Al-'Anfāl
The Spoils of War
﷽
الأنفال
يَسْـَٔلُونَكَ They ask you yasalūnaka about ʿani the spoils of war l-anfāli Say quli The spoils of war l-anfālu (are) for Allah lillahi and the Messenger wal-rasūli So fear fa-ittaqū Allah l-laha and set right wa-aṣliḥū that dhāta (which is) between you baynikum and obey wa-aṭīʿū Allah l-laha and His Messenger warasūlahu if in you are kuntum believers mu'minīna
They ask you, [O Muḥammad], about the bounties [of war]. Say, "The [decision concerning] bounties is for Allāh and the Messenger." So fear Allāh and amend that which is between you and obey Allāh and His Messenger, if you should be believers.
إِنَّمَا Only innamā the believers l-mu'minūna (are) those who alladhīna when idhā is mentioned dhukira Allah l-lahu feel fear wajilat their hearts qulūbuhum and when wa-idhā are recited tuliyat to them ʿalayhim His Verses āyātuhu they increase them zādathum (in) faith īmānan and upon waʿalā their Lord rabbihim they put their trust yatawakkalūna
The believers are only those who, when Allāh is mentioned, their hearts become fearful, and when His verses are recited to them, it increases them in faith; and upon their Lord they rely -
ٱلَّذِينَ Those who alladhīna establish yuqīmūna the prayer l-ṣalata and out of what wamimmā We have provided them razaqnāhum they spend yunfiqūna
The ones who establish prayer, and from what We have provided them, they spend.
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ Those ulāika they are humu the believers l-mu'minūna (in) truth ḥaqqan For them lahum (are) ranks darajātun with ʿinda their Lord rabbihim and forgiveness wamaghfiratun and a provision wariz'qun noble karīmun
Those are the believers, truly. For them are degrees [of high position] with their Lord and forgiveness and noble provision.
كَمَآ As kamā brought you out akhrajaka your Lord rabbuka from min your home baytika in truth bil-ḥaqi while indeed wa-inna a party farīqan among mina the believers l-mu'minīna certainly disliked lakārihūna
[It1 is] just as when your Lord brought you out of your home [for the battle of Badr] in truth, while indeed, a party among the believers were unwilling,
يُجَـٰدِلُونَكَ They dispute with you yujādilūnaka concerning fī the truth l-ḥaqi after what baʿdamā was made clear tabayyana as if ka-annamā they were driven yusāqūna to ilā [the] death l-mawti while they wahum (were) looking yanẓurūna
Arguing with you concerning the truth after it had become clear, as if they were being driven toward death while they were looking on.
وَإِذْ And when wa-idh promised you yaʿidukumu Allah l-lahu one iḥ'dā (of) the two groups l-ṭāifatayni that it (would be) annahā for you lakum and you wished watawaddūna that anna (one) other than ghayra that dhāti (of) the armed l-shawkati would be takūnu for you lakum But intended wayurīdu Allah l-lahu to an justify yuḥiqqa the truth l-ḥaqa by His words bikalimātihi and cut off wayaqṭaʿa (the) roots dābira (of) the disbelievers l-kāfirīna
[Remember, O believers], when Allāh promised you one of the two groups1 - that it would be yours - and you wished that the unarmed one would be yours. But Allāh intended to establish the truth by His words and to eliminate the disbelievers
لِيُحِقَّ That He might justify liyuḥiqqa the truth l-ḥaqa and prove false wayub'ṭila the falsehood l-bāṭila even if walaw disliked (it) kariha the criminals l-muj'rimūna
That He should establish the truth and abolish falsehood, even if the criminals disliked it.
إِذْ When idh you were seeking help tastaghīthūna (of) your Lord rabbakum and He answered fa-is'tajāba [to] you lakum Indeed, I am annī going to reinforce you mumiddukum with a thousand bi-alfin of mina the Angels l-malāikati one after another mur'difīna
[Remember] when you were asking help of your Lord, and He answered you, "Indeed, I will reinforce you with a thousand from the angels, following one another."
وَمَا And not wamā (it was) made jaʿalahu (by) Allah l-lahu but illā good tidings bush'rā and so that might be at rest walitaṭma-inna with it bihi your hearts qulūbukum And (there is) no wamā [the] victory l-naṣru except illā from min [of] ʿindi Allah l-lahi Indeed inna Allah l-laha (is) All-Mighty ʿazīzun All-Wise ḥakīmun
And Allāh made it not but good tidings and so that your hearts would be assured thereby. And victory is not but from Allāh. Indeed, Allāh is Exalted in Might and Wise.
إِذْ When idh He covered you yughashīkumu with [the] slumber l-nuʿāsa a security amanatan from Him min'hu and sent down wayunazzilu upon you ʿalaykum from mina the sky l-samāi water māan so that He may purify you liyuṭahhirakum with it bihi and take away wayudh'hiba from you ʿankum evil (suggestions) rij'za (of) the Shaitaan l-shayṭāni And to strengthen waliyarbiṭa [on] ʿalā your hearts qulūbikum and make firm wayuthabbita with it bihi your feet l-aqdāma
[Remember] when He overwhelmed you with drowsiness [giving] security from Him and sent down upon you from the sky, rain by which to purify you and remove from you the evil [suggestions] of Satan and to make steadfast your hearts and plant firmly thereby your feet.
