut'rakū

وَلَمَّا

while not

walammā

يَعْلَمِ

Allah made evident

yaʿlami

ٱللَّهُ

Allah made evident

l-lahu

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

جَـٰهَدُوا۟

strive

jāhadū

مِنكُمْ

among you

minkum

وَلَمْ

and not

walam

يَتَّخِذُوا۟

take

yattakhidhū

مِن

besides Allah

min

دُونِ

besides Allah

dūni

ٱللَّهِ

besides Allah

l-lahi

وَلَا

and not

walā

رَسُولِهِۦ

His Messenger

rasūlihi

وَلَا

and not

walā

ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ

the believers

l-mu'minīna

وَلِيجَةًۭ ۚ

(as) intimates

walījatan

وَٱللَّهُ

And Allah

wal-lahu

خَبِيرٌۢ

(is) All-Aware

khabīrun

بِمَا

of what

bimā

تَعْمَلُونَ

you do

taʿmalūna

١٦

Do you think that you will be left [as you are] while Allāh has not yet made evident those among you who strive [for His cause] and do not take other than Allāh, His Messenger and the believers as intimates? And Allāh is [fully] Aware of what you do.

— Saheeh International

مَا

(It) is not

كَانَ

(It) is not

kāna

لِلْمُشْرِكِينَ

for the polytheists

lil'mush'rikīna

أَن

that

an

يَعْمُرُوا۟

they maintain

yaʿmurū

مَسَـٰجِدَ

(the) masajid of Allah

masājida

ٱللَّهِ

(the) masajid of Allah

l-lahi

شَـٰهِدِينَ

(while) witnessing

shāhidīna

عَلَىٰٓ

against

ʿalā

أَنفُسِهِم

themselves

anfusihim

بِٱلْكُفْرِ ۚ

[with] disbelief

bil-kuf'ri

أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ

(For) those

ulāika

حَبِطَتْ

worthless

ḥabiṭat

أَعْمَـٰلُهُمْ

(are) their deeds

aʿmāluhum

وَفِى

and in

wafī

ٱلنَّارِ

the Fire

l-nāri

هُمْ

they

hum

خَـٰلِدُونَ

(will) abide forever

khālidūna

١٧

It is not for the polytheists to maintain the mosques of Allāh [while] witnessing against themselves with disbelief. [For] those, their deeds have become worthless, and in the Fire they will abide eternally.

— Saheeh International

إِنَّمَا

Only

innamā

يَعْمُرُ

will maintain

yaʿmuru

مَسَـٰجِدَ

(the) masajid of Allah

masājida

ٱللَّهِ

(the) masajid of Allah

l-lahi

مَنْ

(the one) who

man

ءَامَنَ

believes

āmana

بِٱللَّهِ

in Allah

bil-lahi

وَٱلْيَوْمِ

and the Day

wal-yawmi

ٱلْـَٔاخِرِ

the Last

l-ākhiri

وَأَقَامَ

and establishes

wa-aqāma

ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ

the prayer

l-ṣalata

وَءَاتَى

and gives

waātā

ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ

the zakah

l-zakata

وَلَمْ

and not

walam

يَخْشَ

fear

yakhsha

إِلَّا

except

illā

ٱللَّهَ ۖ

Allah

l-laha

فَعَسَىٰٓ

Then perhaps

faʿasā

أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ

those

ulāika

أَن

[that]

an

يَكُونُوا۟

they are

yakūnū

مِنَ

of

mina

ٱلْمُهْتَدِينَ

the guided ones

l-muh'tadīna

١٨

The mosques of Allāh are only to be maintained by those who believe in Allāh and the Last Day and establish prayer and give zakāh and do not fear except Allāh, for it is expected that those will be of the [rightly] guided.

— Saheeh International

۞ أَجَعَلْتُمْ

Do you make

ajaʿaltum

سِقَايَةَ

the providing of water

siqāyata

ٱلْحَآجِّ

(to) the pilgrims

l-ḥāji

وَعِمَارَةَ

and (the) maintenance

waʿimārata

ٱلْمَسْجِدِ

(of) Al-Masjid Al-Haraam

l-masjidi

ٱلْحَرَامِ

(of) Al-Masjid Al-Haraam

l-ḥarāmi

كَمَنْ

like (the one) who

kaman

ءَامَنَ

believes

āmana

بِٱللَّهِ

in Allah

bil-lahi

وَٱلْيَوْمِ

and the Day

wal-yawmi

ٱلْـَٔاخِرِ

the Last

l-ākhiri

وَجَـٰهَدَ

and strives

wajāhada

فِى

in

سَبِيلِ

(the) way

sabīli

ٱللَّهِ ۚ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

لَا

They are not equal

يَسْتَوُۥنَ

They are not equal

yastawūna

عِندَ

near

ʿinda

ٱللَّهِ ۗ

Allah

l-lahi

وَٱللَّهُ

And Allah

wal-lahu

لَا

(does) not

يَهْدِى

guide

yahdī

ٱلْقَوْمَ

the people

l-qawma

ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ

the wrongdoers

l-ẓālimīna

١٩

Have you made the providing of water for the pilgrim and the maintenance of al-Masjid al-Ḥarām equal to [the deeds of] one who believes in Allāh and the Last Day and strives in the cause of Allāh? They are not equal in the sight of Allāh. And Allāh does not guide the wrongdoing people.

— Saheeh International

ٱلَّذِينَ

Those who

alladhīna

ءَامَنُوا۟

believed

āmanū

وَهَاجَرُوا۟

and emigrated

wahājarū

وَجَـٰهَدُوا۟

and strove

wajāhadū

فِى

in

سَبِيلِ

(the) way

sabīli

ٱللَّهِ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

بِأَمْوَٰلِهِمْ

with their wealth

bi-amwālihim

وَأَنفُسِهِمْ

and their lives

wa-anfusihim

أَعْظَمُ

(are) greater

aʿẓamu

دَرَجَةً

(in) rank

darajatan

عِندَ

near

ʿinda

ٱللَّهِ ۚ

Allah

l-lahi

وَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ

And those

wa-ulāika

هُمُ

they

humu

ٱلْفَآئِزُونَ

(are) the successful

l-fāizūna

٢٠

The ones who have believed, emigrated and striven in the cause of Allāh with their wealth and their lives are greater in rank in the sight of Allāh. And it is those who are the attainers [of success].

— Saheeh International

يُبَشِّرُهُمْ

Their Lord gives them glad tidings

yubashiruhum

رَبُّهُم

Their Lord gives them glad tidings

rabbuhum

بِرَحْمَةٍۢ

of Mercy

biraḥmatin

مِّنْهُ

from Him

min'hu

وَرِضْوَٰنٍۢ

and Pleasure

wariḍ'wānin

وَجَنَّـٰتٍۢ

and Gardens

wajannātin

لَّهُمْ

for them

lahum

فِيهَا

in it

fīhā

نَعِيمٌۭ

(is) bliss

naʿīmun

مُّقِيمٌ

enduring

muqīmun

٢١

Their Lord gives them good tidings of mercy from Him and approval and of gardens for them wherein is enduring pleasure.

— Saheeh International

خَـٰلِدِينَ

(They will) abide

khālidīna

فِيهَآ

in it

fīhā

أَبَدًا ۚ

forever

abadan

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

عِندَهُۥٓ

with Him

ʿindahu

أَجْرٌ

(is) a reward

ajrun

عَظِيمٌۭ

great

ʿaẓīmun

٢٢

[They will be] abiding therein forever. Indeed, Allāh has with Him a great reward.

— Saheeh International

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا

O you

yāayyuhā

ٱلَّذِينَ

who

alladhīna

ءَامَنُوا۟

believe

āmanū

لَا

(Do) not

تَتَّخِذُوٓا۟

take

tattakhidhū

ءَابَآءَكُمْ

your fathers

ābāakum

وَإِخْوَٰنَكُمْ

and your brothers

wa-ikh'wānakum

أَوْلِيَآءَ

(as) allies

awliyāa

إِنِ

if

ini

ٱسْتَحَبُّوا۟

they prefer

is'taḥabbū

ٱلْكُفْرَ

[the] disbelief

l-kuf'ra

عَلَى

over

ʿalā

ٱلْإِيمَـٰنِ ۚ

[the] belief

l-īmāni

وَمَن

And whoever

waman

يَتَوَلَّهُم

takes them as allies

yatawallahum

مِّنكُمْ

among you

minkum

فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ

then those

fa-ulāika

هُمُ

[they]

humu

ٱلظَّـٰلِمُونَ

(are) the wrongdoers

l-ẓālimūna

٢٣

O you who have believed, do not take your fathers or your brothers as allies if they have preferred disbelief over belief. And whoever does so among you - then it is those who are the wrongdoers.

— Saheeh International

قُلْ

Say

qul

إِن

If

in

كَانَ

are

kāna

ءَابَآؤُكُمْ

your fathers

ābāukum

وَأَبْنَآؤُكُمْ

and your sons

wa-abnāukum

وَإِخْوَٰنُكُمْ

and your brothers

wa-ikh'wānukum

وَأَزْوَٰجُكُمْ

and your spouses

wa-azwājukum

وَعَشِيرَتُكُمْ

and your relatives

waʿashīratukum

وَأَمْوَٰلٌ

and wealth

wa-amwālun

ٱقْتَرَفْتُمُوهَا

that you have acquired

iq'taraftumūhā

وَتِجَـٰرَةٌۭ

and the commerce

watijāratun

تَخْشَوْنَ

you fear

takhshawna

كَسَادَهَا

a decline (in) it

kasādahā

وَمَسَـٰكِنُ

and the dwellings

wamasākinu

تَرْضَوْنَهَآ

you delight (in) it

tarḍawnahā

أَحَبَّ

(are) more beloved

aḥabba

إِلَيْكُم

to you

ilaykum

مِّنَ

than

mina

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

وَرَسُولِهِۦ

and His Messenger

warasūlihi

وَجِهَادٍۢ

and striving

wajihādin

فِى

in

سَبِيلِهِۦ

His way

sabīlihi

فَتَرَبَّصُوا۟

then wait

fatarabbaṣū

حَتَّىٰ

until

ḥattā

يَأْتِىَ

Allah brings

yatiya

ٱللَّهُ

Allah brings

l-lahu

بِأَمْرِهِۦ ۗ

His Command

bi-amrihi

وَٱللَّهُ

And Allah

wal-lahu

لَا

(does) not

يَهْدِى

guide

yahdī

ٱلْقَوْمَ

the people

l-qawma

ٱلْفَـٰسِقِينَ

the defiantly disobedient

l-fāsiqīna

٢٤

Say, [O Muḥammad], "If your fathers, your sons, your brothers, your wives, your relatives, wealth which you have obtained, commerce wherein you fear decline, and dwellings with which you are pleased are more beloved to you than Allāh and His Messenger and jihād [i.e., striving] in His cause, then wait until Allāh executes His command. And Allāh does not guide the defiantly disobedient people."

— Saheeh International

لَقَدْ

Verily

laqad

نَصَرَكُمُ

Allah helped you

naṣarakumu

ٱللَّهُ

Allah helped you

l-lahu

فِى

in

مَوَاطِنَ

regions

mawāṭina

كَثِيرَةٍۢ ۙ

many

kathīratin

وَيَوْمَ

and (on the) day

wayawma

حُنَيْنٍ ۙ

(of) Hunain

ḥunaynin

إِذْ

when

idh

أَعْجَبَتْكُمْ

pleased you

aʿjabatkum

كَثْرَتُكُمْ

your multitude

kathratukum

فَلَمْ

but not

falam

تُغْنِ

availed

tugh'ni

عَنكُمْ

you

ʿankum

شَيْـًۭٔا

anything

shayan

وَضَاقَتْ

and (was) straitened

waḍāqat

عَلَيْكُمُ

for you

ʿalaykumu

ٱلْأَرْضُ

the earth

l-arḍu

بِمَا

(in spite) of its vastness

bimā

رَحُبَتْ

(in spite) of its vastness

raḥubat

ثُمَّ

then

thumma

وَلَّيْتُم

you turned back

wallaytum

مُّدْبِرِينَ

fleeing

mud'birīna

٢٥

Allāh has already given you victory in many regions and [even] on the day of Ḥunayn, when your great number pleased you, but it did not avail you at all, and the earth was confining for you with [i.e., in spite of] its vastness; then you turned back, fleeing.

— Saheeh International

ثُمَّ

Then

thumma

أَنزَلَ

Allah sent down

anzala

ٱللَّهُ

Allah sent down

l-lahu

سَكِينَتَهُۥ

His tranquility

sakīnatahu

عَلَىٰ

on

ʿalā

رَسُولِهِۦ

His Messenger

rasūlihi

وَعَلَى

and on

waʿalā

ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ

the believers

l-mu'minīna

وَأَنزَلَ

and sent down

wa-anzala

جُنُودًۭا

forces

junūdan

لَّمْ

which you did not see

lam

تَرَوْهَا

which you did not see

tarawhā

وَعَذَّبَ

and He punished

waʿadhaba

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

كَفَرُوا۟ ۚ

disbelieved

kafarū

وَذَٰلِكَ

And that

wadhālika

جَزَآءُ

(is) the recompense

jazāu

ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ

(of) the disbelievers

l-kāfirīna

٢٦

Then Allāh sent down His tranquility upon His Messenger and upon the believers and sent down soldiers [i.e., angels] whom you did not see and punished those who disbelieved. And that is the recompense of the disbelievers.

— Saheeh International

ثُمَّ

Then

thumma

يَتُوبُ

Allah accepts repentance

yatūbu

ٱللَّهُ

Allah accepts repentance

l-lahu

مِنۢ

after

min

بَعْدِ

after

baʿdi

ذَٰلِكَ

that

dhālika

عَلَىٰ

for

ʿalā

مَن

whom

man

يَشَآءُ ۗ

He wills

yashāu

وَٱللَّهُ

And Allah

wal-lahu

غَفُورٌۭ

(is) Oft-Forgiving

ghafūrun

رَّحِيمٌۭ

Most Merciful

raḥīmun

٢٧

Then Allāh will accept repentance after that for whom He wills; and Allāh is Forgiving and Merciful.

— Saheeh International

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا

O you who believe

yāayyuhā

ٱلَّذِينَ

O you who believe

alladhīna

ءَامَنُوٓا۟

O you who believe

āmanū

إِنَّمَا

Indeed

innamā

ٱلْمُشْرِكُونَ

the polytheists

l-mush'rikūna

نَجَسٌۭ

(are) unclean

najasun

فَلَا

so let them not come near

falā

يَقْرَبُوا۟

so let them not come near

yaqrabū

ٱلْمَسْجِدَ

Al-Masjid Al-Haraam

l-masjida

ٱلْحَرَامَ

Al-Masjid Al-Haraam

l-ḥarāma

بَعْدَ

after

baʿda

عَامِهِمْ

this, their (final) year

ʿāmihim

هَـٰذَا ۚ

this, their (final) year

hādhā

وَإِنْ

And if

wa-in

خِفْتُمْ

you fear

khif'tum

عَيْلَةًۭ

poverty

ʿaylatan

فَسَوْفَ

then soon

fasawfa

يُغْنِيكُمُ

Allah will enrich you

yugh'nīkumu

ٱللَّهُ

Allah will enrich you

l-lahu

مِن

from

min

فَضْلِهِۦٓ

His Bounty

faḍlihi

إِن

if

in

شَآءَ ۚ

He wills

shāa

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

عَلِيمٌ

(is) All-Knower

ʿalīmun

حَكِيمٌۭ

All-Wise

ḥakīmun

٢٨

O you who have believed, indeed the polytheists are unclean, so let them not approach al-Masjid al-Ḥarām after this, their [final] year. And if you fear privation, Allāh will enrich you from His bounty if He wills. Indeed, Allāh is Knowing and Wise.

— Saheeh International

قَـٰتِلُوا۟

Fight

qātilū

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

لَا

(do) not

يُؤْمِنُونَ

believe

yu'minūna

بِٱللَّهِ

in Allah

bil-lahi

وَلَا

and not

walā

بِٱلْيَوْمِ

in the Day

bil-yawmi

ٱلْـَٔاخِرِ

the Last

l-ākhiri

وَلَا

and not

walā

يُحَرِّمُونَ

they make unlawful

yuḥarrimūna

مَا

what

حَرَّمَ

Allah has made unlawful

ḥarrama

ٱللَّهُ

Allah has made unlawful

l-lahu

وَرَسُولُهُۥ

and His Messenger

warasūluhu

وَلَا

and not

walā

يَدِينُونَ

they acknowledge

yadīnūna

دِينَ

(the) religion

dīna

ٱلْحَقِّ

(of) the truth

l-ḥaqi

مِنَ

from

mina

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

أُوتُوا۟

were given

ūtū

ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ

the Scripture

l-kitāba

حَتَّىٰ

until

ḥattā

يُعْطُوا۟

they pay

yuʿ'ṭū

ٱلْجِزْيَةَ

the jizyah

l-jiz'yata

عَن

willingly

ʿan

يَدٍۢ

willingly

yadin

وَهُمْ

while they

wahum

صَـٰغِرُونَ

(are) subdued

ṣāghirūna

٢٩

Fight against those who do not believe in Allāh or in the Last Day and who do not consider unlawful what Allāh and His Messenger have made unlawful and who do not adopt the religion of truth [i.e., Islām] from those who were given the Scripture - [fight] until they give the jizyah1 willingly while they are humbled.

