مَا Not mā is kāna for a Prophet linabiyyin that an (there) should be yakūna for him lahu prisoners of war asrā until ḥattā he has battled strenuously yuth'khina in fī the land l-arḍi You desire turīdūna (the) commodities ʿaraḍa (of) the world l-dun'yā but Allah wal-lahu desires yurīdu (for you) the Hereafter l-ākhirata And Allah wal-lahu (is) All-Mighty ʿazīzun All-Wise ḥakīmun
It is not for a prophet to have captives [of war] until he inflicts a massacre [upon Allāh's enemies] in the land. You [i.e., some Muslims] desire the commodities of this world, but Allāh desires [for you] the Hereafter. And Allāh is Exalted in Might and Wise.
لَّوْلَا Had not lawlā an ordainment kitābun from mina Allah l-lahi preceded sabaqa surely (would) have touched you lamassakum for what fīmā you took akhadhtum a punishment ʿadhābun great ʿaẓīmun
If not for a decree from Allāh that preceded, you would have been touched for what you took by a great punishment.
فَكُلُوا۟ So eat fakulū from what mimmā you got as war booty ghanim'tum lawful ḥalālan (and) good ṭayyiban and fear wa-ittaqū Allah l-laha Indeed inna Allah l-laha (is) Oft-Forgiving ghafūrun Most Merciful raḥīmun
So consume what you have taken of war booty [as being] lawful and good, and fear Allāh. Indeed, Allāh is Forgiving and Merciful.