إِذْ When idh inspired yūḥī your Lord rabbuka to ilā the Angels l-malāikati I am annī with you maʿakum so strengthen fathabbitū those who alladhīna believed āmanū I will cast sa-ul'qī in fī (the) hearts qulūbi (of) those who alladhīna disbelieved kafarū the terror l-ruʿ'ba so strike fa-iḍ'ribū above fawqa the necks l-aʿnāqi and strike wa-iḍ'ribū from them min'hum every kulla fingertip[s] banānin
[Remember] when your Lord inspired to the angels, "I am with you, so strengthen those who have believed. I will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieved, so strike [them] upon the necks and strike from them every fingertip."1
ذَٰلِكَ That dhālika (is) because they bi-annahum opposed shāqqū Allah l-laha and His Messenger warasūlahu And whoever waman opposes yushāqiqi Allah l-laha and His Messenger warasūlahu then indeed fa-inna Allah l-laha (is) severe shadīdu in [the] penalty l-ʿiqābi
That is because they opposed Allāh and His Messenger. And whoever opposes Allāh and His Messenger - indeed, Allāh is severe in penalty.
ذَٰلِكُمْ That dhālikum So taste it fadhūqūhu And that wa-anna for the disbelievers lil'kāfirīna (is the) punishment ʿadhāba (of) the Fire l-nāri
"That [is yours], so taste it." And indeed for the disbelievers is the punishment of the Fire.
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا O you yāayyuhā who alladhīna believe āmanū When idhā you meet laqītumu those who alladhīna disbelieve kafarū advancing zaḥfan then (do) not falā turn to them tuwallūhumu the backs l-adbāra
O you who have believed, when you meet those who disbelieve advancing [in battle], do not turn to them your backs [in flight].
وَمَن And whoever waman turns to them yuwallihim that day yawma-idhin his back duburahu except illā (as) a strategy mutaḥarrifan of war liqitālin or aw (to) join mutaḥayyizan to ilā a group fi-atin certainly faqad (he has) incurred bāa wrath bighaḍabin of mina Allah l-lahi and his abode wamawāhu (is) Hell jahannamu a wretched wabi'sa destination l-maṣīru
And whoever turns his back to them on such a day, unless swerving [as a strategy] for war or joining [another] company, has certainly returned with anger [upon him] from Allāh, and his refuge is Hell - and wretched is the destination.
فَلَمْ And not falam you kill them taqtulūhum but walākinna Allah l-laha killed them qatalahum And not wamā you threw ramayta when idh you threw ramayta but walākinna Allah l-laha threw ramā and that He may test waliyub'liya the believers l-mu'minīna from Him min'hu (with) a trial balāan good ḥasanan Indeed inna Allah l-laha (is) All-Hearing samīʿun All-Knowing ʿalīmun
And you did not kill them, but it was Allāh who killed them.1 And you threw not, [O Muḥammad], when you threw, but it was Allāh who threw2 that He might test the believers with a good test.3 Indeed, Allāh is Hearing and Knowing.
ذَٰلِكُمْ That (is the case) dhālikum and that wa-anna Allah (is) l-laha one who makes weak mūhinu (the) plan kaydi (of) the disbelievers l-kāfirīna
That [is so], and [also] that Allāh will weaken the plot of the disbelievers.
إِن If in you ask for victory tastaftiḥū then certainly faqad has come to you jāakumu the victory l-fatḥu And if wa-in you desist tantahū then it (is) fahuwa good khayrun for you lakum but if wa-in you return taʿūdū We will return (too) naʿud And never walan will avail tugh'niya you ʿankum your forces fi-atukum anything shayan even if walaw (they are) numerous kathurat And that wa-anna Allah l-laha (is) with maʿa the believers l-mu'minīna
If you [disbelievers] seek the decision [i.e., victory] - the decision [i.e., defeat] has come to you. And if you desist [from hostilities], it is best for you; but if you return [to war], We will return, and never will you be availed by your [large] company at all, even if it should increase; and [that is] because Allāh is with the believers.
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا O you yāayyuhā who alladhīna believe āmanū Obey aṭīʿū Allah l-laha and His Messenger warasūlahu And (do) not walā turn away tawallaw from him ʿanhu while you wa-antum hear tasmaʿūna
O you who have believed, obey Allāh and His Messenger and do not turn from him while you hear [his order].
وَلَا And (do) not walā be takūnū like those who ka-alladhīna say qālū We heard samiʿ'nā while they wahum (do) not lā hear yasmaʿūna
And do not be like those who say, "We have heard," while they do not hear.
۞ إِنَّ Indeed inna worst sharra (of) the living creatures l-dawābi near ʿinda Allah l-lahi (are) the deaf l-ṣumu the dumb l-buk'mu those who alladhīna (do) not lā use (their) intellect yaʿqilūna
Indeed, the worst of living creatures in the sight of Allāh are the deaf and dumb who do not use reason [i.e., the disbelievers].