— Saheeh International

وَقَالَتِ

And said

waqālati

ٱلْيَهُودُ

the Jews

l-yahūdu

عُزَيْرٌ

Uzair

ʿuzayrun

ٱبْنُ

(is) son

ub'nu

ٱللَّهِ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

وَقَالَتِ

And said

waqālati

ٱلنَّصَـٰرَى

the Christians

l-naṣārā

ٱلْمَسِيحُ

Messiah

l-masīḥu

ٱبْنُ

(is) son

ub'nu

ٱللَّهِ ۖ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

ذَٰلِكَ

That

dhālika

قَوْلُهُم

(is) their saying

qawluhum

بِأَفْوَٰهِهِمْ ۖ

with their mouths

bi-afwāhihim

يُضَـٰهِـُٔونَ

they imitate

yuḍāhiūna

قَوْلَ

the saying

qawla

ٱلَّذِينَ

(of) those who

alladhīna

كَفَرُوا۟

disbelieved

kafarū

مِن

before

min

قَبْلُ ۚ

before

qablu

قَـٰتَلَهُمُ

(May) Allah destroy them

qātalahumu

ٱللَّهُ ۚ

(May) Allah destroy them

l-lahu

أَنَّىٰ

How

annā

يُؤْفَكُونَ

deluded are they

yu'fakūna

٣٠

The Jews say, "Ezra is the son of Allāh"; and the Christians say, "The Messiah is the son of Allāh." That is their statement from their mouths; they imitate the saying of those who disbelieved before [them]. May Allāh destroy them; how are they deluded?

— Saheeh International

ٱتَّخَذُوٓا۟

They have taken

ittakhadhū

أَحْبَارَهُمْ

their rabbis

aḥbārahum

وَرُهْبَـٰنَهُمْ

and their monks

waruh'bānahum

أَرْبَابًۭا

(as) Lords

arbāban

مِّن

besides

min

دُونِ

besides

dūni

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

وَٱلْمَسِيحَ

and the Messiah

wal-masīḥa

ٱبْنَ

son

ib'na

مَرْيَمَ

(of) Maryam

maryama

وَمَآ

And not

wamā

أُمِرُوٓا۟

they were commanded

umirū

إِلَّا

except

illā

لِيَعْبُدُوٓا۟

that they worship

liyaʿbudū

إِلَـٰهًۭا

One God

ilāhan

وَٰحِدًۭا ۖ

One God

wāḥidan

لَّآ

(There) is no

إِلَـٰهَ

god

ilāha

إِلَّا

except

illā

هُوَ ۚ

Him

huwa

سُبْحَـٰنَهُۥ

Glory be to Him

sub'ḥānahu

عَمَّا

from what

ʿammā

يُشْرِكُونَ

they associate (with Him)

yush'rikūna

٣١

They have taken their scholars and monks as lords besides Allāh,1 and [also] the Messiah, the son of Mary.2 And they were not commanded except to worship one God; there is no deity except Him. Exalted is He above whatever they associate with Him.

— Saheeh International

يُرِيدُونَ

They want

yurīdūna

أَن

to

an

يُطْفِـُٔوا۟

extinguish

yuṭ'fiū

نُورَ

Allah's light

nūra

ٱللَّهِ

Allah's light

l-lahi

بِأَفْوَٰهِهِمْ

with their mouths

bi-afwāhihim

وَيَأْبَى

but Allah refuses

wayabā

ٱللَّهُ

but Allah refuses

l-lahu

إِلَّآ

except

illā

أَن

to

an

يُتِمَّ

perfect

yutimma

نُورَهُۥ

His Light

nūrahu

وَلَوْ

even if

walaw

كَرِهَ

the disbelievers dislike (it)

kariha

ٱلْكَـٰفِرُونَ

the disbelievers dislike (it)

l-kāfirūna

٣٢

They want to extinguish the light of Allāh with their mouths, but Allāh refuses except to perfect His light, although the disbelievers dislike it.

— Saheeh International

هُوَ

He

huwa

ٱلَّذِىٓ

(is) the One Who

alladhī

أَرْسَلَ

has sent

arsala

رَسُولَهُۥ

His Messenger

rasūlahu

بِٱلْهُدَىٰ

with the guidance

bil-hudā

وَدِينِ

and the religion

wadīni

ٱلْحَقِّ

(of) [the] truth

l-ḥaqi

لِيُظْهِرَهُۥ

to manifest it

liyuẓ'hirahu

عَلَى

over

ʿalā

ٱلدِّينِ

all religions

l-dīni

كُلِّهِۦ

all religions

kullihi

وَلَوْ

Even if

walaw

كَرِهَ

dislike (it)

kariha

ٱلْمُشْرِكُونَ

the polytheists

l-mush'rikūna

٣٣

It is He who has sent His Messenger with guidance and the religion of truth to manifest it over all religion, although they who associate others with Allāh dislike it.

— Saheeh International

۞ يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا

O you who believe

yāayyuhā

ٱلَّذِينَ

O you who believe

alladhīna

ءَامَنُوٓا۟

O you who believe

āmanū

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

كَثِيرًۭا

many

kathīran

مِّنَ

of

mina

ٱلْأَحْبَارِ

the rabbis

l-aḥbāri

وَٱلرُّهْبَانِ

and the monks

wal-ruh'bāni

لَيَأْكُلُونَ

surely eat

layakulūna

أَمْوَٰلَ

(the) wealth

amwāla

ٱلنَّاسِ

(of) the people

l-nāsi

بِٱلْبَـٰطِلِ

in falsehood

bil-bāṭili

وَيَصُدُّونَ

and hinder

wayaṣuddūna

عَن

from

ʿan

سَبِيلِ

(the) way

sabīli

ٱللَّهِ ۗ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

وَٱلَّذِينَ

And those who

wa-alladhīna

يَكْنِزُونَ

hoard

yaknizūna

ٱلذَّهَبَ

the gold

l-dhahaba

وَٱلْفِضَّةَ

and the silver

wal-fiḍata

وَلَا

and (do) not

walā

يُنفِقُونَهَا

spend it

yunfiqūnahā

فِى

in

سَبِيلِ

(the) way

sabīli

ٱللَّهِ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

فَبَشِّرْهُم

[so] give them tidings

fabashir'hum

بِعَذَابٍ

of a punishment

biʿadhābin

أَلِيمٍۢ

painful

alīmin

٣٤

O you who have believed, indeed many of the scholars and the monks devour the wealth of people unjustly1 and avert [them] from the way of Allāh. And those who hoard gold and silver and spend it not in the way of Allāh - give them tidings of a painful punishment.

— Saheeh International

يَوْمَ

(The) Day

yawma

يُحْمَىٰ

it will be heated [on it]

yuḥ'mā

عَلَيْهَا

it will be heated [on it]

ʿalayhā

فِى

in

نَارِ

the Fire

nāri

جَهَنَّمَ

(of) Hell

jahannama

فَتُكْوَىٰ

and will be branded

fatuk'wā

بِهَا

with it

bihā

جِبَاهُهُمْ

their foreheads

jibāhuhum

وَجُنُوبُهُمْ

and their flanks

wajunūbuhum

وَظُهُورُهُمْ ۖ

and their backs

waẓuhūruhum

هَـٰذَا

This

hādhā

مَا

(is) what

كَنَزْتُمْ

you hoarded

kanaztum

لِأَنفُسِكُمْ

for yourselves

li-anfusikum

فَذُوقُوا۟

so taste

fadhūqū

مَا

what

كُنتُمْ

you used to

kuntum

تَكْنِزُونَ

hoard

taknizūna

٣٥

The Day when it1 will be heated in the fire of Hell and seared therewith will be their foreheads, their flanks, and their backs, [it will be said], "This is what you hoarded for yourselves, so taste what you used to hoard."

— Saheeh International

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

عِدَّةَ

(the) number

ʿiddata

ٱلشُّهُورِ

(of) the months

l-shuhūri

عِندَ

with

ʿinda

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

ٱثْنَا

(is) twelve

ith'nā

عَشَرَ

(is) twelve

ʿashara

شَهْرًۭا

months

shahran

فِى

in

كِتَـٰبِ

(the) ordinance

kitābi

ٱللَّهِ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

يَوْمَ

(from the) Day

yawma

خَلَقَ

He created

khalaqa

ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ

the heavens

l-samāwāti

وَٱلْأَرْضَ

and the earth

wal-arḍa

مِنْهَآ

of them

min'hā

أَرْبَعَةٌ

four

arbaʿatun

حُرُمٌۭ ۚ

(are) sacred

ḥurumun

ذَٰلِكَ

That

dhālika

ٱلدِّينُ

(is) the religion

l-dīnu

ٱلْقَيِّمُ ۚ

the upright

l-qayimu

فَلَا

so (do) not

falā

تَظْلِمُوا۟

wrong

taẓlimū

فِيهِنَّ

therein

fīhinna

أَنفُسَكُمْ ۚ

yourselves

anfusakum

وَقَـٰتِلُوا۟

And fight

waqātilū

ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ

the polytheists

l-mush'rikīna

كَآفَّةًۭ

all together

kāffatan

كَمَا

as

kamā

يُقَـٰتِلُونَكُمْ

they fight you

yuqātilūnakum

كَآفَّةًۭ ۚ

all together

kāffatan

وَٱعْلَمُوٓا۟

And know

wa-iʿ'lamū

أَنَّ

that

anna

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

مَعَ

(is) with

maʿa

ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ

the righteous

l-mutaqīna

٣٦

Indeed, the number of months with Allāh is twelve [lunar] months in the register of Allāh [from] the day He created the heavens and the earth; of these, four are sacred.1 That is the correct religion [i.e., way], so do not wrong yourselves during them.2 And fight against the disbelievers collectively as they fight against you collectively. And know that Allāh is with the righteous [who fear Him].

— Saheeh International

إِنَّمَا

Indeed

innamā

ٱلنَّسِىٓءُ

the postponing

l-nasīu

زِيَادَةٌۭ

(is) an increase

ziyādatun

فِى

in

ٱلْكُفْرِ ۖ

the disbelief

l-kuf'ri

يُضَلُّ

are led astray

yuḍallu

بِهِ

by it

bihi

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

كَفَرُوا۟

disbelieve

kafarū

يُحِلُّونَهُۥ

They make it lawful

yuḥillūnahu

عَامًۭا

one year

ʿāman

وَيُحَرِّمُونَهُۥ

and make it unlawful

wayuḥarrimūnahu

عَامًۭا

(another) year

ʿāman

لِّيُوَاطِـُٔوا۟

to adjust

liyuwāṭiū

عِدَّةَ

the number

ʿiddata

مَا

which

حَرَّمَ

Allah has made unlawful

ḥarrama

ٱللَّهُ

Allah has made unlawful

l-lahu

فَيُحِلُّوا۟

and making lawful

fayuḥillū

مَا

what

حَرَّمَ

Allah has made unlawful

ḥarrama

ٱللَّهُ ۚ

Allah has made unlawful

l-lahu

زُيِّنَ

Is made fair-seeming

zuyyina

لَهُمْ

to them

lahum

سُوٓءُ

(the) evil

sūu

أَعْمَـٰلِهِمْ ۗ

(of) their deeds

aʿmālihim

وَٱللَّهُ

And Allah

wal-lahu

لَا

(does) not

يَهْدِى

guide

yahdī

ٱلْقَوْمَ

the people

l-qawma

ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ

the disbelievers

l-kāfirīna

٣٧

Indeed, the postponing [of restriction within sacred months] is an increase in disbelief by which those who have disbelieved are led [further] astray. They make it1 lawful one year and unlawful another year to correspond to the number made unlawful by Allāh2 and [thus] make lawful what Allāh has made unlawful. Made pleasing to them is the evil of their deeds; and Allāh does not guide the disbelieving people.

— Saheeh International

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا

O you who believe

yāayyuhā

ٱلَّذِينَ

O you who believe

alladhīna

ءَامَنُوا۟

O you who believe

āmanū

مَا

What

لَكُمْ

(is the matter) with you

lakum

إِذَا

when

idhā

قِيلَ

it is said

qīla

لَكُمُ

to you

lakumu

ٱنفِرُوا۟

go forth

infirū

فِى

in

سَبِيلِ

(the) way

sabīli

ٱللَّهِ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

ٱثَّاقَلْتُمْ

you cling heavily

ithāqaltum

إِلَى

to

ilā

ٱلْأَرْضِ ۚ

the earth

l-arḍi

أَرَضِيتُم

Are you pleased

araḍītum

بِٱلْحَيَوٰةِ

with the life

bil-ḥayati

ٱلدُّنْيَا

(of) the world

l-dun'yā

مِنَ

(rather) than

mina

ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ ۚ

the Hereafter

l-ākhirati

فَمَا

But what

famā

مَتَـٰعُ

(is the) enjoyment

matāʿu

ٱلْحَيَوٰةِ

(of) the life

l-ḥayati

ٱلدُّنْيَا

(of) the world

l-dun'yā

فِى

in (comparison to)

ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ

the hereafter

l-ākhirati

إِلَّا

except

illā

قَلِيلٌ

a little

qalīlun

٣٨

O you who have believed, what is [the matter] with you that, when you are told to go forth in the cause of Allāh, you adhere heavily to the earth?1 Are you satisfied with the life of this world rather than the Hereafter? But what is the enjoyment of worldly life compared to the Hereafter except a [very] little.

— Saheeh International

إِلَّا

If not

illā

تَنفِرُوا۟

you go forth

tanfirū

يُعَذِّبْكُمْ

He will punish you

yuʿadhib'kum

عَذَابًا

(with) a painful punishment

ʿadhāban

أَلِيمًۭا

(with) a painful punishment

alīman

وَيَسْتَبْدِلْ

and will replace you

wayastabdil

قَوْمًا

(with) a people

qawman

غَيْرَكُمْ

other than you

ghayrakum

وَلَا

and not

walā

تَضُرُّوهُ

you can harm Him

taḍurrūhu

شَيْـًۭٔا ۗ

(in) anything

shayan

وَٱللَّهُ

And Allah

wal-lahu

عَلَىٰ

(is) on

ʿalā

كُلِّ

every

kulli

شَىْءٍۢ

thing

shayin

قَدِيرٌ

All-Powerful

qadīrun

٣٩

If you do not go forth, He will punish you with a painful punishment and will replace you with another people, and you will not harm Him at all. And Allāh is over all things competent.

— Saheeh International

إِلَّا

If not

تَنصُرُوهُ

you help him

tanṣurūhu

فَقَدْ

certainly

faqad

نَصَرَهُ

Allah helped him

naṣarahu

ٱللَّهُ

Allah helped him

l-lahu

إِذْ

when

idh

أَخْرَجَهُ

drove him out

akhrajahu

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

كَفَرُوا۟

disbelieved

kafarū

ثَانِىَ

the second

thāniya

ٱثْنَيْنِ

(of) the two

ith'nayni

إِذْ

when

idh

هُمَا

they both

humā

فِى

(were) in

ٱلْغَارِ

the cave

l-ghāri

إِذْ

when

idh

يَقُولُ

he said

yaqūlu

لِصَـٰحِبِهِۦ

to his companion

liṣāḥibihi

لَا

(Do) not

تَحْزَنْ

grieve

taḥzan

إِنَّ

indeed

inna

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

مَعَنَا ۖ

(is) with us

maʿanā

فَأَنزَلَ

Then Allah sent down

fa-anzala

ٱللَّهُ

Then Allah sent down

l-lahu

سَكِينَتَهُۥ

His tranquility

sakīnatahu

عَلَيْهِ

upon him

ʿalayhi

وَأَيَّدَهُۥ

and supported him

wa-ayyadahu

بِجُنُودٍۢ

with forces

bijunūdin

لَّمْ

which you did not see

lam

تَرَوْهَا

which you did not see

tarawhā

وَجَعَلَ

and made

wajaʿala

كَلِمَةَ

(the) word

kalimata

ٱلَّذِينَ

(of) those who

alladhīna

كَفَرُوا۟

disbelieved

kafarū

ٱلسُّفْلَىٰ ۗ

the lowest

l-suf'lā

وَكَلِمَةُ

while (the) Word

wakalimatu

ٱللَّهِ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

هِىَ

it (is)

hiya

ٱلْعُلْيَا ۗ

the highest

l-ʿul'yā

وَٱللَّهُ

And Allah

wal-lahu

عَزِيزٌ

(is) All-Mighty

ʿazīzun

حَكِيمٌ

All-Wise

ḥakīmun

٤٠

If you do not aid him [i.e., the Prophet (ﷺ)] - Allāh has already aided him when those who disbelieved had driven him out [of Makkah] as one of two,1 when they were in the cave and he [i.e., Muḥammad (ﷺ)] said to his companion, "Do not grieve; indeed Allāh is with us." And Allāh sent down His tranquility upon him and supported him with soldiers [i.e., angels] you did not see and made the word2 of those who disbelieved the lowest,3 while the word of Allāh4 - that is the highest. And Allāh is Exalted in Might and Wise.

— Saheeh International

ٱنفِرُوا۟

Go forth

infirū

خِفَافًۭا

light

khifāfan

وَثِقَالًۭا

or heavy

wathiqālan

وَجَـٰهِدُوا۟

and strive

wajāhidū

بِأَمْوَٰلِكُمْ

with your wealth

bi-amwālikum

وَأَنفُسِكُمْ

and your lives

wa-anfusikum

فِى

in

سَبِيلِ

(the) way

sabīli

ٱللَّهِ ۚ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

ذَٰلِكُمْ

That

dhālikum

خَيْرٌۭ

(is) better

khayrun

لَّكُمْ

for you

lakum

إِن

if

in

كُنتُمْ

you

kuntum

تَعْلَمُونَ

know

taʿlamūna

٤١

Go forth, whether light or heavy,1 and strive with your wealth and your lives in the cause of Allāh. That is better for you, if you only knew.