وَلَوْ And if walaw (had) known ʿalima Allah l-lahu in them fīhim any good khayran surely, He (would) have made them hear la-asmaʿahum And if walaw He had made them hear asmaʿahum surely they would have turned away latawallaw while they wahum (were) averse muʿ'riḍūna
Had Allāh known any good in them, He would have made them hear. And if He had made them hear, they would [still] have turned away, while they were refusing.
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا O you yāayyuhā who alladhīna believe āmanū Respond is'tajībū to Allah lillahi and His Messenger walilrrasūli when idhā he calls you daʿākum to what limā gives you life yuḥ'yīkum And know wa-iʿ'lamū that anna Allah l-laha comes yaḥūlu (in) between bayna a man l-mari and his heart waqalbihi and that wa-annahu to Him ilayhi you will be gathered tuḥ'sharūna
O you who have believed, respond to Allāh and to the Messenger when he calls you to that which gives you life. And know that Allāh intervenes between a man and his heart and that to Him you will be gathered.
وَٱتَّقُوا۟ And fear wa-ittaqū a trial fit'natan not lā which will afflict tuṣībanna those who alladhīna do wrong ẓalamū among you minkum exclusively khāṣṣatan And know wa-iʿ'lamū that anna Allah l-laha (is) severe shadīdu (in) the penalty l-ʿiqābi
And fear a trial1 which will not strike those who have wronged among you exclusively, and know that Allāh is severe in penalty.
وَٱذْكُرُوٓا۟ And remember wa-udh'kurū when idh you antum (were) few qalīlun (and) deemed weak mus'taḍʿafūna in fī the earth l-arḍi fearing takhāfūna that an might do away with you yatakhaṭṭafakumu the men l-nāsu then He sheltered you faāwākum and strengthened you wa-ayyadakum with His help binaṣrihi and provided you warazaqakum of mina the good things l-ṭayibāti so that you may laʿallakum (be) thankful tashkurūna
And remember when you were few and oppressed in the land, fearing that people might abduct you, but He sheltered you, supported you with His victory, and provided you with good things - that you might be grateful.
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا O you yāayyuhā who alladhīna believe āmanū (Do) not lā betray takhūnū Allah l-laha and the Messenger wal-rasūla or betray watakhūnū your trusts amānātikum while you wa-antum know taʿlamūna
O you who have believed, do not betray Allāh and the Messenger or betray your trusts while you know [the consequence].
وَٱعْلَمُوٓا۟ And know wa-iʿ'lamū that annamā your wealth amwālukum and your children wa-awlādukum (are) a trial fit'natun And that wa-anna Allah l-laha with Him ʿindahu (is) a reward ajrun great ʿaẓīmun
And know that your properties and your children are but a trial and that Allāh has with Him a great reward.
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا O you yāayyuhā who alladhīna believe āmanū If in you fear tattaqū Allah l-laha He will grant yajʿal you lakum a criterion fur'qānan and will remove wayukaffir from you ʿankum your evil deeds sayyiātikum and forgive wayaghfir you lakum And Allah wal-lahu (is) the Possessor dhū (of) Bounty l-faḍli the Great l-ʿaẓīmi
O you who have believed, if you fear Allāh, He will grant you a criterion1 and will remove from you your misdeeds and forgive you. And Allāh is the possessor of great bounty.
وَإِذْ And when wa-idh plotted yamkuru against you bika those who alladhīna disbelieved kafarū that they restrain you liyuth'bitūka or aw kill you yaqtulūka or aw drive you out yukh'rijūka And they were planning wayamkurūna and (also) was planning wayamkuru Allah l-lahu And Allah wal-lahu is (the) Best khayru (of) the Planners l-mākirīna
And [remember, O Muḥammad], when those who disbelieved plotted against you to restrain you or kill you or evict you [from Makkah]. But they plan, and Allāh plans. And Allāh is the best of planners.
وَإِذَا And when wa-idhā are recited tut'lā to them ʿalayhim Our Verses āyātunā they say qālū Verily qad we have heard samiʿ'nā if law we wish nashāu surely, we could say laqul'nā like mith'la this hādhā Not in is this hādhā but illā tales asāṭīru (of) the former (people) l-awalīna
And when Our verses are recited to them, they say, "We have heard. If we willed, we could say [something] like this. This is not but legends of the former peoples."
وَإِذْ And when wa-idh they said qālū O Allah l-lahuma If in was kāna this hādhā [it] huwa the truth l-ḥaqa [of] min from You ʿindika then (send) rain fa-amṭir upon us ʿalaynā (of) stones ḥijāratan from mina the sky l-samāi or awi bring (upon) us i'tinā a punishment biʿadhābin painful alīmin
And [remember] when they said, "O Allāh, if this should be the truth from You, then rain down upon us stones from the sky or bring us a painful punishment."
وَمَا But not wamā is kāna (for) Allah l-lahu that He punishes them liyuʿadhibahum while you wa-anta (are) among them fīhim and not wamā is kāna Allah l-lahu the One Who punishes them muʿadhibahum while they wahum seek forgiveness yastaghfirūna
But Allāh would not punish them while you, [O Muḥammad], are among them, and Allāh would not punish them while they seek forgiveness.
وَمَا But what wamā (is) for them lahum that not allā (should) punish them yuʿadhibahumu Allah l-lahu while they wahum hinder (people) yaṣuddūna from ʿani Al-Masjid l-masjidi Al-Haraam l-ḥarāmi while not wamā they are kānū its guardians awliyāahu Not (can be) in its guardians awliyāuhu except illā the ones who fear Allah l-mutaqūna but walākinna most of them aktharahum (do) not lā know yaʿlamūna
But why should Allāh not punish them while they obstruct [people] from al-Masjid al-Ḥarām and they were not [fit to be] its guardians? Its [true] guardians are not but the righteous, but most of them do not know.
وَمَا And not wamā was kāna their prayer ṣalātuhum at ʿinda the House l-bayti except illā whistling mukāan and clapping wataṣdiyatan So taste fadhūqū the punishment l-ʿadhāba because bimā you used to kuntum disbelieve takfurūna
And their prayer at the House [i.e., the Kaʿbah] was not except whistling and handclapping. So taste the punishment for what you disbelieved [i.e., practiced of deviations].
إِنَّ Indeed inna those who alladhīna disbelieve kafarū they spend yunfiqūna their wealth amwālahum to hinder (people) liyaṣuddū from ʿan (the) way sabīli (of) Allah l-lahi So they will spend it fasayunfiqūnahā then thumma it will be takūnu for them ʿalayhim a regret ḥasratan then thumma they will be overcome yugh'labūna And those who wa-alladhīna disbelieve kafarū to ilā Hell jahannama they will be gathered yuḥ'sharūna
Indeed, those who disbelieve spend their wealth to avert [people] from the way of Allāh. So they will spend it; then it will be for them a [source of] regret; then they will be overcome. And those who have disbelieved - unto Hell they will be gathered.
لِيَمِيزَ That may distinguish liyamīza Allah l-lahu the wicked l-khabītha from mina the good l-ṭayibi and place wayajʿala the wicked l-khabītha some of them baʿḍahu on ʿalā others baʿḍin and heap them fayarkumahu all together jamīʿan and put them fayajʿalahu in fī Hell jahannama Those ulāika they humu (are) the losers l-khāsirūna
[It is] so that Allāh may distinguish the wicked from the good and place the wicked some of them upon others and heap them all together and put them into Hell. It is those who are the losers.
قُل Say qul to those who lilladhīna disbelieve kafarū if in they cease yantahū will be forgiven yugh'far for them lahum what mā [verily] qad (is) past salafa But if wa-in they return yaʿūdū then verily faqad preceded maḍat (the) practice sunnatu (of) the former (people) l-awalīna
Say to those who have disbelieved [that] if they cease, what has previously occurred will be forgiven for them. But if they return [to hostility] - then the precedent of the former [rebellious] peoples has already taken place.1
وَقَـٰتِلُوهُمْ And fight them waqātilūhum until ḥattā not lā there is takūna oppression fit'natun and is wayakūna the religion l-dīnu all of it kulluhu for Allah lillahi But if fa-ini they cease intahaw then indeed fa-inna Allah l-laha of what bimā they do yaʿmalūna (is) All-Seer baṣīrun
And fight against them until there is no fitnah1 and [until] the religion [i.e., worship], all of it, is for Allāh.2 And if they cease - then indeed, Allāh is Seeing of what they do.
وَإِن And if wa-in they turn away tawallaw then know fa-iʿ'lamū that anna Allah l-laha (is) your Protector mawlākum Excellent niʿ'ma (is) the Protector l-mawlā and Excellent waniʿ'ma (is) the Helper l-naṣīru
But if they turn away - then know that Allāh is your protector. Excellent is the protector, and excellent is the helper.
۞ وَٱعْلَمُوٓا۟ And know wa-iʿ'lamū that what annamā you obtain (as) spoils of war ghanim'tum of min anything shayin then that fa-anna for Allah lillahi (is) one fifth of it khumusahu and for the Messenger walilrrasūli and for the walidhī near relatives l-qur'bā and the orphans wal-yatāmā and the needy wal-masākīni and the wa-ib'ni wayfarer l-sabīli if in you kuntum believe āmantum in Allah bil-lahi and (in) what wamā We sent down anzalnā to ʿalā Our slave ʿabdinā (on the) day yawma (of) the criterion l-fur'qāni (the) day yawma (when) met l-taqā the two forces l-jamʿāni And Allah wal-lahu (is) on ʿalā every kulli thing shayin All-Powerful qadīrun
And know that anything you obtain of war booty - then indeed, for Allāh is one fifth of it and for the Messenger1 and for [his] near relatives2 and the orphans, the needy, and the [stranded] traveler,3 if you have believed in Allāh and in that which We sent down to Our Servant4 on the day of criterion [i.e., decisive encounter] - the day when the two armies met [at Badr]. And Allāh, over all things, is competent.