— Saheeh International

لَوْ

If

law

كَانَ

it had been

kāna

عَرَضًۭا

a gain

ʿaraḍan

قَرِيبًۭا

near

qarīban

وَسَفَرًۭا

and a journey

wasafaran

قَاصِدًۭا

easy

qāṣidan

لَّٱتَّبَعُوكَ

surely they (would) have followed you

la-ittabaʿūka

وَلَـٰكِنۢ

but

walākin

بَعُدَتْ

was long

baʿudat

عَلَيْهِمُ

for them

ʿalayhimu

ٱلشُّقَّةُ ۚ

the distance

l-shuqatu

وَسَيَحْلِفُونَ

And they will swear

wasayaḥlifūna

بِٱللَّهِ

by Allah

bil-lahi

لَوِ

If

lawi

ٱسْتَطَعْنَا

we were able

is'taṭaʿnā

لَخَرَجْنَا

certainly we (would) have come forth

lakharajnā

مَعَكُمْ

with you

maʿakum

يُهْلِكُونَ

They destroy

yuh'likūna

أَنفُسَهُمْ

their own selves

anfusahum

وَٱللَّهُ

and Allah

wal-lahu

يَعْلَمُ

knows

yaʿlamu

إِنَّهُمْ

(that) indeed, they

innahum

لَكَـٰذِبُونَ

(are) surely liars

lakādhibūna

٤٢

Had it been a near [i.e., easy] gain and a moderate trip, they [i.e., the hypocrites] would have followed you, but distant to them was the journey. And they will swear by Allāh,1 "If we were able, we would have gone forth with you," destroying themselves [through false oaths], and Allāh knows that indeed they are liars.

— Saheeh International

عَفَا

(May) Allah forgive

ʿafā

ٱللَّهُ

(May) Allah forgive

l-lahu

عَنكَ

you

ʿanka

لِمَ

Why (did)

lima

أَذِنتَ

you grant leave

adhinta

لَهُمْ

to them

lahum

حَتَّىٰ

until

ḥattā

يَتَبَيَّنَ

(became) evident

yatabayyana

لَكَ

to you

laka

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

صَدَقُوا۟

were truthful

ṣadaqū

وَتَعْلَمَ

and you knew

wataʿlama

ٱلْكَـٰذِبِينَ

the liars

l-kādhibīna

٤٣

Allāh has pardoned you, [O Muḥammad, but] why did you give them permission [to remain behind]? [You should not have] until it was evident to you who were truthful and you knew [who were] the liars.

— Saheeh International

لَا

(Would) not ask your permission

يَسْتَـْٔذِنُكَ

(Would) not ask your permission

yastadhinuka

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

يُؤْمِنُونَ

believe

yu'minūna

بِٱللَّهِ

in Allah

bil-lahi

وَٱلْيَوْمِ

and the Day

wal-yawmi

ٱلْـَٔاخِرِ

the Last

l-ākhiri

أَن

that

an

يُجَـٰهِدُوا۟

they strive

yujāhidū

بِأَمْوَٰلِهِمْ

with their wealth

bi-amwālihim

وَأَنفُسِهِمْ ۗ

and their lives

wa-anfusihim

وَٱللَّهُ

And Allah

wal-lahu

عَلِيمٌۢ

(is) All-Knower

ʿalīmun

بِٱلْمُتَّقِينَ

of the righteous

bil-mutaqīna

٤٤

Those who believe in Allāh and the Last Day would not ask permission of you to be excused from striving [i.e., fighting] with their wealth and their lives. And Allāh is Knowing of those who fear Him.

— Saheeh International

إِنَّمَا

Only

innamā

يَسْتَـْٔذِنُكَ

ask your leave

yastadhinuka

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

لَا

(do) not

يُؤْمِنُونَ

believe

yu'minūna

بِٱللَّهِ

in Allah

bil-lahi

وَٱلْيَوْمِ

and the Day

wal-yawmi

ٱلْـَٔاخِرِ

the Last

l-ākhiri

وَٱرْتَابَتْ

and (are in) doubts

wa-ir'tābat

قُلُوبُهُمْ

their hearts

qulūbuhum

فَهُمْ

so they

fahum

فِى

in

رَيْبِهِمْ

their doubts

raybihim

يَتَرَدَّدُونَ

they waver

yataraddadūna

٤٥

Only those would ask permission of you who do not believe in Allāh and the Last Day and whose hearts have doubted, and they, in their doubt, are hesitating.

— Saheeh International

۞ وَلَوْ

And if

walaw

أَرَادُوا۟

they had wished

arādū

ٱلْخُرُوجَ

(to) go forth

l-khurūja

لَأَعَدُّوا۟

surely they (would) have prepared

la-aʿaddū

لَهُۥ

for it

lahu

عُدَّةًۭ

(some) preparation

ʿuddatan

وَلَـٰكِن

But

walākin

كَرِهَ

Allah disliked

kariha

ٱللَّهُ

Allah disliked

l-lahu

ٱنۢبِعَاثَهُمْ

their being sent

inbiʿāthahum

فَثَبَّطَهُمْ

so He made them lag behind

fathabbaṭahum

وَقِيلَ

and it was said

waqīla

ٱقْعُدُوا۟

Sit

uq'ʿudū

مَعَ

with

maʿa

ٱلْقَـٰعِدِينَ

those who sit

l-qāʿidīna

٤٦

And if they had intended to go forth, they would have prepared for it [some] preparation. But Allāh disliked their being sent, so He kept them back, and they were told, "Remain [behind] with those who remain."1

— Saheeh International

لَوْ

If

law

خَرَجُوا۟

they (had) gone forth

kharajū

فِيكُم

with you

fīkum

مَّا

not

زَادُوكُمْ

they (would) have increased you

zādūkum

إِلَّا

except

illā

خَبَالًۭا

(in) confusion

khabālan

وَلَأَوْضَعُوا۟

and would have been active

wala-awḍaʿū

خِلَـٰلَكُمْ

in your midst

khilālakum

يَبْغُونَكُمُ

seeking (for) you

yabghūnakumu

ٱلْفِتْنَةَ

dissension

l-fit'nata

وَفِيكُمْ

And among you (are some)

wafīkum

سَمَّـٰعُونَ

who would have listened

sammāʿūna

لَهُمْ ۗ

to them

lahum

وَٱللَّهُ

And Allah

wal-lahu

عَلِيمٌۢ

(is) All-Knower

ʿalīmun

بِٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ

of the wrongdoers

bil-ẓālimīna

٤٧

Had they gone forth with you, they would not have increased you except in confusion, and they would have been active among you, seeking [to cause] you fitnah [i.e., chaos and dissension]. And among you are avid listeners to them. And Allāh is Knowing of the wrongdoers.

— Saheeh International

لَقَدِ

Verily

laqadi

ٱبْتَغَوُا۟

they had sought

ib'taghawū

ٱلْفِتْنَةَ

dissension

l-fit'nata

مِن

before

min

قَبْلُ

before

qablu

وَقَلَّبُوا۟

and had upset

waqallabū

لَكَ

for you

laka

ٱلْأُمُورَ

the matters

l-umūra

حَتَّىٰ

until

ḥattā

جَآءَ

came

jāa

ٱلْحَقُّ

the truth

l-ḥaqu

وَظَهَرَ

and became manifest

waẓahara

أَمْرُ

(the) Order of Allah

amru

ٱللَّهِ

(the) Order of Allah

l-lahi

وَهُمْ

while they

wahum

كَـٰرِهُونَ

disliked (it)

kārihūna

٤٨

They had already desired dissension before and had upset matters for you1 until the truth came and the ordinance [i.e., victory] of Allāh appeared, while they were averse.

— Saheeh International

وَمِنْهُم

And among them

wamin'hum

مَّن

(is he) who

man

يَقُولُ

says

yaqūlu

ٱئْذَن

Grant me leave

i'dhan

لِّى

Grant me leave

وَلَا

and (do) not

walā

تَفْتِنِّىٓ ۚ

put me to trial

taftinnī

أَلَا

Surely

alā

فِى

in

ٱلْفِتْنَةِ

the trial

l-fit'nati

سَقَطُوا۟ ۗ

they have fallen

saqaṭū

وَإِنَّ

And indeed

wa-inna

جَهَنَّمَ

Hell

jahannama

لَمُحِيطَةٌۢ

(will) surely surround

lamuḥīṭatun

بِٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ

the disbelievers

bil-kāfirīna

٤٩

And among them is he who says, "Permit me [to remain at home] and do not put me to trial." Unquestionably, into trial they have fallen.1 And indeed, Hell will encompass the disbelievers.

— Saheeh International

إِن

If

in

تُصِبْكَ

befalls you

tuṣib'ka

حَسَنَةٌۭ

good

ḥasanatun

تَسُؤْهُمْ ۖ

it distresses them

tasu'hum

وَإِن

but if

wa-in

تُصِبْكَ

befalls you

tuṣib'ka

مُصِيبَةٌۭ

a calamity

muṣībatun

يَقُولُوا۟

they say

yaqūlū

قَدْ

Verily

qad

أَخَذْنَآ

we took

akhadhnā

أَمْرَنَا

our matter

amranā

مِن

before

min

قَبْلُ

before

qablu

وَيَتَوَلَّوا۟

And they turn away

wayatawallaw

وَّهُمْ

while they

wahum

فَرِحُونَ

(are) rejoicing

fariḥūna

٥٠

If good befalls you, it distresses them; but if disaster strikes you, they say, "We took our matter [in hand] before,"1 and turn away while they are rejoicing.

— Saheeh International

قُل

Say

qul

لَّن

Never

lan

يُصِيبَنَآ

will befall us

yuṣībanā

إِلَّا

except

illā

مَا

what

كَتَبَ

Allah has decreed

kataba

ٱللَّهُ

Allah has decreed

l-lahu

لَنَا

for us

lanā

هُوَ

He

huwa

مَوْلَىٰنَا ۚ

(is) our Protector

mawlānā

وَعَلَى

And on

waʿalā

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

فَلْيَتَوَكَّلِ

[so] let the believers put (their) trust

falyatawakkali

ٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ

[so] let the believers put (their) trust

l-mu'minūna

٥١

Say, "Never will we be struck except by what Allāh has decreed for us; He is our protector." And upon Allāh let the believers rely.

— Saheeh International

قُلْ

Say

qul

هَلْ

Do

hal

تَرَبَّصُونَ

you await

tarabbaṣūna

بِنَآ

for us

binā

إِلَّآ

except

illā

إِحْدَى

one

iḥ'dā

ٱلْحُسْنَيَيْنِ ۖ

(of) the two best (things)

l-ḥus'nayayni

وَنَحْنُ

while we

wanaḥnu

نَتَرَبَّصُ

[we] await

natarabbaṣu

بِكُمْ

for you

bikum

أَن

that

an

يُصِيبَكُمُ

Allah will afflict you

yuṣībakumu

ٱللَّهُ

Allah will afflict you

l-lahu

بِعَذَابٍۢ

with a punishment

biʿadhābin

مِّنْ

from

min

عِندِهِۦٓ

[near] Him

ʿindihi

أَوْ

or

aw

بِأَيْدِينَا ۖ

by our hands

bi-aydīnā

فَتَرَبَّصُوٓا۟

So wait

fatarabbaṣū

إِنَّا

indeed, we

innā

مَعَكُم

with you

maʿakum

مُّتَرَبِّصُونَ

(are) waiting

mutarabbiṣūna

٥٢

Say, "Do you await for us except one of the two best things [i.e., martyrdom or victory] while we await for you that Allāh will afflict you with punishment from Himself or at our hands? So wait; indeed we, along with you, are waiting."

— Saheeh International

قُلْ

Say

qul

أَنفِقُوا۟

Spend

anfiqū

طَوْعًا

willingly

ṭawʿan

أَوْ

or

aw

كَرْهًۭا

unwillingly

karhan

لَّن

never

lan

يُتَقَبَّلَ

will be accepted

yutaqabbala

مِنكُمْ ۖ

from you

minkum

إِنَّكُمْ

Indeed, you

innakum

كُنتُمْ

[you] are

kuntum

قَوْمًۭا

a people

qawman

فَـٰسِقِينَ

defiantly disobedient

fāsiqīna

٥٣

Say, "Spend willingly or unwillingly; never will it be accepted from you. Indeed, you have been a defiantly disobedient people."

— Saheeh International

وَمَا

And not

wamā

مَنَعَهُمْ

prevents them

manaʿahum

أَن

that

an

تُقْبَلَ

is accepted

tuq'bala

مِنْهُمْ

from them

min'hum

نَفَقَـٰتُهُمْ

their contributions

nafaqātuhum

إِلَّآ

except

illā

أَنَّهُمْ

that they

annahum

كَفَرُوا۟

disbelieve

kafarū

بِٱللَّهِ

in Allah

bil-lahi

وَبِرَسُولِهِۦ

and in His Messenger

wabirasūlihi

وَلَا

and not

walā

يَأْتُونَ

they come

yatūna

ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ

(to) the prayer

l-ṣalata

إِلَّا

except

illā

وَهُمْ

while they

wahum

كُسَالَىٰ

(are) lazy

kusālā

وَلَا

and not

walā

يُنفِقُونَ

they spend

yunfiqūna

إِلَّا

except

illā

وَهُمْ

while they

wahum

كَـٰرِهُونَ

(are) unwilling

kārihūna

٥٤

And what prevents their expenditures from being accepted from them but that they have disbelieved in Allāh and in His Messenger and that they come not to prayer except while they are lazy and that they do not spend except while they are unwilling.

— Saheeh International

فَلَا

So (let) not

falā

تُعْجِبْكَ

impress you

tuʿ'jib'ka

أَمْوَٰلُهُمْ

their wealth

amwāluhum

وَلَآ

and not

walā

أَوْلَـٰدُهُمْ ۚ

their children

awlāduhum

إِنَّمَا

Only

innamā

يُرِيدُ

Allah intends

yurīdu

ٱللَّهُ

Allah intends

l-lahu

لِيُعَذِّبَهُم

to punish them

liyuʿadhibahum

بِهَا

with it

bihā

فِى

in

ٱلْحَيَوٰةِ

the life

l-ḥayati

ٱلدُّنْيَا

(of) the world

l-dun'yā

وَتَزْهَقَ

and should depart

watazhaqa

أَنفُسُهُمْ

their souls

anfusuhum

وَهُمْ

while they

wahum

كَـٰفِرُونَ

(are) disbelievers

kāfirūna

٥٥

So let not their wealth or their children impress you. Allāh only intends to punish them through them in worldly life and that their souls should depart [at death] while they are disbelievers.

— Saheeh International

وَيَحْلِفُونَ

And they swear

wayaḥlifūna

بِٱللَّهِ

by Allah

bil-lahi

إِنَّهُمْ

indeed, they

innahum

لَمِنكُمْ

surely (are) of you

laminkum

وَمَا

while not

wamā

هُم

they

hum

مِّنكُمْ

(are) of you

minkum

وَلَـٰكِنَّهُمْ

but they

walākinnahum

قَوْمٌۭ

(are) a people

qawmun

يَفْرَقُونَ

(who) are afraid

yafraqūna

٥٦

And they swear by Allāh that they are from among you while they are not from among you; but they are a people who are afraid.

— Saheeh International

لَوْ

If

law

يَجِدُونَ

they could find

yajidūna

مَلْجَـًٔا

a refuge

malja-an

أَوْ

or

aw

مَغَـٰرَٰتٍ

caves

maghārātin

أَوْ

or

aw

مُدَّخَلًۭا

a place to enter

muddakhalan

لَّوَلَّوْا۟

surely, they would turn

lawallaw

إِلَيْهِ

to it

ilayhi

وَهُمْ

and they

wahum

يَجْمَحُونَ

run wild

yajmaḥūna

٥٧

If they could find a refuge or some caves or any place to enter [and hide], they would turn to it while they run heedlessly.

— Saheeh International

وَمِنْهُم

And among them

wamin'hum

مَّن

(is he) who

man

يَلْمِزُكَ

criticizes you

yalmizuka

فِى

concerning

ٱلصَّدَقَـٰتِ

the charities

l-ṣadaqāti

فَإِنْ

Then if

fa-in

أُعْطُوا۟

they are given

uʿ'ṭū

مِنْهَا

from it

min'hā

رَضُوا۟

they are pleased

raḍū

وَإِن

but if

wa-in

لَّمْ

not

lam

يُعْطَوْا۟

they are given

yuʿ'ṭaw

مِنْهَآ

from it

min'hā

إِذَا

then

idhā

هُمْ

they

hum

يَسْخَطُونَ

(are) enraged

yaskhaṭūna

٥٨

And among them are some who criticize you concerning the [distribution of] charities. If they are given from them, they approve; but if they are not given from them, at once they become angry.