إِذْ When idh you (were) antum on side of the valley bil-ʿud'wati the nearer l-dun'yā and they wahum (were) on the side bil-ʿud'wati the farther l-quṣ'wā and the caravan wal-rakbu (was) lower asfala than you minkum And if walaw you (had) made an appointment tawāʿadttum certainly you would have failed la-ikh'talaftum in fī the appointment l-mīʿādi But walākin that might accomplish liyaqḍiya Allah l-lahu a matter amran (that) was kāna destined mafʿūlan that (might be) destroyed liyahlika (those) who man (were to be) destroyed halaka on ʿan a clear evidence bayyinatin and (might) live wayaḥyā (those) who man (were to) live ḥayya on ʿan a clear evidence bayyinatin And indeed wa-inna Allah l-laha (is) All-Hearing lasamīʿun All-Knowing ʿalīmun
[Remember] when you were on the near side of the valley, and they were on the farther side, and the caravan was lower [in position] than you. If you had made an appointment [to meet], you would have missed the appointment. But [it was] so that Allāh might accomplish a matter already destined - that those who perished [through disbelief] would perish upon evidence and those who lived [in faith] would live upon evidence; and indeed, Allāh is Hearing and Knowing.
إِذْ When idh you (where) shown them yurīkahumu (by) Allah l-lahu in fī your dream manāmika (as) few qalīlan and if walaw He had shown them to you arākahum (as) many kathīran surely you would have lost courage lafashil'tum and surely you would have disputed walatanāzaʿtum in fī the matter l-amri but walākinna Allah l-laha saved (you) sallama Indeed, He innahu (is) All-Knower ʿalīmun of what is in bidhāti the breasts l-ṣudūri
[Remember, O Muḥammad], when Allāh showed them to you in your dream as few; and if He had shown them to you as many, you [believers] would have lost courage and would have disputed in the matter [of whether to fight], but Allāh saved [you from that]. Indeed, He is Knowing of that within the breasts.
وَإِذْ And when wa-idh He showed them to you yurīkumūhum when idhi you met l-taqaytum in fī your eyes aʿyunikum (as) few qalīlan and He made you (appear) as few wayuqallilukum in fī their eyes aʿyunihim that might accomplish liyaqḍiya Allah might accomplish l-lahu a matter amran (that) was kāna (already) destined mafʿūlan And to wa-ilā Allah l-lahi return tur'jaʿu (all) the matters l-umūru
And [remember] when He showed them to you, when you met, as few in your eyes, and He made you [appear] as few in their eyes so that Allāh might accomplish a matter already destined. And to Allāh are [all] matters returned.
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا O you yāayyuhā who alladhīna believe āmanū When idhā you meet laqītum a force fi-atan then be firm fa-uth'butū and remember wa-udh'kurū Allah l-laha much kathīran so that you may laʿallakum (be) successful tuf'liḥūna
O you who have believed, when you encounter a company [from the enemy forces], stand firm and remember Allāh much that you may be successful.
وَأَطِيعُوا۟ And obey wa-aṭīʿū Allah l-laha and His Messenger warasūlahu and (do) not walā dispute tanāzaʿū lest you lose courage fatafshalū and (would) depart watadhhaba your strength rīḥukum and be patient wa-iṣ'birū Indeed inna Allah l-laha (is) with maʿa the patient ones l-ṣābirīna
And obey Allāh and His Messenger, and do not dispute and [thus] lose courage and [then] your strength would depart; and be patient. Indeed, Allāh is with the patient.
وَلَا And (do) not walā be takūnū like those who ka-alladhīna came forth kharajū from min their homes diyārihim boastfully baṭaran and showing off wariāa (to) the people l-nāsi and hinder (them) wayaṣuddūna from ʿan (the) way sabīli (of) Allah l-lahi And Allah wal-lahu of what bimā they do yaʿmalūna (is) All-Encompassing muḥīṭun
And do not be like those who came forth from their homes insolently and to be seen by people and avert [them] from the way of Allāh. And Allāh is encompassing1 of what they do.
وَإِذْ And when wa-idh made fair-seeming zayyana to them lahumu the Shaitaan l-shayṭānu their deeds aʿmālahum and he said waqāla No (one) lā (can) overcome ghāliba [to] you lakumu today l-yawma from mina the people l-nāsi and indeed, I am wa-innī a neighbor jārun for you lakum But when falammā came in sight tarāati the two forces l-fi-atāni he turned away nakaṣa on ʿalā his heels ʿaqibayhi and said waqāla Indeed, I am innī free barīon of you minkum Indeed, I innī see arā what mā not lā you see tarawna indeed, I innī [I] fear akhāfu Allah l-laha And Allah wal-lahu (is) severe shadīdu (in) the penalty l-ʿiqābi
And [remember] when Satan made their deeds pleasing to them and said, "No one can overcome you today from among the people, and indeed, I am your protector." But when the two armies sighted each other, he turned on his heels and said, "Indeed, I am disassociated from you. Indeed, I see what you do not see; indeed, I fear Allāh. And Allāh is severe in penalty."
إِذْ When idh said yaqūlu the hypocrites l-munāfiqūna and those who wa-alladhīna in fī their hearts qulūbihim (was) a disease maraḍun (Had) deluded gharra these (people) hāulāi their religion dīnuhum But whoever waman puts (his) trust yatawakkal in ʿalā Allah l-lahi then indeed fa-inna Allah l-laha (is) All-Mighty ʿazīzun All-Wise ḥakīmun
[Remember] when the hypocrites and those in whose hearts was disease [i.e., arrogance and disbelief] said, "Their religion has deluded those [Muslims]." But whoever relies upon Allāh - then indeed, Allāh is Exalted in Might and Wise.
وَلَوْ And if walaw you (could) see tarā when idh take away souls yatawaffā (of) those who alladhīna disbelieve kafarū the Angels l-malāikatu striking yaḍribūna their faces wujūhahum and their backs wa-adbārahum Taste wadhūqū (the) punishment ʿadhāba (of) the Blazing Fire l-ḥarīqi
And if you could but see when the angels take the souls of those who disbelieved...1 They are striking their faces and their backs and [saying], "Taste the punishment of the Burning Fire.
ذَٰلِكَ That dhālika (is) for what bimā sent forth qaddamat your hands aydīkum And indeed wa-anna Allah l-laha (is) not laysa unjust biẓallāmin to His slaves lil'ʿabīdi
That is for what your hands have put forth [of evil] and because Allāh is not ever unjust to [His] servants."
كَدَأْبِ Like (the) way kadabi (of) people āli (of) Firaun fir'ʿawna and those who wa-alladhīna (were) from min before them qablihim They disbelieved kafarū in (the) Signs biāyāti (of) Allah l-lahi so seized them fa-akhadhahumu Allah l-lahu for their sins bidhunūbihim Indeed inna Allah l-laha (is) All-Strong qawiyyun (and) severe shadīdu (in) the penalty l-ʿiqābi
[Theirs is] like the custom of the people of Pharaoh and of those before them. They disbelieved in the signs of Allāh, so Allāh seized them for their sins. Indeed, Allāh is Powerful and severe in penalty.
ذَٰلِكَ That dhālika (is) because bi-anna Allah l-laha not lam is yaku One Who changes mughayyiran a favor niʿ'matan which He had bestowed anʿamahā on ʿalā a people qawmin until ḥattā they change yughayyirū what mā (is) in themselves bi-anfusihim And indeed wa-anna Allah l-laha (is) All-Hearing samīʿun All-Knowing ʿalīmun
That is because Allāh would not change a favor which He had bestowed upon a people until they change what is within themselves. And indeed, Allāh is Hearing and Knowing.
كَدَأْبِ Like (the) way kadabi (of) people āli (of) Firaun fir'ʿawna and those who wa-alladhīna (were) from min before them qablihim They denied kadhabū (the) Signs biāyāti (of) their Lord rabbihim so We destroyed them fa-ahlaknāhum for their sins bidhunūbihim and We drowned wa-aghraqnā (the) people āla (of) Firaun fir'ʿawna and (they) all wakullun were kānū wrongdoers ẓālimīna
[Theirs is] like the custom of the people of Pharaoh and of those before them. They denied the signs of their Lord, so We destroyed them for their sins, and We drowned the people of Pharaoh. And all [of them] were wrongdoers.
إِنَّ Indeed inna (the) worst sharra (of) the living creatures l-dawābi near ʿinda Allah l-lahi (are) those who alladhīna disbelieve kafarū and they fahum (will) not lā believe yu'minūna
Indeed, the worst of living creatures in the sight of Allāh are those who have disbelieved, and they will not [ever] believe-
ٱلَّذِينَ Those who alladhīna you made a covenant ʿāhadtta with them min'hum then thumma they break yanquḍūna their covenant ʿahdahum [in] fī every kulli time marratin and they wahum (do) not lā fear (Allah) yattaqūna
The ones with whom you made a treaty but then they break their pledge every time, and they do not fear Allāh.
فَإِمَّا So if fa-immā you gain dominance over them tathqafannahum in fī the war l-ḥarbi disperse fasharrid by them bihim (those) who man (are) behind them khalfahum so that they may laʿallahum take heed yadhakkarūna
So if you, [O Muḥammad], gain dominance over them in war, disperse by [means of] them those behind them that perhaps they will be reminded.1
وَإِمَّا And if wa-immā you fear takhāfanna from min a people qawmin betrayal khiyānatan throw back fa-inbidh to them ilayhim on ʿalā equal (terms) sawāin Indeed inna Allah l-laha (does) not lā love yuḥibbu the traitors l-khāinīna
If you [have reason to] fear from a people betrayal, throw [their treaty] back to them, [putting you] on equal terms.1 Indeed, Allāh does not like traitors.