— Saheeh International

وَلَوْ

And if

walaw

أَنَّهُمْ

[that] they

annahum

رَضُوا۟

(were) satisfied

raḍū

مَآ

(with) what

ءَاتَىٰهُمُ

Allah gave them

ātāhumu

ٱللَّهُ

Allah gave them

l-lahu

وَرَسُولُهُۥ

and His Messenger

warasūluhu

وَقَالُوا۟

and said

waqālū

حَسْبُنَا

Sufficient for us

ḥasbunā

ٱللَّهُ

(is) Allah

l-lahu

سَيُؤْتِينَا

Allah will give us

sayu'tīnā

ٱللَّهُ

Allah will give us

l-lahu

مِن

of

min

فَضْلِهِۦ

His Bounty

faḍlihi

وَرَسُولُهُۥٓ

and His Messenger

warasūluhu

إِنَّآ

Indeed, we

innā

إِلَى

to

ilā

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

رَٰغِبُونَ

turn our hopes

rāghibūna

٥٩

If only they had been satisfied with what Allāh and His Messenger gave them and said, "Sufficient for us is Allāh; Allāh will give us of His bounty, and [so will] His Messenger; indeed, we are desirous toward Allāh,"1 [it would have been better for them].

— Saheeh International

۞ إِنَّمَا

Only

innamā

ٱلصَّدَقَـٰتُ

the charities

l-ṣadaqātu

لِلْفُقَرَآءِ

(are) for the poor

lil'fuqarāi

وَٱلْمَسَـٰكِينِ

and the needy

wal-masākīni

وَٱلْعَـٰمِلِينَ

and those who collect

wal-ʿāmilīna

عَلَيْهَا

them

ʿalayhā

وَٱلْمُؤَلَّفَةِ

and the ones inclined

wal-mu-alafati

قُلُوبُهُمْ

their hearts

qulūbuhum

وَفِى

and in

wafī

ٱلرِّقَابِ

the (freeing of) the necks

l-riqābi

وَٱلْغَـٰرِمِينَ

and for those in debt

wal-ghārimīna

وَفِى

and in

wafī

سَبِيلِ

(the) way

sabīli

ٱللَّهِ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

وَٱبْنِ

and the wayfarer

wa-ib'ni

ٱلسَّبِيلِ ۖ

and the wayfarer

l-sabīli

فَرِيضَةًۭ

an obligation

farīḍatan

مِّنَ

from

mina

ٱللَّهِ ۗ

Allah

l-lahi

وَٱللَّهُ

And Allah

wal-lahu

عَلِيمٌ

(is) All-Knowing

ʿalīmun

حَكِيمٌۭ

All-Wise

ḥakīmun

٦٠

Zakāh expenditures are only for the poor and for the needy and for those employed for it1 and for bringing hearts together [for Islām] and for freeing captives [or slaves] and for those in debt and for the cause of Allāh and for the [stranded] traveler - an obligation [imposed] by Allāh. And Allāh is Knowing and Wise.

— Saheeh International

وَمِنْهُمُ

And among them

wamin'humu

ٱلَّذِينَ

(are) those who

alladhīna

يُؤْذُونَ

hurt

yu'dhūna

ٱلنَّبِىَّ

the Prophet

l-nabiya

وَيَقُولُونَ

and they say

wayaqūlūna

هُوَ

He is

huwa

أُذُنٌۭ ۚ

(all) ear

udhunun

قُلْ

Say

qul

أُذُنُ

An ear

udhunu

خَيْرٍۢ

(of) goodness

khayrin

لَّكُمْ

for you

lakum

يُؤْمِنُ

he believes

yu'minu

بِٱللَّهِ

in Allah

bil-lahi

وَيُؤْمِنُ

and believes

wayu'minu

لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ

the believers

lil'mu'minīna

وَرَحْمَةٌۭ

and (is) a mercy

waraḥmatun

لِّلَّذِينَ

to those who

lilladhīna

ءَامَنُوا۟

believe

āmanū

مِنكُمْ ۚ

among you

minkum

وَٱلَّذِينَ

And those who

wa-alladhīna

يُؤْذُونَ

hurt

yu'dhūna

رَسُولَ

(the) Messenger

rasūla

ٱللَّهِ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

لَهُمْ

for them

lahum

عَذَابٌ

(is) a punishment

ʿadhābun

أَلِيمٌۭ

painful

alīmun

٦١

And among them are those who abuse the Prophet and say, "He is an ear."1 Say, "[It is] an ear of goodness for you that believes in Allāh and believes the believers and [is] a mercy to those who believe among you." And those who abuse the Messenger of Allāh - for them is a painful punishment.

— Saheeh International

يَحْلِفُونَ

They swear

yaḥlifūna

بِٱللَّهِ

by Allah

bil-lahi

لَكُمْ

to you

lakum

لِيُرْضُوكُمْ

to please you

liyur'ḍūkum

وَٱللَّهُ

And Allah

wal-lahu

وَرَسُولُهُۥٓ

and His Messenger

warasūluhu

أَحَقُّ

(have) more right

aḥaqqu

أَن

that

an

يُرْضُوهُ

they should please Him

yur'ḍūhu

إِن

if

in

كَانُوا۟

they are

kānū

مُؤْمِنِينَ

believers

mu'minīna

٦٢

They swear by Allāh to you [Muslims] to satisfy you. But Allāh and His Messenger are more worthy for them to satisfy,1 if they were to be believers.

— Saheeh International

أَلَمْ

Do not

alam

يَعْلَمُوٓا۟

they know

yaʿlamū

أَنَّهُۥ

that he

annahu

مَن

who

man

يُحَادِدِ

opposes

yuḥādidi

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

وَرَسُولَهُۥ

and His Messenger

warasūlahu

فَأَنَّ

[then] that

fa-anna

لَهُۥ

for him

lahu

نَارَ

(is the) Fire

nāra

جَهَنَّمَ

(of) Hell

jahannama

خَـٰلِدًۭا

(will) abide forever

khālidan

فِيهَا ۚ

in it

fīhā

ذَٰلِكَ

That

dhālika

ٱلْخِزْىُ

(is) the disgrace

l-khiz'yu

ٱلْعَظِيمُ

the great

l-ʿaẓīmu

٦٣

Do they not know that whoever opposes Allāh and His Messenger - that for him is the fire of Hell, wherein he will abide eternally? That is the great disgrace.

— Saheeh International

يَحْذَرُ

Fear

yaḥdharu

ٱلْمُنَـٰفِقُونَ

the hypocrites

l-munāfiqūna

أَن

lest

an

تُنَزَّلَ

be revealed

tunazzala

عَلَيْهِمْ

about them

ʿalayhim

سُورَةٌۭ

a Surah

sūratun

تُنَبِّئُهُم

informing them

tunabbi-uhum

بِمَا

of what

bimā

فِى

(is) in

قُلُوبِهِمْ ۚ

their hearts

qulūbihim

قُلِ

Say

quli

ٱسْتَهْزِءُوٓا۟

Mock

is'tahziū

إِنَّ

indeed

inna

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

مُخْرِجٌۭ

(will) bring forth

mukh'rijun

مَّا

what

تَحْذَرُونَ

you fear

taḥdharūna

٦٤

The hypocrites are apprehensive lest a sūrah be revealed about them, informing them of1 what is in their hearts. Say, "Mock [as you wish]; indeed, Allāh will expose that which you fear."

— Saheeh International

وَلَئِن

And if

wala-in

سَأَلْتَهُمْ

you ask them

sa-altahum

لَيَقُولُنَّ

surely they will say

layaqūlunna

إِنَّمَا

Only

innamā

كُنَّا

we were

kunnā

نَخُوضُ

conversing

nakhūḍu

وَنَلْعَبُ ۚ

and playing

wanalʿabu

قُلْ

Say

qul

أَبِٱللَّهِ

Is it Allah

abil-lahi

وَءَايَـٰتِهِۦ

and His Verses

waāyātihi

وَرَسُولِهِۦ

and His Messenger

warasūlihi

كُنتُمْ

(that) you were

kuntum

تَسْتَهْزِءُونَ

mocking

tastahziūna

٦٥

And if you ask them, they will surely say, "We were only conversing and playing." Say, "Is it Allāh and His verses and His Messenger that you were mocking?"

— Saheeh International

لَا

(Do) not

تَعْتَذِرُوا۟

make excuse

taʿtadhirū

قَدْ

verily

qad

كَفَرْتُم

you have disbelieved

kafartum

بَعْدَ

after

baʿda

إِيمَـٰنِكُمْ ۚ

your belief

īmānikum

إِن

If

in

نَّعْفُ

We pardon

naʿfu

عَن

[on]

ʿan

طَآئِفَةٍۢ

a party

ṭāifatin

مِّنكُمْ

of you

minkum

نُعَذِّبْ

We will punish

nuʿadhib

طَآئِفَةًۢ

a party

ṭāifatan

بِأَنَّهُمْ

because they

bi-annahum

كَانُوا۟

were

kānū

مُجْرِمِينَ

criminals

muj'rimīna

٦٦

Make no excuse; you have disbelieved [i.e., rejected faith] after your belief. If We pardon one faction of you - We will punish another faction because they were criminals.

— Saheeh International

ٱلْمُنَـٰفِقُونَ

The hypocrite men

al-munāfiqūna

وَٱلْمُنَـٰفِقَـٰتُ

and the hypocrite women

wal-munāfiqātu

بَعْضُهُم

some of them

baʿḍuhum

مِّنۢ

(are) of

min

بَعْضٍۢ ۚ

others

baʿḍin

يَأْمُرُونَ

They enjoin

yamurūna

بِٱلْمُنكَرِ

the wrong

bil-munkari

وَيَنْهَوْنَ

and forbid

wayanhawna

عَنِ

what

ʿani

ٱلْمَعْرُوفِ

(is) the right

l-maʿrūfi

وَيَقْبِضُونَ

and they close

wayaqbiḍūna

أَيْدِيَهُمْ ۚ

their hands

aydiyahum

نَسُوا۟

They forget

nasū

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

فَنَسِيَهُمْ ۗ

so He has forgotten them

fanasiyahum

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱلْمُنَـٰفِقِينَ

the hypocrites

l-munāfiqīna

هُمُ

they (are)

humu

ٱلْفَـٰسِقُونَ

the defiantly disobedient

l-fāsiqūna

٦٧

The hypocrite men and hypocrite women are of one another. They enjoin what is wrong and forbid what is right and close their hands.1 They have forgotten Allāh, so He has forgotten them [accordingly]. Indeed, the hypocrites - it is they who are the defiantly disobedient.

— Saheeh International

وَعَدَ

Allah has promised

waʿada

ٱللَّهُ

Allah has promised

l-lahu

ٱلْمُنَـٰفِقِينَ

the hypocrite men

l-munāfiqīna

وَٱلْمُنَـٰفِقَـٰتِ

and the hypocrite women

wal-munāfiqāti

وَٱلْكُفَّارَ

and the disbelievers

wal-kufāra

نَارَ

Fire

nāra

جَهَنَّمَ

(of) Hell

jahannama

خَـٰلِدِينَ

they (will) abide forever

khālidīna

فِيهَا ۚ

in it

fīhā

هِىَ

It (is)

hiya

حَسْبُهُمْ ۚ

sufficient for them

ḥasbuhum

وَلَعَنَهُمُ

And Allah has cursed them

walaʿanahumu

ٱللَّهُ ۖ

And Allah has cursed them

l-lahu

وَلَهُمْ

and for them

walahum

عَذَابٌۭ

(is) a punishment

ʿadhābun

مُّقِيمٌۭ

enduring

muqīmun

٦٨

Allāh has promised the hypocrite men and hypocrite women and the disbelievers the fire of Hell, wherein they will abide eternally. It is sufficient for them. And Allāh has cursed them, and for them is an enduring punishment.

— Saheeh International

كَٱلَّذِينَ

Like those

ka-alladhīna

مِن

before you

min

قَبْلِكُمْ

before you

qablikum

كَانُوٓا۟

they were

kānū

أَشَدَّ

mightier

ashadda

مِنكُمْ

than you

minkum

قُوَّةًۭ

(in) strength

quwwatan

وَأَكْثَرَ

and more abundant

wa-akthara

أَمْوَٰلًۭا

(in) wealth

amwālan

وَأَوْلَـٰدًۭا

and children

wa-awlādan

فَٱسْتَمْتَعُوا۟

So they enjoyed

fa-is'tamtaʿū

بِخَلَـٰقِهِمْ

their portion

bikhalāqihim

فَٱسْتَمْتَعْتُم

and you have enjoyed

fa-is'tamtaʿtum

بِخَلَـٰقِكُمْ

your portion

bikhalāqikum

كَمَا

like

kamā

ٱسْتَمْتَعَ

enjoyed

is'tamtaʿa

ٱلَّذِينَ

those

alladhīna

مِن

before you

min

قَبْلِكُم

before you

qablikum

بِخَلَـٰقِهِمْ

their portion

bikhalāqihim

وَخُضْتُمْ

and you indulge

wakhuḍ'tum

كَٱلَّذِى

like the one who

ka-alladhī

خَاضُوٓا۟ ۚ

indulges (in idle talk)

khāḍū

أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ

Those

ulāika

حَبِطَتْ

worthless

ḥabiṭat

أَعْمَـٰلُهُمْ

(are) their deeds

aʿmāluhum

فِى

in

ٱلدُّنْيَا

the world

l-dun'yā

وَٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ ۖ

and (in) the Hereafter

wal-ākhirati

وَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ

And those

wa-ulāika

هُمُ

they

humu

ٱلْخَـٰسِرُونَ

(are) the losers

l-khāsirūna

٦٩

[You disbelievers are] like those before you; they were stronger than you in power and more abundant in wealth and children. They enjoyed their portion [of worldly enjoyment], and you have enjoyed your portion as those before you enjoyed their portion, and you have engaged [in vanities] like that in which they engaged. [It is] those whose deeds have become worthless in this world and in the Hereafter, and it is they who are the losers.

— Saheeh International

أَلَمْ

Has not

alam

يَأْتِهِمْ

come to them

yatihim

نَبَأُ

(the) news

naba-u

ٱلَّذِينَ

(of) those who

alladhīna

مِن

(were) before them

min

قَبْلِهِمْ

(were) before them

qablihim

قَوْمِ

(the) people

qawmi

نُوحٍۢ

(of) Nuh

nūḥin

وَعَادٍۢ

and Aad

waʿādin

وَثَمُودَ

and Thamud

wathamūda

وَقَوْمِ

and (the) people

waqawmi

إِبْرَٰهِيمَ

(of) Ibrahim

ib'rāhīma

وَأَصْحَـٰبِ

and (the) companions

wa-aṣḥābi

مَدْيَنَ

(of) Madyan

madyana

وَٱلْمُؤْتَفِكَـٰتِ ۚ

and the towns overturned

wal-mu'tafikāti

أَتَتْهُمْ

Came to them

atathum

رُسُلُهُم

their Messengers

rusuluhum

بِٱلْبَيِّنَـٰتِ ۖ

with clear proofs

bil-bayināti

فَمَا

And not

famā

كَانَ

was

kāna

ٱللَّهُ

Allah

l-lahu

لِيَظْلِمَهُمْ

to wrong them

liyaẓlimahum

وَلَـٰكِن

but

walākin

كَانُوٓا۟

they were (to)

kānū

أَنفُسَهُمْ

themselves

anfusahum

يَظْلِمُونَ

doing wrong

yaẓlimūna

٧٠

Has there not reached them the news of those before them - the people of Noah and [the tribes of] ʿAad and Thamūd and the people of Abraham and the companions [i.e., dwellers] of Madyan and the towns overturned?1 Their messengers came to them with clear proofs. And Allāh would never have wronged them, but they were wronging themselves.

— Saheeh International

وَٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ

And the believing men

wal-mu'minūna

وَٱلْمُؤْمِنَـٰتُ

and the believing women

wal-mu'minātu

بَعْضُهُمْ

some of them

baʿḍuhum

أَوْلِيَآءُ

(are) allies

awliyāu

بَعْضٍۢ ۚ

(of) others

baʿḍin

يَأْمُرُونَ

They enjoin

yamurūna

بِٱلْمَعْرُوفِ

the right

bil-maʿrūfi

وَيَنْهَوْنَ

and forbid

wayanhawna

عَنِ

from

ʿani

ٱلْمُنكَرِ

the wrong

l-munkari

وَيُقِيمُونَ

and they establish

wayuqīmūna

ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ

the prayer

l-ṣalata

وَيُؤْتُونَ

and give

wayu'tūna

ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ

the zakah

l-zakata

وَيُطِيعُونَ

and they obey

wayuṭīʿūna

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

وَرَسُولَهُۥٓ ۚ

and His Messenger

warasūlahu

أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ

Those

ulāika

سَيَرْحَمُهُمُ

Allah will have mercy on them

sayarḥamuhumu

ٱللَّهُ ۗ

Allah will have mercy on them

l-lahu

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

عَزِيزٌ

(is) All-Mighty

ʿazīzun

حَكِيمٌۭ

All-Wise

ḥakīmun

٧١

The believing men and believing women are allies of one another. They enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong and establish prayer and give zakāh and obey Allāh and His Messenger. Those - Allāh will have mercy upon them. Indeed, Allāh is Exalted in Might and Wise.

— Saheeh International

وَعَدَ

(Has been) promised

waʿada

ٱللَّهُ

(by) Allah

l-lahu

ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ

(to) the believing men

l-mu'minīna

وَٱلْمُؤْمِنَـٰتِ

and the believing women

wal-mu'mināti

جَنَّـٰتٍۢ

Gardens

jannātin

تَجْرِى

flow

tajrī

مِن

from

min

تَحْتِهَا

underneath it

taḥtihā

ٱلْأَنْهَـٰرُ

the rivers

l-anhāru

خَـٰلِدِينَ

(will) abide forever

khālidīna

فِيهَا

in it

fīhā

وَمَسَـٰكِنَ

and dwellings

wamasākina

طَيِّبَةًۭ

blessed

ṭayyibatan

فِى

in

جَنَّـٰتِ

Gardens

jannāti

عَدْنٍۢ ۚ

(of) everlasting bliss

ʿadnin

وَرِضْوَٰنٌۭ

But the pleasure

wariḍ'wānun

مِّنَ

of

mina

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

أَكْبَرُ ۚ

(is) greater

akbaru

ذَٰلِكَ

That

dhālika

هُوَ

it

huwa

ٱلْفَوْزُ

(is) the success

l-fawzu

ٱلْعَظِيمُ

great

l-ʿaẓīmu

٧٢

Allāh has promised the believing men and believing women gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they abide eternally, and pleasant dwellings in gardens of perpetual residence; but approval from Allāh is greater. It is that which is the great attainment.

— Saheeh International

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا

O Prophet

yāayyuhā

ٱلنَّبِىُّ

O Prophet

l-nabiyu

جَـٰهِدِ

Strive (against)

jāhidi

ٱلْكُفَّارَ

the disbelievers

l-kufāra

وَٱلْمُنَـٰفِقِينَ

and the hypocrites

wal-munāfiqīna

وَٱغْلُظْ

and be stern

wa-ugh'luẓ

عَلَيْهِمْ ۚ

with them

ʿalayhim

وَمَأْوَىٰهُمْ

And their abode

wamawāhum

جَهَنَّمُ ۖ

(is) Hell

jahannamu

وَبِئْسَ

and wretched

wabi'sa

ٱلْمَصِيرُ

(is) the destination

l-maṣīru

٧٣

O Prophet, fight against the disbelievers and the hypocrites and be harsh upon them. And their refuge is Hell, and wretched is the destination.

— Saheeh International

يَحْلِفُونَ

They swear

yaḥlifūna

بِٱللَّهِ

by Allah

bil-lahi

مَا

(that) they said nothing

قَالُوا۟

(that) they said nothing

qālū

وَلَقَدْ

while certainly

walaqad

قَالُوا۟

they said

qālū

كَلِمَةَ

(the) word

kalimata

ٱلْكُفْرِ

(of) the disbelief

l-kuf'ri

وَكَفَرُوا۟

and disbelieved

wakafarū

بَعْدَ

after

baʿda

إِسْلَـٰمِهِمْ

their (pretense of) Islam

is'lāmihim

وَهَمُّوا۟

and planned

wahammū

بِمَا

[of] what

bimā

لَمْ

not

lam

يَنَالُوا۟ ۚ

they could attain

yanālū

وَمَا

And not

wamā

نَقَمُوٓا۟

they were resentful

naqamū

إِلَّآ

except

illā

أَنْ

that

an

أَغْنَىٰهُمُ

Allah had enriched them

aghnāhumu

ٱللَّهُ

Allah had enriched them

l-lahu

وَرَسُولُهُۥ

and His Messenger

warasūluhu

مِن

of

min

فَضْلِهِۦ ۚ

His Bounty

faḍlihi

فَإِن

So if

fa-in

يَتُوبُوا۟

they repent

yatūbū

يَكُ

it is

yaku

خَيْرًۭا

better

khayran

لَّهُمْ ۖ

for them

lahum

وَإِن

and if

wa-in

يَتَوَلَّوْا۟

they turn away

yatawallaw

يُعَذِّبْهُمُ

Allah will punish them

yuʿadhib'humu

ٱللَّهُ

Allah will punish them

l-lahu

عَذَابًا

(with) a punishment

ʿadhāban

أَلِيمًۭا

painful

alīman

فِى

in

ٱلدُّنْيَا

the world

l-dun'yā

وَٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ ۚ

and (in) the Hereafter

wal-ākhirati

وَمَا

And not

wamā

لَهُمْ

for them

lahum

فِى

in

ٱلْأَرْضِ

the earth

l-arḍi

مِن

any

min

وَلِىٍّۢ

protector

waliyyin

وَلَا

and not

walā

نَصِيرٍۢ

a helper

naṣīrin

٧٤

They swear by Allāh that they did not say [anything against the Prophet (ﷺ)] while they had said the word of disbelief and disbelieved after their [pretense of] Islām and planned that which they were not to attain.1 And they were not resentful except [for the fact] that Allāh and His Messenger had enriched them of His bounty.2 So if they repent, it is better for them; but if they turn away, Allāh will punish them with a painful punishment in this world and the Hereafter. And there will not be for them on earth any protector or helper.

— Saheeh International

۞ وَمِنْهُم

And among them

wamin'hum

مَّنْ

(is he) who

man

عَـٰهَدَ

made a covenant

ʿāhada

ٱللَّهَ

(with) Allah

l-laha

لَئِنْ

If

la-in

ءَاتَىٰنَا

He gives us

ātānā

مِن

of

min

فَضْلِهِۦ

His bounty

faḍlihi

لَنَصَّدَّقَنَّ

surely we will give charity

lanaṣṣaddaqanna

وَلَنَكُونَنَّ

and surely we will be

walanakūnanna

مِنَ

among

mina

ٱلصَّـٰلِحِينَ

the righteous

l-ṣāliḥīna

٧٥

And among them are those who made a covenant with Allāh, [saying], "If He should give us from His bounty, we will surely spend in charity, and we will surely be among the righteous."

— Saheeh International

فَلَمَّآ

But when

falammā

ءَاتَىٰهُم

He gave them

ātāhum

مِّن

of

min

فَضْلِهِۦ

His Bounty

faḍlihi

بَخِلُوا۟

they became stingy

bakhilū

بِهِۦ

with it

bihi

وَتَوَلَّوا۟

and turned away

watawallaw

وَّهُم

while they

wahum

مُّعْرِضُونَ

(were) averse

muʿ'riḍūna

٧٦

But when He gave them from His bounty, they were stingy with it and turned away while they refused.

— Saheeh International

فَأَعْقَبَهُمْ

So He penalized them

fa-aʿqabahum

نِفَاقًۭا

(with) hypocrisy

nifāqan

فِى

in

قُلُوبِهِمْ

their hearts

qulūbihim

إِلَىٰ

until

ilā

يَوْمِ

the day

yawmi

يَلْقَوْنَهُۥ

when they will meet Him

yalqawnahu

بِمَآ

because

bimā

أَخْلَفُوا۟

they broke

akhlafū

ٱللَّهَ

(the covenant with) Allah

l-laha

مَا

what

وَعَدُوهُ

they had promised Him

waʿadūhu

وَبِمَا

and because

wabimā

كَانُوا۟

they used to

kānū

يَكْذِبُونَ

lie

yakdhibūna

٧٧

So He penalized them with hypocrisy in their hearts until the Day they will meet Him - because they failed Allāh in what they promised Him and because they [habitually] used to lie.

— Saheeh International

أَلَمْ

Do not

alam

يَعْلَمُوٓا۟

they know

yaʿlamū

أَنَّ

that

anna

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

يَعْلَمُ

knows

yaʿlamu

سِرَّهُمْ

their secret

sirrahum

وَنَجْوَىٰهُمْ

and their secret conversation

wanajwāhum

وَأَنَّ

and that

wa-anna

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

عَلَّـٰمُ

(is) All-Knower

ʿallāmu

ٱلْغُيُوبِ

(of) the unseen

l-ghuyūbi

٧٨

Did they not know that Allāh knows their secrets and their private conversations and that Allāh is the Knower of the unseen?

— Saheeh International

ٱلَّذِينَ

Those who

alladhīna

يَلْمِزُونَ

criticize

yalmizūna

ٱلْمُطَّوِّعِينَ

the ones who give willingly

l-muṭawiʿīna

مِنَ

of

mina

ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ

the believers

l-mu'minīna

فِى

concerning

ٱلصَّدَقَـٰتِ

the charities

l-ṣadaqāti

وَٱلَّذِينَ

and those who

wa-alladhīna

لَا

not

يَجِدُونَ

find

yajidūna

إِلَّا

except

illā

جُهْدَهُمْ

their effort

juh'dahum

فَيَسْخَرُونَ

so they ridicule

fayaskharūna

مِنْهُمْ ۙ

them

min'hum

سَخِرَ

Allah will ridicule

sakhira

ٱللَّهُ

Allah will ridicule

l-lahu

مِنْهُمْ

them

min'hum

وَلَهُمْ

and for them

walahum

عَذَابٌ

(is) a punishment

ʿadhābun

أَلِيمٌ

painful

alīmun

٧٩

Those who criticize the contributors among the believers concerning [their] charities and [criticize] the ones who find nothing [to spend] except their effort, so they ridicule them - Allāh will ridicule them, and they will have a painful punishment.

— Saheeh International

ٱسْتَغْفِرْ

Ask forgiveness

is'taghfir

لَهُمْ

for them

lahum

أَوْ

or

aw

لَا

(do) not

تَسْتَغْفِرْ

ask forgiveness

tastaghfir

لَهُمْ

for them

lahum

إِن

If

in

تَسْتَغْفِرْ

you ask forgiveness

tastaghfir

لَهُمْ

for them

lahum

سَبْعِينَ

seventy

sabʿīna

مَرَّةًۭ

times

marratan

فَلَن

never

falan

يَغْفِرَ

will Allah forgive

yaghfira

ٱللَّهُ

will Allah forgive

l-lahu

لَهُمْ ۚ

[for] them

lahum

ذَٰلِكَ

That

dhālika

بِأَنَّهُمْ

(is) because they

bi-annahum

كَفَرُوا۟

disbelieved

kafarū

بِٱللَّهِ

in Allah

bil-lahi

وَرَسُولِهِۦ ۗ

and His Messenger

warasūlihi

وَٱللَّهُ

and Allah

wal-lahu

لَا

(does) not

يَهْدِى

guide

yahdī

ٱلْقَوْمَ

the people

l-qawma

ٱلْفَـٰسِقِينَ

the defiantly disobedient

l-fāsiqīna

٨٠

Ask forgiveness for them, [O Muḥammad], or do not ask forgiveness for them. If you should ask forgiveness for them seventy times - never will Allāh forgive them. That is because they disbelieved in Allāh and His Messenger, and Allāh does not guide the defiantly disobedient people.

— Saheeh International

فَرِحَ

Rejoice

fariḥa

ٱلْمُخَلَّفُونَ

those who remained behind

l-mukhalafūna

بِمَقْعَدِهِمْ

in their staying

bimaqʿadihim

خِلَـٰفَ

behind

khilāfa

رَسُولِ

(the) Messenger

rasūli

ٱللَّهِ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

وَكَرِهُوٓا۟

and they disliked

wakarihū

أَن

to

an

يُجَـٰهِدُوا۟

strive

yujāhidū

بِأَمْوَٰلِهِمْ

with their wealth

bi-amwālihim

وَأَنفُسِهِمْ

and their lives

wa-anfusihim

فِى

in

سَبِيلِ

(the) way

sabīli

ٱللَّهِ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

وَقَالُوا۟

and they said

waqālū

لَا

(Do) not

تَنفِرُوا۟

go forth

tanfirū

فِى

in

ٱلْحَرِّ ۗ

the heat

l-ḥari

قُلْ

Say

qul

نَارُ

(The) Fire

nāru

جَهَنَّمَ

(of) Hell

jahannama

أَشَدُّ

(is) more intense

ashaddu

حَرًّۭا ۚ

(in) heat

ḥarran

لَّوْ

If (only)

law

كَانُوا۟

they could

kānū

يَفْقَهُونَ

understand

yafqahūna

٨١

Those who remained behind1 rejoiced in their staying [at home] after [the departure of] the Messenger of Allāh and disliked to strive with their wealth and their lives in the cause of Allāh and said, "Do not go forth in the heat." Say, "The fire of Hell is more intense in heat" - if they would but understand.

— Saheeh International

فَلْيَضْحَكُوا۟

So let them laugh

falyaḍḥakū

قَلِيلًۭا

a little

qalīlan

وَلْيَبْكُوا۟

and let them weep

walyabkū

كَثِيرًۭا

much

kathīran

جَزَآءًۢ

(as) a recompense

jazāan

بِمَا

for what

bimā

كَانُوا۟

they used to

kānū

يَكْسِبُونَ

earn

yaksibūna

٨٢

So let them laugh a little and [then] weep much as recompense for what they used to earn.

— Saheeh International

فَإِن

Then if

fa-in

رَّجَعَكَ

Allah returns you

rajaʿaka

ٱللَّهُ

Allah returns you

l-lahu

إِلَىٰ

to

ilā

طَآئِفَةٍۢ

a group

ṭāifatin

مِّنْهُمْ

of them

min'hum

فَٱسْتَـْٔذَنُوكَ

and they ask you permission

fa-is'tadhanūka

لِلْخُرُوجِ

to go out

lil'khurūji

فَقُل

then say

faqul

لَّن

Never

lan

تَخْرُجُوا۟

will you come out

takhrujū

مَعِىَ

with me

maʿiya

أَبَدًۭا

ever

abadan

وَلَن

and never

walan

تُقَـٰتِلُوا۟

will you fight

tuqātilū

مَعِىَ

with me

maʿiya

عَدُوًّا ۖ

any enemy

ʿaduwwan

إِنَّكُمْ

Indeed, you

innakum

رَضِيتُم

were satisfied

raḍītum

بِٱلْقُعُودِ

with sitting

bil-quʿūdi

أَوَّلَ

(the) first

awwala

مَرَّةٍۢ

time

marratin

فَٱقْعُدُوا۟

so sit

fa-uq'ʿudū

مَعَ

with

maʿa

ٱلْخَـٰلِفِينَ

those who stay behind

l-khālifīna

٨٣

If Allāh should return you to a faction of them [after the expedition] and then they ask your permission to go out [to battle], say, "You will not go out with me, ever, and you will never fight with me an enemy. Indeed, you were satisfied with sitting [at home] the first time, so sit [now] with those who stay behind."

— Saheeh International

وَلَا

And not

walā

تُصَلِّ

you pray

tuṣalli

عَلَىٰٓ

for

ʿalā

أَحَدٍۢ

any

aḥadin

مِّنْهُم

of them

min'hum

مَّاتَ

who dies

māta

أَبَدًۭا

ever

abadan

وَلَا

and not

walā

تَقُمْ

you stand

taqum

عَلَىٰ

by

ʿalā

قَبْرِهِۦٓ ۖ

his grave

qabrihi

إِنَّهُمْ

Indeed, they

innahum

كَفَرُوا۟

disbelieved

kafarū

بِٱللَّهِ

in Allah

bil-lahi

وَرَسُولِهِۦ

and His Messenger

warasūlihi

وَمَاتُوا۟

and died

wamātū

وَهُمْ

while they were

wahum

فَـٰسِقُونَ

defiantly disobedient

fāsiqūna

٨٤

And do not pray [the funeral prayer, O Muḥammad], over any of them who has died - ever - or stand at his grave. Indeed, they disbelieved in Allāh and His Messenger and died while they were defiantly disobedient.

— Saheeh International

وَلَا

And (let) not

walā

تُعْجِبْكَ

impress you

tuʿ'jib'ka

أَمْوَٰلُهُمْ

their wealth

amwāluhum

وَأَوْلَـٰدُهُمْ ۚ

and their children

wa-awlāduhum

إِنَّمَا

Only

innamā

يُرِيدُ

Allah intends

yurīdu

ٱللَّهُ

Allah intends

l-lahu

أَن

to

an

يُعَذِّبَهُم

punish them

yuʿadhibahum

بِهَا

with it

bihā

فِى

in

ٱلدُّنْيَا

the world

l-dun'yā

وَتَزْهَقَ

and will depart

watazhaqa

أَنفُسُهُمْ

their souls

anfusuhum

وَهُمْ

while they

wahum

كَـٰفِرُونَ

(are) disbelievers

kāfirūna

٨٥

And let not their wealth and their children impress you. Allāh only intends to punish them through them in this world and that their souls should depart [at death] while they are disbelievers.

— Saheeh International

وَإِذَآ

And when

wa-idhā

أُنزِلَتْ

was revealed

unzilat

سُورَةٌ

a Surah

sūratun

أَنْ

that

an

ءَامِنُوا۟

believe

āminū

بِٱللَّهِ

in Allah

bil-lahi

وَجَـٰهِدُوا۟

and strive

wajāhidū

مَعَ

with

maʿa

رَسُولِهِ

His Messenger

rasūlihi

ٱسْتَـْٔذَنَكَ

ask your permission

is'tadhanaka

أُو۟لُوا۟

(the) men

ulū

ٱلطَّوْلِ

(of) wealth

l-ṭawli

مِنْهُمْ

among them

min'hum

وَقَالُوا۟

and said

waqālū

ذَرْنَا

Leave us

dharnā

نَكُن

(to) be

nakun

مَّعَ

with

maʿa

ٱلْقَـٰعِدِينَ

those who sit

l-qāʿidīna

٨٦

And when a sūrah was revealed [enjoining them] to believe in Allāh and to fight with His Messenger, those of wealth among them asked your permission [to stay back] and said, "Leave us to be with them who sit [at home]."