وَلَا And (let) not walā think yaḥsabanna those who alladhīna disbelieve kafarū they can outstrip sabaqū Indeed, they innahum (can) not lā escape yuʿ'jizūna
And let not those who disbelieve think they will escape. Indeed, they will not cause failure [to Allāh].
وَأَعِدُّوا۟ And prepare wa-aʿiddū for them lahum whatever mā you able (to) is'taṭaʿtum of min force quwwatin and of wamin tethered ribāṭi horses l-khayli (to) terrify tur'hibūna therewith bihi (the) enemy ʿaduwwa (of) Allah l-lahi and your enemy waʿaduwwakum and others waākharīna from min besides them dūnihim not lā (do) you know them taʿlamūnahumu (but) Allah l-lahu knows them yaʿlamuhum And whatever wamā you spend tunfiqū from min (any) thing shayin in fī (the) way sabīli (of) Allah l-lahi it will be fully repaid yuwaffa to you ilaykum and you wa-antum (will) not lā be wronged tuẓ'lamūna
And prepare against them whatever you are able of power and of steeds of war1 by which you may terrify the enemy of Allāh and your enemy and others besides them whom you do not know [but] whom Allāh knows. And whatever you spend in the cause of Allāh will be fully repaid to you, and you will not be wronged.
۞ وَإِن And if wa-in they incline janaḥū to peace lilssalmi then you (also) incline fa-ij'naḥ to it lahā and put (your) trust watawakkal in ʿalā Allah l-lahi Indeed innahu He huwa (is) All-Hearer l-samīʿu All-Knower l-ʿalīmu
And if they incline to peace, then incline to it [also] and rely upon Allāh. Indeed, it is He who is the Hearing, the Knowing.
وَإِن But if wa-in they intend yurīdū to an deceive you yakhdaʿūka then indeed fa-inna is sufficient for you ḥasbaka Allah l-lahu He huwa (is) the One Who alladhī supported you ayyadaka with His help binaṣrihi and with the believers wabil-mu'minīna
But if they intend to deceive you - then sufficient for you is Allāh. It is He who supported you with His help and with the believers
وَأَلَّفَ And He (has) put affection wa-allafa between bayna their hearts qulūbihim If law you (had) spent anfaqta whatever mā (is) in fī the earth l-arḍi all jamīʿan not mā (could) you (have) put affection allafta between bayna their hearts qulūbihim but walākinna Allah l-laha (has) put affection allafa between them baynahum Indeed, He innahu (is) All-Mighty ʿazīzun All-Wise ḥakīmun
And brought together their hearts. If you had spent all that is in the earth, you could not have brought their hearts together; but Allāh brought them together. Indeed, He is Exalted in Might and Wise.
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا O yāayyuhā Prophet l-nabiyu Sufficient for you ḥasbuka (is) Allah l-lahu and whoever wamani follows you ittabaʿaka of mina the believers l-mu'minīna
O Prophet, sufficient for you is Allāh and for whoever follows you of the believers.
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا O yāayyuhā Prophet l-nabiyu Urge ḥarriḍi the believers l-mu'minīna to ʿalā [the] fight l-qitāli If in (there) are yakun among you minkum twenty ʿish'rūna steadfast ṣābirūna they will overcome yaghlibū two hundred mi-atayni And if wa-in (there) are yakun among you minkum a hundred mi-atun they will overcome yaghlibū a thousand alfan of mina those who alladhīna disbelieve kafarū because they bi-annahum (are) a people qawmun (who do) not lā understand yafqahūna
O Prophet, urge the believers to battle. If there are among you twenty [who are] steadfast, they will overcome two hundred. And if there are among you one hundred [who are steadfast], they will overcome a thousand of those who have disbelieved because they are a people who do not understand.
ٱلْـَٔـٰنَ Now al-āna has (been) lightened khaffafa (by) Allah l-lahu for you ʿankum and He knows waʿalima that anna in you fīkum (there) is weakness ḍaʿfan So if fa-in (there) are yakun among you minkum a hundred mi-atun steadfast ṣābiratun they will overcome yaghlibū two hundred mi-atayni And if wa-in (there) are yakun among you minkum a thousand alfun they will overcome yaghlibū two thousand alfayni with (the) permission bi-idh'ni (of) Allah l-lahi And Allah wal-lahu (is) with maʿa the steadfast l-ṣābirīna
Now, Allāh has lightened [the hardship] for you, and He knows that among you is weakness. So if there are from you one hundred [who are] steadfast, they will overcome two hundred. And if there are among you a thousand, they will overcome two thousand by permission of Allāh. And Allāh is with the steadfast.
مَا Not mā is kāna for a Prophet linabiyyin that an (there) should be yakūna for him lahu prisoners of war asrā until ḥattā he has battled strenuously yuth'khina in fī the land l-arḍi You desire turīdūna (the) commodities ʿaraḍa (of) the world l-dun'yā but Allah wal-lahu desires yurīdu (for you) the Hereafter l-ākhirata And Allah wal-lahu (is) All-Mighty ʿazīzun All-Wise ḥakīmun
It is not for a prophet to have captives [of war] until he inflicts a massacre [upon Allāh's enemies] in the land. You [i.e., some Muslims] desire the commodities of this world,1 but Allāh desires [for you] the Hereafter. And Allāh is Exalted in Might and Wise.