— Saheeh International

رَضُوا۟

They (were) satisfied

raḍū

بِأَن

to

bi-an

يَكُونُوا۟

be

yakūnū

مَعَ

with

maʿa

ٱلْخَوَالِفِ

those who stay behind

l-khawālifi

وَطُبِعَ

and were sealed

waṭubiʿa

عَلَىٰ

[on]

ʿalā

قُلُوبِهِمْ

their hearts

qulūbihim

فَهُمْ

so they

fahum

لَا

(do) not

يَفْقَهُونَ

understand

yafqahūna

٨٧

They were satisfied to be with those who stay behind, and their hearts were sealed over, so they do not understand.

— Saheeh International

لَـٰكِنِ

But

lākini

ٱلرَّسُولُ

the Messenger

l-rasūlu

وَٱلَّذِينَ

and those who

wa-alladhīna

ءَامَنُوا۟

believed

āmanū

مَعَهُۥ

with him

maʿahu

جَـٰهَدُوا۟

strove

jāhadū

بِأَمْوَٰلِهِمْ

with their wealth

bi-amwālihim

وَأَنفُسِهِمْ ۚ

and their lives

wa-anfusihim

وَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ

And those

wa-ulāika

لَهُمُ

for them

lahumu

ٱلْخَيْرَٰتُ ۖ

(are) the good things

l-khayrātu

وَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ

and those

wa-ulāika

هُمُ

they

humu

ٱلْمُفْلِحُونَ

(are) the successful ones

l-muf'liḥūna

٨٨

But the Messenger and those who believed with him fought with their wealth and their lives. Those will have [all that is] good and it is those who are the successful.

— Saheeh International

أَعَدَّ

Allah has prepared

aʿadda

ٱللَّهُ

Allah has prepared

l-lahu

لَهُمْ

for them

lahum

جَنَّـٰتٍۢ

Gardens

jannātin

تَجْرِى

flows

tajrī

مِن

from

min

تَحْتِهَا

underneath it

taḥtihā

ٱلْأَنْهَـٰرُ

the rivers

l-anhāru

خَـٰلِدِينَ

(will) abide forever

khālidīna

فِيهَا ۚ

in it

fīhā

ذَٰلِكَ

That

dhālika

ٱلْفَوْزُ

(is) the success

l-fawzu

ٱلْعَظِيمُ

the great

l-ʿaẓīmu

٨٩

Allāh has prepared for them gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide eternally. That is the great attainment.

— Saheeh International

وَجَآءَ

And came

wajāa

ٱلْمُعَذِّرُونَ

the ones who make excuses

l-muʿadhirūna

مِنَ

of

mina

ٱلْأَعْرَابِ

the bedouins

l-aʿrābi

لِيُؤْذَنَ

that permission be granted

liyu'dhana

لَهُمْ

to them

lahum

وَقَعَدَ

and sat

waqaʿada

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

كَذَبُوا۟

lied

kadhabū

ٱللَّهَ

(to) Allah

l-laha

وَرَسُولَهُۥ ۚ

and His Messenger

warasūlahu

سَيُصِيبُ

Will strike

sayuṣību

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

كَفَرُوا۟

disbelieved

kafarū

مِنْهُمْ

among them

min'hum

عَذَابٌ

a punishment

ʿadhābun

أَلِيمٌۭ

painful

alīmun

٩٠

And those with excuses among the bedouins came to be permitted [to remain], and they who had lied1 to Allāh and His Messenger sat [at home]. There will strike those who disbelieved among them a painful punishment.

— Saheeh International

لَّيْسَ

Not

laysa

عَلَى

on

ʿalā

ٱلضُّعَفَآءِ

the weak

l-ḍuʿafāi

وَلَا

and not

walā

عَلَى

on

ʿalā

ٱلْمَرْضَىٰ

the sick

l-marḍā

وَلَا

and not

walā

عَلَى

on

ʿalā

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

لَا

not

يَجِدُونَ

they find

yajidūna

مَا

what

يُنفِقُونَ

they (can) spend

yunfiqūna

حَرَجٌ

any blame

ḥarajun

إِذَا

if

idhā

نَصَحُوا۟

they (are) sincere

naṣaḥū

لِلَّهِ

to Allah

lillahi

وَرَسُولِهِۦ ۚ

and His Messenger

warasūlihi

مَا

Not

عَلَى

(is) on

ʿalā

ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ

the good-doers

l-muḥ'sinīna

مِن

any

min

سَبِيلٍۢ ۚ

way (for blame)

sabīlin

وَٱللَّهُ

And Allah

wal-lahu

غَفُورٌۭ

(is) Oft-Forgiving

ghafūrun

رَّحِيمٌۭ

Most Merciful

raḥīmun

٩١

There is not upon the weak or upon the ill or upon those who do not find anything to spend any discomfort [i.e., guilt] when they are sincere to Allāh and His Messenger. There is not upon the doers of good any cause [for blame]. And Allāh is Forgiving and Merciful.

— Saheeh International

وَلَا

And not

walā

عَلَى

on

ʿalā

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

إِذَا

when

idhā

مَآ

when

أَتَوْكَ

they came to you

atawka

لِتَحْمِلَهُمْ

that you provide them with mounts

litaḥmilahum

قُلْتَ

you said

qul'ta

لَآ

Not

أَجِدُ

I find

ajidu

مَآ

what

أَحْمِلُكُمْ

to mount you

aḥmilukum

عَلَيْهِ

on [it]

ʿalayhi

تَوَلَّوا۟

They turned back

tawallaw

وَّأَعْيُنُهُمْ

with their eyes

wa-aʿyunuhum

تَفِيضُ

flowing

tafīḍu

مِنَ

[of]

mina

ٱلدَّمْعِ

(with) the tears

l-damʿi

حَزَنًا

(of) sorrow

ḥazanan

أَلَّا

that not

allā

يَجِدُوا۟

they find

yajidū

مَا

what

يُنفِقُونَ

they (could) spend

yunfiqūna

٩٢

Nor [is there blame] upon those who, when they came to you for you to take them along, you said, "I can find nothing upon which to carry you."1 They turned back while their eyes overflowed with tears out of grief that they could not find something to spend [for the cause of Allāh].

— Saheeh International

۞ إِنَّمَا

Only

innamā

ٱلسَّبِيلُ

the way (blame)

l-sabīlu

عَلَى

(is) on

ʿalā

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

يَسْتَـْٔذِنُونَكَ

ask your permission

yastadhinūnaka

وَهُمْ

while they

wahum

أَغْنِيَآءُ ۚ

(are) rich

aghniyāu

رَضُوا۟

They (are) satisfied

raḍū

بِأَن

to

bi-an

يَكُونُوا۟

be

yakūnū

مَعَ

with

maʿa

ٱلْخَوَالِفِ

those who stay behind

l-khawālifi

وَطَبَعَ

and Allah sealed

waṭabaʿa

ٱللَّهُ

and Allah sealed

l-lahu

عَلَىٰ

[on]

ʿalā

قُلُوبِهِمْ

their hearts

qulūbihim

فَهُمْ

so they

fahum

لَا

(do) not

يَعْلَمُونَ

know

yaʿlamūna

٩٣

The cause [for blame] is only upon those who ask permission of you while they are rich. They are satisfied to be with those who stay behind, and Allāh has sealed over their hearts, so they do not know.

— Saheeh International

يَعْتَذِرُونَ

They will make excuses

yaʿtadhirūna

إِلَيْكُمْ

to you

ilaykum

إِذَا

when

idhā

رَجَعْتُمْ

you (have) returned

rajaʿtum

إِلَيْهِمْ ۚ

to them

ilayhim

قُل

Say

qul

لَّا

(Do) not

تَعْتَذِرُوا۟

make excuse

taʿtadhirū

لَن

never

lan

نُّؤْمِنَ

we will believe

nu'mina

لَكُمْ

you

lakum

قَدْ

Verily

qad

نَبَّأَنَا

Allah (has) informed us

nabba-anā

ٱللَّهُ

Allah (has) informed us

l-lahu

مِنْ

of

min

أَخْبَارِكُمْ ۚ

your news

akhbārikum

وَسَيَرَى

and Allah will see

wasayarā

ٱللَّهُ

and Allah will see

l-lahu

عَمَلَكُمْ

your deeds

ʿamalakum

وَرَسُولُهُۥ

and His Messenger

warasūluhu

ثُمَّ

Then

thumma

تُرَدُّونَ

you will be brought back

turaddūna

إِلَىٰ

to

ilā

عَـٰلِمِ

(the) Knower

ʿālimi

ٱلْغَيْبِ

(of) the unseen

l-ghaybi

وَٱلشَّهَـٰدَةِ

and the seen

wal-shahādati

فَيُنَبِّئُكُم

then He will inform you

fayunabbi-ukum

بِمَا

of what

bimā

كُنتُمْ

you used (to)

kuntum

تَعْمَلُونَ

do

taʿmalūna

٩٤

They will make excuses to you when you have returned to them. Say, "Make no excuse - never will we believe you. Allāh has already informed us of your news [i.e., affair]. And Allāh will observe your deeds, and [so will] His Messenger; then you will be taken back to the Knower of the unseen and the witnessed,1 and He will inform you of what you used to do."

— Saheeh International

سَيَحْلِفُونَ

They will swear

sayaḥlifūna

بِٱللَّهِ

by Allah

bil-lahi

لَكُمْ

to you

lakum

إِذَا

when

idhā

ٱنقَلَبْتُمْ

you returned

inqalabtum

إِلَيْهِمْ

to them

ilayhim

لِتُعْرِضُوا۟

that you may turn away

lituʿ'riḍū

عَنْهُمْ ۖ

from them

ʿanhum

فَأَعْرِضُوا۟

So turn away

fa-aʿriḍū

عَنْهُمْ ۖ

from them

ʿanhum

إِنَّهُمْ

indeed, they

innahum

رِجْسٌۭ ۖ

(are) impure

rij'sun

وَمَأْوَىٰهُمْ

and their abode

wamawāhum

جَهَنَّمُ

(is) Hell

jahannamu

جَزَآءًۢ

a recompense

jazāan

بِمَا

for what

bimā

كَانُوا۟

they used (to)

kānū

يَكْسِبُونَ

earn

yaksibūna

٩٥

They will swear by Allāh to you when you return to them that you would leave them alone. So leave them alone; indeed they are evil; and their refuge is Hell as recompense for what they had been earning.

— Saheeh International

يَحْلِفُونَ

They swear

yaḥlifūna

لَكُمْ

to you

lakum

لِتَرْضَوْا۟

that you may be pleased

litarḍaw

عَنْهُمْ ۖ

with them

ʿanhum

فَإِن

But if

fa-in

تَرْضَوْا۟

you are pleased

tarḍaw

عَنْهُمْ

with them

ʿanhum

فَإِنَّ

then indeed

fa-inna

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

لَا

(is) not pleased

يَرْضَىٰ

(is) not pleased

yarḍā

عَنِ

with

ʿani

ٱلْقَوْمِ

the people

l-qawmi

ٱلْفَـٰسِقِينَ

(who are) defiantly disobedient

l-fāsiqīna

٩٦

They swear to you so that you might be satisfied with them. But if you should be satisfied with them - indeed, Allāh is not satisfied with a defiantly disobedient people.

— Saheeh International

ٱلْأَعْرَابُ

The bedouins

al-aʿrābu

أَشَدُّ

(are) stronger

ashaddu

كُفْرًۭا

(in) disbelief

kuf'ran

وَنِفَاقًۭا

and hypocrisy

wanifāqan

وَأَجْدَرُ

and more likely

wa-ajdaru

أَلَّا

that not

allā

يَعْلَمُوا۟

they know

yaʿlamū

حُدُودَ

(the) limits

ḥudūda

مَآ

(of) what

أَنزَلَ

Allah (has) revealed

anzala

ٱللَّهُ

Allah (has) revealed

l-lahu

عَلَىٰ

to

ʿalā

رَسُولِهِۦ ۗ

His Messenger

rasūlihi

وَٱللَّهُ

And Allah

wal-lahu

عَلِيمٌ

(is) All-Knower

ʿalīmun

حَكِيمٌۭ

All-Wise

ḥakīmun

٩٧

The bedouins are stronger in disbelief and hypocrisy and more likely not to know the limits of what [laws] Allāh has revealed to His Messenger. And Allāh is Knowing and Wise.

— Saheeh International

وَمِنَ

And among

wamina

ٱلْأَعْرَابِ

the bedouins

l-aʿrābi

مَن

(is he) who

man

يَتَّخِذُ

takes

yattakhidhu

مَا

what

يُنفِقُ

he spends

yunfiqu

مَغْرَمًۭا

(as) a loss

maghraman

وَيَتَرَبَّصُ

and he awaits

wayatarabbaṣu

بِكُمُ

for you

bikumu

ٱلدَّوَآئِرَ ۚ

the turns (of misfortune)

l-dawāira

عَلَيْهِمْ

Upon them

ʿalayhim

دَآئِرَةُ

(will be) the turn

dāiratu

ٱلسَّوْءِ ۗ

(of) the evil

l-sawi

وَٱللَّهُ

And Allah

wal-lahu

سَمِيعٌ

(is) All-Hearer

samīʿun

عَلِيمٌۭ

All-Knower

ʿalīmun

٩٨

And among the bedouins are some who consider what they spend as a loss1 and await for you turns of misfortune. Upon them will be a misfortune of evil. And Allāh is Hearing and Knowing.

— Saheeh International

وَمِنَ

But among

wamina

ٱلْأَعْرَابِ

the bedouins

l-aʿrābi

مَن

(is he) who

man

يُؤْمِنُ

believes

yu'minu

بِٱللَّهِ

in Allah

bil-lahi

وَٱلْيَوْمِ

and the Day

wal-yawmi

ٱلْـَٔاخِرِ

the Last

l-ākhiri

وَيَتَّخِذُ

and takes

wayattakhidhu

مَا

what

يُنفِقُ

he spends

yunfiqu

قُرُبَـٰتٍ

(as) means of nearness

qurubātin

عِندَ

with

ʿinda

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

وَصَلَوَٰتِ

and blessings

waṣalawāti

ٱلرَّسُولِ ۚ

(of) the Messenger

l-rasūli

أَلَآ

Behold

alā

إِنَّهَا

Indeed, it

innahā

قُرْبَةٌۭ

(is) a means of nearness

qur'batun

لَّهُمْ ۚ

for them

lahum

سَيُدْخِلُهُمُ

Allah will admit them

sayud'khiluhumu

ٱللَّهُ

Allah will admit them

l-lahu

فِى

to

رَحْمَتِهِۦٓ ۗ

His Mercy

raḥmatihi

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

غَفُورٌۭ

(is) Oft-Forgiving

ghafūrun

رَّحِيمٌۭ

Most Merciful

raḥīmun

٩٩

But among the bedouins are some who believe in Allāh and the Last Day and consider what they spend as means of nearness to Allāh and of [obtaining] invocations of the Messenger. Unquestionably, it is a means of nearness for them. Allāh will admit them to His mercy. Indeed, Allāh is Forgiving and Merciful.

— Saheeh International

وَٱلسَّـٰبِقُونَ

And the forerunners

wal-sābiqūna

ٱلْأَوَّلُونَ

the first

l-awalūna

مِنَ

among

mina

ٱلْمُهَـٰجِرِينَ

the emigrants

l-muhājirīna

وَٱلْأَنصَارِ

and the helpers

wal-anṣāri

وَٱلَّذِينَ

and those who

wa-alladhīna

ٱتَّبَعُوهُم

followed them

ittabaʿūhum

بِإِحْسَـٰنٍۢ

in righteousness

bi-iḥ'sānin

رَّضِىَ

Allah is pleased

raḍiya

ٱللَّهُ

Allah is pleased

l-lahu

عَنْهُمْ

with them

ʿanhum

وَرَضُوا۟

and they are pleased

waraḍū

عَنْهُ

with Him

ʿanhu

وَأَعَدَّ

And He has prepared

wa-aʿadda

لَهُمْ

for them

lahum

جَنَّـٰتٍۢ

Gardens

jannātin

تَجْرِى

flows

tajrī

تَحْتَهَا

underneath it

taḥtahā

ٱلْأَنْهَـٰرُ

the rivers

l-anhāru

خَـٰلِدِينَ

will abide

khālidīna

فِيهَآ

in it

fīhā

أَبَدًۭا ۚ

forever

abadan

ذَٰلِكَ

That

dhālika

ٱلْفَوْزُ

(is) the success

l-fawzu

ٱلْعَظِيمُ

the great

l-ʿaẓīmu

١٠٠

And the first forerunners [in the faith] among the Muhājireen1 and the Anṣār2 and those who followed them with good conduct - Allāh is pleased with them and they are pleased with Him, and He has prepared for them gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide forever. That is the great attainment.

— Saheeh International

وَمِمَّنْ

And among those

wamimman

حَوْلَكُم

around you

ḥawlakum

مِّنَ

of

mina

ٱلْأَعْرَابِ

the bedouins

l-aʿrābi

مُنَـٰفِقُونَ ۖ

(are) hypocrites

munāfiqūna

وَمِنْ

and (also) from

wamin

أَهْلِ

people

ahli

ٱلْمَدِينَةِ ۖ

(of) the Madinah

l-madīnati

مَرَدُوا۟

They persist

maradū

عَلَى

in

ʿalā

ٱلنِّفَاقِ

the hypocrisy

l-nifāqi

لَا

not

تَعْلَمُهُمْ ۖ

you know them

taʿlamuhum

نَحْنُ

We

naḥnu

نَعْلَمُهُمْ ۚ

[We] know them

naʿlamuhum

سَنُعَذِّبُهُم

We will punish them

sanuʿadhibuhum

مَّرَّتَيْنِ

twice

marratayni

ثُمَّ

then

thumma

يُرَدُّونَ

they will be returned

yuraddūna

إِلَىٰ

to

ilā

عَذَابٍ

a punishment

ʿadhābin

عَظِيمٍۢ

great

ʿaẓīmin

١٠١

And among those around you of the bedouins are hypocrites, and [also] from the people of Madīnah. They have persisted in hypocrisy. You, [O Muḥammad], do not know them, [but] We know them. We will punish them twice [in this world]; then they will be returned to a great punishment.

— Saheeh International

وَءَاخَرُونَ

And others

waākharūna

ٱعْتَرَفُوا۟

(who have) acknowledged

iʿ'tarafū

بِذُنُوبِهِمْ

their sins

bidhunūbihim

خَلَطُوا۟

They had mixed

khalaṭū

عَمَلًۭا

a deed

ʿamalan

صَـٰلِحًۭا

righteous

ṣāliḥan

وَءَاخَرَ

(with) other

waākhara

سَيِّئًا

(that was) evil

sayyi-an

عَسَى

Perhaps

ʿasā

ٱللَّهُ

Allah

l-lahu

أَن

[that]

an

يَتُوبَ

will turn (in mercy)

yatūba

عَلَيْهِمْ ۚ

to them

ʿalayhim

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

غَفُورٌۭ

(is) Oft-Forgiving

ghafūrun

رَّحِيمٌ

Most Merciful

raḥīmun

١٠٢

And [there are] others who have acknowledged their sins. They had mixed [i.e., polluted] a righteous deed with another that was bad.1 Perhaps Allāh will turn to them in forgiveness. Indeed, Allāh is Forgiving and Merciful.

— Saheeh International

خُذْ

Take

khudh

مِنْ

from

min

أَمْوَٰلِهِمْ

their wealth

amwālihim

صَدَقَةًۭ

a charity

ṣadaqatan

تُطَهِّرُهُمْ

purifying them

tuṭahhiruhum

وَتُزَكِّيهِم

and cause them increase

watuzakkīhim

بِهَا

by it

bihā

وَصَلِّ

and bless

waṣalli

عَلَيْهِمْ ۖ

[upon] them

ʿalayhim

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

صَلَوٰتَكَ

your blessings

ṣalataka

سَكَنٌۭ

(are a) reassurance

sakanun

لَّهُمْ ۗ

for them

lahum

وَٱللَّهُ

And Allah

wal-lahu

سَمِيعٌ

(is) All-Hearer

samīʿun

عَلِيمٌ

All-Knower

ʿalīmun

١٠٣

Take, [O Muḥammad], from their wealth a charity by which you purify them and cause them increase, and invoke [Allāh's blessings] upon them. Indeed, your invocations are reassurance for them. And Allāh is Hearing and Knowing.

— Saheeh International

أَلَمْ

Do not

alam

يَعْلَمُوٓا۟

they know

yaʿlamū

أَنَّ

that

anna

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

هُوَ

(is) He

huwa

يَقْبَلُ

(Who) accepts

yaqbalu

ٱلتَّوْبَةَ

the repentance

l-tawbata

عَنْ

from

ʿan

عِبَادِهِۦ

His slaves

ʿibādihi

وَيَأْخُذُ

and takes

wayakhudhu

ٱلصَّدَقَـٰتِ

the charities

l-ṣadaqāti

وَأَنَّ

and that

wa-anna

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

هُوَ

He

huwa

ٱلتَّوَّابُ

(is) the Acceptor of repentance

l-tawābu

ٱلرَّحِيمُ

the Most Merciful

l-raḥīmu

١٠٤

Do they not know that it is Allāh who accepts repentance from His servants and receives charities and that it is Allāh who is the Accepting of Repentance,1 the Merciful?

— Saheeh International

وَقُلِ

And say

waquli

ٱعْمَلُوا۟

Do

iʿ'malū

فَسَيَرَى

then Allah will see

fasayarā

ٱللَّهُ

then Allah will see

l-lahu

عَمَلَكُمْ

your deed

ʿamalakum

وَرَسُولُهُۥ

and His Messenger

warasūluhu

وَٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ ۖ

and the believers

wal-mu'minūna

وَسَتُرَدُّونَ

And you will be brought back

wasaturaddūna

إِلَىٰ

to

ilā

عَـٰلِمِ

(the) Knower

ʿālimi

ٱلْغَيْبِ

(of) the unseen

l-ghaybi

وَٱلشَّهَـٰدَةِ

and the seen

wal-shahādati

فَيُنَبِّئُكُم

then He will inform you

fayunabbi-ukum

بِمَا

of what

bimā

كُنتُمْ

you used (to)

kuntum

تَعْمَلُونَ

do

taʿmalūna

١٠٥

And say, "Do [as you will], for Allāh will see your deeds, and [so will] His Messenger and the believers. And you will be returned to the Knower of the unseen and the witnessed, and He will inform you of what you used to do."

— Saheeh International

وَءَاخَرُونَ

And others

waākharūna

مُرْجَوْنَ

deferred

mur'jawna

لِأَمْرِ

for the Command of Allah

li-amri

ٱللَّهِ

for the Command of Allah

l-lahi

إِمَّا

whether

immā

يُعَذِّبُهُمْ

He will punish them

yuʿadhibuhum

وَإِمَّا

or

wa-immā

يَتُوبُ

He will turn (in mercy)

yatūbu

عَلَيْهِمْ ۗ

to them

ʿalayhim

وَٱللَّهُ

And Allah

wal-lahu

عَلِيمٌ

(is) All-Knower

ʿalīmun

حَكِيمٌۭ

All-Wise

ḥakīmun

١٠٦

And [there are] others deferred until the command of Allāh - whether He will punish them or whether He will forgive them. And Allāh is Knowing and Wise.

— Saheeh International

وَٱلَّذِينَ

And those who

wa-alladhīna

ٱتَّخَذُوا۟

take

ittakhadhū

مَسْجِدًۭا

a masjid

masjidan

ضِرَارًۭا

(for causing) harm

ḍirāran

وَكُفْرًۭا

and (for) disbelief

wakuf'ran

وَتَفْرِيقًۢا

and (for) division

watafrīqan

بَيْنَ

among

bayna

ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ

the believers

l-mu'minīna

وَإِرْصَادًۭا

and (as) a station

wa-ir'ṣādan

لِّمَنْ

for whoever

liman

حَارَبَ

warred

ḥāraba

ٱللَّهَ

(against) Allah

l-laha

وَرَسُولَهُۥ

and His Messenger

warasūlahu

مِن

before

min

قَبْلُ ۚ

before

qablu

وَلَيَحْلِفُنَّ

And surely they will swear

walayaḥlifunna

إِنْ

Not

in

أَرَدْنَآ

we wish

aradnā

إِلَّا

except

illā

ٱلْحُسْنَىٰ ۖ

the good

l-ḥus'nā

وَٱللَّهُ

But Allah

wal-lahu

يَشْهَدُ

bears witness

yashhadu

إِنَّهُمْ

indeed, they

innahum

لَكَـٰذِبُونَ

(are) surely liars

lakādhibūna

١٠٧

And [there are] those [hypocrites] who took for themselves a mosque for causing harm and disbelief and division among the believers and as a station for whoever had warred against Allāh and His Messenger before. And they will surely swear, "We intended only the best." And Allāh testifies that indeed they are liars.

— Saheeh International

لَا

(Do) not

تَقُمْ

stand

taqum

فِيهِ

in it

fīhi

أَبَدًۭا ۚ

ever

abadan

لَّمَسْجِدٌ

A masjid

lamasjidun

أُسِّسَ

founded

ussisa

عَلَى

on

ʿalā

ٱلتَّقْوَىٰ

the righteousness

l-taqwā

مِنْ

from

min

أَوَّلِ

(the) first

awwali

يَوْمٍ

day

yawmin

أَحَقُّ

(is) more worthy

aḥaqqu

أَن

that

an

تَقُومَ

you stand

taqūma

فِيهِ ۚ

in it

fīhi

فِيهِ

Within it

fīhi

رِجَالٌۭ

(are) men

rijālun

يُحِبُّونَ

who love

yuḥibbūna

أَن

to

an

يَتَطَهَّرُوا۟ ۚ

purify themselves

yataṭahharū

وَٱللَّهُ

and Allah

wal-lahu

يُحِبُّ

loves

yuḥibbu

ٱلْمُطَّهِّرِينَ

the ones who purify themselves

l-muṭahirīna

١٠٨

Do not stand [for prayer] within it - ever. A mosque founded on righteousness from the first day1 is more worthy for you to stand in. Within it are men who love to purify themselves; and Allāh loves those who purify themselves.

— Saheeh International

أَفَمَنْ

Then is (one) who

afaman

أَسَّسَ

founded

assasa

بُنْيَـٰنَهُۥ

his building

bun'yānahu

عَلَىٰ

on

ʿalā

تَقْوَىٰ

righteousness

taqwā

مِنَ

from

mina

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

وَرِضْوَٰنٍ

and (His) pleasure

wariḍ'wānin

خَيْرٌ

better

khayrun

أَم

or

am

مَّنْ

(one) who

man

أَسَّسَ

founded

assasa

بُنْيَـٰنَهُۥ

his building

bun'yānahu

عَلَىٰ

on

ʿalā

شَفَا

edge

shafā

جُرُفٍ

(of) a cliff

jurufin

هَارٍۢ

(about to) collapse

hārin

فَٱنْهَارَ

so it collapsed

fa-in'hāra

بِهِۦ

with him

bihi

فِى

in

نَارِ

(the) Fire

nāri

جَهَنَّمَ ۗ

(of) Hell

jahannama

وَٱللَّهُ

And Allah

wal-lahu

لَا

(does) not

يَهْدِى

guide

yahdī

ٱلْقَوْمَ

the wrongdoing people

l-qawma

ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ

the wrongdoing people

l-ẓālimīna

١٠٩

Then is one who laid the foundation of his building on righteousness [with fear] from Allāh and [seeking] His approval better or one who laid the foundation of his building on the edge of a bank about to collapse, so it collapsed with him into the fire of Hell? And Allāh does not guide the wrongdoing people.

— Saheeh International

لَا

Not

يَزَالُ

(will) cease

yazālu

بُنْيَـٰنُهُمُ

their building

bun'yānuhumu

ٱلَّذِى

which

alladhī

بَنَوْا۟

they built

banaw

رِيبَةًۭ

a (cause of) doubt

rībatan

فِى

in

قُلُوبِهِمْ

their hearts

qulūbihim

إِلَّآ

except

illā

أَن

that

an

تَقَطَّعَ

(are) cut into pieces

taqaṭṭaʿa

قُلُوبُهُمْ ۗ

their hearts

qulūbuhum

وَٱللَّهُ

And Allah

wal-lahu

عَلِيمٌ

(is) All-Knower

ʿalīmun

حَكِيمٌ

All-Wise

ḥakīmun

١١٠

Their building which they built will not cease to be a [cause of] skepticism in their hearts until their hearts are cut [i.e., stopped]. And Allāh is Knowing and Wise.

— Saheeh International

۞ إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

ٱشْتَرَىٰ

(has) purchased

ish'tarā

مِنَ

from

mina

ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ

the believers

l-mu'minīna

أَنفُسَهُمْ

their lives

anfusahum

وَأَمْوَٰلَهُم

and their wealth

wa-amwālahum

بِأَنَّ

because

bi-anna

لَهُمُ

for them

lahumu

ٱلْجَنَّةَ ۚ

(is) Paradise

l-janata

يُقَـٰتِلُونَ

They fight

yuqātilūna

فِى

in

سَبِيلِ

(the) way

sabīli

ٱللَّهِ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

فَيَقْتُلُونَ

they slay

fayaqtulūna

وَيُقْتَلُونَ ۖ

and they are slain

wayuq'talūna

وَعْدًا

A promise

waʿdan

عَلَيْهِ

upon Him

ʿalayhi

حَقًّۭا

true

ḥaqqan

فِى

in

ٱلتَّوْرَىٰةِ

the Taurat

l-tawrāti

وَٱلْإِنجِيلِ

and the Injeel

wal-injīli

وَٱلْقُرْءَانِ ۚ

and the Quran

wal-qur'āni

وَمَنْ

And who

waman

أَوْفَىٰ

(is) more faithful

awfā

بِعَهْدِهِۦ

to his promise

biʿahdihi

مِنَ

than

mina

ٱللَّهِ ۚ

Allah

l-lahi

فَٱسْتَبْشِرُوا۟

So rejoice

fa-is'tabshirū

بِبَيْعِكُمُ

in your transaction

bibayʿikumu

ٱلَّذِى

which

alladhī

بَايَعْتُم

you have contracted

bāyaʿtum

بِهِۦ ۚ

[with it]

bihi

وَذَٰلِكَ

And that

wadhālika

هُوَ

it

huwa

ٱلْفَوْزُ

(is) the success

l-fawzu

ٱلْعَظِيمُ

the great

l-ʿaẓīmu

١١١

Indeed, Allāh has purchased from the believers their lives and their properties [in exchange] for that they will have Paradise. They fight in the cause of Allāh, so they kill and are killed. [It is] a true promise [binding] upon Him in the Torah and the Gospel and the Qur’ān. And who is truer to his covenant than Allāh? So rejoice in your transaction which you have contracted. And it is that which is the great attainment.

— Saheeh International

ٱلتَّـٰٓئِبُونَ

Those who turn in repentance

al-tāibūna

ٱلْعَـٰبِدُونَ

those who worship

l-ʿābidūna

ٱلْحَـٰمِدُونَ

those who praise

l-ḥāmidūna

ٱلسَّـٰٓئِحُونَ

those who go out

l-sāiḥūna

ٱلرَّٰكِعُونَ

those who bow down

l-rākiʿūna

ٱلسَّـٰجِدُونَ

those who prostrate

l-sājidūna

ٱلْـَٔامِرُونَ

those who enjoin

l-āmirūna

بِٱلْمَعْرُوفِ

the right

bil-maʿrūfi

وَٱلنَّاهُونَ

and those who forbid

wal-nāhūna

عَنِ

[on]

ʿani

ٱلْمُنكَرِ

the wrong

l-munkari

وَٱلْحَـٰفِظُونَ

and those who observe

wal-ḥāfiẓūna

لِحُدُودِ

(the) limits

liḥudūdi

ٱللَّهِ ۗ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

وَبَشِّرِ

And give glad tidings

wabashiri

ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ

(to) the believers

l-mu'minīna

١١٢

[Such believers are] the repentant, the worshippers, the praisers [of Allāh], the travelers [for His cause], those who bow and prostrate [in prayer], those who enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong, and those who observe the limits [set by] Allāh. And give good tidings to the believers.

— Saheeh International

مَا

Not

كَانَ

(it) is

kāna

لِلنَّبِىِّ

for the Prophet

lilnnabiyyi

وَٱلَّذِينَ

and those who

wa-alladhīna

ءَامَنُوٓا۟

believe

āmanū

أَن

that

an

يَسْتَغْفِرُوا۟

they ask forgiveness

yastaghfirū

لِلْمُشْرِكِينَ

for the polytheists

lil'mush'rikīna

وَلَوْ

even though

walaw

كَانُوٓا۟

they be

kānū

أُو۟لِى

near of kin

ulī

قُرْبَىٰ

near of kin

qur'bā

مِنۢ

after

min

بَعْدِ

after

baʿdi

مَا

[what]

تَبَيَّنَ

has become clear

tabayyana

لَهُمْ

to them

lahum

أَنَّهُمْ

that they

annahum

أَصْحَـٰبُ

(are the) companions

aṣḥābu

ٱلْجَحِيمِ

(of) the Hellfire

l-jaḥīmi

١١٣

It is not for the Prophet and those who have believed to ask forgiveness for the polytheists, even if they were relatives, after it has become clear to them that they are companions of Hellfire.

— Saheeh International

وَمَا

And not

wamā

كَانَ

was

kāna

ٱسْتِغْفَارُ

(the) asking of forgiveness

is'tigh'fāru

إِبْرَٰهِيمَ

(by) Ibrahim

ib'rāhīma

لِأَبِيهِ

for his father

li-abīhi

إِلَّا

except

illā

عَن

because

ʿan

مَّوْعِدَةٍۢ

(of) a promise

mawʿidatin

وَعَدَهَآ

he had promised it

waʿadahā

إِيَّاهُ

(to) him

iyyāhu

فَلَمَّا

But when

falammā

تَبَيَّنَ

it became clear

tabayyana

لَهُۥٓ

to him

lahu

أَنَّهُۥ

that he

annahu

عَدُوٌّۭ

(was) an enemy

ʿaduwwun

لِّلَّهِ

to Allah

lillahi

تَبَرَّأَ

he disassociated

tabarra-a

مِنْهُ ۚ

from him

min'hu

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

إِبْرَٰهِيمَ

Ibrahim

ib'rāhīma

لَأَوَّٰهٌ

(was) compassionate

la-awwāhun

حَلِيمٌۭ

forbearing

ḥalīmun

١١٤

And the request of forgiveness of Abraham for his father was only because of a promise he had made to him. But when it became apparent to him [i.e., Abraham] that he [i.e., the father] was an enemy to Allāh, he disassociated himself from him. Indeed was Abraham compassionate and patient.