لَّوْلَا Had not lawlā an ordainment kitābun from mina Allah l-lahi preceded sabaqa surely (would) have touched you lamassakum for what fīmā you took akhadhtum a punishment ʿadhābun great ʿaẓīmun
If not for a decree from Allāh that preceded,1 you would have been touched for what you took by a great punishment.
فَكُلُوا۟ So eat fakulū from what mimmā you got as war booty ghanim'tum lawful ḥalālan (and) good ṭayyiban and fear wa-ittaqū Allah l-laha Indeed inna Allah l-laha (is) Oft-Forgiving ghafūrun Most Merciful raḥīmun
So consume what you have taken of war booty [as being] lawful and good, and fear Allāh. Indeed, Allāh is Forgiving and Merciful.
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا O yāayyuhā Prophet l-nabiyu Say qul to whoever liman (is) in fī your hands aydīkum of mina the captives l-asrā If in knows yaʿlami Allah l-lahu in fī your hearts qulūbikum any good khayran He will give you yu'tikum better khayran than what mimmā was taken ukhidha from you minkum and He will forgive wayaghfir you lakum And Allah wal-lahu (is) Oft-Forgiving ghafūrun Most Merciful raḥīmun
O Prophet, say to whoever is in your hands of the captives, "If Allāh knows [any] good in your hearts, He will give you [something] better than what was taken from you, and He will forgive you; and Allāh is Forgiving and Merciful."
وَإِن But if wa-in they intend yurīdū (to) betray you khiyānataka certainly faqad they have betrayed khānū Allah l-laha from min before qablu So He gave (you) power fa-amkana over them min'hum And Allah wal-lahu (is) All-Knower ʿalīmun All-Wise ḥakīmun
But if they intend to betray you - then they have already betrayed Allāh before, and He empowered [you] over them. And Allāh is Knowing and Wise.
إِنَّ Indeed inna those who alladhīna believed āmanū and emigrated wahājarū and strove hard wajāhadū with their wealth bi-amwālihim and their lives wa-anfusihim in fī (the) way sabīli (of) Allah l-lahi and those who wa-alladhīna gave shelter āwaw and helped wanaṣarū those ulāika some of them baʿḍuhum (are) allies awliyāu (of) another baʿḍin But those who wa-alladhīna believed āmanū and (did) not walam emigrate yuhājirū (it is) not mā for you lakum (of) min their protection walāyatihim (in) min (in) anything shayin until ḥattā they emigrate yuhājirū And if wa-ini they seek your help is'tanṣarūkum in fī the religion l-dīni then upon you faʿalaykumu (is to) help them l-naṣru except illā against ʿalā a people qawmin between you baynakum and between them wabaynahum (is) a treaty mīthāqun And Allah wal-lahu of what bimā you do taʿmalūna (is) All-Seer baṣīrun
Indeed, those who have believed and emigrated and fought with their wealth and lives in the cause of Allāh and those who gave shelter and aided - they are allies of one another. But those who believed and did not emigrate - for you there is no support of them until they emigrate. And if they seek help of you for the religion, then you must help, except against a people between yourselves and whom is a treaty. And Allāh is Seeing of what you do.
وَٱلَّذِينَ And those who wa-alladhīna disbelieve kafarū some of them baʿḍuhum (are) allies awliyāu (to) another baʿḍin If not illā you do it tafʿalūhu (there) will be takun oppression fit'natun in fī the earth l-arḍi and corruption wafasādun great kabīrun
And those who disbelieved are allies of one another. If you do not do so [i.e., ally yourselves with other believers], there will be fitnah [i.e., disbelief and oppression] on earth and great corruption.
وَٱلَّذِينَ And those who wa-alladhīna believed āmanū and emigrated wahājarū and strove hard wajāhadū in fī (the) way sabīli (of) Allah l-lahi and those who wa-alladhīna gave shelter āwaw and helped wanaṣarū those ulāika they (are) humu the believers l-mu'minūna (in) truth ḥaqqan For them lahum (is) forgiveness maghfiratun and a provision wariz'qun noble karīmun
But those who have believed and emigrated and fought in the cause of Allāh and those who gave shelter and aided - it is they who are the believers, truly. For them is forgiveness and noble provision.
وَٱلَّذِينَ And those who wa-alladhīna believed āmanū from min afterwards baʿdu and emigrated wahājarū and strove hard wajāhadū with you maʿakum then those fa-ulāika (are) of you minkum But those wa-ulū (of) blood relationship l-arḥāmi some of them baʿḍuhum (are) nearer awlā to another bibaʿḍin in fī (the) Book kitābi (of) Allah l-lahi Indeed inna Allah l-laha of every bikulli thing shayin (is) All-Knower ʿalīmun
And those who believed after [the initial emigration] and emigrated and fought with you - they are of you. But those of [blood] relationship are more entitled [to inheritance] in the decree of Allāh.1 Indeed, Allāh is Knowing of all things.