— Saheeh International

وَمَا

And not

wamā

كَانَ

is

kāna

ٱللَّهُ

(for) Allah

l-lahu

لِيُضِلَّ

that He lets go astray

liyuḍilla

قَوْمًۢا

a people

qawman

بَعْدَ

after

baʿda

إِذْ

[when]

idh

هَدَىٰهُمْ

He has guided them

hadāhum

حَتَّىٰ

until

ḥattā

يُبَيِّنَ

He makes clear

yubayyina

لَهُم

to them

lahum

مَّا

what

يَتَّقُونَ ۚ

they should fear

yattaqūna

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

بِكُلِّ

(of) every

bikulli

شَىْءٍ

thing

shayin

عَلِيمٌ

(is) All-Knower

ʿalīmun

١١٥

And Allāh would not let a people stray after He has guided them until He makes clear to them what they should avoid. Indeed, Allāh is Knowing of all things.

— Saheeh International

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

لَهُۥ

to Him (belongs)

lahu

مُلْكُ

the dominion

mul'ku

ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ

(of) the heavens

l-samāwāti

وَٱلْأَرْضِ ۖ

and the earth

wal-arḍi

يُحْىِۦ

He gives life

yuḥ'yī

وَيُمِيتُ ۚ

and He causes death

wayumītu

وَمَا

And not

wamā

لَكُم

for you

lakum

مِّن

besides Allah

min

دُونِ

besides Allah

dūni

ٱللَّهِ

besides Allah

l-lahi

مِن

any

min

وَلِىٍّۢ

protector

waliyyin

وَلَا

and not

walā

نَصِيرٍۢ

any helper

naṣīrin

١١٦

Indeed, to Allāh belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth; He gives life and causes death. And you have not besides Allāh any protector or any helper.

— Saheeh International

لَّقَد

Verily

laqad

تَّابَ

Allah turned (in mercy)

tāba

ٱللَّهُ

Allah turned (in mercy)

l-lahu

عَلَى

to

ʿalā

ٱلنَّبِىِّ

the Prophet

l-nabiyi

وَٱلْمُهَـٰجِرِينَ

and the emigrants

wal-muhājirīna

وَٱلْأَنصَارِ

and the helpers

wal-anṣāri

ٱلَّذِينَ

[those] who

alladhīna

ٱتَّبَعُوهُ

followed him

ittabaʿūhu

فِى

in

سَاعَةِ

(the) hour

sāʿati

ٱلْعُسْرَةِ

(of) difficulty

l-ʿus'rati

مِنۢ

after

min

بَعْدِ

after

baʿdi

مَا

[what]

كَادَ

had nearly

kāda

يَزِيغُ

deviated

yazīghu

قُلُوبُ

(the) hearts

qulūbu

فَرِيقٍۢ

(of) a party

farīqin

مِّنْهُمْ

of them

min'hum

ثُمَّ

then

thumma

تَابَ

He turned (in mercy)

tāba

عَلَيْهِمْ ۚ

to them

ʿalayhim

إِنَّهُۥ

Indeed, He

innahu

بِهِمْ

to them

bihim

رَءُوفٌۭ

(is) Most Kind

raūfun

رَّحِيمٌۭ

Most Merciful

raḥīmun

١١٧

Allāh has already forgiven the Prophet and the Muhājireen and the Anṣār who followed him in the hour of difficulty after the hearts of a party of them had almost inclined [to doubt], and then He forgave them. Indeed, He was to them Kind and Merciful.

— Saheeh International

وَعَلَى

And on

waʿalā

ٱلثَّلَـٰثَةِ

the three

l-thalāthati

ٱلَّذِينَ

(of) those who

alladhīna

خُلِّفُوا۟

were left behind

khullifū

حَتَّىٰٓ

until

ḥattā

إِذَا

when

idhā

ضَاقَتْ

(was) straitened

ḍāqat

عَلَيْهِمُ

for them

ʿalayhimu

ٱلْأَرْضُ

the earth

l-arḍu

بِمَا

though

bimā

رَحُبَتْ

it was vast

raḥubat

وَضَاقَتْ

And (was) straitened

waḍāqat

عَلَيْهِمْ

for them

ʿalayhim

أَنفُسُهُمْ

their own souls

anfusuhum

وَظَنُّوٓا۟

and they were certain

waẓannū

أَن

that

an

لَّا

(there is) no

مَلْجَأَ

refuge

malja-a

مِنَ

from

mina

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

إِلَّآ

except

illā

إِلَيْهِ

to Him

ilayhi

ثُمَّ

Then

thumma

تَابَ

He turned (in mercy)

tāba

عَلَيْهِمْ

to them

ʿalayhim

لِيَتُوبُوٓا۟ ۚ

that they may repent

liyatūbū

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

هُوَ

He

huwa

ٱلتَّوَّابُ

(is) the Acceptor of repentance

l-tawābu

ٱلرَّحِيمُ

the Most Merciful

l-raḥīmu

١١٨

And [He also forgave] the three who were left alone [i.e., boycotted, regretting their error] to the point that the earth closed in on them in spite of its vastness1 and their souls confined [i.e., anguished] them and they were certain that there is no refuge from Allāh except in Him. Then He turned to them so they could repent. Indeed, Allāh is the Accepting of Repentance,2 the Merciful.

— Saheeh International

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا

O you who believe

yāayyuhā

ٱلَّذِينَ

O you who believe

alladhīna

ءَامَنُوا۟

O you who believe

āmanū

ٱتَّقُوا۟

Fear

ittaqū

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

وَكُونُوا۟

and be

wakūnū

مَعَ

with

maʿa

ٱلصَّـٰدِقِينَ

those who are truthful

l-ṣādiqīna

١١٩

O you who have believed, fear Allāh and be with those who are true.

— Saheeh International

مَا

Not

كَانَ

it was

kāna

لِأَهْلِ

(for) the people

li-ahli

ٱلْمَدِينَةِ

of the Madinah

l-madīnati

وَمَنْ

and who

waman

حَوْلَهُم

were around them

ḥawlahum

مِّنَ

of

mina

ٱلْأَعْرَابِ

the bedouins

l-aʿrābi

أَن

that

an

يَتَخَلَّفُوا۟

they remain behind

yatakhallafū

عَن

after

ʿan

رَّسُولِ

the Messenger

rasūli

ٱللَّهِ

of Allah

l-lahi

وَلَا

and not

walā

يَرْغَبُوا۟

they prefer

yarghabū

بِأَنفُسِهِمْ

their lives

bi-anfusihim

عَن

to

ʿan

نَّفْسِهِۦ ۚ

his life

nafsihi

ذَٰلِكَ

That is

dhālika

بِأَنَّهُمْ

because [they]

bi-annahum

لَا

(does) not

يُصِيبُهُمْ

afflict them

yuṣībuhum

ظَمَأٌۭ

thirst

ẓama-on

وَلَا

and not

walā

نَصَبٌۭ

fatigue

naṣabun

وَلَا

and not

walā

مَخْمَصَةٌۭ

hunger

makhmaṣatun

فِى

in

سَبِيلِ

(the) way

sabīli

ٱللَّهِ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

وَلَا

and not

walā

يَطَـُٔونَ

they step

yaṭaūna

مَوْطِئًۭا

any step

mawṭi-an

يَغِيظُ

that angers

yaghīẓu

ٱلْكُفَّارَ

the disbelievers

l-kufāra

وَلَا

and not

walā

يَنَالُونَ

they inflict

yanālūna

مِنْ

on

min

عَدُوٍّۢ

an enemy

ʿaduwwin

نَّيْلًا

an infliction

naylan

إِلَّا

except

illā

كُتِبَ

is recorded

kutiba

لَهُم

for them

lahum

بِهِۦ

in it

bihi

عَمَلٌۭ

(as) a deed

ʿamalun

صَـٰلِحٌ ۚ

righteous

ṣāliḥun

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

لَا

(does) not

يُضِيعُ

allow to be lost

yuḍīʿu

أَجْرَ

the reward

ajra

ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ

(of) the good-doers

l-muḥ'sinīna

١٢٠

It was not [proper] for the people of Madīnah and those surrounding them of the bedouins that they remain behind after [the departure of] the Messenger of Allāh or that they prefer themselves over his self.1 That is because they are not afflicted by thirst or fatigue or hunger in the cause of Allāh, nor do they tread on any ground that enrages the disbelievers, nor do they inflict upon an enemy any infliction but that it is registered for them as a righteous deed. Indeed, Allāh does not allow to be lost the reward of the doers of good.

— Saheeh International

وَلَا

And not

walā

يُنفِقُونَ

they spend

yunfiqūna

نَفَقَةًۭ

any spending

nafaqatan

صَغِيرَةًۭ

small

ṣaghīratan

وَلَا

and not

walā

كَبِيرَةًۭ

big

kabīratan

وَلَا

and not

walā

يَقْطَعُونَ

they cross

yaqṭaʿūna

وَادِيًا

a valley

wādiyan

إِلَّا

but

illā

كُتِبَ

is recorded

kutiba

لَهُمْ

for them

lahum

لِيَجْزِيَهُمُ

that Allah may reward them

liyajziyahumu

ٱللَّهُ

that Allah may reward them

l-lahu

أَحْسَنَ

the best

aḥsana

مَا

(of) what

كَانُوا۟

they used (to)

kānū

يَعْمَلُونَ

do

yaʿmalūna

١٢١

Nor do they spend an expenditure, small or large, or cross a valley but that it is registered for them that Allāh may reward them for the best of what they were doing.

— Saheeh International

۞ وَمَا

And not

wamā

كَانَ

is

kāna

ٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ

(for) the believers

l-mu'minūna

لِيَنفِرُوا۟

that they go forth

liyanfirū

كَآفَّةًۭ ۚ

all together

kāffatan

فَلَوْلَا

So if not

falawlā

نَفَرَ

go forth

nafara

مِن

from

min

كُلِّ

every

kulli

فِرْقَةٍۢ

group

fir'qatin

مِّنْهُمْ

among them

min'hum

طَآئِفَةٌۭ

a party

ṭāifatun

لِّيَتَفَقَّهُوا۟

that they may obtain understanding

liyatafaqqahū

فِى

in

ٱلدِّينِ

the religion

l-dīni

وَلِيُنذِرُوا۟

and that they may warn

waliyundhirū

قَوْمَهُمْ

their people

qawmahum

إِذَا

when

idhā

رَجَعُوٓا۟

they return

rajaʿū

إِلَيْهِمْ

to them

ilayhim

لَعَلَّهُمْ

so that they may

laʿallahum

يَحْذَرُونَ

beware

yaḥdharūna

١٢٢

And it is not for the believers to go forth [to battle] all at once. For there should separate from every division of them a group [remaining] to obtain understanding in the religion and warn [i.e., advise] their people when they return to them that they might be cautious.

— Saheeh International

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا

O you who believe

yāayyuhā

ٱلَّذِينَ

O you who believe

alladhīna

ءَامَنُوا۟

O you who believe

āmanū

قَـٰتِلُوا۟

Fight

qātilū

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

يَلُونَكُم

(are) close to you

yalūnakum

مِّنَ

of

mina

ٱلْكُفَّارِ

the disbelievers

l-kufāri

وَلْيَجِدُوا۟

and let them find

walyajidū

فِيكُمْ

in you

fīkum

غِلْظَةًۭ ۚ

harshness

ghil'ẓatan

وَٱعْلَمُوٓا۟

And know

wa-iʿ'lamū

أَنَّ

that

anna

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

مَعَ

(is) with

maʿa

ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ

those who fear (Him)

l-mutaqīna

١٢٣

O you who have believed, fight against those adjacent to you of the disbelievers and let them find in you harshness. And know that Allāh is with the righteous.

— Saheeh International

وَإِذَا

And whenever

wa-idhā

مَآ

And whenever

أُنزِلَتْ

is revealed

unzilat

سُورَةٌۭ

a Surah

sūratun

فَمِنْهُم

among them

famin'hum

مَّن

(are some) who

man

يَقُولُ

say

yaqūlu

أَيُّكُمْ

Which of you

ayyukum

زَادَتْهُ

(has) increased [it]

zādathu

هَـٰذِهِۦٓ

(by) this

hādhihi

إِيمَـٰنًۭا ۚ

(in) faith

īmānan

فَأَمَّا

As for

fa-ammā

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

ءَامَنُوا۟

believe

āmanū

فَزَادَتْهُمْ

then it has increased them

fazādathum

إِيمَـٰنًۭا

(in) faith

īmānan

وَهُمْ

and they

wahum

يَسْتَبْشِرُونَ

rejoice

yastabshirūna

١٢٤

And whenever a sūrah is revealed, there are among them [i.e., the hypocrites] those who say, "Which of you has this increased in faith?" As for those who believed, it has increased them in faith, while they are rejoicing.

— Saheeh International

وَأَمَّا

But as for

wa-ammā

ٱلَّذِينَ

those

alladhīna

فِى

in

قُلُوبِهِم

their hearts

qulūbihim

مَّرَضٌۭ

(is) a disease

maraḍun

فَزَادَتْهُمْ

(it) increases them

fazādathum

رِجْسًا

(in) evil

rij'san

إِلَىٰ

to

ilā

رِجْسِهِمْ

their evil

rij'sihim

وَمَاتُوا۟

And they die

wamātū

وَهُمْ

while they

wahum

كَـٰفِرُونَ

(are) disbelievers

kāfirūna

١٢٥

But as for those in whose hearts is disease, it has [only] increased them in evil [in addition] to their evil.1 And they will have died while they are disbelievers.

— Saheeh International

أَوَلَا

Do not

awalā

يَرَوْنَ

they see

yarawna

أَنَّهُمْ

that they

annahum

يُفْتَنُونَ

are tried

yuf'tanūna

فِى

[in]

كُلِّ

every

kulli

عَامٍۢ

year

ʿāmin

مَّرَّةً

once

marratan

أَوْ

or

aw

مَرَّتَيْنِ

twice

marratayni

ثُمَّ

Yet

thumma

لَا

not

يَتُوبُونَ

they turn (in repentance)

yatūbūna

وَلَا

and not

walā

هُمْ

they

hum

يَذَّكَّرُونَ

pay heed

yadhakkarūna

١٢٦

Do they not see that they are tried every year once or twice but then they do not repent nor do they remember?

— Saheeh International

وَإِذَا

And whenever

wa-idhā

مَآ

And whenever

أُنزِلَتْ

is revealed

unzilat

سُورَةٌۭ

a Surah

sūratun

نَّظَرَ

look

naẓara

بَعْضُهُمْ

some of them

baʿḍuhum

إِلَىٰ

to

ilā

بَعْضٍ

others

baʿḍin

هَلْ

Does

hal

يَرَىٰكُم

see you

yarākum

مِّنْ

any

min

أَحَدٍۢ

one

aḥadin

ثُمَّ

Then

thumma

ٱنصَرَفُوا۟ ۚ

they turn away

inṣarafū

صَرَفَ

Allah has turned away

ṣarafa

ٱللَّهُ

Allah has turned away

l-lahu

قُلُوبَهُم

their hearts

qulūbahum

بِأَنَّهُمْ

because they

bi-annahum

قَوْمٌۭ

(are) a people

qawmun

لَّا

not

يَفْقَهُونَ

they understand

yafqahūna

١٢٧

And whenever a sūrah is revealed, they look at each other, [as if saying], "Does anyone see you?" and then they dismiss themselves. Allāh has dismissed their hearts because they are a people who do not understand.

— Saheeh International

لَقَدْ

Certainly

laqad

جَآءَكُمْ

(has) come to you

jāakum

رَسُولٌۭ

a Messenger

rasūlun

مِّنْ

from

min

أَنفُسِكُمْ

yourselves

anfusikum

عَزِيزٌ

Grievous

ʿazīzun

عَلَيْهِ

to him

ʿalayhi

مَا

(is) what

عَنِتُّمْ

you suffer

ʿanittum

حَرِيصٌ

(he is) concerned

ḥarīṣun

عَلَيْكُم

over you

ʿalaykum

بِٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ

to the believers

bil-mu'minīna

رَءُوفٌۭ

(he is) kind

raūfun

رَّحِيمٌۭ

(and) merciful

raḥīmun

١٢٨

There has certainly come to you a Messenger from among yourselves. Grievous to him is what you suffer; [he is] concerned over you [i.e., your guidance] and to the believers is kind and merciful.

— Saheeh International

فَإِن

But if

fa-in

تَوَلَّوْا۟

they turn away

tawallaw

فَقُلْ

then say

faqul

حَسْبِىَ

Sufficient for me

ḥasbiya

ٱللَّهُ

(is) Allah

l-lahu

لَآ

(There is) no

إِلَـٰهَ

god

ilāha

إِلَّا

except

illā

هُوَ ۖ

Him

huwa

عَلَيْهِ

On Him

ʿalayhi

تَوَكَّلْتُ ۖ

I put my trust

tawakkaltu

وَهُوَ

And He

wahuwa

رَبُّ

(is the) Lord

rabbu

ٱلْعَرْشِ

(of) the Throne

l-ʿarshi

ٱلْعَظِيمِ

the Great

l-ʿaẓīmi

١٢٩

But if they turn away, [O Muḥammad], say, "Sufficient for me is Allāh; there is no deity except Him. On Him I have relied, and He is the Lord of the Great Throne."

— Saheeh International
